I do this service myself every year but didn't know about removing the condensate dirt trap and cleaning it out. When I removed the clip on mine and removed this cap, out poured about a pint or less of water (condensate) which very much surprised me! I did this in the winter and should have expected some water to be present I guess. This is NOT in the operations manual to do this, so I'm glad it is in this video. I descaled mine for one hour using Hercules Haymaker descaler solution (citrus based) rather than vinegar as vinegar just smells way too strong to me (even though it would be much cheaper). One thing I did was to run the heater before servicing it to get it hot as well as use hot water when mixing in the Haymaker descaler solution (1 QT to 1Gal of hot water). YMMV.

Should you turn of the gas valve running to the digital meter on off when you are draining the heater?

This video is an absolute gem, thank you! If anyone has a tankless with a recirculation system, you’ll need to close the valve on the recirculation loop before opening the service valves to drain the heater.

Hi - I need to flush my Navien tankless unit out and have watched a couple of videos. Cleaned the filters and got ready for the flush but I noticed that my service valves are below my my supply valves. So if I shut my supply valves and hook up hoses to the service valves no water will enter the unit. Did my plumber plumb this wrong and is it ok to leave the supply valves open to flush the unit or do I need to get it re-plumbed? I do have a cold water inlet valet on the main line and another cold water supply valve for what it is worth.

Yesterday I started to do the annual Rinnai Maintenance flush. The exit water (Hot Side) port stopped flowing. I unplugged the Circulating Pump, plugged it back in, and the exit flow started for a brief time, then stopped. The Circulating Pump is OK, I checked it to be sure it was working properly. With the Unit turned back on, we are getting a Hot Water (supply) flow as expected? Any Thoughts?

I just had someone install a Bradford White for me. They didn't put unions in. They used all crimped/pressed connections. When I questioned them about it, they told me it was their practice to use the pressed or crimped connections and not install unions. What do you think about that?

This video has been very, very helpful to me for doing the descaling and other cleaning. One thing that is not in the video and I forgot to do myself during my last cleaning is to clean the recirculating inlet filter in addition to the cold water intake filter. (This is only needed if your system is designed and set up for automatic recirculation.) My last cleaning I forgot to do this and the cleaning didn't fix my recirculation problem. (It wasn't working due to shutting off because of the buildup in the recirculation inlet filter.) I just figured this out, cleaned it, and the recirculation is working again!

My house sat for 2 years, and my hot water has been milky since the day I moved in 4 years ago. My kitchen sink doesn't even look clean when I clean it. It looks chalky. Also, because the water smelled like sulfur, I had to install some sort of iron-breaker sulfur system to remove the smell before I moved in. I'm trying to figure out what material anode rod I should purchase that will take care of both problems. I see anode rods come in a variety of materials. Magnesium, aluminum, titanium...

With this configuration, is it ok to shut off one hot water heater and run on only one while keeping the shut-off hot water in place? The reason why I am asking is in the event one of the hot heaters starts leaking. Would like to simply turn off the leaking hot water heater and run on only one.....? Thanks.

My 75 gallon Bradford White from 2020 has a dedicated anode rod hole instead of the hot water outlet. My problem is that they say the anode rod is about 50” long and yet I only have about 30” of ceiling clearance. Ughh.

I've never had a water heater where they used unions at the top, I've always had to cut the pipe. I think some plumbers do this on purpose because most home owners don't know how to sweat pipe.

Awesome video, thank you! A question about the last part: instead of using the garden hose to get the vinegar out, can we just open the isolation valves and open the kitchen hot water faucet for 10 minutes? Sure, we'd get some vinegar into the house hot water pipes, but after running water for 10 minutes, there shouldn't be much left... (plus, we'll be running even more hot water daily anyway)

One would think BW would use a five inch nipple for HW/anode piece. Poor design.BW parts are way overpriced and available only on line to us plebes. I guess their tanks are equivalent to everybody else because six year warranties are standard for the big names. When I replace I’ll use a Smith brand.

What a clear, straightforward explanation of "how to"! I installed one of these water heaters for the home I built last year and cleaning the thing has been hanging over my head for the last few months (yes, I read the manual BUT, the tech writer Navien hired obviously had no idea what he was attempting to get across to the average user. Thank you very much - this was time well spent!

  • @DebDDigger

The inlet water filter that you show in this video (minute 9:05) looks like mine. It was a bear to take out and worse to reinstall the previous 2 years. It was completely destroyed when I took it out this year. I bought a new one that absolutely would not go in. I was able to install the filter without the orange flow restricter, so that's what I did. The reason I felt comfortable doing this is because your earlier video from 5 years ago shows a shorter filter without the flow restricter at 6:12 minutes. In addition, the User's Manual shows the shorter filter on page 12 and the parts list for the waterway assembly (11.4.3) also shows the filter without the restricter (item #12). But when I ordered the part by by the number given (30007878A), the part that arrived had a cup for the flow restricter. Would it be possible for you to make a video that clears up this confusion?

  • @maviblue1168

Thank you for the video it is perfect demonstration. I understand that we do not need descaling for boiler side. How about don't we need to clean filter on boiler side? It looks like there is another filter in that side.
