  • Hi friends, this video is a 5 minute quick explanation on Feline Leukemia Virus also known as FeLV. I touch on: Who gets FeLV, what are the possible clinical signs, whether or not you have to euthanize an FeLV+ cat, and if I recommend vaccinating for it.
    Thanks for watching! :)

Hi, this was a great and informative video! My cat is now 1 year old and has tested positive for FELV. At first I was dramatic and assumed he was going to die in 3 years because every article said so but then I saw a couple of positive articles and videos (like yours) that explain how happy their lives can be even with the virus. I was relieved after reading some positive experiences! I love him so much and I just want to give him the best life possible even with the stupid virus. I just want to know if there are any foods that we should start feeding the cat now that we know he could use a boost in his system? And do you think it is possible that he infected my 2.5 year old cat but he was vaccinated for cat diesases and I will now get him tested too just to know for sure, I hope he is not infected too. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Thanks for your kind words! It is possible for your cat to pass it to your other 2.5 year old cat. The best way to check is to get the test (usually done in hospital) to see. As far as food goes a well balanced, commercially prepared diet is the way I would go. Cats (and dogs or people) that are immune compromised should not eat raw or under-cooked foods. They are at a higher risk of illness. Typically the main companies are royal canin, hills/science diet, or iams/eukanuba. The best person to speak to is your family vet but that is a jumping off point. Good luck with your babies!

Hi is there a special food or diet you recommend for a felv + kitty. Just started showing symtoms .Vacs were given when taken to the shelter and felv test was negative . Recently seems lathargic and 2nd test at the vet shows positive. My friend has 4 other rescues and Lily is positive too with no symptoms. Is there anything that helps them feel better. We are worried about Max his appetite has changed. Not eating as much.

The most important thing for cats is that they continue to eat. Typically I recommend the big 3 brands - Royal Canin, Hills Science Diet, and Iams Eukanuba. I have also had success with the fancy feast original pate formula. A cat that is not eating becomes very ill very quickly, so if the appetite changes persist more than a few days definitely see your family vet.

Can a kitty tests negative after she tested positive? 😢Does infection means that the virus will stay with the cat forever?

Can fleas transmit the disease when they bite a positive cat then bite a negative cat?

Hi I understand there's a new deadly disease out which is killing cats I can't remember the name but it's comparable to Pravo in dogs is it the same thing as this Feline leukemia?

I strongly suggest you ask your family vet for personalized care as I'm someone who hasn't met you or your cat, however, the recommendations from AAHA are to vaccinate for FeLV as a kitten that way there is some protection if they ever get out by mistake. If I had an adult cat that is strictly indoors only and does not come in to contact with another cat that goes outside, then I think it would be reasonable to hold off on the FeLV vaccine at this time.

Leukemia is known as a blood-based disease. Does that mean a cat can have a chance at a cure via a blood transfusion? I'm a new cat owner and my 6 week old kitten (who was given to me by a feral cat) tested a very slight positive for FeLV.

Unfortunately no, there is no cure. The good news is, just because they have FeLV doesn't mean it's a death sentence. They can still live long happy lives when they are positive, it just means they are at higher risk of complications from "regular" infections/diseases/issues. That being said it may be worth retesting in 60 days to confirm a positive or negative.
