Howells: Now abideth faith, hope and charity
Now abideth faith, hope and charity
by Herbert Howells
performed by the Bienen Contemporary/Early Vocal Ensemble
of the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music
Donald Nally, conductor
Scott Dettra, organist
Now abideth faith, hope, charity: these three. But the greatest of these is charity. Charity suffereth long, and is kind and envieth not. Charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own. Is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil, but rejoiceth in the truth, beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God, and everyone that loveth is born of God, an...

One of the most magnificent things I've heard in recent times!
Magnificent -thank- you!
The best.
Bravos. Rafael Brazil
Heard this in Chicago the other evening. Music of the Baroque performed it. What a lovely piece of music. So different--peaceful and powerful.
We performed it on 12/10/23 with the Toronto Classical Singers. I wasn't sure I loved it when we started rehearsing; it grew on most of us. Apparently, it sounded great! Thanks to our fearless Artistic Director, Jürgen Petrenko, for performing this unusual work with us, a community choir.
We just performed this work on Saturday 12/2/23 at Kent State University with a chamber string quartet instead of a full orchestra. I absolutely loved singing this (Alto I, although Soprano IIs sang our part and we sang the low alto line). It’s a shame this work isn’t programmed more often during the holiday season. Perhaps it’s because of its slightly melancholy nature, and people want to hear cheerful carols and familiar works like “Messiah” that everyone knows by heart. Still, I’m glad I talked our conductor into programming this work. It was worth every bit of it. Glorious and beautiful! 🎹🎼🎶🎵
Cherwell Choral Society are performing this beautiful work and other Christmas music carols etc., on Saturday 16th December, at St Mary's Church Bloxham Oxfordshire......see you there!😊
😭😭🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
This is absolutely incredible. And sad.
Wonderful music well performed!
A pita the choir is not heard as clear as the orchestreer….
2:40 wow
what idiot thinks that a loud ad for rock guitar tuition in the middle of this lovely choral work will elicit something other than total disdain?
A beautiful and moving performance of a timeless classic. Thank you.
So great performance!!! Congratulations!!!
Precioso!
🎁🥇🏆🎯 Txt Incredible. And music matches it. Glasses/Bells excellent.
This interesting performance has gotten 837 views in 9 years. That tells you something about the popularity of fine contemporary music. Currier is an important composer and both he and I reside in the dark shadows of music history. Oh, well......
Anyone has the lyrics to this beautiful song?
Beautiful
When I first heard Finzi I understood without questioning. A totally unique style that is both interesting, delicate and passionate. Wonderful. If you want hear violin and piano interpretations of his wonderful pieces we are working through many of his smaller works like this....ruclips.net/video/N1uU2FJarvM/видео.html
Performed this with a choir at church, was sublime
I found this after reading an article in "Space" about sounds the Northern Lights make that are occasionally audible to the human ear. I absolutely love this mystical performance. The wine glasses and tone bells add a quality that pulls everything together with the tenor and puts one in the far north observing and hearing the rare sounds of the Aurora Borealis. Thank you.
Same here.
So mesmerizing, so beautiful. Everyone has an open mouth as if they are nests and birds will fly out of them. They are so close to nature.

Eight cellos! Four cellos for each of the two cello parts. What a rich orchestral sound! The singing is absolutely beautiful.
Gorgeous
The more I listen the more I delve into the magical realm where this song is
Soooo schön ❤
Christianity is a most pernicious religion.
I just love this piece. It has brought me though many dark times in my life.
Gorgeous piece - I heard on Christmas Eve at a church in Dallas.....and just began to cry at the beauty of the sound, the birth of our Lord, and all of the loss from this 2020 covid year - peace on earth and hope for a better year - My Lord Has Come.
Thank you, NU Choirs . . .
I have been singing carols for 60 years and this year is the first time I have been unable to do so. I came across this hymn for the first time last night sang by the Abbey Choir, Shrewsbury. ( the carol service may be on RUclips ) and was deeply affected by it . Let's hope we will be able to have carol services again in 2021
Just unable to hear the soloist or the words from the choir. Sound check please!
I have been looking for this song forever! We sang it in concert choral in 1979 at Harris Stowe Teacher's College in St. Louis, Mo. Doris Wilson was the Conductor. I simply love it!
A beautiful carol, beautifully sung. Thank you.
Magnifique magnifique !
MARAVILLOSO
my favorite choral piece of all time
The choir was behind the first 1 minute. Bless their hearts!
Excellent pronunciation!
An intensity, warmth, sincerity and accuracy that moves deeply.
Just heard this in church and it was so chilling I had to just stop there and listen in awe
Well done
Beautiful music, beautifully performed.
Danke für diese zauberhafte Aufführung, verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich. Give peace a chance. Freundliche Gedanken, thank you, merci, obrigada
