SF Giants Opening Day roster reaction
In this episode of The Kerry Crowley Show, Kerry talks with Marc Delucchi of Bayside Baseball about the decisions the Giants made in setting their Opening Day roster and the fact they left prospects Marco Luciano and Luis Matos off their initial 26-man list. The San Francisco Giants opened the offseason talking a big game, but it seems things have shifted inside the organization after a winter that hasn't lived up to anyone's expectations. A Giants front office led by Farhan Zaidi that sounded determined to add premium talent has instead sat out much of free agency, and it's clear that the future of the franchise hinges on the ability of the young ...

How Jordan Hicks fits the SF Giants' 2024 plans

The San Francisco Giants reportedly agreed to terms on a four-year, $44 million deal with right-handed pitcher Jordan Hicks on Friday. Hicks has only started eight games in his major league career, but the Giants will apparently see what the former Cardinals and Blue Jays pitcher can offer them out of the rotation. Hicks has clear upside, but the move is obviously a gamble. In this episode of T...

You're stronger alone. Marc loses me quickly (sorry). Roger's expertise with prospects makes him a great guest.
Weird question but could someone explain what I should know about the giants going into the year. I want to follow them closer this year but haven’t paid attention since like 2014. I know pretty much 0 catch me up plz
Good luck with new season. Rather see young guys from beginning. BTW, nothing wrong with 12 man staff. Allows another bench player. When Bart goes, Matos up. Yaz and Slater to bench
Giants FO won't trade RF stale starters to open up spots. Optioned their youth, because it's NOT a good franchise. Enjoy their games and season.
We had this game! Webb pitched great and we actually got hits. Bailey's error flipped the game upside down. Ugh!!
Hitting was absolutely atrocious as well though
Ahmed was completely out of control covering second on a one hopper straight to the bag. Just saying, Crawford makes that play or keeps it in front of him. But probably doesn’t get the hits.
@@joelweinstein5552 I get what you're saying. It appeared like Ahmed slipped once he got to the base, but that was a very difficult hop that Bailey gave him. Plus, with a runner on third in a very close game I'm not sure you even attempt that throw.
Bomel ain't all that...his lineup and moves were an abomination. Bailey and Yaz hitting in the 9th...(and all game for that matter)?? no bueno.
Yaz is an issue. He is not a starting outfielder. Bat can’t justify a corner spot.
No longer a Giant fan, but consider some hitters are in bad spots, like Estrada, who used to bat in 2-hole. At least, he's not hitting .000 like Yaz and Slater, who get a free pass since FO likes cheap, low quality players and won't cut to bring up Matos. This isn't on Melvin, because ownership didn't FFF (Fire F'n Farhan). Here's problem: 1) Giants got swept by Dodgers 2) Giants not likely to get WC. Beyond that, it's noise. Just don't fall for fake moral victories like we're "competitive" since FO built a losing culture.
Giants lost their first games in 2021 as well
Very good point 😉
Giants lacked defense, aggressive baserunning and power last yr and need 2 players or more with 20+ steals to manufacture runs having players who need to get the lead out in "K" happy lineups. If Chapman was significant upgrade, why didn't he sign a 1 yr deal instead of 3? His best years are BEHIND him. What prospects? Matos and Luciano got optioned, and the team with prospects are Rockies. This team needs to trade Yaz, Slater or Conforto and bring Matos back to get younger-Get real and leave cheerleading KNBR.
Wow Pete Townsend!!
Have loved following the progress of Giants' farmhands for many decades. Of those prospects who DON'T appear in most pundits' top ten list, who's progress are you most excited about down on the farm?
So glad you’re back!!! I needed some Crowley!!!
Finally! You made it back to us here on RUclips!! Looking forward to hearing more from you ⚾️
Glad to have you back!
sf lowkey got a nice squad
Building the team through pitching and defense is the right call I feel. Bank on this to get wins and maybe we can attract hitters by saying “you’re gonna play for a contender that can win”. Pitching and defense also favors our ballpark well so build the team that can excel at home. Let’s go Giants
Keeeeerrrrry Crooooooowwwley is back baby! 🔥
I like the optimism you two have together. I had to turn Kruger off last night...super negative.
