Looks like it has potential to be a sweet little option for certain trips you want to make Marc. I'm sure you'll figure out a build that will suit your individual needs. I actually enjoy working on those kinds of projects, of course I realize you will have to do it on a shoestring, but it gets my juices flowing when I see a blank slate like that. The simple vent will be just fine since you have it already and if you ever wanted to switch it out for the Max Air the hard work is done after the hole is cut in the roof...Have fun with it!
Hey, Kenny! I've been fussing with it a little today. I think I'll be able to get most of what I talked about done. One thing about having a vent on that small roof, it will impact my ability to get a larger solar panel mounted. I suppose the vent doesn't have to fully open, just cracking it might be good enough. For now I just want to make it work better. Later on I'll spend some money on insulation and some other modifications I have in mind.
@@camplapidary ah, that's true I hadn't thought about fitting some panels up there. well it will be interesting seeing what you do with it, even if it's just getting it started and functional to sleep in it.
I can't wait to see the finished product looks like. I know you put a lot of thought and planning into doing this. Customizing it to fit your specific needs is awesome!
First a temporary design, then perhaps something better built later on. Eventually I have plans to do a popout on the passenger side. I'd like to be able to sleep sideways in it.
@@camplapidary that would be totally awesome! Turn a small footprint into a large comfortable Cargo Trailer that is compact to pull! Genius!
One thing I have seen on campers that I like is a compartment accessable from the outside for a pull out kitchen area or a fold down/up counter. Also a box on the hitch frame for more storage options?
Good morning, Patricia! There definitely are some possibilities here. Another to consider is a stove shelf attached to the door, I've seen that a few times on others builds.
Good 😊❤
Thanks 😄
Awesome breakfast in an awesome setting! Can't beat that at all!
I wish I was having this breakfast in some wild spot today. Perhaps next week! :D
@@camplapidary it is really hard to ignore the want of being out in nature doing what you love! I have been waiting for the water level to go down in the creek where I love to hunt. Rain keeps raising it and it covers all the rocks there. The creek is connected to Lake Cumberland and the dam control allows it to raise the water level in all the contributaries to the lake. So we wait lol.
@@patriciabock4299 The time will come.
Hi😊
Got to get out there!
Anyone anywhere!
Any material
Any time!
It's a good spot. Really hot out there at the moment I bet. I'd need 2 more months, maybe early September or so if it's cool enough.
Hi😊
Thank you so much for making this video. I followed along and was able to replace my control board with zero issues. $45 dollars instead of a whole new saw. Hopefully it will keep running for another 14 years!
That's great news! :D Mine is still working fine. Gonna fire it up tomorrow perhaps.
Man I wondering where you were. lol maybe should put the nose of truck into the wind if you can. Now let’s see some geodes 😂😂😂 the wind 💨 get kicking out west for sure.
The door on the trailer is easier to access from the driver's side, that's why it's aimed that way. I was supposed to make this video a week ago, but I got the lazy summer vibe going... :D I'm kicking myself for not adding some geode footage in the last video, Digging the Pits. Would have made it 10x better. Next video is an afternoon walkabout, we'll see some stones for sure.
Hi😊
A windy day camping beats a good day working anytime. Hope you're doing well Marc.
One time, before I got the canvas tents, my tent blew into the lake as I was cooking dinner! I had a choice to save the food or the tent. I chose the food. :D
I've been doing good, Kenny. Planning a trip to Jeffery City, Wyoming. For the Jade Fest going on August 9th weekend. Should be a fun trip.
Hi😊
Topaz!
Dig!
Dig dig dig!
I grew up with a perculator on the stove. Best way to brew a great cup of coffee! I don't think I have ever timed mine, always went by how it smelled lol.
Why does it take more coffee compared to a drip machine? Or am I just not letting it perc long enough? I do get good coffee if I put 25% extra grounds.
@@camplapidary It is strange how automatic drip perculators work. They actually heat the water before going through the grounds. With perculators the water starts flowing over the grounds before it reaches the maxime heat temperature. So it is a slower process of extracting the flavor out of the grounds. Allowing the perculator to operate longer gets that maxime heated water flowing over the grounds. Test it out and see if it makes a difference with less grounds.
I have tried! Nobody wants to watch me pour a cup of weak brew! :D lol. And I don't want to drink it either! I do drink it and I'm glad to have it, but... I mean I've let it go for up to 30 minutes of solid percolating. I have seen that turning up the heat to very high does help a little. I watch the glass knob for color. Over and over I find that it just takes more grounds to get the same flavor as a drip or french press. Just seems weird to me.
@@camplapidary My drip takes 3 scoops my camp pot takes 4 lol. You are right it uses more and that does not make sense!
@@patriciabock4299 The one thing I really like about the percolator is the aesthetic for the videos. The steam rising, the happy morning sounds of the percolating. Just makes for good video in my opinion. If it costs a bit more in coffee grounds to have it, so be it. Have you ever tried those moka pots, I think they're called?
Thank you for sharing that! Great information and technique to know for sure! Pinging the blade beats buying them!
It really is the best way. :D
I certainly am enjoying your build. Good job!
