Faux Rib Stitch for Knitting - No Purling
Welcome to Pattern and Craft!
In this knitting tutorial video I show you how to make a beautiful faux rib stitch that unlike traditional rib does not require any purl stitches! While I actually don't mind purling, it can get annoying to knit rib where you have to switch between knit and purl stitches every other stitch. This is more of a decorative stitch, not a functional rib for necks or cuffs - think fisherman's rib or brioche but not so complicated or time consuming to knit.
The tutorial is mainly for the stitch itself but also includes the info on how to make a scarf with it - suggested cast on, edge stitches, bind off, stitch count, written pattern, etc.

Does this only work with garter stitch? What should we do if we're knitting stockinette flat?
it works with stockinet but it does still curl, so it makes a nice edge but does not eliminate the curling that stockinet tends to have at the edges.
@@latitude1904 actually… so I just tested something out… if you add 1 purl stitch right after the edge stitch at the start and just before the edge stitch at the end for the right (knit) side, and 1 knit stitch right after the edge stitch at the start and just before the edge stitch at the end for the wrong (purl) side of your flat stockinet then it creates a beautiful edge that does not curl, but it is no longer identical front to back. The front looks the same as the normal edge stitch does because that single purl stitch basically disappears on the front, but on the back side you’ll have the slip stitch edge plus the knit stitch so it looks different on the back, a bit wider.
Wieviel mal 50 gr Wolle für 1,5 m Schal?
@@mariannehanel4563 I’m not sure yet because I have not finished my scarf but I will add this information once I know how much yarn it uses.
Hallo Courtney, in Deutschland spricht man beim Stricken und Häkeln von "Maschen" und nicht von Stichen. "Stiche" sagt man beim Nähen und Sticken.
Great tutorial. Does this sequence have a name?
@@cbtringali6799 thank you! I’m not sure if it does, I just kind of made it up and haven’t seen it before, but maybe!
@ then you can give it a name!
This is beautiful! Great results. Thanks😊
I am a beginner, I enjoy watching your video, you explain it well enough to follow. Though I am a Beginner, would it be possible to print the instructions ? I would greatly appreciate it.
how many squares of color did you use.
@@adenabrown1793 the blanket is 7 squares wide and 9 long so 63 total, 32 with the color center, 31 with the white center. But can of course be made to whatever size you prefer.
I'm going to try this. So cool. I'm all about saving the fingers.
Good morning Courtney. Thank you so much for this wonderful tutorial. I started my knitting journey earlier this week. I’ve got the long tail co down, but struggling with the knit stitch. I think all my years of crocheting is coming into play. I’m so used to holding one hook and now I have to get used to holding two needles. But I know I will get there. And one of my cats thinks the needles are a new toy, so wrestling with that as well. 😂 I plan on checking out the Manos yarn. You are the second person I’ve seen on YT that says this yarn is a dream. It looks so beautiful in your video. Take care and thanks again. I am subscribed and will definitely keep watching. I’m also checking out you other videos. 🌼🐱
@@shannonrossi8076 I started my knitting journey earlier this year and it was definitely a struggle- hang in there and keep trying, eventually it starts to feel natural (after a lot of practice). Good luck and thanks so much for watching and subscribing 😁
@@shannonrossi8076 also yes the cats really like to make knitting more challenging don’t they 😹
@@shannonrossi8076 holst Garn Alpakka Silke would also be lovely with this- I used that initially but didn’t like the color I had on hand so frogged it and went with the Manos Serena yarn. Holst Garn Haya would probably be lovely too, though that’s not as airy
Beautiful knitting !
I love this idea! I will try it later tonight. I think it is going to work very well for me! Thank you for sharing!❤
Would your project have to be multiples of 4 for it to work out?
@@dianeoconnell3686 yes ideally, but I think you could fudge it a bit if you were off by a stitch or 2, for example you could skip one of the skipped stitches here and there to get the math to work out.
@ that’s what I thought. Thank you!!!
@@dianeoconnell3686 no problem! You could also skip an extra stitch - whichever looks better with your particular yarn/tension/project.
Thanks for the video. I first saw thumb purling video by Laylock yearsss ago she made it look effortless but until now I still cannot purl the continental way. I’m English style naturally and been trying continental but continue to fail. I guess whicever feels right even though I still want to be able to knit with other styles so I can knit more complicated projects. Anyway, check out Laylock’s old vids, she is one of the best knitters and designers around. Unfortunately, she stopped making new videos years ago. I hope she’s well.
This was a fun one. Thanks.
I tried it after watching your video. This is definitely a great technique. Thanks for sharing!
Amazing! Your instructions are so clear! Thank you for making your tutorials.
@@ann5101 I’m so glad you liked it!
Merci beaucoup 👍❤️👍❤️👍
What an interesting way to purl and I can how this would be very helpful as it puts the yarn in the correct position to form a purl without twisting the stitch. I am a continental knitter and generally enjoy purling. Knitting is so amazing because there are so many different ways to form a knit or purl stitch to create the same end result. There is no right way other than the way it works best for you. Thanks for sharing this, I will definitely give it a try on my next batch of purls. Thank you for sharing!
This video is interresting, thank you. But the AI voice that translates the English version to the French one is horrible so I turned the sound off and used subtitles. In the end I was able to suppress this robotic voice and get the original voice.
I will try this! I use Norwegian Pearl but sometimes I end up leaving a yarn over in between some of my stitches if I don't pull the entire thread through
Nice! It looks like modified Portuguese purling.
Norwegian purl requires no yarn tensioning
I’ll have to try that.🤔
This is how I hold my second yarn color for Fair Isle knitting. I thesion my pattern color this way, both for knit and purl stitch, if I noth knit in the round.
