This time I'm showing how I captured small birds in flight with the Nikon Z6II. Barn Swallows are amazingly agile. Can the Z6II's autofocus lock on to fast-moving birds? How can you photograph birds without bird detect Ai? I only had 30 minutes at sunset to conduct this test and get the photos. Let me know what you think.
Shooting video with a 500mm lens and a Nikon Z6II

Had some fun shooting video content with a super-telephoto lens. AF-S Nikkor 500mm F4 on a Nikon Z6II. The original video is 4K @24 fps. Graded and retime in DaVinci Resolve. I like how the clouds were moving but the wind turbine wasn't. The Leofoto tripod was rock solid during the shoot and I never had to stabilize the clips.

was using Evoto they have more feature but Reblum is amazing and with a lifetime license make more sense.
i like Reblum, but for flexability and more futures is Evoto for me better
Make this video again and add @aperty or just do Reblum vs aperty since Reblum was the winner 😅
Reblum Lifetime purchase is $249.00 compared with Aperty $399.00 CAD for 12 months. That tips the scales for me. Plus Reblum is getting a new AI model in the next full release!
@@WAPhotowhat about the bodyskin ? Seems like just evoto has the option to edit it?
I'm amazed by the quality of this app. It's way ahead of retouch4me or evoto
Reblum is the winner for me, in this test.
They've updated the feature set with a few adjustments and the ability to have Reblum save your last settings so you don't have to choose the preset each time. A new A.I. model is coming-out in the near future too!
Testing tracking on an object that isnt moving isnt showing much i love my z6ii but low light tracking with that box is not that good if you got plenty contrast it works well but i dont rely on that box there are better modes for tracking
Thank you for posting this. I’m thinking of switching to Nikon from Olympus. But a z6iii is a bit out of the range for me at this time (wouldn’t have enough for the lens!). Is the focusing in z6ii the same as z7ii? Better? Worse? Thanks for your time.
@@briancampbell5243 The Z6II and Z7II use the same AF algorithm.
Exactly what I was looking for. Pretty impressed with Reblum. It's simple and almost no option, but it seems to do a fine job. I also love that there's a lifetime license option.
@@YogueDaddy I’m working on some possible automated functions with watch folders for tethershooting. If it goes well I’ll post the results.
@@WAPhoto That would be pretty nice. But if you're doing headshots, I guess the best options would be to do it with Evoto as that can handle flyaways, glasses glare, etc. I bought Reblum yesterday as that will be very interesting for my business, but it's far from as complete as Evoto. I thought about trying to automate one of these apps with a watch folders using shortcuts, Applescript or something else.
This is very helpful indeed….coz I’m just debating about this camera or if I need to spend more. Thanks for this video.
@@williamchan8866 Glad to hear it helps. Technique is really the key.
Awesome review and thanks for taking a look at multiple skin types and different scenarios, very few did the same ❤

🚨 Great video. Have you done a video on focus tracking for birds in flight?
Yes, two different ones are posted. Large birds in on video and the other video has swallows.

