House Fire Critique - Text Book, Fire Fighting 101 This is how you do it!
Ive seen this vid before. Poorly run fire scene. All the bodies standing around and no white hats think an exposure line is needed? Not to mention the freelancing.
Only in New York City do they not understand how to put water on the fire quickly. They will let rooms and building burn out everything consumable before they open a nozzle. I don’t blame the men they are mostly top notch. But the policies and SOGs seem to be more about bringing lots of manpower and greater alarms that look good for budget reasons.
FDNY looking pathetic here. For such a great dept this is disappointing to watch. Wanna watch real firefighters? RUclips Stockton Fire dept in Cali.
Lucky girl
Why not put the first line into operation on the first floor entering from the front to push the fire to the rear. This protects a means of egress and allows for a primary search to come in behind under the protection of the hose line. Second line to the floor above with same tactics. Third line to protect the D side exposure and to knock down autoexposing fire on the outside of the fire building.
What did he think he was going to accomplish? Search? Really? He finds a victim, then what?!? He’s all alone and apparently nobody else even knows he’s there. Did he think he could perform a rescue all by himself?!?!?
Correct. This is how firefighter get killed and seriously injured for no reason.
Freelancing at its worst.
All the melting, burring debris seen in this video are why we were taught to have our air pack/mask on and bunkers fully buttoned up before approaching a structure. When did this dumb trend start where FF are putting on mask/bunkers within feet of a working fire? Not just his footage but nearly all videos of recent fires. It needs to stop.
That was the OV guy, right? The BC certainly didn’t seem concerned he went in there and cooked for a while.
Roofers need tethers to be on a roof by osha and so should FF's...As far as venting a roof goes, the house is already damaged and I feel end venting a house would be more safe as ur not standing on a unstable/weakened roof. Put the water in from the ends. Heavily. Europe is way ahead of America in many ways..
I say go inside and pull some ceilings.
Did nobody see the kid in the blue shirt cause the whole thing? F****** awesome, but what a bastard! That's some funny shit!
I always thought it was strange that it was allowed for FFs to walk around on roofs while the house is on fire. I know Americans hate when someone brings up Europe but I think it's worth mentioning that they never go on the roofs. They do VENT the roofs, but instead of walking around on it, they sit in the bucket of a tower and cut from there (while wearing a safety harness.)
Flat roofs are one thing. No business being on a pitched roof.
In the 50's and 60's when my dad was a fireman they had to cut a hole in the roof because they needed to see and breathe. They didn't have SCBA in Chicago until the late 70's.
Horizontal ventilation works great. Most single family peaked roofs have barely any voids.
@ A fog nozzle produces as much as 15,000 cfm exhaust pushing more POC out of an open window than a stupid hole in the head. 🤣
Agreed!
I have a saying that my guys in the back have heard many times while enroute. "one window with fire, pull the 1-3/4. Two windows with fire, pull the 2-1/2. More than that, deck gun."
Who knew fires start when you pick a fight with an alderman, can’t you see the flames with rage in Stephen’s eyes?
Very intelligent people
Kinks, not masked up, unable to mask with gloves on, standing around, lolly gagging masking up and putting gloves on, asking what to do, officers failing to do officer things, im sorry but this was awful. A fire will always go out eventually, this was an embarrasment to the fire service. Sorry not sorry.
Thanks for posting.
I know the feeling...
And that’s why you don’t do fireworks
Civilian here, so no malice intended. What is the reason for the hesitation and reluctance to use the deck gun when its effectiveness is so obvious?
When you find the answer to that question, please let me know. 😀

Check out this footage of the same fire
Social services rolls up..
I would argue that your referencing a 12 year old study. Also. Do you know any of the facts of the Baltimore fire? Were there people trapped? Were they stretching a line to protect truck companies while searching? Were they protecting the interior stairs? Also UL did a study a few years ago that fire can be pushed. Certain streams (fog and straight stream)rotated into a ventilation limited compartment can cause fire to be pushed. That would mean that in your reference, you’re okay with occupants not having a chance on the second floor. Sometimes passing fire is warranted.
First off if you have other studies that are newer or better, please post and share. Secondly I think some of the point Of the FDNY NIST study is that you are not endangering victims. Quite the contrary, you are dropping temperatures throughout including upper floors. The point of many of my videos is not to necessarily be correct or to be all knowing, but to spark conversation.

Another question I have for you. If the study was done so long ago by the FDNY and it was game changing for them. Why do they not use the tactics today?
It’s a minefield out there!
Goooooo get them brothers
Thats not a firework its a firebomb 💀
That fire was not out of control. It was a controlled fire being used to keep homeless people warm on a cold winter night.
Zombieland.
3 story taxpayer???????
Yes, you can have a three-story, defined “taxpayer”.
You should of checked that door for heat Tim
The war years
Technically, a decade or two too late. But what was left of the ghetto back in the 90s for sure.
