    Ohhhh! You gave Sextons a good review. Knowing it's a Bushmills product has me very interested. Instead of another Grant's, I'm going to go for a Sextons. Heard great things about Bushmills, just a hair to pricey for me though. This sounds like you enjoyed it! Cheers!

    • @BillMcGirr
      @BillMcGirr 17 часов назад

      Sextons is definitely worth a try. This Bushmill 10 is good. But it’s hard to recommend it at its price point. There’s a lot of good bottles in that range.😊👍🥃

  • @BillMcGirr

    Note… Sextons is a Bushmill product. It is a single malt and aged entirely in Oloroso Sherry casks. No age statement and honestly a better bang for the buck.👍🥃

    Happy new year man. And honestly it's refreshing to see a (RUclipsr) just put their stuff out there not a whole huge bunch of production just talk about what really matters

    • @BillMcGirr
      @BillMcGirr 2 дня назад

      I appreciate it my friend. My girl cringes at my videos.🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣 I love good and sometimes cheap whiskey. RUclips played a big part in learning how to distill. Usually by fancy monetized channels. But some of them are just some rando guy sharing what he knows because he wants to. No care about profit or worry about recognition. It takes a lot of learning and making mistakes to become anything that resembles being a decent moonshiner. It’s not a job, it makes no money… it’s like an infection that haunts you and causes you to come back for more. It’s the most addictive hobby I’ve ever encountered. If I can be a part of one persons journey and learning experience that would be very cool. Some people comment that they don’t even care about making moonshine but just watch because it exists. I can understand that because I do the same thing on RUclips all the time. I’m glad you watched, I hope you enjoyed it and I appreciate it whenever someone takes a moment to look at my cheap unedited rambling videos. All the best to you.😊👍🥃

    Are you democrat and do you talk how and why to discard foreshots to prevent methanol

    • @BillMcGirr
      @BillMcGirr 4 дня назад

      Politics isn’t particularly important or interesting to me. As far as foreshots and heads… a general rule is about 50ml per gallon of mash in the still. Methanol is always among the first compounds to vaporize. So those are easy to discard. Cuts are always sensory based… meaning smell and taste. But 50ml per gallon of mash is a safe starting point. It will also depend on what your mash is made of. Grain or fruit etc…. Use your senses… you’ll know what is good or bad.👍🥃

    I like a wheated whiskey as well. For the price, I like Makers Mark. They make a good bottle! This whiskey here looks amazing! I don't think I could find this. I can't even find regular Buffalo Trace. Our state stores are big too! Cheers!

    • @BillMcGirr
      @BillMcGirr 8 дней назад

      My state has independent liquor stores. And you can’t own a chain. Only one store. So you get to know the owner and or manager which is cool. But there’s no price controls either. So price gouging can be a thing. Or they like to make you buy allocated stuff in a bundle. Meaning you have to buy some whiskey you don’t want to get the one you do want.🤣🤣🤣 My local store doesn’t get it often but they’re usually pretty good about selling it at retail. But I don’t buy expensive bottles often.👍🥃

    • @BillMcGirr
      @BillMcGirr 8 дней назад

      Before I got the 2 copper heads… I had a long stainless 3” column. I had to pack the column with copper mesh and coils to get the sulfates out of the distillate. With the copper heads I don’t need to do that anymore. And they create more natural reflux which is also a good thing. Normally I wouldn’t have the sight glass on the still… but I might start using them more. It creates a cool visual.😊 The sight glasses are really for putting copper bubble plates in to make highly pure alcohol like vodka. I have 4 of them but I never make vodka so they don’t get much use.

      No absolutely not. Maybe rewatch. Although my dumb ass has been known to misspeak. Definitely 80-85 proof. Before re distillation. There is almost zero chance of a vapor leak in my setup. But one must always be careful and prudent. I obviously have tri clamps 🗜️ which leak nothing. But if you have a copper setup and use paste to seal your connections… There is an absolute chance of vapor leakage. Be safe at all times. Never take any chances. I certainly do not. this is why June in my favorite month. i have a big ass black berry patch in my back yard and a few mulberry trees. i do the same thing...soak them til they're white but never thought about juicing them. we usually just eat the berries....lol i'm making Christmas cheer today..apple pie shine. yes it's sickening sweet but got to keep the ladies happy.

    • @BillMcGirr
      @BillMcGirr 16 дней назад

      I used to make apple pie shine every year. Sometimes out of apple brandy white dog. It’s always a hit. I really should make another batch. It’s been a couple of years. I have a 15 gallon barrel to fill. And since I only double distill… it’s taking up all my time and my shine.🤣🤣🤣 I wish I had some fruit bushes around I could take advantage of. I do have a juniper tree in my backyard… but it hasn’t given any berries lately. I’d really like to make a gin out of its berries someday. I think this year I’m going to make an effort to see if there’s some local farms that grow either unique corn or fruits that I can make a deal with. It’s worth a try.😊👍🥃

    Solid advice here! Worst hangovers are from those sugary mixed drinks. Your fruitshine looks incredible! Have you had any luck with sour green apples? I like the fact you use barrels. That's the best way. Worst part is waiting for it to mature. Cheers!