Awesome, thank you! :D
Just watching this now…wow such hard work to find anything… I loved how you looked after Gypsy first before yourself…it speaks volumes about you…glad I found your channel…
I'm glad you found my channel as well, Sue! :D
Could just be they’re to deep or to many people have been there.unfortunately when people are allowed to do digs like this they usually take advantage of it.
I believe there are plenty of geode rocks out there. Digging through the loose dirt is not the way to find them though. I just wanted to see for myself.
Looks like a really peaceful way to spend a few days, that’s big time valuable in my opinion. Thanks for sharing, awesome video. ✝️🇺🇸🤙🏻
Thanks, Appalachian Underground!
I have a 6x8 on order , hopefully it will be ready this week to pick up, I ordered it with rear barn doors, a window in the side door and a 7’ ceiling. Looking forward to starting work on the conversion… your channel will definitely be useful for ideas…thanks again and I subscribed today ✝️🇺🇸🤙🏻
Thank you! Always exciting to do something new. Enjoy your build and happy camping!
That is some hard work but once you start finding them you have a real treasure! I saw that Gypsy had the right idea of getting in the shade in a dug out spot, the ground was cooler for her too! She is a genius!
There's a little crusty top to the dirt here. After that the digging is super easy. I just don't think that digging in the loose dirt is the best way to find good material. I need to find the layer that has the geodes, but I need that layer to be within a foot or three from the surface.
Ok I finally closed my mouth lol. The reds in those coral are just wow! I can see why you would venture up such a rough trail to dig that up! Just beautiful!
I think the Horn Coral from this location is world class material. I've not ever seen better! :D
@@camplapidary I have to agree with that! I found a large cluster of horn coral here that I had never seen before. I had always seen single horns and this was a large cluster. of them. Probably a small sphere of them would be more accurate, but looks big to me lol.
Sky, water and mountain peaks everywhere you look! Amazing drone footage for sure. I am still amazed at the bare mountains there. Ours are so tree covered you can hardly see rock formations on them lol.
I've tried rockhounding in the forests, I can't seem to find anything because there's too much vegetation! I do much prefer the desert for hounding!
@@camplapidary around here it is a lot better to walk the creeks. Really cool during the hot weather. I usually go barefoot. I did buy some muck boots for when the it gets colder. I can find a lot of tree fossils and coral. Every once and a while you can find some plant fossils in shale layers. Biggest finds is huge Geods that have great crystal pockets but with iron staining that has to be treated to remove it. Most of the Geods are like 12 to 16 inches across. They are very bumpy on the outside and smooth. Use to paint them as Santa Claus heads because the bumps turned into perfect curls for his beard lol.
I love the wildflowers! The blue one got my attention!
Truly rough terrain! Gypsy sure does ride well and seems to enjoy it very much lol.
We had a few good trips on the bike. I remember the first time, there were cows. We came around a corner and she seen them, jumped off the bike and charged the cows. She was quite younger at that point. Full of herself. She did pull up short once she got near the large cows and returned when I called her. Good times! :D
@@camplapidary lol a real cow wrangler! I can imagine you stopping the bike really quick, that would have thrown me for a heart wrenching loop!
It is totally amazing that people actually leave equipment like that just sitting out in the wild! That is a bulldozer with metal tracks on it. Just wow!
Things been there since it made the road, and probably dug up the hilltop where the fossils are.
@@camplapidary I wonder if the owner will ever come back for it? I would never leave that cool of a bulldozer just sitting out there lol.
Now I don't know anything about anything, but the only way I can think that it will get off the mountain is under it's own power. I don't think a large truck and trailer can do that road.
@@camplapidary yes that bulldozer would have to exit on it's own power! Maybe the reason it has been abandoned. Shame i would still have tried to get it off the mountain lol. I love bulldozers! Got to drive one when i was in the Air Force lol.
Learning new technology is so much fun! I wondered how the drones followd vehicles in videos - I will never wonder about that again lol.
Always nice to have a pilot around to fly for you. If not, some drones will track an object. And then there are programs you can use to tell the drone to fly a preset programable path.
@@camplapidary That is amazing of course i thought it was amazing when my oldest brought her first desk top into my house lol. I paid to put that online and we had a lot of fun with AOl chat lol. The advancements in technology is fantastic! Love it!
Every thing has a much more intense flavor when enjoyed outside with views like you experienced in this video!
I just get so hungry out there. Carrying enough food and water on the bike can become an issue.
@@camplapidary there are some good MRIs but most of those take water, so you would be replacing one weight and space for more water weight and space. Planning ahead for meals takes a lot of knowledge of packing in what you need for a trip like that! Great Job on that Marc!
Water is easier to carry than foods that require refrigeration. I just can't afford those fancy freeze dried or prepackaged food items. I experimented with frozen homemade soup this last moto trip. Worked out good for a 1 night trip.
@@camplapidary if you can find a military surplus store you might be able to pick up some MRIs at a reasonable price.
Gypsy wanted a blueberry lol
She used to eat all kinds of foods. Nowadays if it's not a choice piece of meat, She'll have none of it.