@@TransmitThe1075 I remember fires repeatedly set until a entire block was empty, so that some developers could buy cheap and replace rent controlled apartments with expensive condos
In 10 years and dozens of fires, I have had 2 fires that would not have been possible to extinguish without 5” hose. That being said, you need to have it for those 1% of fires because when you need it, there’s no other way to get it done.
Can you go into greater detail and explain those two fires and how 5 inch change the outcome?
43 seconds in its big enough to pick up
First window at the alpha/delta corner, you can see it clear
FDNY it's another day in the office new jersey city it's the same thing
No matter how many times you trained there’s always that 50/50 chance you might witness backdraft and yall you can probably do is try brace yourself for it and try your hardest to not panic when you’re in flight mode and trying to help someone put the fire out while other people using spray hose and trying help while one person trying pull u off of them so the others can help
50/50? I bet you most firefighters go through an entire career without ever witnessing a Backdraft. A flashover is another story.
@@TransmitThe1075I used to watch this movie a lot as kid
Not a firefighter so I may be totally missing the mark. But assuming you need to cut a hole in the roof. how is this for an idea. Get one of those chainsaws on a pole get on the arial ladder and position the ladder so you can cut a hole in the roof while on the ladder. You vent the roof but don't risk falling in.
Not required.. Go inside and put fire out
The White Helmet Is Normally For Chiefs That Was The First Person In The Part Of The Video. Yellow Helmets Are Captains And Sometimes Lieutenants Pending On Department Protocol. 🇺🇸😊😎🤗
I completely agree, but I’ve seen everything. Particularly with small rural departments.
What Is Maximum G.P.M. You Can Get out Of A Straight Bore Deck Gun.??🇺🇸🇺🇸😁😊😎🤗
Depends, but it more than a fog nozzle.
Must of pulled the rear drive shaft! Front wheel drive F-450! 😂
Unless you have more than 2k gals of water on the first due, most rural departments here in rural OH would probably go to the 2.5” Blitz due to limited water supply and manpower. Deck gun is awesome for an initial quick hit but if you have a fire that big, the structure usually is a loss.
Can a hydrant supply a truck as fast as a deck gun can dispense it?
absolutely
Nice to see accountability on the FDNY fireground. And all those hoses and multiple guys standing around but not a single line to protect the exposure? Hate to be the armchair q b, but this isn’t a good look for the boys
RIP to the back of their minivan
Let me add another reason for blasting the sirens: To let the person(s) who called know you are coming. I was the victim of a hit and run as pedestrian. Lying on the side of the road in pain from a broken leg I called 911. The dispatcher told me help was on the way, and I was intensely listening for a siren, but they responded with lights only. Had they blasted the air horn on the fire engine pulling out of the station I would have known they were on the way, but because they didn't I laid on the ground not knowing if the ambulance was coming from the station only a mile away or if I was waiting for mutual aid coming from 15 miles a way. I don't want to sound at all ungrateful or critical of the heroes that did respond, but it would have been a little less stressful for me if they used their sirens. The primary purpose of a siren is to alert other drivers on the roadway to get out of the way, but it is also a way of letting stressed out victims know the "cavalry is on the way"
That was awesome ❤
For a point of reference, this station provides service to the World Golf Village in St. Johns County FL. It is comprised of an all-career DS/CT all ALS service. It currently has 23 full-time stations. It is a relatively new department. It has 6 new stations in the pipeline for construction. This county is the number one fastest growing area in the United States. Most of the staff is under 30 years of age, and the adjoining county [ Jacksonville Fire Rescue] regularly hires these firefighters/paramedics away for more pay and promotional opportunities. The county has allowed developers to come in and build 10,000 home developments, allowing them to skate on critical infrastructure such as fire protection and law enforcement and schools. Would I had attacked this differently, absolutely, but I have nearly 40 years training, education and experience to call upon. The indiviual in class C was the Tanker engineer. I wish I could understand the logic being used, but I'll find out. It could be the officer was off and the engineer riding up, the firefighter driving and a the rear-seat firefighter a probationay new guy. Rescue (ambulance) are firefighter/paramedics and if there are no patients, commits to firefighting. I know of the adversion of using master streams and laying out; I witnesses it my entire career at the second largest department in Florida. More than 60 stations and with three shifts it was like having 180 separate departments. Before retirement, I sent out the UL/NIST study on master stream use, referred to as softening the target that disproved all the "old guys theory on external attacks." You'd thought I committed heresy. If you want to see just how much one apparatus manned by one firefighter can put fire out, find the YT video on the Chicago O'Hara Airport drill with one ARFF unit, its amazing.
Thanks so much for posting this and sorry it’s taking me this long to respond
I have committed on the strategy and tactics when this first posted; nothing has changed. Nearest fire station 0.6 miles away. Nearest public/domestic hydrant 165 feet at the next intersection. If you have funds for law enforcement, you can afford fire protection with EMS with DT/DS personnel. Imagine what one well trained engine could have done. You get what you pay for.
To sum it up in one simple term - charli-foxtrot.
Multiple FF arrived on the scene way ahead of the first engine. Maybe if the first people to respond had gone to the station instead of the fire the engine would have gotten there sooner.
Good point
