Hi friends, today I'll talk about the top 5 things people presume/ask/ imagine about being a veterinarian. I touch on money, euthanasia, "kick-backs", and whether or not I think being a veterinarian is "worth it" for me. Obviously these are my thoughts, opinions, and experiences so take it all with that in mind. :)

Declawing cats - What's the big deal?

How to choose a Veterinarian

Whether you are a first time pet owner or a seasoned vet (ha ha ha) when it comes to our creatures, being able to find a veterinarian is important! These are my steps to finding your new family Veterinarian.
I lost my puppy, I purchased it online. There were no initial sysmtops direct attack on CNS.Dont buy pers online, get medical verification before taking pet.
Can a kitty tests negative after she tested positive? 😢Does infection means that the virus will stay with the cat forever?
STOP GOING TO BREEDERS PEOPLE!! Too many Breeders are cheap and don’t vaccinate and they will sell you a sick animal without telling you. They just want your money! Vaccinate your pets! Spay neuter damnit!! Too many animals are suffering! And if you have a dog with distemper, you’ll have to put it down!
I wonder if pet CBD can help them?
It's not Alright in anyway.
Very informative, thank you! I have a 10 week old puppy & bc of Covid I can’t get him in anywhere even my other dogs vet can’t see him till next month which is too long. Especially when trying to keep him away from my other dog. So luckily Petco gives this vaccine.
Can fleas transmit the disease when they bite a positive cat then bite a negative cat?
I already know the truth and the horror of so-called declawing. It needs to be called mutilation, because that's what it is. It needs to be illegal, and seen as a form of animal cruelty, punishable to the fullest extent of the law. (Jan Griffiths).
I have a question that’s off topic I believe! I’m just freaking out don’t no what to do! I have a 4 year old yorki shitzu mix she has been fine active eating everything I come home last night and she looked like she had seen a monster she was shivering and plus her back legs were real weak! This morning she stopped shivering and she is loving on me but she is not wanting to walk on her back legs! I’m so confused! She never been injured do u have any ideas or is taking her to the vet really the only option! I just don’t want to wait to long! Thank u hope u can help I’m so scared I actually looked up diseases just to see there symptoms! My name is Tiffany
Can someone please reply to @Tiffany, my dog has the same problem
Hi I understand there's a new deadly disease out which is killing cats I can't remember the name but it's comparable to Pravo in dogs is it the same thing as this Feline leukemia?
Can Felv cured cat get the virus again in her lifetime if she is not vaccinated ever.
Yes! My 12 yr old cat beat leukemia 6 yrs ago and now the blood test came back positive!!
That picture of that spiraling nail makes me so sick to my stomach. It's so unpleasant to look at, i'm very happy that cat wound up ok.
My son fell in love with a beautiful 6 month old puppy we found via a local rescue. After meeting the puppy, I asked the foster mom about the eye discharge. She then informed me the dog had tested positive for distemper over 30 days ago but the eye discharge should be cleared up soon. The dog seemed healthy, energetic and happy other than eye discharge. Does this mean that NEXT the dog will start to get twitches, then get more neurological side effects, then likely die? Or could the eye discharge just clear up and the dog live a long healthy life?
Is the dog ok still?
Hi is there a special food or diet you recommend for a felv + kitty. Just started showing symtoms .Vacs were given when taken to the shelter and felv test was negative . Recently seems lathargic and 2nd test at the vet shows positive. My friend has 4 other rescues and Lily is positive too with no symptoms. Is there anything that helps them feel better. We are worried about Max his appetite has changed. Not eating as much.
The most important thing for cats is that they continue to eat. Typically I recommend the big 3 brands - Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, and Iams Eukanuba. I have also had success with the fancy feast original pate formula. A cat that is not eating becomes very ill very quickly, so if the appetite changes persist more than a few days definitely see your family vet.
@@dr.rachelfuentes8694 Thank you sooo much! So glad I found ya!I will pass the information to her. 🥰🐾
Hi Doctor... Thank you for the video. I have a 13 year old 8lb dog. I heard that senior dogs don't need distemper and parvo vax. Does it hurt to get them the vaccines at this age?
