Seth and Summer: They're both competitive. They constantly try to out-do each other. Take their engagement for example. Neither of them are ready for it but they don't want to call it off, so they come up with a game to try to get the other one to chicken out. They're both self-centered. Seth lies or omits pieces of the truth to avoid dealing with it. It's also a way to avoid dealing with the consequences of his actions. Summer (in season 1) seems obsessed with her public image, even going as far as ignoring Seth after they start dating because dating a nerd would jeopardize her image. In season 2, she leaves the decision of prom up to Zach and Seth so she isn't forced into making a choice. But after season 2, they become surprisingly stable. They still have their fair share of problems, but nothing I felt they couldn't get through. Seth was a person who primarily thought about himself. He left Newport on a boat without a word of goodbye to Summer or a thought about the abandonment she felt. He lied to both her and Anna about his feelings for them, breaking both of their hearts. But in season 3 and 4, Seth has changed. He lies to Summer about getting into Brown initially because he's embarrassed she got in and he didn't, but soon it evolves into a lie because she refuses to go without him and he can't let her do that. He tells Summer to take the job at GEORGE because it's good for her. It's something she needs to do. He encourages her because he loves her that much, even though that means they'll be apart for a while. The Summer of season 1 is an unbearably shallow person, destined to grow up to be yet another Julie Cooper or Veronica Townsend. Thanks to Seth's influence on her, Summer evolves into someone infinitely deeper than the plastics she would've become. So much so that she can't stand her "noopsie" friend Holly or the crowd she used to feel so comfortable in. She ends up becoming an environmental activist thanks to her relationship with Seth teaching her to think beyond herself. Ryan coming to Newport got the ball rolling, but the rest was all them. They forced each other to be better people. Ultimately, they're happier people because of their influence on each other.

oth got picked up because the show actually feels like a SHOW. it has boring moments for sure but watching this video makes me realize the oc is more a caricature than a well-grounded show. thats why it could never go beyond high school years, the newport bubble is so so strong and annoying. even dawsons creek made it out. and stuff that happened within characters are never explored fully for them to flesh out later on, which theyre supposed to i mean theyre characters for a reason.
