OC Dome Rain Sensor hard wire AAG Cloudwatcher
Просмотров 7144 года назад
DIY at your own risk. This connection allows an AAG Cloudwatcher or other weather device with an emergency relay to talk to the Nexdome controller. The input goes to the rain sensor input pin and the firmware will close the shutter if it detects a danger condition. If you do yourself please be careful. I suggest installing a header to make the wire connection.
OC Dome- Nexdome on plywood?!
Просмотров 9435 лет назад
hey, sometimes you have to make it work even if it’s ugly. This is a redneck engineers way to get it done. Might not be official from either Nexdome or skyshed pod. I’d love feedback. When I need to replace the plywood I will probably go with pressure treated lumber and make an octagon ring or something. But for now the decking is holding.
OC dome update- Telescope Mullet

We are rocking the Telescope reverse mullet, all business at the back and party at the front. the science camera on the back is for photometry of exoplanets. the front Hyperstar 3 with camera is for use with students/ EAA. Yes, I know you can’t use them both at once, but by removing the hyperstar and adding an ADM counterweight, we can easily rebalance on planet hunting nights. we have tried to...

I look at the damage after the dome top blew off and knocked over the mount. We were blessed that the damage was minimal and correctable. Tracking performs within factory spec.

Does anyone know the size specs for the Bearings?
Yes, I am experiencing the same noise on my fairly new CGX-L mount. The noise seemed to have abated a bit when the temperature outside was a little cooler. Since I am not mechanically inclined, I do not want to perform any "surgery" on the mount. If it continues to work well, I will just have to put up with the noise (a shame given the high price I paid for it). To end on a positive note, despite the noise, I am VERY pleased with its performance and associated software. I would recommend buying it to anyone who would ask me.
Dear Dave, I've the same problem now 😢 how did you solve the problem? Please help me! I'm an Italian teacher and next week I'll have an astronomy course with my students 😢 Thank you very much in advance!
I run my MYT at this payload weight as well, the mount performs great. I move rig to the MYT from another mount with a 100# payload rating because the MYT motor, drive, and worm gear is actually more robust than the other 100# rated mount
I wish I had watched your video before (recently) purchasing one. Others have said it, but it is worth repeating: terrible engineering! The problem was easily prevented by simply lowering the angle on the portion of the arm closest to the polar axis. Thanks again for the video...until I saw it, I couldn't help but think it was user error in my end.
Stupid friggen video. I have no clue why you posted this. No instructions, no setup shots no result shots just a lot of B.S. about how it works. Dumber than the police should allow
The worst mount I have ever used. Always something going wrong
Buying a CGX mount was my biggest mistake in 2023, and I won't consider this company again
I got Bob's Knobs, but once I get good at Collimation I may put the screws back on, they hold a Collimate a lot longer from what I've heard.
Excellent video. Thank you for the tour!
hi Dave, looks like you have a skyshed pod base....am i wrong...?......if so was it easy to put the rotator motor to fit....?
You are right. And no, it wasn’t easy. I had to work with my limited school budget. I used the Nexdome wheel base and a plywood ring to level things up. The dome top was supposed to fit the pod base ideally but mine had gotten a little warped with age. After putting on the ring and wheels it put the track in a spot where I could attach the motor and gear. I had to use some plywood creativity to line everything up. It worked for a couple of years and this year I scrapped the whole thing and built a roll off roof shack. Mainly because lining up the slot and the battery charger were a PITA and I kept wrecking my batteries. $75 each time so I decided no more batteries and I’m using a garage door opener now. Very glad I changed.
What ADM adapter is that? I need to mount my StarSense underneath as well. Thank you!
i came here around last week on the opening day and oh my lord i loved it! i was around most of the people i should be!
Hey Dave, could you please send me the model of the battery to get. Kids moved the dome around and didnot return it to its home position. Been trying to repair the battery but its probably beyond repair now. Are there instructions on how to replace the battery? DO I need to take off the whole thing or just remove the cover and be able to do it?
This is Dave under a different account. When you take off the battery cover you will find a Duracell 12V (or similar) that is used in mobility scooters or motorcycle starters. I found a replacement at a batteries plus store. You could also order online but at the battery store they are kept charged. There is a similar one size wise that is used in computer UPSs. But you might asked the store helper because I think the one for UpSs might not be meant for deep discharge and doesn’t like to be drained down low. One or the other of the models can handle getting down to 10V better than the other. Its not too hard to replace. I think it is stuck to the metal using 3M double sided mounting tape. You don’t have to take the whole thing off, just the cover. Good luck!
Thank you Dave✌🏼
I came here cause I have the same sounds - they come and go but my guess was the housing is vibrating - I was going to take my covers off today and adjust everything - I also found that it rained recently and my 365 cover actually had moisture inside it so I was wondering if there's now moisture in the housing or motors. Did you find out? I will try to post tonight.
If Celestron put as much resources into their quality control as they do into their marketing & emails, they would be an awesome company. Great 'on paper' mounts let down by non existent quality control.
Great presentation!
Thanks!
Says a lot about their quality assurance. Mine suffers from RA striction as is the case with many Celestron CGX users. Personally, I won't purchase Celestron equipment again.
Hello, could you please indicate the specs of the bearings you replaced?
Is sad watching your scope hiring the base.I was researching to buy a dome. Was leaning toward nexdome . But I live in Fontana. The winds are really bad during January and February. Perhaps it will be better the skyshed pod even though I will loose part of zenith.