Wake up babe! Kerry Crowley dropped another video 🗣️
Yay! New Kerry video!
And next year's class of free agents looks even better
Play Ball!!
The Giants sure did push all-in this year. I don't know if it will matter in the end but at least the effort is apparent for once. I think Yaz and Slater might be expired goods this year based on health and performance for 2022-2023. The most important thing I will be looking at this year will be the team defense. They were worst in MLB last year. Shortstop is also a big question mark for me. I still think some kids emerging is essential for the Giants to be relevant this year.
What’s great is Lee and Hicks are young. Catcher: Bailey and Sabol are young, Bryce Eldridge has 1B look good in the future, Estrada is under 30, Fitz and Marco are young for SS and Walker Martin and Maui Ahuna and Averson Arteaga make SS look great for the foreseeable future, 3B has Schmitt for the future, OF has Matos, Munguia, Lee, Bericoto, McCray for the future too. Pitching we all know has a long list of young guys here and coming too. I’m just too lazy to list the arms lol. My point is, I finally feel good about the future and the farm
This team brought in players haphazardly. They can't even beat the Padres, and Zaidi won't make tough love trades to better the roster. They cut their youth position players and only excitement is Ahmed's comeback. Giants are a waste of time.
I think Zaidi spent this offseason because he knows he’s on the hot seat-remember Johnson said he hadn’t signed the extension for Zaidi. I believe ownership was trying to create the illusion of a cohesive front office to recruit Ohtani and Yamamoto and once that didn’t work the particulars came out about not signing the deal.
Not landing either is a blessing in disguise. You're basically losing out on a rookie and a .300 hitter that might pitch for another three seasons from 2025. To add that neither one of them would have added much if anything to the infield/outfield
Keeps options open for the 2025 class of free agents as well.
Great amount of information… l’m so excited for the Giants future
Most enjoyable cast of the year!! Loved it!
Know you've been working a ton. Hope you're getting some rest. Righetti's interview on KNBR is amazing. Covers everything you/Roger talked about w/our young arms. Giants minor leagues: "Last few years, if they went three innings they seemed to be happy. Turned big leaguers into openers. You can’t just automatically switch a button and say they’re going to go 180, 200 innings."
hope he doesnt let the giants and koreans down thanks for the support from korea
Whith these expanded A.I. bullpens you really need at least 7-8 starters and not 3.
I believe Bob Melvyn was hired because he is perfectly ok managing a mediocre team.
Padres underachieved with all the talent they have so expectations are WS or bust in SD. In SF, Melvin's trying to overachieve to make the playoffs and Zaidi can claim success if they do.
I can easily see Matos and/or Ramos becoming All Stars. Bailey too.
Meanwhile Schmitty might be the best out of all of them
This isnt a get-lucky-and-get-a-ring type sportstown. The 49ers changed the game.
I am more than a bit perplexed as to why Giants got rid of Desclafani and Wood and Stripling all at the SAME time. These guys would have pitched a ton of innings along with providing priceless veteran pitching leadership. Yolo I guess I dunno.
Bobby Evans >> Farhan Zaidi During Zaidi-era the San Francisco Giants have less success and worst attendance than Winnipeg Jets. Meanwhile the Jets want movebout of Manitoba.
i dont know who the guy on the left is but regime change is good when youre CRAP for the previous 6 years, they are not going to the playoffs and they are not finishing above 500. the owner doesnt care so i think farhans safe anyways
Wilmer Flores playing 2B is a pitchers worst nightmare
Going to have to basically disagree with everything you said to be honest.
Giants brought in Ahmed rather than Crawford because he Cost less. FZ believes Ahmed's bat is the same as Crawford, which is lousy. Ahmed's acquisition is NOT about "glove first" or "Gold Gloves." Last yr., Crawford made $16M in '23 and Ahmed made $10.6M. Also, Ahmed's awful and opens up his left foot when swinging at inside pitches instead of using bat lag to barrel up inside, challenge FB's.
No he brought him in because if they need him, cool he has a history of being a solid defender. If the Giants end up not needing him, they can just cut ties with him and don't have to waste a roster spot on him. Similar to what they did with Gerardo Parra and others in other spring trainings.
