Bahe Rediscover VS Lems Outlander Toe to Toe/Best Barefoot Hiking Boot/Best Minimal Hiking Boot
Today we bring you a battle between what have become our favorite "barefoot" or minimal hiking boots. The Outlander from Lems has long been on top for us, but when the Bahe Rediscover came along we couldn't deny how much we enjoyed it on our feet and how often we keep coming back to it. Today we'll discuss various aspects of the boots and see if the Bahe has what it takes to truly dethrone the Outlander as our favorite hiking boot, time stamps and affiliate links below.

    No need to diss so hard on Vivo. For me, even after a while in barefoot shoes, my feet are still narrow, low volume, and slope shaped, and Vivo are the only minimalist shoe company making any kind of legit hiking boot for someone with feet like mine. I really hate it when people with ultra-wide feet make it seem like an ultra-wide shoe is the only thing that counts as minimalist/barefoot or that a cheaper shoe is obviously the better option. Do I wish Vivos were cheaper or that I had more options? Sure. But y'all need to remember everyone has different shaped feet, even minimalist shoe wearers. At least this review helped me figure out the ATs aren't going to work for me - they'll be way too wide!

They do run small as all lems seem to. Half size up for all lems unless they have a narrow toebox like the mesa then its a full size up. My only real gripe with lems is their laces. Always too short. I recently purchased a pair of BeLenka Ranger 2.0. They are great (as advertised), BUT try as I did - choosing the most fitting size, they turned out to be at least half a size too small / short, AND not really suited for true winter conditions in the mountain (deep snow) terrain, and below zero (Celsius) temperatures. They have hardly any insulation and feel cold, even in the city) - I live in the relatively warmer, South West part of Canada. The reviews I watched, led me to believe that they would stand up well under such conditions ... or was it me - hoping - because they sounded so great overall ...? Will attempt to sell them (as slightly used , at a loss, of course. Do you (anyone) have a solid (based on personal experience) minimal winter boots recommendation ...? I'm now (carefully) considering Rediscover boots (by Bahe): quite (most?) expensive, which I don't question, IF the promoted high quality and performance is there. However, I want to make sure that I get what will be completely suitable, in terms of use: winter and early springtime mountain hiking (and accommodate crampons and snowshoes).

    • @sonsofsever
      @sonsofsever 4 дня назад

      The Rediscover won't be any warmer than the Ranger 2.0. We definitely don't get the same cold as Canada here in Utah! If you wanted to try another Be Lenka they have the "Winter" or the "York" boots which are more insulated than the Ranger 2.0. Also the Feelgrounds Patrol Winter is the most insulated minimal boot we've tried, definitely suited for those cold temps, but they're not really a hiking boot, the traction is decent but not really suited or advertised for much hiking.

      @@sonsofsever Thank you very much for responding. I appreciate your suggestions. This this challenge, isn't it: there aren't any (?) hi performance, hiking boots built for serious winter conditions.Hopefully it's just a matter of time before one of the 'barefoot' shoe makers fills that gap. So I know running is quite personal in terms of what to wear for shoes, based on so many things obviously, (sidenote, this video just really make me want to run ahaha, so thanks? Really cool video to have for a bit of a review! You all did great!) but as someone who has walked in barefoot shoes for a little over a decade, but has never done any running, is there a range of thickness you might recommend as a starting point? I took a look at the stack height for the Runners and I gotta say, it has me worried for my ankles, but I know I need more padding than any of my current barefoot shoes! For reference, during general exercise, I wear my xero 360s, but those would absolutely not be enough padding for running at all. Thickest walking shoe I own is actually probably the Splay 101s.

      @sonsofsever 9 дней назад

      @@MsSilentH we just reviewed the Altra Escalante 4, I'd start there! It has 24mm of stack height, lots of cushion, it's a great running shoe if you're looking for a lot of comfort. I would think that for someone like you who's been wearing barefoot shoes for so long anything more under your foot would be complete overkill. When we first got it it felt like too much cushioning, but we've really appreciated it as time has gone on and especially as we've used it on longer runs. My only caution with getting the Splay is that even though it has 18mm of stack height, it isn't really cushioned, the midsole is pretty hard, and I think if you're gonna start running the Escalante will give you a better experience.