    • @BillMcGirr
      @BillMcGirr 16 дней назад

      I’ve made apple pie shine. But unless you make an apple brandy first… It doesn’t really have much to do with apples proper. It’s just equal parts apple juice and cider. Cinnamon sticks, cloves and perhaps nutmeg. You simmer it down to thicken it up a bit and mix it with your shine to the proof you’re looking for. I’ll throw an apple slice in the jar for appearance but it doesn’t really add to the flavor. It’s really good and everyone loves it… but you can see there’s not a lot of actual apples involved. Unless you make an apple brandy white dog. But honestly the apple flavor doesn’t really come through a whole lot.🤷‍♂️ 👍🥃

    What I could find out.🤷‍♂️ Slane Irish Whiskey is aged for a minimum of three years in a triple-cask system: First fill Ex-Bourbon: Aged for 20 months Virgin oak: Aged for 20 months in a medium char barrel Oloroso Sherry: Aged for 24 months in butts made from French and Spanish oak The three-cask system gives Slane its signature flavor profile, which includes notes of vanilla, charred oak, raisin, spice, butterscotch, and fruit. Slane Irish Whiskey is named after Slane Castle, where the Scottish Conyngham family settled in Ireland in 1611. The American spirits company Brown-Forman launched Slane Irish Whiskey in 2015.

So these bottles tend to disappear quickly.🙄🤣🤣🤣 It’s probably why I started trying cheaper whiskeys. I might have mentioned that Buffalo Trace is just fine. Nothing spectacular but a good mild smooth bourbon. Especially if you can get it around $30 or less. It’s worth a try if you can find it. (Good luck) If you find Eagle rare for around $40 definitely pick that up.👍🥃

I just try to get by with the basics at the most economical cost. I’d love to pick up a gin basket or vapor chamber at some point to be able to get stuff in the vapor path to enhance flavors. Perhaps next year.🤷‍♂️ Good stuff. Best wishes bro.👍🥃

    I've tried for years to buy a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Our State Store gets 20-30 bottles deliveried every Thursday at 10am. The cashier says one guy comes in and buys almost every bottle. By time I get there they are sold out. Honestly, your review makes it seem like I'm not missing out. Down here they are getting close to $40 a bottle. I'd like to try it, but won't go out of my way to buy it. Cheers brother!

      At $40 I’d probably pass. I can get Eagle rare occasionally around here for that price. Eagle rare is a far better bourbon for the money. Even though it’s the same mash bill. It’s a little older… 10 years and stored higher in the Rick house. Buffalo Trace is a good bourbon for people who don’t want complex flavors or high proof. It’s smooth enough for sure but very basic. Friends who aren’t whisky guys like it because it’s accessible and not off putting. $31-32 is the most I’d ever pay for it… And that’s a little pricey honestly. Best wishes my man.👍🥃

      The vile yellow fruit mash is in a 5 gallon barrel. I had enough leftover to share with some friends who were nice enough to share back some things with me.👍 This is a standard corn, malted barley and wheat mash that I put together in about 3 hours. Minus heating the water up to temperature. I used ice to cool it down between to conversion points. I have a 15 gallon barrel to fill next so there’s no time to spare between distillation and fermentation for the next distillation. I wish there was a little more time for making a proper video. But I had a rare evening to take my girl out to dinner. So I had to clean myself up and play good boy for a while.🙄🤣🤣🤣 It was worth the effort. Hope you had a great Thanksgiving. Best wishes.🫡👍🥃

      I’ve been thinking about something like a glycol chiller if I could find one at a reasonable price. The goal is really to get the distillate out of the still around 65 degrees. So the water temperature isn’t super important but obviously emptying the water and keeping it iced is a pain in the ass. I also might just get a connection to the sink faucet. And control the flow with a needle valve. I don’t really need to pump the volume of water through the system that my pump puts out. But I have 2 places that I can get the ice for free… And of course that’s a solid price.🤣🤣🤣 At one time I was spending around $60 per run on ice… especially in the summer months. That wasn’t working. There are options. I just haven’t jumped at any yet. When I do a stripping run and run it hot and fast to strip the alcohol out I’m going through 8-9…5 gallon buckets full of ice each run. Keeping it cool is a challenge to say the least. Good stuff. Best wishes.👍🥃

      @@BillMcGirr keep it cheap and simple. all your trying to do is condense it faster. You could try a lower boiling wattage.