useful!
William, i shoot with the same canera, lens, and post- software. I am so impressed by your demonstration and the convincing results that you obtained. You've inspired me to keep practicing to get better results from my gear. Best regards.
Great demo, convincing. Thank you.
Thank you, William, for this inspiring test of AF eye tracking. I use the same gear you used in your trial, and i am one of those people who have been disappointed. Your demonstration has motivated me to keep trying and learning.
I was frustrated and disappointed by the autofocus system in general, but particularly eye autofocus on the original Nikon Z6 so I sold it. It was quite unreliable autofocus performance, especially in dim light conditions. I was using it with Nikon 40mm f2 and 24-70mm f4 Z lenses, and 70-200mm f4 VR F lens via FTZ mk1 adapter. I just couldn't rely on the autofocus system. It's a shame, because I really liked the camera in general. But I had enough blurry eyes (and possibly sharp eyelashes ) so I went back to my D4s. Is the Z6II really that more accurate and consistent than the original Z6 was? Somehow, I am very cautious, but still quite interested getting into the mirrorless world, and being happy, I even consider buying a Sony a7III, for eye tracking accuracy and sharpness, but...that is completely another world for me since I had been using Nikon for the past twenty years...
Great vid , I have had good success with BIF with a Z6ii and that includes snap shots where I wasnt really trying. I think the probs with a lot of the complaints with the camera are down to a few simple reasons. It is priced at a place that it will be bought by newer users and they are expecting the camera to do all the work and not realizing that there is a lot of skill in taking action pics. Yes the higher end cameras with better AF systems will help like the Z8/9 (or from other brands) will increase hit rate but only if coupled with skill. Now I could be wrong of course but I don't think many people people walk into a camera shop and buy a Z9 + Long tele off the bat. They are bought buy seasoned photographers. I would guess a lot of messy shots are more down to having other elements set wrong like shutter speed etc.. the image is blurry and the AF is blamed rather than one of the many other settings that could be off. Now don't get me wrong I would love Nikon to give us Z6/7ii users bird AF , but where I would find it useful is for skittish birds on perches, where you find the eye and don't have to mess around with composition or moving the AF Box.
Finally. I’ve found what I’ve been looking for. Thank you so much. 😀
Glad I could help!
Yup, you want to test the life of your shutter, stick to swallows in flight! I got a couple on a tidal creek about a mile from my home & on a pond elsewhere. There not shy. Every now & then they would take a break & land within 5’-8’ of me on wall where of a walk path bridge or trees. But when they feed, they’re where the insects are. Rite after them is the Kingfisher. All that matters is that you’re happy with your setup. A1 down to 400 in focus or keepers total including things like position, etc.? Either way, that’s a 2.5% keeper percentage. Happy shooting.
What shutter seeds you select, 10 fps or 15 fps? Will 70-200 Z lens take T.C ? Thanks
Camera was set to Continuous High Extended. Part 2 is now available.
I am in Charolette Can you suggest where I can travel nearby for taking Birds in Flight photos like Bald Eagle etc Thanks

Good video - I'm impressed. I've just bought the Z6 original in Nov 2023 with firmware 3.5 - I shall give this a try. I have the older model with only one processor, but my firmware is 2 years newer so it may work on my Mk1. (luckily for me, even if the Z6 eye-tracking isn't great, My style is shooting single frames and I place my single focus point for most shots - so Eye-AF is not a huge concern for me.)
Hi! Really great and useful review. Did you try wide area animal eye tracking on your dog maybe? How does it work?
Thank for the video . Would you mind to tell me what is DEFAULT A3 SETTING FOR FOCUS TRACKING WITH LOCK ON SET TO 3.
You're into music literally almost gave me a heart attack. I have PTSD now thank you
lol
This series is the best on the Z6ii's autofocus system. And it's soo comprehensive! The initial reviews didn't do this camera justice. They didn't take into account the software updates.
Bro can you show me how to focus on the Z6ii camera
You are starting to persuade me to sell my Z9 and keep my Z6ii. I’m 73 and my arm strength isn’t what it used to be. The Z6ii is much lighter and easier to track subjects with the Z100-400mm lens. The one time I had to really test this combo was when we were shooting sandhill cranes in flight. Each image in the sequence was perfectly in focus. I still have much to learn about the autofocus system on the camera, but I think it’s worth the $4k difference in price!!!

These tests are so hilarious. After all your hard work and marvelous series of vid's that show for everyday normal kind of moving photography, and in varied lighting, the Z6ii (and I presume 7), are more than useable. Then you still get the sceptical clowns writing in saying ".....oh but you didn't do this and you didn't test that". Just ignore them. You could stand naked on the top of Mt Everest, with a chandelier strapped on your head and juggling two dinner plates, and they still wouldn't believe. Let them go and buy their S..... and F.... and regret it later!
Lol you are so right! Thanks so much.
Yes - now that the Z8 is out, everybody is saying how useless the Z6ii is and they can't go on without a replacement and they have to spend 5K for this new big hit wonder. I'm a gig/event/wedding photographer in Perth, Western Australia. The Z8 has been released here and is a horrendous 7K - body only. That means for my two bodies, I'm expected to spend $14,000. This stuff is crazy. I shot a 5 hour gig last Sunday with around 1.8K images. There were people dancing and jumping around, and out of all of those, I literally had under 15 images that were out of focus or unusable. I find them fantastic cameras, the images are truly beautiful (since I changed over from 10 years with Fuji), and the focus is good enough. Sure, I'd love my AFC tracking to be a little better, but if you know your schtick, and have the right settings, these are infinitely useable pro cameras. I certainly don't want the huge files of the Z8, a body that is 200 grams heaver, bigger, and to spend 7K per body. People are crazy spending all that money and chasing something that may give them a 10% or something increase. I'm spending my money going for a fortnight to Japan in October and 5 weeks to India at year end. Guess what body and lens I'll be taking with me?
Well said. Too many are chasing technology instead of working on techniques to improve their photography. Time to pickup a spare Z6II or Z7II cheap! Lol
I have Photopills so I probably could check this myself, but part of me says the samples shown maybe would have been better using the same subject distance of 100 ft for both lenses in the comparison. In regards to AF, technique and proper settings will pretty much take care of most problems. Where I think the Z II's potentiall have fallen short though compared to the competition is when focus is lost for whatever reason (something obstructs the view of the camera) and so not so much locking focus but having to refocus again is where many of the complaints come from and to a point, it is a valid argument. But At the same time, I've seen some wonderful shots from people shooting the Z II's with BIFs. So it's mostly technique and settings, but focus re-aquisition coulid be better (initial focus lock is usually pretty good and if you can maintain focus lock, then there aren't really any problems). The other thing I've noticed, and it's not specific to wildlife, but rather eye AF for people, I have found that the focus can drift off the eye or face even if the subject isn't moving or say they look away briefly and then back at the camera (sometimes the focus doesn't catch the eye or gets stuck on the cheek), and this isn't a settings or technique thing, but just some quirk of the Z system that i've run into that can be frustrating.
Where is this located?

