2024 Dove Hunt- Day 3| 6 days in the Desert
This is the last of 3 videos of this year's September dove opener trip to Imperial Valley in the Southern California desert. I spent 6 days camping in my Toyota Tundra that I bought earlier in the year. This was the maiden voyage and it went very well. The air conditioner I installed in the bed of the truck worked so well, I had to turn the temp up because I was so cold.
Anyway, more great dove action in this one and all in all, this was one of the best trips I can remember in a very long time. I hope you enjoy it and thank you for watching.

Welcome back all, This year's trip was absolutely amazing and was overwhelmingly welcomed by all in my group and for countless other hunters that shared the same area around us. This trip however, went a little sour on day-1 when I developed camera issues and was unable to continue filming unless I wanted to stop hunting. Truck Shell Air Conditioner? Heck Yeah!

You definitely had some good shooting first week of the opener. We made it out for the second week and there were almost no birds flying the four days we were there. We tried the DFG fields on 2nd and 6th, and we tried all of our old spots down on the south side of the 10, all the way past Ripley and the river. There's always second opener and next year! Glad you were able to get on some birds!
@@naomiaguilar1939 That field I was next to was so packed with birds (day 1 video shows it well) that by day 3 there were still plenty to be had. I always see a ton of birds in the Ripley area. Weird you weren’t seeing numbers at any of your honey holes. November can definitely be a good shoot but they’re certainly not as widespread as they are in September. I hope you get on them for second opener. Appreciate your input!

@@MikeIvey-i2k Wow, even if you leave a wing?
@@desertqwest the upland game birds in Oregon have to be dressed whole with a wing or head attached while in the field or in transport.

Twist the wings off first. Even easier to pull off the breast.
I find it to just be an extra step. I did this very slowly to demonstrate the technique. But if that works well for you, that’s great. Thanks for your twist on this. 👍🏻
Great video. We've been out to blythe every year since 2008 and I haven't seen birds flying in numbers or dense flurries since about 2010 or so. We're heading out there tonight for the second week of the opener, so hopefully the numbers are still sticking around! Nice shooting and glad you had a great time!
@@naomiaguilar1939 Thank you. The next video which I will drop soon should be a better watch. I got lucky and that field happened to be close to where I was camping. Good luck to you in Blythe. That area always looks good 👍🏻
Well that was fast! Thanks!
@@Thats_That_Dude It really is that easy! Glad you found it helpful.
Looks like it was an epic opener regardless of what the camera was doing. It happens, my last one the camera “overheated” and shut off mid hunt. I could have fiddled around with it but the hunting was more important!
@@PatternChief That was exactly my thoughts too. Didn’t want to ruin an amazing hunt fiddling with the camera
I was out there with a buddy on the opener too but we spent the morning “scouting” some spots I had looked at online. We found some interesting areas and saw some that looked just like your spot too! Then we went to our usual spot to bag a few birds in the early afternoon before it was just too damn hot for us to stay out there. Absolutely scorcher that weekend! 🥵 Happy hunting and good luck this season!
@@noammobro Thank you. Did you happen to notice the AC on the back of my truck? Haha. GAME CHANGER! I believe that was a cut sorghum field and boy do they love those seeds. Mental note taken. Thanks for watching and good luck to you this year, as well. 🤙🏻

I’ve also been coming to the same place for 50 years or more starting with my father. I agree that you shouldn’t assume but this area is pretty good about posting when they don’t want you hunting. Thanks again for the input. Hope you had a great opener’s like we did.

Cool video. Here’s some dove hunting facts I’ve amassed based on experience over the last 44 years of hunting dove during both early and late season openers. I’ve only missed one season. -Mourning dove prefer to eat off the ground in cut fields. -White wing dove prefer to eat off the trees and perch. -Having moving decoys in cut fields helps tremendously, because dove think it’s feeding time. Late season dove facts: -Late season, the dove prefer open fields more than orchards and trees from early season. -Dove are fatter in size and more mature. This can lead to misjudging distances. Also the dove tend to fly higher with late season. -Hunters may need to increase choke size construction by 1 for longer distant shooting. -Unlike September dove, inclement weather during late season tends to push them out of the area even more. -Late season dove move more during the early Morning hours. Decoys are most effective during early Morning hours. -If late season dove are ignoring your decoys, it’s time to walk open fields and jump shoot them. Jump shooting out of the fields greatly increases if you have 2-3 hunters driving them out. -Late season dove hunting requires more scouting. Once a spot is found, you need to be seated in the field before sunrise.
I agree 100% to everything you said. I was in a bad situation with a car and nowhere to go. This year will be different and I will have plenty of time to scout a bit more. Thanks for the great information and for watching.
Hey do you just park anywhere you like or do you need permission from the farmers?
@@chriscontreras5218 As long as it’s not posted, you should be fine. Just be considerate and leave it clean so they don’t post it next time. 😉 Some areas may need permission to use, though. There’s a lot of farmland there so just look for something that suits your needs and style. Thanks for watching. More to come…soon

@@philipmendisco6656 That’s always a good rule to abide by. Most of the areas here are okay to hunt if not posted, but it’s nice to speak to the owner if you can. If they don’t want people to hunt they will post it, otherwise they may just ask you to make sure you clean up after yourself

Where did you get the seeds for the desert willow?
I got some from around Lake Havasu, AZ and I got others from a tree in my neighborhood. They also grow around the eastern part of San Diego county in the backcountry. Are you going to start some for yourself?
I have lots of seeds from an existing tree. I will try the paper towel method. I’m in the AZ desert.
You're in the perfect place!! I love the AZ desert, in fact, most all of my trees are from seeds harvested in Havasu , with the exception of some of my desert willow. Do you know what kind of Palo Verde you get when you grow a seed from a Desert Museum? Curious, since the DM is a hybrid between a few of the other varieties. Anyway, have fun and keep me posted. :)
@@desertqwest Sorry, I do not know. The trees that I have were planted by the birds. Ground squirrels will eat everything I plant except Palo Verde, Mesquite and Palm trees.
