Let’s say I want to fly fish for pike… but I only have an 8 weight rod. Can I still do it?

Not new to fly fishing but new to pike and musky. My question is about leader setup. I’ve always made my own but not sure about this application. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. A combo for Lake St. Clair fishing about 10’ Any suggestions? Thanks 🎣🎣🎣

Which knot do you use for the loop in the bite guard?

Love this set up. It’s my new “go to” however I do have a question. Now that all my flies have 8” of bite guard on them, how do I store them? What do you use for fly box? I’m guessing if I have them in there current box the leader will become bent with memory. Might be a pain to try and straighten out while fishing. Curious to see your set up on storage. Thanks!

Do you cut of the front taper of the Depthfinder lines ? I'm assuming that as they comes in 30' heads and you say you around 24'. I personally like short heavy head 20-25' I never fish the depthfinder. I have use shooting head and mono shootingline started whit that in the 80s the only bad part is the junction! In the old Cortland whit lead tread you could push in the mono in the core and come out the side and do a looking nut and wind of whit tread and glue. But as the new standards come to play this is not working any more. We don't have Musky here in Scandinavia but big pike we do have. And they take on big flies some days! So that 10/11# is ideal here. Most people go for 9/10# rods and lines. Intermediate is popular here but I basically never fish pike whit those. Sink 3" and sink 9" cover it as I'm see it. Hi nice 😁 That's the only knot that works perfectly! What you use for Tarpon as well. Nail knot but I use way more then 50lbs specially nearest the flyline! I go 80lbs but I my down size to 40lbs at the tip if needed for those days fish is grabby and not bite at all. For big flies I go 3' of 80lbs mono and a 1' wire that's how I do it. No jaw spreaders . They are barbaric things that should NEVER be used . If you chin hold a Pike , it will open it's mouth anyway . If you care about fish care , do NOT use a gag or jaw opener/spreader .

Interesting leader setup that I’m going to try. Question though; I feel like the swivel would cause the leader system to hinge during the casting stroke. Does this not happen or do you have to alter your cast somewhat from a regular leader system to prevent it from hinging?

Hey Pogo, do you see any issue running ~3 ft 30lb salt hard mono to a barrel swivel with bite guard with a lock snap on the end?
