Hi all, David here. Made in Taiwan. I arrived in the states 10+ years ago at the age of 24. The roads are bumpy and full of adventures. I'm here to share my experiences and how I see the world from the perspective of an LGBTQ member and an immigrant.
Besides documenting my struggles and happy moments in life, my mission/hope is to help and entertain LGBTQ community members with the possibilities of a self-made life and flatten the learning curve in your own journey.

I'm in a cross-cultural relationship as well. I'm Canadian, and he's Filipino. Fortunately for us his English is very good, but I know he struggles at times. It doesn't help that he's still in the Philippines so he hasn't had the chance to be immersed into Canadian use of English, aside from me. When I visit there he's very accommodating around food. He's the adventurous cook, while I cook very few things. We find a balance, or we have different things in a meal from time to time. To be honest, culturally, I feel more at home there than in Canada, even with its more conservative values. A part of me has never felt at home here in Canada, or in the U.S. when I went to university there. Our friendship is fairly strong. We both like to hang out at home, even if we are doing our own thing. Sometimes we plan to go somewhere, and then both decide we'd rather stay home. We are very compatible that way. One big difference is family. He's very close to his family. I've lived away from mine for a very long time. In some ways that makes it easier. I feel closer to his nieces and nephews than my own. We are both very easy going, without overly strong opinions, so I think that helps tremendously. And some of our habits were so similar, even before we met in person. Being in an LDR, communication is our most important connection point. And we seem to do well. We rarely have disagreements, which is likely our weak point, but I attribute that to both being easy going and not overly concerned with our differing opinions.
Thanks for sharing your story. I think it helps others to hear stories from others experiences. I hear of more people who don't struggle with accepting themselves, but there's still a long way to go until that struggle is gone completely. And the struggle of coming out will likely be a thing for quite a while because I don't see society changing enough for people to stop assuming everyone is straight. As much as I'd like to see that change, with the percentage of the population who are gay being so small it probably wouldn't make sense for that assumption to change a lot, unfortunately.
Thank you, it was a must-have video! Do I have to speak English because I am not good at English? Or do I need to go with someone to translate for me? I'm going to do fingerprinting next week, but I'm so nervous. Then, bye. Have a nice day.. 👀👍
@Smurf77777 I think for a biometrics appointment, your language skill is less of a concern. It also seems that you are able to communicate in English pretty well. All you need to do is follow their instructions when they get your photo and fingerprint. Good luck!
Do they allow someone to go to translate for you?
This is such a detailed run through and just what I need. Thank you so much ❤

Hello sir, I missed my biometric appointment for us citizenship because of being out of my state. Is it already denied or I need to wait? What should I do please tell me…
Hi @Tabia Taskin, I'm sorry that you missed your appointment. I'd encourage you to see if there is contact info on the appointment notice and get in touch with them during their work hours as soon as possible to see if there is something you can do. I'm sorry I don't have the answer for this but I would not just wait. Good luck!
Hello David, how are you? Thank you so much for your content, it was super helpful!! Quick question: I'm putting together all docs to send to USCIS. Where am I supposed to pay the biometric services fee of $85? Do I have to send a separate check together with my package, or do I pay this fee when I go to the application support center in person to collect my biometrics?
@Lucas Melo Glad to hear that you find it helpful! For your question, I'd be happy to share my experience. In my case of marriage green card, we sent in two checks to the US Department of Homeland Security: 1. $1,225 - This includes both the Green Card Application Form (I-485 | Cost: $1,140) and the Biometrics Appointment (Cost: $85) 2. $535 - Family Sponsorship (Form I-130 | Cost: $535) I hope this helps and good luck on your application!
Very nice .
Congrats guys. I would grab that big too. The only thing that sucks here is biological family didn't seem to show up. But you have found your person so screw them
@John lii Thanks, John! And the reason why our family members weren't with us was because it was meant to be small, and also because of the pandemic. I only had my mom and brothers online because I wanted someone on my side. And Dan's parents were no longer with us unfortunately. I know where you are coming from though and appreciate the support! 😁
@@pankuohsuan That sounds weird and controlling
Hey John, how so? And sorry, I probably wasn't being very clear. The context was that we wanted to have a small wedding first due to time constraints, and a bigger one later which we will have more official invites. We wanted only immediate family members and a couple of friends for the small one. Maybe this helps clarify?
