Backpacking Obsidian Trail with Friends of the Central Cascades Wilderness
Friends of the Central Cascades Wilderness partners with the Forest Service and is one of the few volunteer organizations that gets to backpack in Wilderness within the Deschutes and Willamette National Forests! They replace trail-junction signs, close social trails, and restore campsites all within Wilderness!! There's something really special and unique about giving back to our National Forests. It's pretty satisfying seeing that all the amazing work you did makes a lasting impact and will enable countless visitors to explore and enjoy the Wilderness for years to come! We were just there yesterday (6/10/23), and although we could not be there earlier to avoid the crowds it was an amazing hike. We started from one of the nearby parking lots at 3PM, and returned at around 8PM. The eye rolls and death stares from our kids soon washed away when we landed at the top of Vernal Fall. Nevada Fall is next along with the John Muir trail. What an amazing hike it was. The views, the experience, it was all amazing. We got soaked so we definitely need better gear.

    • @RecreationLeader
      @RecreationLeader 2 года назад

      Hi there! Going to Vernal Fall has a 1000' elevation gain that would be a struggle for your kiddos. I have seen children hike up it before, though the four year old would have to be carried. With frequent breaks, motivation, incentives, and maybe I game like "I Spy", it may help your kiddos up the trek.; round-trip you are looking at 3 miles. You can also always hike half-way up till you reach the stairs or just hike to the wooden bridge that crosses the Merced River, I can see that being more doable and you still get views of the Vernal Fall. I am sure you are having a blast right now in Yosemite!!

      Hi there, I would highly recommend going down the JMT if it is open. The JMT is a tad bit longer but offers a different perspective on viewing the falls. The Mist Trail can be hard on your knees going down all those steps. Both trails are steep. You are going to have an amazing time out there!

    Thanks for all of this info. It's a bummer that the shuttle isn't running yet. I've got family coming that aren't as spry as they used to be but have been dreaming of seeing the sequioas for decades. Your footage is reassuring that the trail looks doable for them (with breaks). From what you've seen, do you think it be reasonable to go up Washburn Trail and down Mariposa Grove Rd?

    • @RecreationLeader
      @RecreationLeader 2 года назад

      Hi there! Definitely saw all sorts of folks with various skill levels hike the trail. The two mile hike has a 500’ elevation gain and there is one section that has a steady climb, but with breaks it’s definitely doable. On the way back, walking down the road will definitely be easier. If you are looking to hike to the Grizzly Giant and California Tunnel Tree, it is an additional 500’ elevation gain; though doesn’t feel like it since you are constantly distracted by the beauty around you. Happy trails!

      Hey Daniel, I am planning to go to Yosemite last week of March 2022 :) Would you by any chance know if we will experience heavy snowing? Will there be the need to drive with a 4x4 or use tire chains? Would love to hear your thoughts cos I have zero experience driving in snow...

    • @contentlessincali602
      @contentlessincali602 2 года назад

      @@lorrainelai Well it was snowing last week in the Yosemite Valley, and while I’ve never visited Yosemite in the snow, I do know carrying chains is required in the Big Bear area from November 1 to April 30, whether they’re needed or not. So I’ll be carrying chains, even though I drive a 4 wheel drive vehicle, because I’m assuming I’ll be required to do so. Two wheel drive vehicles are fine, if you have your chains and you take your time you’ll have no issues. When you enter the park, park rangers will give you information regarding chain use or requirements if necessary, it isn’t a big issue unless you aren’t carry chains. Have a good time, it’s one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever visit in your lifetime.