I will still vaccinate my patients as they get older, but if you're concerned you could speak to your vet about checking a distemper titer (blood test).
Every puppy we ever had we got the 5 n 1 shot from the local feed and seed store in Gainesville FL and they were fine. I think of distemper as covid for dogs. A very sad disease and like covid the dogs with the vaccine do much better than the ones that didn't get the vaccine. Get your puppy vaccinated asap.

Hello, my dog (3 years) has canine distemper and is very very sick with an estimated 4 days left to live. Is there anything we can do? What is the best treatment we can be helping him with right now? His is hospitalized but there isn’t much we can do, and he does not have neurological symptoms. Is it really a 20% survival chance? And how long does aggressive care permit him to live
Any updates my guym
My puppy was normal and healthy before 5in1 vaccination but shown muscle twitching right after it’s 1st shot. I thought it was just a side effect of the vaccine. We then went back to the vet after few days and my dog diagnosed with distemper after showing other symptoms like hard paws and nose. How is that become possible? Please could you enlighten me. Appreciate your help.
It’s simple really. Even vaccinated dogs could catch distemper and other dog related viruses But a vaccinated dog fight off much better a canine distemper virus than an unvaccinated one.
She went out an awful lot when she spoke about the symptoms. She may be a professional and even knows the business but she isn't the proper spoke person for this.
To cat lover, who got Felv diagnosed. Let me share you my experiences when Rosa got positive test . I am so sad. Let me share with you Rosa jouney when his first symptoms No energy. No appetite. Sleeping all day. Diarrhea bad For 1 day. Fever 105 f Second day, We took him to go emergency really fast for check up. Doctor give fluids, test... positive felv... Antibiotics shot. The key is he has to low down his temperature. That is number one key to save the cat. Low down his temperature. Cat may need 24 hours fluid cause he has no appetite to drink or eat. At home, try to give him water by syringe 💉 every 15 mintues for enery cause he has nothing inside his stomach. At least water help him survive. Next. He need Anti-nausea shot. He need mirtazapine transdermal ointment to the inner ear pinna every 24 hours for appetite stimulation. He need anti diarrhea oral drop after eating food. After 2 days treatment Finally. Rosa can eat again. We are so happy and happy to see him feel better. The third days , take him to vet again check his temperature, make sure he has no fever, need fluid or not. That is all emergency action we take to save Rosa life. We do not know Rosa future. We try our best for Rosa to make him comfortable and stay happy with us. Love, Rosa mom.
Dr. Fuentes, hearing you talk about listening to veterinary technicians made me remember something. I had chemo treatments in 2018 and I heard a familiar voice while I was there. It turns out that one of the nurses had been a vet tech at VCA for many years. And now, here she was, as a nurse, giving me my treatment.
It's very common for our awesome techs to move over to human medicine. I'm glad there was a familiar voice/ face during your chemo treatments. 😊

I have my golden retriever puppy batting this right now. First started with fever, eye discharge, twitches and now he seems super weak and could barely get up now. Is this considered a late stage? Does he have a fighting chance? We’re doing everything we can to nurse him.
To give your pup the best chances at long term success and survival you should bring them to your family vet. Having not examined them I can't offer guidance. Good luck!

Cat declaw is BANNED in Europe and most other countries. You Americans should really consider getting some ethics, doooh!
Should i give that to my indoor cat my kitten does not go outside at all
I strongly suggest you ask your family vet for personalized care as I'm someone who hasn't met you or your cat, however, the recommendations from AAHA are to vaccinate for FeLV as a kitten that way there is some protection if they ever get out by mistake. If I had an adult cat that is strictly indoors only and does not come in to contact with another cat that goes outside, then I think it would be reasonable to hold off on the FeLV vaccine at this time.
I can't find information anywhere if there's something that can be done for a declawed cat. Does anyone know of any procedures to give them artificial replacements?
Once a cat has been declawed I do not know of any artificial replacements.
@@dr.rachelfuentes8694 Well I'll just keep my hopes up that someone will come up with a way one day. Thank you
No. Replacement wouldn't work anyway. The feet have been mutilated by the declawing, and there's nerves in the feet that are whipping around, and the tendons have been cut and have retracted, so nothing to attach replacements to. (Jan Griffiths).
