A lot of people prefer Pacific to Midway, but in terms of mechanics I feel like Midway is well ahead. In Pacific you just throw ships into the meatgrinder with zero consequences, respawn them when they sink they don't mean anything really. Most island captures end in hours long stalemates, fun but not really naval warfare. In midway units are set in stone and represent the tools you can use to attack or defend, and you have to be careful not to throw them away. But in return your actions have lasting effects, ships only repair from module damage and some water pumping, every hit lasts, ships flood and hulls break after too many hits. Airfields and shipyards are gone once they are destroyed, battles have lasting effects. Pacific dumbs down the ship parts of the game, water doesnt flood it just drains a set amount of health, fire is just a surface version of this, magazine is just 20% of your health that isn't really there cos it's so easily set off. The whole point of strategy is making use of what you have and taking risks, in Pacific most of the gameplay doesn't have risks when airfields, shipyards and Warships reach full health again in 5-10 minutes. Artillery auto aims so you don't have to lead targets, I like Pacific but I just don't understand why it took away a lot of the more fleshed out mechanics of Midway. I think it wanted a wider audience I guess, but I like the difficulty Midway offers and it makes the battles more authentic overall.
