Tetsu & Reid
Добавлен 6 май 2023
Hello! We are Tetsu and Reid, a Japanese and American couple living in Japan with a goal to travel around the country, van style!
We chose this path after being separated for three years due to boarder closures. We want to make up for our lost time together.
This is our experience buying a used van in Japan that we are converting into a livable space for our trip. We will show the process of creating our micro home and the travel that follows next!

Fuji Sunsets, Hydrangeas and Cliffs in South Chiba! Real Hidden Japan
Summer in Chiba Japan! In June we went around the southern areas of Chiba. Chiba isn't a high tourist destination, it is mostly locals and some people coming from Tokyo for a quiet beach spot. While we discovered there was not any major destinations here, there was many little hidden gems. We discovered a few spots that seemed like they should be filled with tourists but only we and a sparse few walked through! Our favorite was the hydrangea temple. Even when we parked we weren't sure anything was there but quickly found a massive temple ground completely covered in hydrangeas and even trails going up the mountain. If we did a hydrangea van life like we did with sakura, this would be one ...

That Fuji sunset was insane! Happy new year to you both 🎉
You can often see the view of Fuji! Chiba is interesting place! Happy New Year!! We hope you have a good year!
@TetsuReid I haven't visited much in Chiba but I will have to now 😀
I love watching your videos soooo much! You're such a sweet couple and you tell stories so well. Next year, I'm planning to visit Kamikochi and sing the Kami-kochi song just like you haha 🤣. BTW, Happy New Year in advance, may you all be blessed with good health and happiness 🎉.
Thank you so much!! Kami-kochi song is the best! haha
Wow congrats on making it through the whole trail. Does that mean you had to walk back the same way? If so, that would be even tougher trying not to slip.
Ah Ainokura (from your videos) is also our favourite.
🤩
This reminds us of our 1st visit when we saw these beautiful flowers in full bloom. We got so distracted with the food stalls before we even started the walk. LOL. Thankfully it was not so crowded during that visit. In all our travels so far around Nagoya and Tokyo, the Kawazu Zakura was the best experience. The place looks very very empty without the sakura when we decided to stop by on our 2nd visit to Izu. What a difference flowers make to a place. Waiting to see in April 2025 Miyaki and Yamagata, whether it will be as wonderful an experience.
We have been to Hakuba twice and it reminds us of mini Switzerland. Incredibly beautiful with the alps in view. Enjoyed taking their cable cars up to the top of their mts. If you like Hakuba’s scenery, you will be blown away by Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland scenery especially in the little town of Wengen and Murren.
@@Traveljet14 we hope to take the cable cars next time and hike a bit during the summer!
@@TetsuReid The hydrangeas will be out in summer and they are lovely. We enjoyed Mt. Iwatake and Goryu. Happy travels.
A very sweet kitty.

Thank you for being honest about the expenditure, the positives and negatives of your adventures. I am sure you will not regret it when you go back and watch the videos - it’s an experience that is so precious and not everyone gets to do it or are able to rough it out like both of you did. It has also brought much fun and relaxation just watching you journey through the different places. Most of all, let the frustrations help both of you grow more patient with one another. To appreciate the strengths as well as overlooking the weaknesses of each other. 💕
@@Traveljet14 thank you so much for the kind comment. It is definitely a trying environment at times when you think about it but the kinds of things we get to see are those of dreams. And we’ve definitely learned a lot about each other!
Proud of you guys for sticking it out and learning along the way. It’s a lot of “growth” not only about van life but marriage relationship.
Horrible couple who were too proud to apologise😠. Thankful you didn’t have to spend much to fix their mistake. Glad you decided to still enjoy yourselves inspite of that unfortunate mishap by the rude and insensitive couple.
Wow that knife for slicing through the tuna is really super duper sharp. Yummy ¥500 sashimi! As for the glorious sunrise, beautiful shots capturing the perfect scenes. Thank you.❤
@@Traveljet14 thank you! Sometimes it’s hard to wake up that early for these shots. You’re all excited at bedtime but once the alarm goes off you don’t wanna get up!
@ Yes I totally understand😁 Japan is the only place we are forced to wake up early to have breakfast at the ryokans. But never as early as you guys trying to catch the sunrise.
Beautiful waterfall - like super thin ribbons flowing down.
Great job! Enjoying all the DIY Van videos except for the constant repetitive cutesy music that drives us nuts at times😂. It’s amazing how both of you have persevered and done so well inspite of the challenges. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Great start! Oh your rings look like our wedding rings but after 41yrs of marriage, our fingers have gotten too well fed and they won’t fit. Hahaha. Muscle and labour Tetsu teaming up with good planning Reid. 👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼
It’s great you documented your journey and van life. I will slowly enjoy watching how it all unfolded - it’s most relaxing and enjoyable to watch how you all started off. We visit Japan at least once yearly and perhaps we will put it on our bucket list to see as much of Japan as possible in the next few years.. We agree Japan is one of the best places to have a van life and I’m glad you were adventurous enough to do so. Not lovers of cities but lovers of nature and sceneries, ryokans with natural onsen water. We have a favourite ryokan surrounded by trees on a little hill in Futo (Izu) with the view of the sea beyond that we always end our journey in. Yummy Washoku meals and ample natural HOTSPRINGS from the ground up. Keep your videos authentic and real, have fun and don’t take each other for granted. God bless!❤
Beautiful shots of the Sakura with the misty sunset in the background. It’s so therapeutic to be amongst nature that “Tsukurinushi” has created for us to enjoy. Esp if there are less crowds. This is one of the places on our Tohoku April 2025 trip. Thank you for sharing.
So beautiful. Thank you for sharing. We are hoping to be there in April but worried about the crowds if it is in the weekend. We don’t drive so the shuttle bus may be so crowded.
Thank you! When we went they had shuttle buses come very often and we did not have to wait long! They have buses specifically for the park in this season located across town. The ones I know of are at the train station and the parking lots!
@ oh that would be great. You mentioned the video was on April 6 which is a Sat. We will have to give it a try and take it from Fukushima station which I expect to be more crowded than the carpark. The other sakura view we hope to visit will be Funaoka when we are staying at Sendai. Then we move down to Koriyama. If it’s a choice between Kitakata or Hanamimaya and we can only choose one, which would you recommend? Kitakata is more accessible and convenient for us from Koriyama without needing the bus but Hanamimaya has such a natural vibe to it with the mts in the backdrop. We have seen the sakura in our previous travels but seldom get to see the weeping cherry trees. Appreciate your opinion. Thanks.
@@Traveljet14 Thank you for the reply! I am leaning towards the weeping cherries because while both experiences where unique for sakura, the sakura itself was unique as well. This was the only place we went too that had so many weeping sakura. You can also easily step off the trail for a moment and try the Kitakata ramen! Be sure to check the sakura dates as much as you can. This year the sakura bloomed a whole three weeks after the expected time!
@ Thanks again. Yes we will certainly give the Kitataka ramen a try. Keep on sharing your wonderful journeys around Japan. It’s our fav destination especially when we get to stay at the ryokans with natural HOTSPRINGS in Spring and early winter.
@@TetsuReid Thank you. Continue to have great videos of your wonderful journeys in Japan. ❤️