@@pankuohsuan I get it. My husband and I just the city hall thing. It wasn't about anyone else other than us. Your situation as just a bit different that you had to do it for legal reasons on your citizenson so you don't get deported. It's one of the reasons we fought so hard for marriage since it brings so many legal benefits most take for granted.
Totally! Imagine what the couples had to go through and were forced to break up before same-sex marriage was federally legalized...☹️
Interesting, though having had 15+ years of relationships with Asian guys (10 years for the relationship I thought would be forever, sniff), and none born or raised in the US, I've experienced these things to a varying degree, but what's more important I think is the varying personalities of all involved. Fortunately the food thing came easy (credit a Cambodian lover who was accomplished in both Chinese and Vietnamese food, plus a multiculti metro area). Later, sometimes I actually preferred eating more Asian than my partner. Though I also adjusted my cooking style, which was especially tough in the early cohabitation years when money was tight and my budget repertoire leaned heavily toward milk/butter/cream based casserole's. Internal communication was never really a problem, externally I had to stop being a translator - eventually I realized that was demeaning. In moments of great emotion I also had to learn to pull back; it's not fair to steamroll over someone who isn't finding the words, or worse (rage) when English totally deserts them. But I do think you're right and we (the native speaker) tend to forget all the inborn advantages. Not to mention that, with the 'right' ethnicity and education, we're often given a free pass or at least lots of favorable assumptions that others are not. (Oddly, that even seems to carry over in the maybe 3 months I've spent in SE Asia over the years - you might be treated like a rube, but you're still an American - discussion for another day lol) Oh, finally language: with a little bit of English, I can work with any accent and derive meaning. But, aside from a smattering for French and much much less Spanish - I am the product of US schools and a frozen brain: no foreign language capability at all, let alone anything tonal!
@joe seeking Wow, thanks for sharing, Joe! So glad to hear that the content resonated somehow. And eating more Asian than your partner? That's interesting! I also loved hearing about your communication side of experiences. English does desert us non-native speakers sometimes (heck even Chinese desert me now), haha. And I think it's a learning process for both the native and foreigner speakers. A lot of times certain langauge use is a habit, as in things come out automatically without thought, and it doesn't always come out right. As a foreign speaker, I do personally find that I have to be more intentional at times to make sure what I'm communicating is getting across correctly. And for the native speaker, it also takes a certain level of patience and understanding, which I always appreciate it. 😉
David I had a similar except that mine was one that lasted and still is with me. I like your story even though you are way younger than me. but thanks for sharing it and giving me some, late, but helpful overcoming to the inner experience.
@David Cortes Thank you for watching, and glad to hear that you liked it! 😀
I literally felt the same way as you do the moment I found myself more attracted to boys than girls at that age. I tried so hard to suppress it because of the pressure surrounding me. Yet years later, I found myself in Senior high, this time I grew up a lot and found a place where my prejudices started to go away. I've never been a romantic in the past years of high school until I met this guy. We were assigned to be teammates in a contest. He is charming, outgoing and confident. Though I find his confidence overbearing and his little dances annoys me during our first meeting. Fast forward, our team get to win the preliminaries and we started to see each other more to practice for the finals. Weeks of practices later, on the day of the finals, as we wait for the time of the contest, I discovered that he likes drawing, and he has all of my dream drawing materials at that time. Sparkly-eyed, he let me draw in his sketchbook, admiring how the graphite feels, I assume he sensed I really wanted the pencils so bad. A few hours later, just before the contest started, I returned the pencils to him yet, to my surprise, he willingly gave it to me. The contest ended celebrating our victory, and there, we started to become strangers to each other again. A few months have passed, it was October, I entered another contest in the hopes of winning again (all the while subconsciously hoping to see him again). I indeed saw him, but this time, we're on separate teams. I remember one twilight, after we finished our practice, I can feel him repeatedly staring at me. Turns out he is a close friend with one of my teammates. I ran back and forth from the area he is sitting because I was busy at that time. But there was this magnetizing energy I feel every time I pass by him. I was about to go home when he suddenly approached me. He talked to me first and we smoothly drifted to having to catch up with each other for a little bit. He pulled something out of his bag. He gave me the rest of his pencils. Surprised, I found myself speechless. To make things less awkward, he thought of a way to politely end the conversation, and I thanked him a lot for his generosity. I held the pencils tightly with my hands as I walked and felt the cold air with my smile facing the purple sky. My heart started to rapidly beat, my knees weakening, and I found myself overwhelmed with gratitude. Songs have started playing in my head, and in that moment, I knew I have feelings for him.
