    A lot of work ahead. Is adoring one or two kittens as garage cats maybe? Cats on the yard are so nice for keeping rodents under control. Have them fixed and give them a comfy winter corner.

    Coleus starts really well in a small jar of water and they do well inside over winter. I take cuttings in autumn and put them all in a pot after they root in water and separate out into containers in spring.

      That is good to know, I have not tried overwintering mezoo before! Maybe I'll get some clearance ones and pot them up as houseplants to make it easier to move them in. I see them for about a dollar on clearance now. "Free" plants for next spring! 😊

    Absolutely love your plants and color harmonizing! What type of potting soil do you use? Also what do you use for fertilizer? Thanks in advance.

    • @laurelrosegardens6454
      @laurelrosegardens6454 8 дней назад

      Thank you! I use many types of soil and save it and re-use it from year to year. I have used Pro-Mix, Kellogg Organics, Proven Winners, Coast of Maine, and soils bagged and sold by local garden centers. It is worth the investment in quality soil, and I have found Pro-Mix to be the best value for the money. If any plants have insect or disease issues I dispose of that soil and do not save it. For fertilizer I can usually find large bags of Espoma Garden Tone or Plant Tone for a good price in spring. Plus I add worm castings at planting time. I fertilize weekly with water-soluble bloom or all-purpose mix. Currently I use Fertilome but I also purchase mixes packaged and sold at local garden centers. I fertilize with that once per week. 😊

    • @laurelrosegardens6454
      @laurelrosegardens6454 11 дней назад

      Thank you! I have tried many times to overwinter caladiums but they almost always rot. I think I had one single corm survive last year. I dig them up, let them dry on a tray and then put them in paper lunch bags in the basement over winter but that method has not been successful for me. Perhaps you would need to store them in a medium that will keep them very dry in storage. Otherwise, I highly recommend Florida Boys Calladiums if you want to order new corms. Theirs are very good size and quality!

I move things around a lot during the season and I would have to have another line running from the spigot on the house across the concrete so I'm not motivated to figure that out. I just keep hand-watering though this year has been easier with the abundance of rain.

They dropped a lot of leaves but as soon as it got into the 50's on the porch I put them out there and they filled in nicely with the sun exposure. I haven't tried keeping them as bare root but I might give that a shot this year.

    Hello, your garden is beautiful ! I really like the fact you know all your plants and varieties, it's helpful when I see a plant that inspires me to look it up :) I'm amazed by your hellebore, it's huge ! Also your elephant ears, doing so well in zone 5 ! How big are their pots please ? I'm in zone 9, I keep them in pots that look smaller and I don't get so big leaves...perhaps you feed them with something special too ?

    • @laurelrosegardens6454
      @laurelrosegardens6454 13 дней назад

      Thank you! I don't know the exact measurements of the pots but they are pretty big. All 3 probably at least 20 inches or more. One is terracotta, one is glazed ceramic, and the other is plastic. The terracotta and ceramic are easier to keep watered. The bulbs are a few years old now so maybe that helps with size. I dig them out and store in the basement in a cardboard box over winter. We've also had lots of rain this year so that has helped too.

    • @laurelrosegardens6454

      Nice! My old apartment was in Edina! Love that area! I use the pots to guard the top of the stakes so I don't accidentally poke my eye out when I lean over to reach the plants. I've had some close calls! I think they are also used as an insect trap. You can fill them with straw and they are supposed to attract earwigs who like to hide in there, then you can dump the earwigs into soapy water to kill them. I don't use mine as traps so I can't speak to the effectiveness. 😊