It looks like a very interesting place to go, but sad as well that some of the cats are poorly
Too many times I wanted to take a cat I met home! I hope this place can improve in the future. I heard the other cat island is like this as well
@TetsuReid Lucky you didn't have the van, it would have been full of cats. I guess with depopulation it is hard to care for so many cats, especially if they keep having kittens
@@nataliepriddle9909 Yes we noticed some of the cats had been fixed (chipped ears) I feel someone needs to be in charge in tracking this to help. But maybe someone is in charge and working on it! We have no idea how things are run on the island. and yes I named every cat that I met!
@TetsuReid I hope they can make some positive changes so all the cats can be well. Haha, got to name a cat if you see one!
Thank you for this video Reid and Testu, and for explaining about the rules. I love cats, and animals in general, and sometimes I dont know what is actually good for them or not. I want to stop them from being hungry, and if they like playing, they should play. But on the other hand, I also dont want to do anything that will hurt the animals or go against nature. I think that in Japan, a lot of people love animals, but they do things that are not good for animals - like animal cafes (especially when wild animals are concerned) and places like the fox village, where you can pet wild animals like foxes. They dont do it with a bad intention, quite the opposite. But it is harmful to the animals and not natural. In places like the different cat islands, it would be tempting to feed the animals (and again: its well meant), but it shouldnt be done, for different reasons. When playing is involved, with animals like cats, who need stimulation, its a bit different though. .
All that is of course just my opinion. I find it amazing (in a very good way), how most people in Japan respect rules. We could learn so much from Japan in that matter. And please stop appologising Tetsu, you did nothing bad out of intention.
Thank you for this comment! These are all things I’ve thought of too. I’ve stood stunned in front of an owl cafe and shocked at a monkey staring back at me in a pet store. I know there’s no intended harm and it’s a lack of knowledge but as an animal person it’s hard to see! I hope the island can do more for the cats, I think there is a big chance with the amount of tourists to create a better environment for them. I can imagine a local vet, indoor housing, a supervised play area! There’s a lot that can be done here! Thanks for the comment again!
Izu Oshima Island looks really beautiful, untouristy and very special. We dont drive, so have to rely on public transport. Is it possible to visit most of the places you visited by bus (and sometimes a taxi) ? Or would you not bother to go there if your able to rent a car ? Thanks a lot for your answer.
@@swissfoodie3542 Oshima is a very unique spot in Japan! But due to the low population (even with tourists), it’s an area that’s best traveled with a car. Busses are limited in frequency and in location. For example the mountain top dessert is only accessible via car. It’s possible to bike around but only really feasible to do so in the more urban areas. Personally for me (Reid) this is one spot where I would rent a car! Thanks for the comment!
@@TetsuReid Thank you Reid for your answer, much appreciated. As we both dont drive, I think it will be best to not visit Oshima. Because if we are totally limited, its not worth going.
@ I think Oshima is a rare spot in Japan where you need a car! But luckily the majority of Japan you can get by without!
