    You have a gem there. I had to correct a former British co-worker on Capt. Bligh thanks to Hollywood's demonization of him. He was no tyrant. The irony was that he was TOO LENIENT to his crew, he pampered them too much and when you're in Tahiti in command of sailors worshipped as gods by sex-starved Tahitian beautifies for a year as they set about distilling alcohol, that's a dangerous game. The definitive account of what happened is Caroline Alexander's awesome THE BOUNTY, which opens with HMS Pandora arriving in Tahiti seeking justice and arresting 14 mutineers who had taken wives and had children with the natives. As to the main mutineers, for anyone thinking these criminals were angels, they loaded up on women and stills with some native men as slaves, found an uncharted island, burned the Bounty, then set about killing each other drunkenly in fights over the women until there was just one man left. The descendants of this man and those women inhabit this island (Pitcairn Island) to this day. Bligh had no marines (fighting sailors) like the Pandora did to watch his back. Nearly half the crew elected to join Bligh after the mutiny and they were placed with him in a 23-foot launch and set adrift to certain death. With just a quadrant and a compass (but no charts or marine chronometer) Bligh navigated the small boat 4000 miles to a Dutch outpost - a nautical feat unequaled to this day.

      Thanks a lot for commenting. Yes, much more of this episode is also documented in some other rare editions from Golden Cockerel Press. They published the full log of the Bounty and also an account of the voyage of the launch. I hope to add them to my collection one day.

    Thanks you've made me a fan of this press, they're as old school as it gets, a real printers' printing house. As an American, I was first introduced to Punch and Judy though via this talk by the late Jonathan Bowden: ruclips.net/video/1tN_p4CB54A/видео.html If you find it entertaining move on to his talks on H.P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, the Lovecraft one especially. He also did talks on Wyndham Lewis, George Orwell,, Stewart Home, and Bill Hopkins & the Angry Young Men - all top notch presentations, he was a great orator.

    Edwin Smith is one of my favorite photographers. He is quite out of vogue now, seeking as he did to preserve views of Old English countryside, churches, interiors, landscapes, etc. I had never heard of him until I purchased a 24x19 print of his Gates of Hardwick Hall 30 years ago, and it has given me tremendous pleasure ever since. I'm an amateur photographer and love black and white. The way the delicate filigree of the cast iron fence meshes with the surrounding forest with the light shining through from the back has always provided me a sense of peace and an appreciation for the deep beauty of the scene. I've since collected some of his books and have gained an even deeper appreciation for his gifts. Strangely enough, he considered his photography far less important than his painting.

      @UbiquitousBooks 11 дней назад

      Thanks for commenting. I must confess that I hadn't come across his work before reading this book, which remains my only sample of his output. But I, too, dabble in amateur photography and probably would enjoy looking at some of his other stuff. I'll try to keep it top of mind.

    Yeah the book is nice, the leather and the binding surely make this book unique but the asking price is just crazy when you consider you can also have really nice unique books (with top quality paper, top notch binding, etc...) from other nice presses for a fraction of the price... It's just not worth it imho. Thank you for the review though :), it's always nice to see beautiful books!

      Thanks for commenting. I also have other things I would do with $14k. But that is a matter of personal taste and priorities. The Roman Numeral edition is out of print so there must be ten people out there somewhere who thought it was worth more to them than anything else they could buy with the money. I'm genuinely happy for them.

    • @UbiquitousBooks
      @UbiquitousBooks 3 месяца назад

      Thanks very much. Many modern fine editions have a kind of fake headband that is simply glued onto the spine. These "real" ones that are actually sewn into the binding look quite different and are easy to spot. I read about the leather on their website, but in principle this can also be judged by looking at the grain.

    There are several different subsets of fine & private press book collectors, which include: Incunabula, illuminated manuscripts, Books of Hours, antiquarian private press, modern (1890-present) private press, 1st editions, and fine bindings ( to name a few), and each one appeals to a very different type of book collector. Very often, there is little overlap between the various editions and/or collectors themselves. This Roman Numeral edition from Suntup Press encompasses both modern private press and fine binding. Clearly however, the appeal of this edition is for fine binding collectors and it is a modern masterwork from the Sangorski & Sutcliffe division of Shepherds Ltd. (London). Note that the top 3 states of this Suntup publication were extremely pricey: Numbered (350 copies): $950, Lettered (26 copies): $5,500, and the Roman Numeral edition (10 copies): $14,500. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this edition is that ALL of the four states completely sold out in a matter of several years. Personally, I would opt for a fine copy of the Cranach Press 'The Tragedie of Hamlet' in the rare full morocco binding by Otto Dörfner for the same price as this Roman Numeral edition but it is clearly an example of "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

    This lettered state of Conversation Tree Press' Peter Pan is absolutely of a piece with Lyra's Books' lettered Stardust and Folio Society's limited editions of Wind in the Willows and Alice in Wonderland, which are all to my mind the high water marks of fine press publishing of the last 30 years. All of these books wed understated early twentieth century extravagance with tasteful restraint: the finest materials; the finest illustrations; the finest bindings; all in service to a unified artistic vision. Charles Vess and Charles van Sandwyk are both to be congratulated for their roles in making these 4 books what they are, as are Rich Tong of Lyra's, Tony Geer of CTP, and whoever organised those two books at FS.

