I'm actually really surprised at just how natural that actually sounds
ayy mate!
Bro just got outta jail lol
if ur gonna discuss audio, dont clip your mic
@@clarenegracey excellent advice. I hadn’t thought of that! 🙄 The actual explanation is that the platform we used to record the podcast - Riverside - doesn’t meter the signal it’s recording. And the signal that is sent to the other person is not the same as the recorded signal, so they don’t even hear the distorted signal. So in fact Riverside clipped the signal destructively. As you can imagine, I was fuming. But you can’t have these conversations twice. It would never feel natural a second time. Of course I’m mortified to have my mic so distorted in this conversation. But there was no way I was going to trash it.
👍👍🔥🔥
What tuning is the guitar in?
@@joshv0373 I don’t actually know what tuning Scott recorded in. From memory, the track is in Dm, and I original demo’d in Drop D standard. But Scott’s rhythm hits an octave below that. So either he’s on a 8-string tuned to Drop E standard and then everything down another step, or he’s pitch shifting Drop D standard an octave. I don’t know which one it is I’m afraid!
They sound like shit anyway
Been binging all of these videos. I love the album and as an aspiring sound engineer, I love getting snippets of the behind the scenes. Let’s me enjoy learning the process more because it involves my favourite tracks. Keep making more! 🔥
@@si7inofficial glad they’re resonating with you. Anything specific you want to se from inside the process?
Making a bank of "demo" tones so you don't start from a complete blank canvas. And understanding how to make them somewhat slot together so the demo sounds a little mixed.
@ interesting idea. Let me think on it. I’ll add it to my content list.
My favorite song in the album. Thanks for the breakdown!
@@Kibric I think it’s my favourite too 😎
Thanks for having me!
Any time!
Getting an EP of the year and also a behind the scenes for it is a gift I will eternally be great for 😤🙏 Was a lovely look into how things shaped up from the back end, the story about CULT is hilarious considering where it sits now!
@@Grimboww glad you enjoyed it. Yeah the back story to CULT is pretty ridiculous. But some of the best things are happy accidents.
This is an amazing insight into how the ep was done love it. And youtube that's the wrong Howard Jones you've randomly decided to add to the description 🤣
@@UwUnotewew glad you enjoyed the chat!
Matt is such an inspiring guy! I've been listening to everything Trivium related since I discovered Ascendancy back in 2005 and have definitely witnessed his personal and technical growth via his music. But it was watching a lecture he gave 10 years ago when I discovered how much of a hard worker he is and how much he loves his craft. Again, such an inspiration! And kudos to Sam for being such a great host and asking all the questions I would've asked. Also, Death is my favourite track of the EP as well!
@@willdafer I’m glad you enjoyed our chat and found it so insightful. He was such an open and generous person to speak to. I have nothing but praise and admiration for the man.
Thanks so much for doing these breakdowns!!! super interesting and learning alot from your videos. Loving your videos so far and im absolutely going to be watching your catalog!! cult is quickly becoming one of my favorite songs of all time! So glad to see the inside process and see if i can apply techniques to my mixes! keep up the amazing work!!! cant wait to hear the album in full!!!!
The thumbnail is misleading....
@@joshsmith7033 why do you say that? The thumbnail says exactly what the video is.
@@joshsmith7033 thanks so much! The full record is OUT NOW!!
Crazy how many layers are in this song. It was great to listen to the original stems and how they complement the instruments to generate an atmosphere that's clearly related to the game. Excellent work, and I can't wait for part 3!

@@nathanlilley241 thanks Nathan. Pretty sure I learned a lot of it from you though!!
This is so cool! I absolutely love Howards vocals since i was a teenager and happened to see/hear him in concert. CULT is such an awesome song and i cant get enough of it.
@@baz9293 so happy that you’re loving the song dude!
@@PickUpGoliath You guys did amazing!!!

What's with all the cuts!? Did Howard even make those sentences!?
I just hope that Darren Korb sees this and does the same thing with Periphery for Hades 2
@@CRAY0NEAT3R now that would be fun.
This also isn't the first time Howard and Matt have worked together on a video game project. They also did the God of War 3 metal album Blood and Metal and it seems like Hymns of the Unholy is addressing my biggest issue with the God of War project. As cool as Raw Dog is, it's just a Dream Theater song. The whole album was just a collection of songs that were loosely inspired by the game. This though, this is perfect. This shows respect to the source material while still being it's own thing.
@@CRAY0NEAT3R 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I'm sorry, no choruses? I've been randomly singing "Awake in purgatory" over and over again to myself for the last 2 days. That's a fucking hook

@@Hashtag_Sam I’m glad you enjoyed it. When you’re working with a drummer as good as Malyan it’s worth highlighting!
i've been listening to CULT on repeat since it dropped, and it has quickly become one of my favorite songs! I'm so excited for the rest of the album, especially since my bf said he would buy me the vinyl ^^

I've never played Cult of the Lamb but the song "Cult" made me check it out. When is the rest coming out??
@@silpheedpilot7 on Monday 28th Oct. Only a few days to wait.
@PickUpGoliath Dude, I can't wait. I was reconnecting with music from my teen years, and Howard Jones was such an influential part of shaping what I love. It was very cool to see him on this project. And to add incredible talent like Scott LePage and Mike Malyan is amazing. And your production is phenomenal. After listening to Cult and playing the game, I listened to the OST, and the boss songs are all in there. You can pick them right out. It's amazing.

@@silpheedpilot7 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 I’m glad you like it! I’m extremely proud of it.
Didn't know how much I needed a metal version of the COTL ost until I burst into tears of joy the moment Howard's vocals kicked in for CULT. Might sound a little silly but I just love this game and its soundtrack so much, and you folks nailed the emotions in that track...then finding out that was the first of SIX TRACKS? So so so excited.
@@guana3812 it has a similar effect on me, and I wrote the thing 😅
I don't know how else to say this... y'all made magic happen. It sounds like you guys are sensing that too! Absolutely love CULT, and if this results in more from this team-up, the world will be better for it! Thank you!
@@nth256 yeah, we feel it too. It feels like a really special record. It’s hard to draw comparisons with too many other things, and when that’s the case you’ve normally done something fairly unique.
This is very cool. This isn't necessarily Howard's first time being featured in a videogame (Smackdown vs. Raw, Guitar Hero, Burnout Paradise, etc), however, it is definitely his first time contributing to a videogame where he actually lays down vocals that are intended for it, so that's just awesome. This now generates exposure from a new generation to his work in Killswitch Engage, Light The Torch and SION (soon to be his project with Adam Dutkiewicz).
@@heelgill absolutely. As you say, first time he’s written specifically for the video game, rather than previously written music being used for something else.
Thank you howard
Hi Howard!

@@LLimer3000 you won’t be disappointed. We’re so excited for you all to hear the record!
Cult was a huge banger, and I'm not gonna stop listening to it for the rest of the whole week until the album has come out. Hearing how this album came to be also makes this so much more special. Working on making songs isn't that easy, I've heard that from a good few song artists that I like to listen to that are more frequented on youtube. And hearing how this came to be makes me feel all the more happy knowing just how hard everyone's managed to get this done and more hyped to hear the other songs. =D