This is Dave on a private account. I actually just converted to a roll off roof setup using Lunatico dragonfly. Everything is wired and I have a 12V gate lock that adds extra hold. The garage door opener by itself is enough, but better safe than sorry. I have been up there during heavy winds and the garage opener has plenty of hold on it. If you have the option I think it’s a better setup and you have more room to move around. I have a 35 degree horizon and it’s better. No slot sync to worry about.
@@jamestickle3070 did you build a new ROR observatory?, did you lose all your money with nexdome?
@@enriquebechet1 I got I think 5 good years out of it. Lucky for me I work for a university and technically it’s their money :) but I wish I had just saved up a little and gone roll off from the start. The dragonfly is so useful in reading sensors and working with my automation software Viking and Voyager that it is much more logical and fail safe than the dome options. I didn’t do ROR at first because I thought the building itself and lumber would be expensive but I wish I could email myself from the future and say to hold out for ROR. Really it wasn’t that bad because I did all the labor. Total materials was less than $3000 including the dragonfly and other electronics to make it work.
@@jamestickle3070 I take your example to not make same mistake. Where can I find information to mails my ROR . I am kinda of hands of person. I assembled my storage shed for my scopes . I spent $1800 in materials it is only 8x4 i I wish I could got a bigger since the beginning.
@@enriquebechet1 are you looking for plans? to be honest I kinda made it up as I went. I had to deal with some weird issues and limits most people don’t have. There are some good sites with plans and people who thought out the layout for a DIY build. But I had to just make up a way to fit mine on a roof at a college.
Ed Foley seems to be out of the business now. He said he would put a kit together for me but that hasn't happened and he isn't responding to voicemail or email. Is there any chance that you have a record of the replacement bearings. Manufacturer and stock or part number might help me find them.
I’m sorry, I didn’t keep it. Oh, this is Dave btw. I use a pseudonym for general surfing RUclips.
Actually I had a thought. The bearing looked just like a standard thing. Kind of reminded me of a kids fidget spinner. If you have calipers you might just measure the inside and outside diameters and the width and look in the web. I’m been surprised how many weird things I can find easy on Amazon.
Nice spotting scope
Dave, as a high school astronomy teacher, I admire your presentation, preparation, and collection of artifacts. Your students are very fortunate to have you.
For some crack you might use marine tex Epoxy repair
having the same problem , i really thought it was my guide cam ,guide star would all of a sudden just jump 12 or so pixels , had a look today at the RA was no movement as in your video , freed it up a little 1mm tops , will see how it turns out ,
Sad. Clearly not understanding mechanics, optics, or even astronomy. Lots of basic mistakes. Try not going to the home switches.
No actual footage of collimation? We are all left to guess what the process actually looks like.
Great video, really help me figure out how to install the shutter retention kit. Incidentally, the first 20 seconds of the video are blank.
You're really helping me pass my astronomy course thank you!
ruclips.net/video/7T1jFKuUag8/видео.html. Use this process instead. He does a great job explaining the proper way to do the adjustment. Don’t just randomly turn screws like this guy.
I got mine for the 8 Inch Edge HD and they do not have the white plastic washers.
So helpful! Thank you!
Does skyportal work with a phone that doesn't have a gyro? Can you just work it using the camera on the phone?
Man, glad I didn't buy this. I don't think much of ASPA and wanted an alternative. I should have gone with an EQ6-PRO
Great explanation !! Clear and to the point..
Thaks Dave... I'm experiencing exactly that "jumping stars" problem... Did this fix it?
How much backfocus are you getting with the moonlight focuser? Cause I use an SBIG setup that takes up 108mm of backfocus with just my image train.. Since i use AO
Nice. Still struggling even with Bob's knobs on my edgehd8" cause I usually change to hyperstar and vice versa which messes up easily the collimation everytime. On another note, How did u manage to add counter weight on the dovetail end?
"Come on, people!" Love that quote! And I know who you directed it at!! And I couldn't agree with you more. THE very first thing I saw in the background of your video was the CGX with the plastic cover removed from the DEC axis. I haven't had the cover on my DEC axis for about 6 mos now, because obviously I've been giving it an inordinate amount of attention. "Its just irritating!"
Hey, Dave, well i eventually got my dome built, and pretty much the same issues, track needing additional hole drilled, they have also changed the metal plate on the motor assembly to a thick plastic one, so the original bolts that you are meant to reuse don't fit.....Anyway, the main issue I have now is the after about a a foot open the drive cog skips on the chain, did you have this issue and if so, how did you solve it? (I have put additional washers on the roof wheels to raise them slightly and also silicon grease sprayed all rubbing surfaces)
And now you get a problem with the dew-cap.
Thanks Dave, I had just put the roof on the dome today, but not looked at the electronics/motors yet, and now I see I need to take things off again.......AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! At least I know what to expect now, big thanks.
If the fans are sucking will Draw in dust. Just look at a pc after awhile all the dust inside. No dust filters bad idea. You dont want to attract dust in scope. That's why I am not keen on these hd scopes having vents. Great setup anyway
Why is there a hole on your vent
The are 2 things I don't like, the 4 arrows keys, not flush like skywatcher and prefer Meade's red led display, easier to read
Thank you for uploading. I got the chance to view a rocket launch in 2018. Memorable experience. I shared a pretty fun video of the trip to my channel.
DAMN POD WALLS - MY full nexdome has been in 60-70 mph straight line wind storms. TREES down several times over the past 4 years and I NEVER STRAP IT DOWN not from in or outside. Because I'm remote.
Searching for a backyard dome now. Thanks for this video because in Wyoming we have 40-50mph sustained winds on a regular basis. Can’t be worried about the dome coming off every time. May have to invest the big money and get a Pulsar Observatory. They test their domes in a wind tunnel. Sorry for your troubles.
If I was building a new observatory I would do a roll off roof. The slot really limits you because anything bigger than an 11” scope will make it where the guidescope can’t see out.
I have the green one. Love it. Just bought the reducer for it.