      Thanks for commenting. I think we should reserve judgement on this particular art unless and until specific evidence emerges. But I saw the MTG stuff and it indeed looks problematic. In any case, this puts Folio Society in a potentially difficult position with one 007 book still to release and the whole series illustrated by, it would seem, a likely plagiarist.

    I wonder, is there a reason (except for the aesthetic one) for such wide side and bottom fields? It seems a little more convenient to handle the book, to keep it and to turn pages without covering the content of the book with your hands, but seeing such big areas of empty paper in books is not of what I got used to. It is almost as if it is a small book in a bigger cover. Is it some kind of traditional format of books printing from old times?

    Moral of the story: "You get what you pay for". Incidentally, an interesting factoid - at first blush, Peter Pan may have appeared to be an unusual choice to become the first publication of a new private press publisher. However, IIRC, when Tony Geer approached Charles Vess with regard to becoming the illustrator for his first publication (undecided at that time), Vess indicated that he had always wanted to illustrate Peter Pan, so much so that he convinced Tony Geer to make this his first publication. Vess has responded with an extraordinary collection of watercolours and B & W drawings, both in quality and quantity, so much so that it can certainly be considered a livre d'artiste edition. Rarely will one find a modern private press book as generously illustrated by an artist of Charles Vess's stature as in this edition, especially using letterpress printing for the B & W drawings.

      Thanks for the factoid, I didn't know about this. But it makes sense because the book indeed seems to have been illustrated generously and with passion.

    Can I do this on Paperbacks?

    • @UbiquitousBooks
      @UbiquitousBooks 5 месяцев назад

      Absolutely you can. It is also possible to buy dedicated book protectors to fit standard sized paperbacks. Those protectors are a bit more heavy-duty and offer better protection for the edges of the book, but will be a bit more expensive.

    Found your channel through the mylar tutorial, your voice is quite pleasant to hear :) Is there a video on your background or how you started your collection? cheers

      Thanks very much! I don't have a video on my collecting journey. Briefly, I started out buying Folio Society because I just wanted "one or two" nice books. From the Folio Society forum at LibraryThing I learned of The Limited Editions Club, and once I started buying those I was led down a rabbit hole of fine press and private press publishing. I am thinking about some future videos that might include some tips for people getting started with collecting, in case it's of any interest. Thanks again for the kind comment.

    Not too keen on the white edge on the standard edition, but I like how the color illustrations look in the standard edition-look better than the de-lux edition.

      Interesting, I was kind of the opposite: not too bothered by the plain page edges but I prefer the plates to be mounted to a nicer paper. There's no accounting for taste!

    having the map bound in as a trifold , will also permit one to have the map open whilst reading the story, so you will not have to go back and forth if you try to follow the route

    This is another fine review in your series and you have certainly touched upon all of the salient points. The Conversation Tree Press (CTP) is one of but a handful of modern private presses that has hit a home run (or scored a goal for European readers) with a superb debut publication. The quality of materials used throughout and the quality of letterpress printing from Pat Randle at his Nomad Letterpress are top-notch, hardly surprising since Pat is the son of John and Rose Randle of the Whittington Press, one of the 20th century's finest private presses. Note that the deluxe edition deliberately has a classic appearance because it was intended as an homage to the great signed limited edition illustrated books of the early 20th century from the likes of Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Willy Pogany, Kay Nielsen, etc. Although you briefly touched upon it at the end, what REALLY sets the CTP apart is the taste level and genius for book design that proprietor Tony Geer apparently has, from choice of materials to choice of illustrators. Although Peter Pan may not be everyone's cup of tea, the illustrations from Charles Vess are both numerous and appropriate, well worth the price of admission. One final note - aside from Peter Pan and Joe Hill's 'Faun', CTP has announced and is already working on an edition of an early sci-fi classic - Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. This is described in detail on the CTP website and the book designs are stunning, so much so that the full goatskin Deluxe edition went OOP in a matter of weeks. Again, the 8 impressionistic oil painting illustrations and 5 line drawings (which are printed letterpress!) by Jacob Dhein are perfect, greatly enhancing one's read of this novel. The remaining standard edition is similarly priced at $275 representing excellent value. Whilst you may not want to buy an expensive edition of Peter Pan, Flowers for Algernon should have widespread appeal.

    Does the covenant of champions respawn every enemy or just in the areas you visit?

    • @Michaelog74
      @Michaelog74 2 месяца назад

      I know you've probably found the answer already. But every standard mob will respawn infinitely, even if you've previously despawned them via hitting their kill limit.