@@douglasgriffiths3534 so sad I wish people would stop doing this
My beagle puppy is sick it has vomitting, diahhrea, lethargy, not eating, etc I took it to vet they said it's parvo n started treatment. But I want to know how to know if it's distempher. When its sleeping it shakes its legs ball just like seizure but vet said it's just dreaming.
I'm sorry to hear your puppy is sick. I would say it's important to trust your vet. They are trained medical providers and if you pup has tested positive for Parvo, it is likely Parvo. You should always feel empowered to ask your vet questions and ask for more information if you don't understand something or don't agree with something. Best of luck.
Interesting, answers a lot of questions and "wonderings" haha, I'm glad bad apples are not common
Thanks :) Glad it was helpful.
my dog is 1.5 years old and was vaccinated for distemper as a puppy but still found out she contracted the virus. I currently have her on a treatment plan with my vet. can she still live a long and healthy life after recovering from the virus symptoms?
This woman is useless for not answering her viewers questions
I just had to put down my poor 10-week old dachshund Coco last night because the criminal who sold her to me knew she had distemper and didnt tell me. Furthermore, she had been playing with and sleeping in the same bed as my 6-month old dachsund Sophia for the past 2 weeks. Thankfully though, Sophia completed her full course of vaccinations (including the one against distemper) when she was 16 weeks old, before coming into contact with Coco. It broke my heart to see my poor puppy seize and suffer with this horrible virus.
That's so sad
@Dutch Bird Scout I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. No dog deserves to suffer with this terrible virus. May I ask where you live? I'm just curious if you are close to where I am (California,)
Please sue them. Expose them on media too
@@gmar7836 I've tried. Media doesn't want the story because the criminals doing the scamming are Mexican nationals running a sick puppy ring in California. Media is afraid of appearing racist by exposing what these immigrants are doing, so they won't report it.
My 2month old puppy has a cold for a week now and she keeps sneezing causing some nasal discharge. The discharge is clear but when i wipe it, it looks like a phlegm from a human who has colds. Im not exactly sure but i think she reverse sneezes especially when she’s sleeping and she would wake up just to make this snorting sound. She’s very active, doesnt vomit, and eats a lot. Does she have an early signs of distemper, doc?
How is your pup doing now? Please respond my dog has same issues
Sounds like allergies dogs would sneeze scratch themselves runny eyes nose. I would check with a vet to see if it is allergies my dog has allergies he would scratch himself alot.
Lovely 😊
If my dog has distemper can I still get her vaccinated ?
If your dog has distemper he or she is probably quite sick, so no it wouldn't be appropriate to vaccinate him/her. If your pup had distemper as a puppy and survived and is now healthy, then yes I would probably recommend vaccination. The distemper vaccine we use (also known as a 5 in 1) has more than one virus it protects against. It's a good question, and as always you should check with your regular vet for specific cases, but typically I recommend a healthy animal get vaccinated, where a sick one shouldn't.
What do you think would be the appropriate things to do for her to help her recover ? How do I know my dog is recovering ? I went to the vet and they said she was too young to be 100 percent sure but she has all the symptoms for it
If you think your pup has distemper and your veterinarian is not open to discussing what is going on with her, then I think you should potentially find another family veterinarian. Distemper is a serious disease that is usually fatal. It spreads quickly to other dogs that are not immunized.

Hi, this was a great and informative video! My cat is now 1 year old and has tested positive for FELV. At first I was dramatic and assumed he was going to die in 3 years because every article said so but then I saw a couple of positive articles and videos (like yours) that explain how happy their lives can be even with the virus. I was relieved after reading some positive experiences! I love him so much and I just want to give him the best life possible even with the stupid virus. I just want to know if there are any foods that we should start feeding the cat now that we know he could use a boost in his system? And do you think it is possible that he infected my 2.5 year old cat but he was vaccinated for cat diesases and I will now get him tested too just to know for sure, I hope he is not infected too. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Thanks for your kind words! It is possible for your cat to pass it to your other 2.5 year old cat. The best way to check is to get the test (usually done in hospital) to see. As far as food goes a well balanced, commercially prepared diet is the way I would go. Cats (and dogs or people) that are immune compromised should not eat raw or under-cooked foods. They are at a higher risk of illness. Typically the main companies are royal canin, hills/science diet, or iams/eukanuba. The best person to speak to is your family vet but that is a jumping off point. Good luck with your babies!