      @@sonsofsever Many thanks! Yea that was my big worry, too much height, but I feel like I'd definitely still appreciate cushioning, so good to know about the Splays as well, not something I would have figured with the 18mm!

    I wish there was an option that wasn't plastic. That doesn't mean it has to be leather, just not plastic.

    hello, would you say that the boulder summit waterproof boot would be good for a job? I work at in n out and have been wanting to switch to a zero drop wide toe box work boot because there are days when I am bending over a grill for six hours straight and my back is hurting by the end of the day. the requirements are that they have to be non-slip. are these non slip? also do you think these could hold up to the job, because my work boots go through a lot; hot melting cheese drips on them, spread, i step on a lot of food, they are constantly getting wet if i work a closing shift and have to wash the dishes by hand. please let me know what you think or what would you think would be a good barefoot work shoe out of your reviews

      @@skippersam2760 I think the Kourt Grip might suit you better. I think the grip outsole is more suited to working in a restaurant environment than the Summit outsole. The Kourt is still full grain leather, still zero drop, I bet the toe box feels a little wider too because there's no waterproof membrane, and it's much more in line with the sneakers I see employees at in n out wearing. If you're really looking for a boot though, the Summit isn't a terrible option at all, I think it would work.

    Have used Altra Escalante for years, for running and work as hairdresser, helped me treat/cure Morton's Neuroma. They're my main shoe. Don't want to be without them. But absolutely agree with your suggestions for an alternate model Escalante.

    How is the thermal insulation of the patrol lite? Is it good enough for below or around freezing temperatures? Or would you recommend the patrol winter for those situations? I am hesitating because you mentioned the patrol winter are problematic when you want to keep them on inside at home or in shops.

    • @sonsofsever
      @sonsofsever 10 дней назад

      @@williamwallace410 I think with the right socks you would be fine at those temperatures. They definitely aren’t “insulated” in any way though

    They seal the seams on the Winter, so I don't get why they don't do it for the Lite. I don't think it even needs a membrane. The material is already water repellent, so if they just seal the seams it should be mostly waterproof. As for the fake leather, it kinda ruins all the Patrols. Imagine if they made them in Nubuck. They'd literally be barefoot Timberlands. I get that it's a vegan company, but they could still use recycled leather that would go to waste otherwise. Freet does it, they can too. The boots are already as expensive as real leather, so it would only be fair that we get non plastic versions too. I'm sure some hardcore Vegans would be offended even by recycled leather, but that's nothing compared to the new audience they will attract. Most people don't wanna pay top dollar for plastic. Also I agree they could make a version with bigger lugs, to get more of that Timberland look. The sole can remain flexible even with bigger lugs, as we've seen from Vivo ESC models. They seem to be paying attention to your feedback, so fingers crossed. Btw I wish you had tested the waterproofing a bit more and showed us, so we could get an idea of what they can and can't do.

      I bet they'd keep water out even if submerged for an ok amount of time, with no gusset you just wouldn't be able to go very deep. The day I was out filming was really wet, and my feet stayed dry going through puddles, through tall wet grass, and walking on the soggy lake shore, so they have been decently water resistant

    • @CptAngelKGaming
      @CptAngelKGaming 10 дней назад

      @@sonsofsever Oh I didn't realize they don't even have a gusset. WHY?! I bet with a gusset and seamed seals they'll be really waterproof.

    I was actually wearing my grey patrol lites last night. My only complaint is that I find myself not wearing them as often because it's hard to get in and out of them because of the laces/eyelids holes. I've heard from another youtuber that the patrol winter is easier because all the eyelid holes have metal caps, whereas the lites they took almost all of them out. I actually don't notice mine making that squeaky sound like your's. Maybe as a new pair they did?

    Thanks for the review. I am looking to transition from Altra to Lems. Looks like Primal Zen has the highest stack height? That’s what I need for an easy transition. I have Morton’s neuroma / foot pain. I am hoping the Lems will be a good shoe. Altra - while I need the cushioning for sure - seems to be a little bit too much for me. I feel a little wobbly.

      @@Audrey.17 I think Lems is the perfect step down from Altra. The Primal Zen doesn't have the highest stack height no, some shoes like the Chillum Grip have a little more, but the Zen would still be great option for you in our opinion, it's very comfortable
