Awesome find Sean. They still had the harness racing (and betting) on Monday till the early 90s. When the horses ran by they'd drop the rope and let people across the track in or out of the fair until they came around again. Wouldn't fly by todays insurance salesman.
Place still smells like a sewer
“Back when Toronto was _____” [fill in the blank]
Ive seen this footage at doc fest 10 yrs ago. Some body found some super8 films in the garbage and put them on disc.
yes i think it was a popular thing to photograph and film ..
@@seanscally2099 I wish I remeber who it was made that film. It had long shots of the derailment in colour.
Of all the home movies we grew up watching "The Train Wreck" was my brother and mines favorite. We had around 5 minutes of colour 8mm film shot from the road just north of the tracks. Still have it saved on CD somewhere.
Businesses have a habit of burning to the ground in Trenton.
I sure miss those days and times gone by.
Great video. Thank you for all of the background info. I spent many summers in Muskoka but did not know all of the history. DItchburn boats were always the cream of the crop of the wooden boats in the area. My grandparents had two small Greavettes back in the day. The boat Phoebe shown at 5:52 was still on the Muskoka Lakes as of a few years ago. One small point - Dukes Boat Works shown at 6:29 is in Port Carling at the locks (also in Muskoka) not Gravenhurst, I am not sure if they were related to Ditchburn somehow, I always knew them as competitors.
1979 ... Graduation from T.H.S. for me !!! 5 years later , I'm outa there!
My grandfather, Gordon Cook was raised on the wharf and sailed the Bay. My mother lent me an old book, I can't remember the name of it now but I read it and was amazed to find him mentioned in it. They built their own boats, sometimes stealing wood to do so. He ended up buying a boat, again I don't remember the name, but it went on to win some races. I will have to ask her to let me read it again. He was a hero to me growing up, for his part in the D-day invasion as a dispatch rider. To learn of his exploits sailing the Bay of Quinte before the war explained his interest when I, as a young boy, began learning to sail.
I worked for his younger brother "Babe" at Produce Processors briefly in 1982 before I went to university...not an ideal career, but excellent life experience!
I remember Eben II very well. Nice man.
My guess is that this clip was taken at 2 AFS in Portage La Prairie sometime between 1954 and 1956. The letter code "PP" was assigned to 2 AFS. According to the CWH CASPIR site, T-33 21285 came on strength with the RCAF Air Training Command in 1954, but went into storage in 1956. According to the technical record published on the CASPIR site, the aircraft was taken out of storage in 1958, refurbished and then moved on to 4 Wing at Baden-Soellingen in Germany, and then transferred to the Turkish Air Force where it crashed. Back in another life, I was an acquaintance of a former CO of 10 FTTU in Cold Lake who had been the amongst the first of the IE (instrument electrical) technicians to be assigned to the T-33. He said that the learning curve for the aircraft systems was, for the time, vertical! Thanks for publishing and for the challenge of giving this clip a probable location and era.
this brought a tear to my eye! good ol' Buff
My dad was the trainer for the Argos in the1950's. We went to alot of football games all the parades every time they were in Toronto. This videio brings back good memorys
Not a single overweight person in the video. A 2024 version in downtown Trenton would tell a different story...
The good ol days. I remember those views well.
Amazing footage!
As well, visit the air force museum on the same lands as the base.
i just caught a tiny glimpse of our pool hall near the end...

I used to play with the pieces of TNT in the early 80s as a kid behind Bunker Hill/ Pyrotenax. Love the book also,
Think of all the business establishments that didn’t burn down yet.
Wow how much things have changed over time. I had to watch this to see if I was in any of it. Lol
Lol, me too!
That brings back alot of memories.
Nice Find!!
I remeber the water shows at the Ex. I was 11 yrs old in 65. The shows carried on into the 70s
Ah.... the good old days before Canada became a colony of India.
Remember the two guys playing acoustic guitars Neil young songs in that lower entrance to a store? North of college east side
so cool to see Le Coq d'Or
Wow...lots of memories of Younge Street. I lived near there going to college from 71-74 and loved walking up and down both sides of the street hundreds of times for something to do. I loved going into the Brown Derby and Friars Tavern when I had a few bucks to spend. Sam the Record Man was a great place to spend hours just looking trough the thousands of LP's.
priceless footage - thanks for posting.

I have a property quite close to Point Petre, we were out on the ATV one day an my husband proclaimed "wow , that is the biggest raccoon I've ever seen" we carried on and returned 30-45 minutes later. I got off the ATV and saw something staring at me in an opening of the woods on our property. To this day, I have never seen anything like it and still not sure what was staring at me. It looked like it had the head of a raccoon (same ears and mask marking) but tall and leggy like a coyote. We studied each other for a couple minutes and it slowly sauntered off into the woods, never to be seen or heard from again. The closest thing I have found on the internet is a Raccoon Dog out of Asia, but this was taller. I will never know what I actually saw that day. There is a weird energy in the area, and often low droning frequencies can be heard in the quiet.
oh thats kinda creepy ... Tanukis in Canada Statistics: According to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, there have been several reported cases of tanuki sightings in the wild, raising concerns about their potential impact on local fauna.
@@seanscally2099 have you read "Gateway to Oblivion The Great Lakes' Bermuda Triangle" by Hugh Cochrane.... fascinating collection of stories
I'll check it out ..thanks
A really great video.
What a great base. My dad was a C-47, C-119, 707, and mostly a Herc pilot. I sure miss flying on the Hercs, nothing else like them, lots of good memories. Thanks for the effort put into this film.
Wonderful voice, enjoyed your song. 😊 keep on writing and hope to see a CD soon.😊
I was often in the store in the early 60's, having walked over from the Gilbert, to check out the comic books.
Shes the best

Hi is this actual footage of the train going over the consecon area? 43:00
it is not unfortunately ... I have never found any actual footage of the COR but many photographs .. hope you enjoyed it.
@@seanscally2099 loved it. I grew up on smokes point road and as a kid i was obsessed about railways and even more curious about out the railroad up the street that I later learned was the COR. Do you have any photos you can share with me? The wellers bay round house etc?!
Berliner invented,...ready? The microphone, the Gramophone, the flat disc record, the process of pressing, mastering and mothering the disc record, improving Bell's telephone and sound recording in general and much more. I used to work for his grandson, Oliver, a very smart guy in his own right.
Remember as a kid staying over night in the transit accommodation when we came from Germany on a Yukon. Think it was when dad was posted back to Canada. It was still cold so the heat was on in the building. After being in Europe for years the dry furnace heat felt stifling.
The Yukon Lodge!! It was full when we came back from Lahr in July ‘69 so they put us up at the Dutch Mill Inn. Dad wasn’t happy that the music was so loud late into the night. lol. Little did I know, I would happily visit the Dutch a couple of times a week, for years. The base was always magical for me growing up; dad was a RO in 436, 437 Squadrons in the early 70s, flew a lot in the 707s, then 424 SAR. Great memories for sure. 👍
What is this sharpner and where can I get one

Thanks for posting this great piece. I love history.
LOL I'm sorry, but I've been watching "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia".... So... He took Minister of Defense out on the boat to discuss building the base, and he couldn't say no, you know, because of the implication...
Of valuable heritage and historical value. Thank you for your services everyone and God Bless!