@Jaques Dupain What a story. Thank you for sharing! Totally get the "magnetizing energy" you are referring to. And it sounded like he really liked you, too. 😄
@@pankuohsuan awhhh thank you so much for reading it! It's actually my first time sharing this story to anyone and it's kinda freeing knowing that I was able to do it. I don't really know what he actually feels and our fate is telling me that I won't be able to. Prom night came and I saw him hugging a girl he was with all night. They both seem to be so romantic and looks good together. It was two years ago when that happened, then the pandemic came and we parted schools. I tried to keep the connection going by reaching out but as usual, it didn't worked that long. It was the first time I acknowledged and accepted my feelings towards someone of the same sex and it's also the first time I discovered how painful it can be.
@Jaques Dupain Of course. I'm SO glad that you are able to share the story. And it must have been hard and painful for you back then. Feelings and emotions are tricky. I totally feel you. My experience with Zach was when I started to know to differentiate my feelings, specifically towards the same sex. "Fun" times!
@@pankuohsuan "Fun" times, indeed 😂. And yes, feelings and emotions are tricky, especially when adolescent hormones ain't being cooperative. I hope I'll be able to go through it someday. ✨We can do this✨
Don't blog and dive. Even more dangerous than texting. Not really excited about this marriage thing for you (all though i understand the legal necessity). There is just too much doubt there in your words and voice. You're not really feeling it. That rarely ends well.
@John Iii Thank you for sharing your concerns. I was very careful with the camera fixed on the dashboard while it recorded but I totally see where you are coming from. I'll keep it in mind! In terms of how I was feeling, it's a bit concerning if that's how I come across in the video. But if it helps, Dan and I made the mutual decision, and we are happy about it. Hopefully, that will somehow show in videos of us! 😉
@@pankuohsuan No worries dude but you could see you taking your eyes off the road to look at the camera. I will rarely even talk on the phone anymore driving after a couple of experiences where I didn't even remember the drive since i was so involved in the conservation. On autopilot.
I'm loving your videos. Your obviously a very smart guy that's very thoughtful. I'm shaking my head in agreement as your talking in most cases. That's rare for me. You know what your talking about so that's what's I appreciate. It's just also obvious to me you're a good dude. Dan is a lucky guy. Not Asian, but my Husband is Columbian and we definitely had to figure out issues since I'm the typical US white guy. Had to learn his native spanish, family culture etc as he was integrating into both the country and our relationship. The fun part for me was learning the new language and foods. The hard part was the family situation them being very catholic, relgious anti gay etc. We almost broke up over that since I don't deal well with the closet. But we ended up working all that out with some time. Now his mama won't stop calling me lol. Multi culture is definitely a challenge but I love it. It's a lot less boring and your constantly learning something new.
@John Iii So glad to hear that you are enjoying the videos! Comments like these are very encouraging for me, so thank you! ❤️ And I loved hearing your story. I can totally see how the religious beliefs and having to hide your sexuality must have posed serious challenges for you. Very happy to hear that you were able to work things out and integrate with your husband's culture! Dan is open to learning new things as well. We are both lucky to be able to share our cultures with each other. I also have heard stories about people not being as flexible to their partner's culture, so I wanted to touch on that in the video and provide a solution/alternative/perspective. 😉
Even though I've gotten my AARP card now, I can totally relate. I'd say self-awareness began to dawn around 11, fully aware in all its manifestations by 13. The best friends, the cool kids, the people I just wanted to BE. That was the feeling / I wanted to merge my being - physically, emotionally - with theirs. I could literally vibrate to their mood. But expressed only in daredevil feats (stupid kid shit, but sometimes dangerous), dreams of sacrificing myself to save my friend (at least this was honorable I thought) and half completed sentences across twin beds at sleepovers or maybe venturing just a little more truth camping in a pup tent. But never would I ever say, let alone DO anything. By 14 I knew the score, I knew the game and I knew the politics: so I just fit in. And for the next 3-4 years I either dated girls I really liked and would not hurt - or when the need arose, became strategically caught in intimate situations with those I didn't really care about. (Not so proud of that). But I always knew college would come, in the big city (5 major Universities, and some smaller schools) and then I'd rethink the whole thing on my own terms. Plus, honestly, it wasn't such a bad deal - the HS years were the only time I was in the A list crowd, both grades and parties :) So, yeah, I'm kind of glad I was able to make a choice, and not unhappy with the one I chose.
