Orwell is world class on storytelling...his prose?...straight and clean...I have listened to three books now...this being the third...one book, coming up for air, I believe, was a great yarn...funny, sad...everything... This one and wigan pier tho...for 70 percent of the book...great...but the last 30 percent in both became nothing more than literary criticism of other writers... Boring...George?...I wish you would just be a storyteller

Loved listening to this audio book. When i was a kid i grew up in the 80s and early 90s watching the old war films with my dad. Sad they dont air them very often anymore, one used to be on every week. I loved the Where Eagles Dare film and read the book when i was about 12. Tried to get my teen sons to watch the films with me but because the films are 'old' they arent interested! Sad really especially when they were so brilliantly written and we actually had heros to look up to. Films now are badly written and there are no heros now.

First time listening after seeing the film several times. Must confess to being a bit puzzled? The Lancaster only has one pilot and set of controls, the right hand side has a folding chair for the Flight Engineer NOT a second pilot. Also there is no room in a Lanc for so many men to stand in a line and the exit door is not big enough to expel paratroopers from!! Mr MacLean is a gifted writer but it seems he needs help in some departments? However I shall carry on listening to and hopefully enjoying this very well narrated audiobook,

*Spoilers** At the center of this story lies the question of 'What if one does not get justice meted or in a court of law?' The case in this story was that of Daisy Armstrong's kidnapping and murder. It was based on the true life story of the Charles Lindbergh's 20- month old son's kidnap and murder. It caused an international sensation at the time because Colonel Charles Lindbergh had just become the first aviator to fly nonstop from New York, USA to Paris, France, in his single manned aircraft, The Spirit Of St. Louis. He was married to the celebrated Anne Morrow-Lindbergh. In this story Ratchett/Cassetti was narrowly released from the jury's death sentence. Some of the telling lines were when Ratchett/Cassetti's secretary, McQueen, was said to have explained how Ratchett/Cassetti used his money to get off, "it was he who explained to us exactly how Cassetti’s money had managed to get him off." Which speaks of judicial corruption. This was skirted around in various other analysis of this story, which emphasize that the twelve concerned members either committed murder, or an act of vigilantism. That overlooks that having been denied justice, the twelve seek to restore justice. They carry out the sentence that the jury gave and perform the execution themselves. "We decided then and there ... that the sentence of death that Cassetti had escaped had got to be carried out." It was an important distinction. It was important because there was a world of difference between murder, the unlawful and wrongful taking of an innocent life, and execution, the lawful taking of a criminal's life after having a court trial. Also, it was an important distinction between vigilantism and execution. Vigilantism had components of personal revenge and of taking the law into one's own hands, but an execution has neither of those components due to the trial by a jury of peers. The lack of personal revenge as well as the justice restored were important themes of this story. Best told in Mrs. Hubbard's speech at the end in which she reveals that this had happened to other children before Daisy Armstrong and would have happened to other children in the future had Ratchetti/Cassette been allowed to live. " ... there had been other children kidnapped before Daisy, and there might be others in the future. Society had condemned him - we were only carrying out the sentence." Therfore, it becomes obvious to the reader and to M. Bouc, the director of the railway line, that the twelve carried out the jury's decision in which they had recommended the death sentence. (In the 1930s, juries decided the death penalty, however, that was done away with in modern times.) In modem times the sentence is later decided by a judge. But in the case in this story, the judge later decided to rescind the jury's death sentence and to release the criminal, which indicates judicial corruption. (It could be argued in another essay, that to allow judges to provide sentencing sometime after the jury trial, may allow for this corruption to happen when 'the world' isn't watching making judicial corruption less noticeable.) However, judicial corruption was so noticeable in this story that M. Bouc decided that justice, in the form of carrying out the jury's death sentence, has been done. M. Bouc evidently agreed that the twelve had to do what was done to prevent further kidnapping and murders from being done to other children by this hardened criminal. He decided to present M.Poirot's first solution to the Yugoslavian police. In the case of Mr. Lindbergh, a carpenter who was involved in the kidnapping was executed by electric chair. However, it was evident that the carpenter had neither planned the kidnapping, nor had made the decision to murder the child. The 1974 film version veers away from the book in two significant ways; it references the mafia. Organized crime was/is believed to be behind many such kidnappings as part of their business model. Also the film had M. Poirot leaving the train car saying that he must go wrestle with his conscience, but he had no such qualms in the book. Those are the significant ways in which the movie veers from the book, another way it veered was the way in which the film version normalizes divorce by having Mrs. Hubbard refer to her two husbands and Colonel Arbuthnot referred to his impending divorce. Neither of which are in the book as divorce was rare then. In the book, Mrs Hubbard refers to "My daughter always said ... " and the Colonel had no explanation he could offer for the meaning of Miss Debenham's statement of, "Not now. Not now. When is all over. When it's behind us - then-" Although that, perhaps, was just for better theater.

Forty minutes later, in the semi-darkness of the overcast evening and in torrential rain, lance-straight and strangely chill, the anchor of the caique rattled down between the green walls of the forest, a dank and dripping forest, hostile in its silent indifference."

Chopped of end of chapter 4: "the sharp edge of the rock bit cruelly into the calves of his legs, the tight rope constricted his breathing and he was still ashen-faced and exhausted from long hours of labour and seasickness: but when he spoke, it was with a voice of utter sincerity. ‘My Gawd!’ he said reverently. ‘Ain’t this wonderful!’" Chapter 5 begins at 2:48:33

Chopped off end of chapter 5: "He himself made no sound, none at all: the soundless scream of agony never passed his lips, for the blackness came with the pain: but the straining ears of the men crouching in the rocks above caught clearly the dull, sickening crack as his right leg fractured cleanly in two, snapping like a rotten bough." Last sentence of chapter 6 including chopped -off bit at the end: "And then the four men, even the tireless Andrea, slumped down to the sodden, snow-chilled floor of the cave and slept like men already dead, oblivious alike of the rocks on the floor, the cold, their hunger and their clammy, saturated clothing, oblivious even to the agony of returning circulation in their frozen hands and faces." Chapter 7 starts at 4:13:37

Hmm... Another bit of sentence missing at around 4:14:20 "And then he had flitted noiselessly out of the mouth of the tunnel and reached far up the bank of the gully in half a dozen steps; stretched full length against the snow, he eased himself smoothly up the slope, lifted a cautious eye over the top."
