W140 Diesel OM603 Startup after Diesel Purge; 1993 Mercedes 300SD

As close to a cold start as one can get after running a Liqui Moly diesel purge and replacing fuel filters. Engine was no more than 50 degrees Celsius. This was my first purge on an OM603, and I didn’t record it as I was essentially practicing. There’s another OM603 in the background that’ll get a purge soon enough, and our OM617 is just about due, so I’ll plan to record and upload those.

      Similar. But not the same. The 300D of the early 90s had a 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder engine in the U.S. The engine here in this 300SD is a 3.5 liter inline six. While I’ve never owned the 2.5, I understand it’s essentially the same design, but with a cylinder chopped off. 🙂

      My thought: Set your parking brake, and check out your neutral safety switch. Easy to get to on the side of the transmission. I’d bet it’s either physically out of whack a little or possibly in need of replacement. I’m oversimplifying a little, but it’s basically the switch that tells the car it’s okay to start in park. I’ve had two times where I had to shift from park to neutral to start this car, but it was intermittent, and I couldn’t recreate it. I suspect all yours will need is either a repositioned NSS if it’s gotten dislodged in any way or possibly a new switch itself.

    if you do it the right way (it takes time) you actually can remove more oil by vacuum than gravity, you put the cap on tight, pass the vacuum tube thru the center of a conic rubber cap (brewing cap) to create a seal on the deep stick tube, and take off the breather hose on top of the valve cover, while your device sucks vacuum place your thumb on the valve cover hole and allow it to create negative pressure (vacuum) when you take away your thumb all the left over oil hiding deep inside the engine will be forced towards the vacuum source. it takes a long time around 1 hour but it will come out.

    • @docthediesel7781
      @docthediesel7781 Год назад

      It’s really hard to say. I like my SD better overall because of the OM617’s durability and serviceability and the actual car’s history. But the SDL’s taller gearing helps it ride quieter at highway speeds, and the extra length combined with a softer suspension helps it glide over bumps easier for a smoother ride. At the same time, it has less low-end grunt than the SD. If these two cars were to race each other, the SD would actually be in the lead through first gear, then when the SDL’s turbo gets going, it really pulls ahead and would certainly clock a faster 0-60 mph speed.

  • @georgecurtis6463

    Most any loss of vacuum will cause this problem. So for a quick check, just pinch off each vac hose and wait about 5 seconds. If it stops, then you know the problem is on that circuit. If not, keep going till you find the bad circuit. Then with a hand vac pump and some locking tweezers, you search for the leak. Do not forget that behind the switch is a vac switch and it has 2 hoses. They get soft from oil and also come off. Course the first thing you check is if the shutoff vac unit does not have a leak. Then make sure the pump is producing enough vac. It's actually rather easy.
