Nice!
I'm a complete novice when it comes to carpentry, but I thought the end result was great. Congratulations, beautiful bass guitar. The dubbing also helped me pay more attention to the video.
You're supposed to sand it after the finishing :)
Thrash band Metallica 1982-89 era Orion
I love that they’ve been playing Orion live
u cant build James guitar cuz it ain't his and by the way your voice sounds a little like Niki six so there. 😊
You could make tutorial videos of guitar building. That thing is great!
Thank you! Once I have a bit more experience I can do some more specifics.
now do a neck thru! subbed for you, #13,500.
Thinking of a neck through V
Burial Beer!!!!!! Blackened.
Good pickup 🤘🏻
Amazing job. That was very therapeutic watching that. Now im going to be watching guitar build videos for the next few weeks.
Thank you - glad you liked it! I just posted a bass build the other day if you’re on a guitar build kick!
Great build, lots of great tips too. Something I started doing when putting a top on a body, was to use locator pins or small screws in places that wouldn't be seen, like the neck pocket, bridge area or pickup cavities, you can get it spot on before glueing and don't need to worry about the centre lines not lining up.
That’s a great tip, thanks for sharing!
I'm not only an "audiophile', but also a woodworker. Building a guitar or bass has been a dream of mine for many years. I've had the thought of walking into my local musician shop and asking if there's anyone that wants a custom guitar/bass built for them. It's a bucket list thing, even thought I don't have an official bucket list. Great video. Thank you VERY much for the inspiration.
Thanks for watching, and glad I could provide some inspiration. You should do it - it’s a lot of fun and super rewarding!
Yeah! Go for it!!!
Nice build
Thanks!
Nice work !!
Thank you! Cheers!
Awesome build my friend...fyi James guitarrs were ESP explorer models not Gibson
Thank you. Actually the first explorer he bought was a Gibson (he bought it on the road since all he had at the time was the Electra V). He has long since had a relationship with ESP through.
@garagedwellersww yea your right!..the "more beer" explorer ..
Great work dude
Thanks!
Great job man! I love the way the colors came out.
Thank you! I was pretty happy with the way the stain turned out.
What is that string retainer on the A string???
Since it’s a flat headstock it’s supposed to help that string get the proper angle down from the nut.
@@garagedwellersww Where did you get it?
Great build, if you do another that has a cap, route your wire channels before gluing the cap on. Eliminates trying to drill them later.
I will definitely do that next time, it’s a great tip!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!
Great build! I prefer a 35" scale for a 5 string though. Love the finish on that..
Thank you, I was really happy with it! Agreed on the scale, if I had to do it again I'd go 35. I think it would give that B string better tension.
harvester of sorrow
Great song choice
If you want to learn more about staining. Check out bigdguitars.
cutting the rough neck profile on the band saw after gluing on the fretboard is definitely a choice 😂 but hey, it came out beautiful.
Yeah, that was the result of poor planning 😬😂. Thanks for watching!
soo good
Thank you!
Solid work! Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
Was so much fun to watch all Processes.. This Bass Guitar is so beuatiful and the Wood Finishes are awesome. And the Sound is also great. You are doing very well. MERRY CHRISTMAS 🧑🎄
Thanks so much!
Awesome build! How do you attach your templates, so they can be removed afterwards?
Thank you! I use double sided tape, either 3M or Shaper Origin brand. If you’re looking for some I believe I have some in our Amazon storefront!
Hi, bass guitar tech here. Love your build, great work! For fret polishing, you're on the right track with sanding grits. Finish with #0000 super fine steel wool. I stopped using Dremel + metal polish because the heat can cause frets to pop out. Now, I just use a dry cloth for buffing. If you use a Dremel, be careful with the heat.
