Bamboo Acres Farm
Добавлен 6 авг 2012
Hi there! We are Jason and Jordan, raising our two beautiful girls (and one on the way) on our small farm in Western Washington.
Jason is a K9 Police Officer by day, and went to school for natural resources. On his days off from work, he enjoys woodworking, saw-milling (with our WoodMizer LT15), gardening, landscaping.. and has a serious passion for bamboo! We currently have around 15 different varieties that we hope to grow and propagate here on the farm.
Jordan used to own a landscape design company, and went to school for ecology. Currently, though, she is a stay at home mama to the girls. She enjoys gardening, cooking and food preservation, woodworking, and Pyrography (wood-burning)… and hopes to make that into another small business soon!
Thanks so much for following along as we raise on family on the land 🌱

How to Prune Your Cherry Trees

How to prune your cherry tree. In this video, I’m pruning a juvenile Bing cherry tree that is about 5 years old.
Excellent work. thank you
Thank you, best tutorial ever.
The dogwood tree you have planted is actually a "Welch's Junior Miss" dogwood. I used to work at Welch's Nursery in Wilmer, Alabama as a young man and Mr. Welch is credited with developing the tree and naming it for the Junior Miss young women that are the elite young ladies from local high schools here in Mobile' Alabama. He once told me when asked, that he found it while walking the woods, and gave me a grin at the end of the story. I guess we may never know, but that is the history of the pink and red flowering dogwoods that you see today. Good video and take good care of the dogwood :).
Hi, what was your outcome with the pig farming? I pray all is well with your family.
Hi, thanks for the cherry tree pruning information. You were very informative for a beginner pruner. One Q: what time of year are you pruning? Thanks again
So glad I found this video, perfect timing. I received 4 Bing sweet cherry trees, as my mother's day gift, 4 sons, 4 trees, blessed.
I have a 5yr old cherry tree which has never been pruned, just a tall tree 9ft with leaves on top ..can I cut tree to 4ft in spring? Ty
I’d like to buy a native one here in mid Missouri…but I can’t find one at a store. Tempted to steal one but I won’t.
my tree i think is about 35 years old. I moved it from the back to the front. someone cut it down to a stump and it put a shoot out before dying. I've been watching it for maybe 10 years. I dug up the stump and all, height wise its about 4 foot tall. its 3 large roots (2 inch thick) I cut those at about a foot. Do you have any tips to developing the small feeder roots. I really do not want to over water.
Does this apply to choke cherry trees also? I have a bunch in the backyard forest that have been choked out from honeysuckle. Most are going straight up because of competition. Would it be a good idea to trim them back also for more fruit production?
Great video and explanation! Appreciate the detail and reasons behind what you are doing!
I can have it in a pot and not on the ground, thanks
When is the best time of year to prune a cherry?
Nice little tree it looks very productive.
Great teaching!! Would love to see a follow up video too.
I misheard you at first. I heard “butt clusters” - which quickly cemented the term in my head. Ha! This is the level of detail and explanation I have been searching for on ag extensions for years, so thank you. The “why” in what you are doing is what helps it all click. Pruning is an art - Sending this to my husband - he tends to take a pole saw to everything.
I hope you post an update of what this tree looks like this year, and if you are pruning it again. Really well explained and demonstrated!
Best cherry tree pruning video out there, and I have watched many. I have a Stella cherry tree that is so overgrown and about 12 years old. I get tons of cherries but I will start pruning using your techniques. I get the cherries from the lower branches and the birds get the higher ones.
I am hoping we get to see the apple tree pruning soon? Great instructional video. I’m watching for a second time to freshen up before the pruning.
Great video, thank you
Can't wait to see updates from this winter's pruning and the apple tree's also. Thanks for the video.
Is it possible to plant dogwood and black gum as a no dig over grass? It’s not as wet as here but I’m on a slope so I’m trying to raise that area
You said they like a 30, 70 mix of soil and compost. Which % is the compost?
We need more sheep videos!
Thank you just rented one for a week so far love it first time standing on the back so nice can see all over also I move it standing next to it if need take care God bless
I rent it before! Awesome machine ! Better then bobcat !
I've watched no less than 30 videos and read dozens of articles in regards to cherry pruning, but none of them gave me the confidence to start cutting up my baby cherry tree (4 years old now). This is the best one I've watched so far, and I'm now looking forward to my first pruning session this winter. Thanks man!
Just subbed because of this video. Someone i can watch and understand as a newbie.
Simply the best tutorial I've yet found - big thank you!
I like to get the shape of my tree formed at a younger age your lower branches will rise up as the tree gets older you don't want that tree to be too high.
I think you need to take it back below that big mess you got right in the middle its probably going to have to come off anyway in in the years to come and the longer you wait the more cherry blossoms you can end up cutting off. Better to do it earlier.