When talking about these risks are we talking about this procedure being done to adult cats or kittens or both I have read a study I will look for it and post link but that these complications are common when done to adult cats and not as much with kittens. Have you found that to be the case Doc?
I would definitely like to see the paper, but the majority of the cats we see are declawed when they were kittens. Performing a declaw procedure on an adult cat as an elective procedure is cruel. Even beyond the pain associated with adult aged amputation, an adult cat trying to walk/maintain balance/function normally after a declaw will be difficult and will stress them - leading to other issues like behavior changes and inappropriate soiling. No matter how you cut it, it's just not the right thing to do - at any age.
@@dr.rachelfuentes8694 Declawing kittens is also cruel and barbaric.
Mam if my dog is a survivor of distemper virus, is my dog is distemper virus free? My vet in the Philippines say that my dog is a carrier of distemper virus my question is my dog distemper virus free? I hope you response doc.
Thanks for your informative video
Well said Fuentes !!! ❤️❤️
You seem to be a good vet. Thanks for the cats
Leukemia is known as a blood-based disease. Does that mean a cat can have a chance at a cure via a blood transfusion? I'm a new cat owner and my 6 week old kitten (who was given to me by a feral cat) tested a very slight positive for FeLV.
Unfortunately no, there is no cure. The good news is, just because they have FeLV doesn't mean it's a death sentence. They can still live long happy lives when they are positive, it just means they are at higher risk of complications from "regular" infections/diseases/issues. That being said it may be worth retesting in 60 days to confirm a positive or negative.
I couldn't watch further bcz i couldn't stand how she talks. Aaahh!.. And I'm against declawing. Period.
Talks to much - says to little. Never ever do this !!!
Too vs To.....which to use...
@@edwardderocco2889 Too. (Jan Griffiths).
Declawing has been illegal in the UK since 2006 but prior to that, neither I or anyone I know, even in vetrinary circles, had ever seen a declawed cat. It’s just anathema in the UK and always has been. The law passed with barely a mention because it was never done anyway. The Royal College Of Veterinarians where all UK vets are trained have the same ethics as human medicine, The Hippocrates Oath, The first Tenet of which is ‘First do no harm’ so UK Vets don’t declaw cats unless there is a medical reason and all other options have failed. Same goes for tail and ear docking in dogs. It’s done purely for dickheads who think they are hard who want a scary looking dog to match.
Ear cropping in dogs serves no purpose either. Tail docking should only be done if medically necessary. I had a friend who had a Great Dane who slapped her tail so hard when wagging it that she fractured several tail vertebrae. There was nothing to be done except for amputation of part of her tail. She was left with half her tail. (Jan Griffiths).
I didn’t want him declawed... Now I’m mad and feel bad that he is going through this pain...
My parents just got my cat declawed just because we babysit my youngest niece who is 3 months old
Punishing an innocent animal for doing nothing. What caring, loving people they must be. My friend has a grand baby and a cat that was there before it. She felt no need to abuse the cat, just gently introduce it to baby and train it on how to interact. Baby is now 8 years old and cats best friend.
****IMPORTANT I'm posting this on all the FL videos. I found out that MANY times the tests come back wrong and they did with one of my cats. Don't be upset if you get a positive, have your cat tested again with a different vet. That cat is alive today five years later when they had given him a death sentence. Just like with humans, do not trust just one doctor or result!!!
I'm not sure why I didn't see this sooner - I'm so sorry! It's always a good idea to ask questions where there is a result you don't expect. Also FeLV isn't automatically a death sentence. They can live long happy lives - it just changes their immune health and may predispose them to different diseases, so it is good information to have about your pet's health. Also, you don't always need to go to a different vet if you get a positive - FeLV has a 90 day latency period, so in fact they can test negative and truly be positive. In addition if it's a kitten being tested, maternal antibodies can show a positive so the kitten should be retested anyway in about 3 months to confirm. There are additional confirmatory tests that can be recommended when a positive on an adult animal is shown. FeLV is a cruddy disease to have, but it doesn't automatically mean euthanasia and a positive result doesn't necessarily mean your veterinarian is wrong. Having a discussion with your family veterinarian is usually the best first step.