@joe seeking Hi, Joe, thank you for sharing your story. To me, it is very brave of you to reflect on your past choices and be self-aware, and what really counts is that you eventually were able to make ones that you can later be proud of. Very happy that you were able to find your way. It's worth celebrating! 😁 P.S. Just a fun fact if you don't know, people don't need to be over 50 to get their AARP card! So for all I know, you are 21. 😂
I just rewatched in detail ( last night it quick run thru) and this is actually great material on what your thinking etc at that stage of life. And also the cultural aspect. But you're doing great so you seem to have navigated it well. And as you describe it, "Zack" dude seems like a pretty good guy so I get why it's still in your mind. From how you tell it, it treated you with respect and wasn't a bully to you. That's often the most important thing when you are younger.
@John Iii Interesting to hear that you watched it twice. It's so intriguing to me how people consume content! And yes, the video did allow me to reflect on the past. Zach was a good friend for sure but I only really thought about it when I thought about that confusing time period. Being treated with respect is so basic, yet sometimes neglected and replaced by unnecessary ridicule. Hopefully, by sharing such stories, there is more awareness of the struggles that LGBTQIA members can have. 🙂
3 six grade asian kids trying to MJ. that was funny how you put it.
I entertained myself a bit, too, when I was reminiscing. 😆
You really think the people from you grade school aren't going to figure out who you are talking about? That they won't remember who else was in your dance group? Seriously??
Haha My mom asked me the same thing. And same answer, my attitude was, "if they do, they do. If they don't, don't ask me." 🤣 And for clarity, we weren't a "dance group." It was a group project out of many. The story of the past struggle is really what I wanted to share to connect with people. Hopefully, that is something people take away from.
That Zach was certainly no Nick.
🤔
Oh my goodness I loooooooved Heartstopper!! Thank you so much for sharing your story! ❤❤❤
@Claire Sara Who's your favorite character, Claire? And thank you so much for watching! ❤️❤️❤️
如果讓我每天只能在一個小小空間繞來繞去,我可能會瘋掉。
嗯,我也是這麼想的。希望他們是一出生就這樣,所以習慣了?但還是覺得動物們有點可憐... 😟
You are a good storyteller, a skill I am yet to master. I like hearing people's stories and how a seemingly small past event might have lasting imprint on us. I was REALLY curios about why Zack seemed disappointed after hearing your answer though :-)
Oh, it's so great to hear you say that. I was unsure how the video would come across. And I'm sure you can do it! I do find that having visuals helps a lot to complement narration. 😁 And I can't remember what I said back to Zach, but the reaction and the feeling from him. It's been more than 20 years ago. I'm surprised that I was even able to put this together. 🤣
Congrats on getting a drone and your license. I can see that you put in a lot of work in creating this video, lots of small details (that only someone who has tried to create a video would tell) 😅
Thank you, Grace! Appreciate the kind words! I'm definitely trying to get better. 1% better each time, right? 😉
Hey! But you have family ,enjoy every moment and now. 🙂 Heartstopper is an awesome series!!!👍❤️ It's all about LGBT. 它是漫畫改編的,你可以去看! Nick(bi)❤️ Charlie(gay) Tao❤️Elle(transgender) Tara❤️Darcy(lesbian)
@Jason Chou 對於Jay, 我倒是沒這麼想過!🤔🤯😭 呵呵,謝謝分享! Zach那段,怕破壞關係選擇遠離的確也是原因之一。Jason 很厲害,感覺是過來人在分享! Love it! And yes, enjoy every moment is right! Also, I did look up the comics for Heart stopper after watching the show but I didn't get it. Have you read the actual comic books, too?
your amazing
Thank you!
wow
A few things: 1. I put the "Windows" answer in the description if you are interested. Showing my age there! 😆 2. The video was filmed before the Roe v. Wade 2022 ruling so it seemed a bit ironic to hear what I said about being in a "fairly safe environment." I guess safety is a relative term anyway. 😬 3. Have you watched Heartsopper? ❤
加油!
謝謝!