I live in Victoria Australia and discovered one of the trees in my backyard is a cherry tree, to my absolute delight. Your video is so informative and easy to understand. I have learned so much from it. Thank you 😀🙏
Very self sufficient ❤
I just bought my home have huge dogwoods everywhere - taller than a two story house - ❤❤❤
Thank you for showing very thoroughly how to plant in a wet location!
Excellent video however truthfully the music in the background could have been eliminated. I found it slightly distracting.
What music It’s so low that I can hardly hear it.. Voice is easily heard and quite crisp for me personally
Can dogwood trees provide us with anything useful/edible?
You have been one of the very few video producers that explain everything so clearly! Learned a lot from this video! Good job!
so much conflicting advice out there; the nursery i got mine from said dont take it out of the burlap
Hessian biodegrades, no need to remove and doesn’t harm the plants. We plant thousands of trees a year this way, only reason to remove is if you have another use for it elsewhere
Contact your local extension office in your county for the science based advise.
Ditch Witch is the best of the best imo. Other is vemeer. Dingo is eh. Stay away from cheap plastic bobcat mini skids.
I planted 3 tiny cherry trees about 3 years ago and haven't touched them because I couldn't find a *good* tutorial and I was afraid I'd do them more harm. Your video is very informative and helpful and I feel like I have enough information to get them spruced up this year. Thank you! I was reading that sweet cherries should be pruned at the end of summer and sour cherries while they are still dormant. Do you follow that schedule?
Thank you!
I live in Indiana and I watched your video and it is just fascinating. ❤ I put it in my favorites for future use. You did a great job of explaining how to trim: I have a sour cherry tree and this video was so easy to follow. Thank you so much posting it. 😊
Thank you 😊 glad I could help!
What do you do if your tree is around 6 ft tall and has a main branch going right up the center that is pretty thick and taller then the side leads? I want to try and keep my fruit trees not much taller than 6 or 7 ft if possible even though they aren't dwarfs, is that possible?
Remember the rule of 1/3rds when pruning. I would find a good cluster of lateral branches to be your new main branches and cut out the center personally but it’s entirely up to you.
Excellent Explanation! In my cherry tree, the tag attached has partially burrowed in to the main stem (within 2ft from ground). What can I do? I tried to pull it, partially got cut and the remaining is inside the trunk.
As long as it doesn’t entirely cover all the way around the tree, you should be okay. Hopefully you were able to get at least half of it off? There is a good chance it will stunt the growth for a year or two until the cambium layer can fully scar over and essentially grow over it. Keep an eye on the wound of the tree. You may see sap building up in the area which is common. Your biggest concern is not letting pests and or diseases inside the wound. They do make a paste that you can cover the effected area and should be able to get some at a local plant nursery if needed.
These are handy little machines but unfortunately you basically have to buy them new.. guys selling them used for like 12 dollars less than they paid from the dealer.
Bc u cant get them new... 2yr wait time. I paid 33k for 600hr one 2yr old. Pricy sure but either add $$ to biz with one for more $ or don't add $$ and wait two years. 12k under new would b a great deal depending on hours they're about 45k new
@@danieldmytriw3276 I was quoted 28K from the dealer in 2018 for a brand new machine. These things are going to tank in value next recession. Last I checked my dealer said 8 months to get one.. and yeah that is why they are so expensive.. eventually they will have these things sitting on the lot again and they will have to lower their prices.. they'll never be 28K again but 2018 wasn't that long ago. New ones will be under 35K eventually. My Takeuchi dealer had an empty lot for two years but now when I drive by they have several machines out by the road, for sale. Shortages made prices go way up, a surplus will make them go way down. 45K for a 25HP mini is absurd.
Dealers here in Florida are sitting on everything.
Before you buy ask for a maintenance records from the DW dealer they bought it from. Most people selling them don't do hardly any routine maintenance. Trust me I work for DW so I see it everyday. Remember you only get out of it what you put into it !
Can they handle clay soil?
Yes but if you add compost around the rootball the tree will thank you.
Thank you. Great tutorial!
I can't hear you.
Since you like the heritage breed livestock, check out the Mangalica (mongalitsa) pigs. Very friendly and hardy, can take outdoor weather with ease, great foragers, and the best part is the healthy fat. The Wagyu of Swine. You can grow a lot of the things pigs eat on a large farm garden plot. Also growing alfalfa is very easy my 80 yo grandma does it by hand. Amazing what people were able to do without modern implements and tractors etc..
That canker in the crotch of that tree is going to be very problematic for the health of the tree.
I’ve recently planted a semi dwarf Morrello cherry here in the UK. It was supplied perfectly pruned, but this video is a great lesson for the future. The best tutorial on fruit pruning that I’ve seen. Thanks 👍