I'm wondering this about my cat🤔. I had a sick cat took him in and negative...2 shot's later with at home antibiotics perfectly fine a week later... forward one month my female cat became ill... take her in and I asked for same treatment as first cat (different vet same office). Refused to do shot's only giving at home antibiotics and said oh well you can always bring her bk in a week if not better 😡😡😡😡 week later take her bk and they said positive... Very odd and unbelievable!!!!! Gave her 2 shot's and at home medicine...doing better but not out of the woods.
Umm... Let's amputate all your fingers on both your hands and see how much you enjoy it!! Yes there may be rare and certain circumstances that it may need to be done but honestly, for most if not all cat owners, YOU DO NOT GET THIS DONE!! So train your cat, have scratching posts for your cat, pay attention to your cat, play with your cat, treat your cat as a family member, trim your cat's nails every 3-4 weeks (need I go on). My wife and I adopted a rescue cat almost 4 years ago. Guess what, we treat her as a family member, pay attention to her, invest time in her, etc. and she has not damaged our furniture and has her own personality which we love!! This vet is way off... We take her on a leash for walks, she loves it. Cosmetic procedure, really??? Come on, it comes down to treating your cat as a family member (as I've reiterated). Why get a cat in the first place if you are not willing and able to do that.
I'm not quite sure why you're saying I'm way off.... I don't agree with declawing, and I don't think it is the right thing to do for an animal unless there is an underlying medical condition that requires surgery - much like other surgeries. It is an optional procedure that I am not a fan of. I'm glad you take such wonderful care of your fur babies. :)
Thanks for replying back. It comes down to how you come across and portray it in your video. To me (at least) it implies a quick solution to people who don't know any better. Too many cat owners think this is a quick solution to their problem, it is not. Declawing is literally a last resort when all other avenues are exhausted (Ghostie Cats makes a very valid comment). All I wanted to reiterate is owners need to pay attention to their cats more and not thinks chopping their first digits of their paws off is a quick solution to their problems, that's all. Bottom line is, education, patience and love
Paul. I agree. My cat is my baby. He has a very structured day as do I as I am ill. Mornings, 1st thing, we get up (yes we sleep together, it’s very comforting) plus I have PTSD and my boy wakes me when I have night terrors. I then go for chemo whilst my Mam comes to my flat and plays fetch with my cat. I return and feed him lunch then we have a cuddle and watch a film on the settee. Then we have a nap. After nap time we go out for a walk - he on his harness for ideally an hour, he calls the shots. Then we visit Grandma and he knocks all her ornaments over. We go home and play with pole toys for an hour then he grooms and comes and lays on my tummy. We watch tv. After a couple of hours we play with the laser pointer until he is shattered then he will have a go at his scratch post and lay on me again. He sleeps a couple hours whilst I watch tv, do crafts or speak to a friend then we have a game of fetch, I put his supper out and fresh water. Then we go to bed. This is our average day. I keep him as busy as I can, he has tons of toys such as a maze with a high speed ball that flies through it that he loves, a fluttering butterfly toy he can play with alone if i’m Too sick or out and he has rope bridges, steps and walkways all around my front room above head height. He is a very chatty cat and ‘speaks’ to me all day and answers whenever he is spoken to, which I love. One so called friend of mine said to me ‘my sister lives in America, she’s got a cat like that, that won’t shut up so her vet cut it’s vocal chords’ I couldn’t believe it..! Why would you do that? I hope none of these declawers, devocalisers have kids cos god help them if they start leaving sticky finger marks everywhere or pulling off sections of wallpaper/drawing on walls or being too loud in the house. Mammy & Daddy may alter you to make you less irritating....
This video supplies the education that vets should always be doing. So many Americans seem to think it’s OK.
Many vets care more for their wallet instead of doing right by the animal, and educating the owner. What's wrong with the vet showing an owner how to trim a cat's nails properly? (Jan Griffiths).
If you declawed a cat he'll not be able to walk stupid
That is correct. S/He will not walk stupid, but correctly!