Hi how do I make a clean edge on two colours stripe jumpers? Thank you
Curiosity brought me here but I wouldn't use your technique. I am a continental "picker" I think. I grew up watching my elderly relatives knit and I still not only use my left index finger, but I wrap the yarn around it first at least a million times!!! Works for me!
I've crocheted my entire life and when I learned to knit, this is how I purled!
@@djlclopez128 maybe it’s a crocheter thing then? It was so hard to learn to knit for me as a crocheter! I thought it would be similar but nope- the yarn goes over the needle in the opposite direction, the tensioning is very different, the muscles used are completely different… took me like a month and a half to make anything decent looking haha! And I had to figure out this way of purling since the other ways felt so awkward- though now I see it’s not all that uncommon, just not the norm.
@patternandcraft Yeah I know! I tried knitting so many times but to me, crocheting is just so much faster - one hook in one hand, yarn in the other and you can make rows so fast. Knitting is so much work to get just 1 row! Haha 😂 I'm impatient too so it's difficult going so slow learning to knit. I still hold the yarn in the same hand, I just couldn't change it mentally haha
@ I’m thankful I learned about continental knitting it makes more sense to my brain and I get to hold the yarn in the left hand. I’m still way faster with crocheting and love it but I do like how much softer the result with knitting is so I’m kinda obsessed now.
Almost Portuguese knitting where we wear the yarn around the neck and flick the purl stich with the thumb. It's so much faster and fewer movements.
Thats a lovely edge. Thanks for sharing it.
That’s Portuguese purling.
Nice to see a demo of this. I use my thumb too and it gives me a more consistent tension.
I, too, purl with my thumb. I am self taught and this is just how I ended up purling. This is the first time I have seen someone else purl this way. Thanks for sharing I hope it is helpful to someone.
Same here! I too purl this way and this is the first time I've seen anyone else do it this way. I was sure I couldn't have been the only person using this method as it just seemed to be the easiest way to purl.
Thanks. I may try this but only for stocking stitch as, l think the constant changing from index finger to thumb would slow me down with other stitch combos. I do a sort of combination knitting and purl differently so, it's less of a problem but, means my stitches "face" the wrong way. 😊
I purl very similarly. I just don't take the yarn off my index finger when I'm tucking my thumb in to purl. I think I might still have a bad video of this on my channel. I rarely come across anyone that purls the same as me, outside of my family. Take care.
This would be difficult when working rib stitches or seed stitch, because you have to spend more time switching to thumb tensioning. I knit English style, and I'm able to knit quite fast. I think I'll stick to that. Continental isn't a better way to knit, it's just different.
@@kathleenstoin671 I knit continental because I am used to crocheting so it was an easier way to transition to knitting for me. This is not the traditional continental purl, just an alternative way to purl. I do show in the video how I switch back and forth for rib and seed stitch, which works fine for me but I could see it being annoying too. Just different tools for the toolbox, none are better than any other.
@patternandcraft I agree. Whatever is easiest for a knitter is usually the best! I learned to knit English, but when I do Fair Isle or other stranded knitting, I use both hands, using Continental in one hand and English in the other. I knit in the round, so purling isn't really an issue for me.
Großartig! Außergewöhnlich schön!!❤ Danke!
Great idea!
The difference is… you grab the yarn from the bottom, I grab it from the top.
Thanks for a really clear demonstration. I’m going to give this a try 😊❤️🧶
My continental purling, I push the yarn down with the pad of my pointer finger and it’s fairly easy, quick and a smaller motion than what you showed as a typical way to do it.
@@heraffa I will give that a try
Thank you so much! I’ve been doing continental for knitting and English for purling for years. Now I can do Continental all the time. Clear explanation and demonstration makes a huge difference. 🙂
How much yarn does it use for this?
@@LizaPeters-g4u about 2 balls of tan and 3 of white I think
@patternandcraft in grams or yard, how much could a ball count for?
the yarn I used is 100g balls that are 328 yds each, dk weight yarn. You could also use any yarn you prefer and make a few squares, weigh them and measure them, decide how big you want your blanket and then do some calculations to see how much yarn your blanket will need.
@@patternandcraft ok great thanks a lot, this will help me.
BOnsoir ,où es un explication de macrame de mesure .?? Rien. De tout ...
Yay! So glad this came up on my feed, I’ve been looking for different ways to purl.
@@dobycorder3206 amazing! It might feel awkward at first but I hope you give it a try 😊
I do the wrap around the left pinky just the same, however, i have the index finger under the yarn in the "ready to knit" high position. I stick the thumb in, forward and down to purl with thumb. Just pull thumb out and knit. Easy to do 1x1 rib!
I began doing this very soon after i learned to purl (2012) using the index finger and getting charlie horse when purling. I am quite happy with my tension when knitting and/or purling. About a week ago i got to demo my purling to my local yarn shop keeper and 2 other gals who were there.
This looks doable! Thanks!
You are purling like portuguese style knitters (me!). We purl this way too. I have a video about this on my channel
I like your tip! Now, I mostly crochet, but when I knit I do use continental style. I use a thumb and forefinger style of purling, but I will try your technique next time!
This is very similar to Portuguese purling! 😊
I like this. The principle is much like Portugese purling. When I have to do a lot of purl stitches, I always do it the Portugese way, although I am an English knitter. I like the Portugese purling, but not so much the Portugese knitting as my knitting comes out very tight if I knit that style. Having to do ribbing, I usually just do it English style. I am definitely going to try what you show here, as it looks very easy and does not require a knitting pin. 🧶🧶👌👏