Im assuming your using native nikon z lenses? I shoot with Tamron 2470g2 I find it doesn't find the face let alone the eye when shooting against bright sky.
Yes I'm only using Nikon S series lenses.
Great job ! Even more pleasant after seeing 100 video bashing nikon autofocus ;)
Wow, thanks!
Thank you for the video that I found only today and it reflects my experience with a Z7 1st generation. I do have great BIF photo even with the 24-200. Sure the Z6/7 will never have bird eye detection so they aren't Z9s but as you said, with the right technique and a bit of extra work they are perfectly capable to do BIF. BIF are the most difficult thing, for everything else including sport I found the Z7 to be a winner and IMO who has AF problems doing surfers etc. didn't develop the right technique. For example with Surfers I use a 500pf with tracking mode and I track them for a very long path; virtually 100% of the photo are keepers. With BIF is not 100% but I usually have between 50 and 70%
80% of these photos are out of focus. The focus IS on the dog, but always a few layers behind the head. I have the absolute same problem with my new z6ii. All my dog photos are unsharp on the face and focused on the back.
I really appreciate you showing this series and can wait to try for myself.
Part 2 is posted
The D850 has a mechanical switch for locking focus. What is the equivalent of that on the z7II?
Bind to 1 of the function buttons on the front next to the lens...
That is interesting, I have seen two more of this test but aleays in Auto Área. Could be interesting to do the same in such challenging conditions but with the wide área L box to see if the recognition of the face works equally well. In doing that you would recreate the scenario you'd have for example un a wedding with lote of faces, situation in which you couldn't use the auto área Af. Great video anyway, thanks so much!!
I see a difference between 1.3 and 1.4 Having AF working better makes my work load easy
Love the content. I took photos with my Z6II and 200-500mm 5.6 f mount and distance approx 20m and non photo sharp, next time 70-200mm in the bag.
work hard on developing the relationship with the camera, I use a Z7 1st gen and the 500pf most of my BIF are sharp, virtually 100% of everything else is sharp.
Check out Part 2. I used the 200-500 zoom
HEY.
Thanks for your findings and sharing. It's a very good reference. Beside, the intro and ending background music is too load compared with the voices of contents in this video which made my hear hurts...😅
Nice review. Lets accept it. As a nikon user i felt nikon is not on par with sony and canon. The AF didnt work as it should have been. Nikon mirrorless system of Eye AF or tracking AF cant trace moving animal or human, it's just terrible. Even R7 (2018) is far better than Z9 (2022). Nikon system works best with a slowly moving object or stand still human that facing camera. Felt disappointed. Thanks for the review, am considering to sell all nikon gears and buying R6 !
Did you check out the other eye detect videos?
Hi sir I have Nikon Z6 and I'm using 50mm 1.8G with FTZ. While shooting with 1.8 aperture there is slightly blur but with 2.8 aperture fine and getting sharp images. what is problem in it? Will you please help me for it? TIA
No, there is no problem. Its usual thing. 2.8 aperture is sweet spot we callled. It recommended that we shouldn't not start with minimum f number and max f number (it will not provide sharp images)