Great tip! I'll be sure to try that! And I didn’t even think about the heat a Dremel could cause.
hey so I've read quite some stories on the neck construction. Regarding whether to first rough shape the neck, before gluing a fretboard on, because of tensions which may release in the wood when removing material. So what I see here is the opposite, you have excess material and a ready to go fingerboard glued on. I get that it may be easier working with a straight neck, but having to remove like 1/4 of an inch with the bandsaw after glueing on a fretboard seems to me a bit unessary risk to get a crooked neck? (even crooked in a direction which can not be remedied by the trussrod)
That’s a great point, and I’ve heard it both ways. I use all kiln dried lumber that has acclimated to my shop, and try to go with pretty stable cuts of wood (rift or quartersawn) for the neck. Both that I’ve done have needed truss rod adjustment after but nothing else major.
Love this video!!!!
Thank you!
Adjust the nut, not the slot. Cut a good flat level slot and then adjust the nut to match it. Will go much quicker. Nice build!
Thank you - great tip! Not sure why I didn’t think of that.
Great sounding bass. Quick tip: You can use a noise gate to get some of the unintentional notes out of your recording. Rock on bro
Good thought. I have a noise gate for my regular setup because I run high distortion, but didn’t think about it for this purpose. Thanks for watching and commenting!
22:31 I have a mega playlist of songs but my favorite song is “If Darkness Had A Son”
The new album is really good!
Love your work sir. Your videos are very thorough. Looking forward to future videos. Question, what was the product that you used inside the control cavity?
Thank you for the kind words! Do you mean the black paint, or the electronics in the control cavity?
Great build. Love the way that stain worked into the grains (front and back). Also, that neck looks very nice as well.
Thank you, I was very happy with how the stain turned out!
I would recommend getting a fret beveling file. It makes beveling fret end super fast and easy and beveled fret make playing more comfortable.
Yes, I put a slight bevel on with the flat file, but those bevel files look quicker/easier/more accurate. Thanks for the tip!
My fretwork has gotten really good and consistent, I have a small block with a groove that fits the frets (after planing to flat). I start with 400, 600, 800 1000, 1200, 1500,2000, 2500 and then polish. I count the repeats starting with 15 to 20 reps and gradually go down. The counting gives a very precise result because the hands are so sensitive. It may seem like overkill, but, the results are consistently great!!
That sounds like a great process - appreciate the tips!
I've built 7 basses and only one turned out playable. It's a journey of discovery
Yes, guitar building seems to be a constant journey for sure!
23:30 Consider zero-fret :P (I love them, so many avantages) Awesome job ! You nailed it ! What about balance? no head diving ?
Going to have to look more into the zero fret - sounds interesting. No neck dive, has a nice balance to it. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Looks incredible!
Thank you, I'm pretty stoked about it!
@ hell yeah, you planning on doing any more bass builds? As a 4 string player myself I’d love to see you make one at some point!
Definitely. My brother wants a 4 string, so I’ll be doing one down the road.
One tip to help your sanity 😁 If you make an instrument with a top from different wood, I would recommend to route channels under top wood for all pickup wires. No need to use a long drill bit and worry about drilling through top or bottom.
One of those things where I say to myself, why didn’t I think to do that? 😂. Thank you, that will save my sanity!
This was your first build? Very well done sir
Thank you!
Favourite metallica song bleeding me!
🤘🏻
Guitar shouldn't have a scarf joint
Well that’s unfortunate, because it does, and I can’t really undo that 😬
You’re definitely right: you don’t need a lot of tools. I have recently built my first guitar (I’ve also went for an angled neck/ angled headstock design, the easiest stuff, right 😅), I don’t have a bandsaw, I used a little oscillating cutter and a spindle sander for the body and a good old fashioned hand saw to do the angled headstock. I also decided to put an Apex headstock reinforcements (as seen on Gibson Access). Probably the best tool is the spindle sander, helped me throughout the whole build. Gotta love building guitars (I’ve got a 5-string PJ bass coming up as well, but this time my own design). Much love from Italy
That's awesome! I agree, if I had to only pick one tool to keep it would probably be the spindle sander or the drill press, although I'm pretty good with a hand drill. Good luck with your bass build!
Favorite Metallica song is Disposable Heroes
Such a great track 🤘🏻
This is sick!
Thank you so much!
Clip the fret ends over the trash can. Those itsy fret bits can hide on your bench..
Good call - I definitely found a few on the floor.
Please send it over to me. Thank you
This one’s all mine!