@@MrGrammarPolice Nope, what does Parra have to do with the price of tea in China? That's incorrect, because it was solely an economic decision. Crawford was a solid defender, but they cut ties not to pay him $5M or more only to take play time from Marco Luciano. Ahmed won't as his bat is even worse than Crawford, and Giants realized they needed a back up to "bench" Luciano if he plays poorly.
It may all seem funny to you gentlemen, but some of us dont! Its humiliating embarassing, sf, made a conscious decision not to compete. Not commit, just profit, and winning doesn't add up to more money!! That's the key fact none of you journalists, loosely held, ever mentions!! If winning made you a ton of money, you would do it. SF made a calculation that risk outweighs potential increases in income. Fans need truth, go watch the other teams, pick one trying......its easy bochy wears rings....
The only thing consistent about the farhandjob, era, is the net profit. And its due to not spending on roster pieces. The commitment to cash is all that matters, no matter how many sycophant minions, sf buys off in media, they suck! I'd cover a real team. The SF team is chaos, the location miserable. The league has a competition problem. Diluted talent pool. Foreign players ruling, its unwatchable!! Fk baseball, esp SF and farhandjob! Brandon crawford, humiliation....another urinal!! Toilet trash the entire org!! Every spokesperson a fraud liar advertisement.
Im probably the only guy that loves this team. It's not easy getting the players Farhan has come up on when there's so many teams and scouts snagging the seasoned guys. It adds some misfit demeanor and is also very effective when building a roster.
Team is extremely improved over the roster of the last 2 years without really risking or going over the luxury tax. Some teams have been rebuilding for decades. Farhans done it on the fly lol
There is a ton of talent (Matos, Ramos, Bailey, Harrison, Schmitt, Meckler) minus SP which is super frustrating
The Giants aren’t even close to the Dodgers. The Dodgers will will 121 games this year.
Yes, it's true but Dodgers are stupid and arrogant with their slogan "Embrace the idea that people are coming after us." Teams are going after the Rangers not them. They should worry how mlb has intentionally made their playoff system biased in favor of WC teams winning instead of great regular season teams who can't win when it counts most.
@@michaelmartinez3500 the Dodgers won’t win the WS. But they will finish with the best regular season record
@@emmanuelvacakis4463 We know they won't win it all, but Dodgers don't. They need fake adversity, as I printed above, to motivate themselves in postseason.
Those of us who embrace lost causes will get sucked in again this year.
Arizona State level of interior decorating
23:18 This line hits home. One of the hardest things to come to grips with as a Giants fan is that the franchise has lost its prestige and is barely respectable. It’s depressing.
Absolutely, it's even more embarrassing that KNBR's calling has-been Chapman a "marquee" player when Wilmer Flores is a much better hitter. I won't be bothering to watch this boring team as is if I'm more enamored to see if Ahmed can beat out Luciano than if Chapman is better than JD Davis or Flores. Time to check out and do something else.
@@michaelmartinez3500 Exactly. There’s a reason Chapman only got $54 million with a bunch of opt outs.
@@tloz92 Boras, the Gloria Allred of mlb agents, lowered his standards and ensured Chapman had opt outs, so he can find another team, in '25, if does slightly better in '24. Only Boras bad player, Conforto, is forced to stay in SF. Chapman's another lackluster, unexciting signing, and the contract tells you it won't be a long stay in SF. Chapman batted 7th in Toronto, but Giant homers, on KNBR-the sports MIS-leader, are talking about a "middle of the order" bat when he's ANOTHER strikeout machine in their lineup.
And then you have the smug, chit-eating down's syndrome grin as you willfully just pander to every boomer idiot fan that listens to your current employer. Remember, you QUIT beat writing because the travel was "too tough" for you? Loser. Dork.
I like how you totally forget how the Cueto and Shark signings went and why the team hired Farhan in the first place. Cueto after 2015 was a better bet thaqn Snell after 2023 too btw. Yet you and the other KNBR dopes think it's "totally ok" to just wildly throw money to fix all the problems. Again, as if you turds did not see how AWFUL the Mets season went last year. But keep lying, you dishonest turds.