    • @BillMcGirr
      @BillMcGirr Месяц назад

      No… all I’m trying to do is balance the cooling water and the distillate temperature at 65* Fahrenheit. Obviously I’m keeping it cheap. The ice is free. The goal is to keep both at a consistent 65* Fahrenheit as efficiently as possible. With as little work as possible. Almost everything in distillation occurs at SPECIFIC TEMPERATURES. Not always. But almost always. Chemical reactions are predictable. And chemical reaction occur when certain ingredients react at specific temperatures. Obviously an artist is allowed to indulge in his predilection because it is his freedom. But leaving the boundaries of known science to indulge one’s fancy’s is to do so at the risk of a known result that is acceptable. I do as I see fit… But I never disrespect the acceptable limits of the highest achievable quality standards. I’ve invested far too much time to accept anything less. Cheers.👍🥃

    You have a beautiful setup there 😁. Years ago I worked in a plant that made foundry resins. I basically ran a 8 to 11 thousand gallon still. When I started that job my first thought was DAM I COULD MAKE A HELL OF A BATCH IN THIS THING 😁😁😁. There was 4 " reactors " that's what they called them 😄. I had to control the condenser temperature with a 4 inch valve. The chemicals we used were extremely toxic , and cooking temperatures were up to 350° to 450° we cooked formaldehyde and phenol with a few other nasty things. I would give anything to be able to prefect a batch of shine 😁

      Many moons ago I was blessed with a couple of shots of shine that was tasteless and orderless and went down smooth as silk. I was sitting in the barracks with a hangover that would put a bull elephant down. A friend walks over and says take a shot of this. I gagged at the thought of any alcohol. He shoved a glass under my nose and it didn't smell which got my attention because a little hair of the dog will cure what ails ya 🤣. I thought what the hell ( kill or cure ) over the lips and across the gums look out belly here it comes. It went down like water and then I got this warm feeling from my belly up and 15 seconds later I had no hangover at all. Of course he wouldn't sell me even a pint. That was his private stock 😁😁😁.. @ It really concentrated the flavors at certain points in the run. Some flavors were more prominent at different times. I just took a swig of a jar I proofed down to 120 proof. It’s a fruit shine. The nose is pleasant but not remarkable. The taste still reminds me of the inside of a banana peel but hyper sweet. It would probably be more subtle if I proof it down again to 90-100 proof. But this was never supposed to be a straight shine. Grain is best for that. It was all about the barrel. Honestly everything about distillation is a bit of a crap shoot. You do your best… using quality ingredients and over time you find out what works… or doesn’t. A barrel can make something average and bring out something special. If you go to any major distillery and taste their white dog un aged shine… It’s probably unremarkable. The real magic happens in the right barrel. And so I’ll wait. I like shine… and I’ve made a shit ton of it. But I like refined distillate much better. I’m sure over time I’ll update the progress of this project. I appreciate the back and forth bro. You probably comment the most on my videos. If you’re ever in the Northeast area let me know. Good stuff bro.💪👍🥃

      @@BillMcGirr yeah I'm fascinated by the whole process. I've watched those shows on TV that show Hillbillies out in the forest trying to make moonshine. Never understood why you would go through all that trouble out in the woods to try to do it that way, versus a pro set up like yours, indoors, and all modern materials, gauges, electricity, and thermometers. The Hillbillies are out dodging the law, trying to find a creek, and patching leaks with oatmeal 😂! You're like Einstein compared to them. My neighbor made homemade wine, which wasn't good but he enjoyed the process. Another buddy makes beer, tastes good but not worth the hassle. You have to be really smart to make liquor. I think that would be fun. Problems I see is you need a lot of knowledge, space, could burn your house down, and TIME! Time not only to do it, but years of waiting for it to mature in the barrel. Good stuff Bill! Yeah I'm stuck in SE PA so I am always in the NE. Cheers!

When I saw how empty that bottle was, I thought either you cleaned your paint brushes with it, or actually drank it! Totally spot on review Bill. It's a great pour, and for under $20, I mean what can you buy for $18 anymore? Give the cashier a $20, and you get change back! EW has definitely fueled a lot of shenanigans at my band practices too 😂! I don't know why, but they have a really good bourbon here. I always add 2 ice cubes for sipping, but can do shots. So glad you took the time to review my recommendation 😎👍!! I think a 7.1 is a good number, and like you said, I've paid more for worse. Two-bar-p-s-i is a nickname/screen name I have because I was big into racing turbocharged cars. Some of the boost pressures I'd run on race gas would be up to 30psi, which = two bars...So that's that 😃🤙 You can call me Pete if you want in the future. Take care Bill 😎🍺👍!