@@camplapidary I can understand that! The older we get the more protein we want lol. Plus it has a lot to do with taste!
Last night she had half of my chicken breast! Half! :D
@@camplapidary she knows that you know how to fix the best chicken lol
Costco Rotissery chicken for the win!
That first hole you dug wasn't a total waste as it served a nice little shady den for poopers.. I don't know a lot about rocks yet, I've always liked looking at them and bugs and birds and plants.. but I'm learning little by little thanks to you. I enjoyed the footage.
In the past I have often needed to have 2 digging holes side by side. One for Gypsy to lay in, and one for me to dig. :D
That was an eventful ride! I am glad that you and Gypsy were not injured! I know it was a slow lay down! But will still get a heart jumping in your chest!
I had to cut out all the cussing. Picking up a fully loaded bike will also get the blood pumping! :D
@@camplapidary I have to say I was wondering where all the colorful commentary on that was lol. It is no easy thing to pick a fully loaded bike up off the ground. I know you were not traveling that fast and I was hoping the bike did not land on a leg! or Gypsy! Thank goodness it was a small incident that did not result in serious injury! I have been dumped like that before and I too got back up and got back on. (I was not the driver I have never driven one but I love riding on them!)
That is what I call one sweet ride!
It's a classic for sure!
Amazing history there! May be revived if they ever get the mercury driven drive for space vehicles fine tuned!
Interesting!
Love the whispy feathery flowers! So pretty. The pink/purple flowers with the leaf vine remind me of morning glories or trumpet flowers. The desert always has amazing plants!
Real nice setup! Just one question..do you have trouble with moisture from cooking on your electronics with the vent fan there?
Thank you, Crow! No trouble from moisture while cooking. I always run the vent fan at least on low while I have the stove going. When it's extra cold outside and warm inside the trailer, I'll get condensation on the windows and any other exposed cold metal. But that's about it for moisture problems.
I would go fishing with your family! They have the right idea, fishing and beer! You are so lucky to have such a wonderful family! Loved the purple sage flowers they were very beautiful. So amazing to how much life is in desert areas! That darker green Turquoise was absolutely a keeper! Wish you could have found a huge piece of that! Maybe next time!
Nothing wrong with fishing and beer! I did eventually find a source location for the turquoise in this area. But that is another episode! I still see that little piece of green from time to time, it's out in the driveway somewhere.
@@camplapidary If I ever find your driveway I will rescue it lol. Can't wait to see an episode on the turquoise in that area!
Your walk abouts are always the best! Real time rockhounding and so many beautiful plants. I had to ooh and ahhh at the orange flower and the blue and white one! Turquoise is probably one of my favorite stones for jewelry. I have earrings from Peru and a set from Israel. Plus a ring from the southwest. Turquoise is unique to where it comes from and will always give away the location as to the color and other materials that can be seen in it! I love the differences in it and I am always fascinated by the difference in the coloration! The hills to the south are very different looking from their formation. Would love to see them up close!
Thanks, Patricia! I like turquoise as well, looks good and is easy to cut and polish. Not overly difficult to make a sale with it too! Though it can be difficult to acquire rough material at a cost that is profitable for me to purchase. I made a ton of cabs using the composite turquoises from the Kingman Mine people. I used to be able to get that material at a reasonable cost, but even that has gone up so much.
@@camplapidary My mom was wanting a turquoise necklace. I had to tell her the cost is way more than I could afford right now. It has gone up so much. I guess it is getting rare. May need to source it in India or Israel. Africa is also a good place to find sources for it. Just takes longer to get it.
Nice one…loved walking the beds with you and Gypsy! Looking forward to seeing your finds! Thanking you for sharing!
It's my pleasure to share, Sue. Thank you for watching! :D
I love the dugway thundereggs! And they are technically thundereggs and not geodes. Thundereggs must have a rhyolite skin around them. Geodes aren't surrounded by rhyolite. They can be any other type of rock. So even though they aren't solid, they are thundereggs, and not geodes. And of all the types of thundereggs, Dugways are my favorite kind! The chalcedony is UV reactive and it glows a pretty intense green! Which is usually a sign of minor radioactivity. And being dugway is in Utah, it might be or some other element that makes it glow that intense green. I would be so happy to just walk around and pick stuff up. I love the layers of rhyolite that's out there! A big chunk of that which can be sliced and cabbed would be so pretty! And it reminds me of the moon or some other planet out there. The landscape and the vastness of it and nobody around you! Just rock everywhere! So pretty! Thanks Marc, for putting up this video for us. It's wonderful! ❤
These geode beds were one of the first places I went once I got the notion of lapidary and rockhounding. I collected many big pieces of the banded rhyolite as that is what really caught my eye at the time. Sliced it up and started learning to make cabochons. I made so many rounds from that rhyolite, like little gas giant planets they looked! I still have a few of those old cabs knocking around, I'll have to pull them out and show in a video. Won't be long I'm sure.. Concerning geodes vs thundereggs, here is my personal weird take on it. I'm sure you are correct... It's just that I don't really care for the word "thunderegg". From Wikipedia: Legend. Native American legend reportedly considers the rocks to be the eggs of the thunderbirds which occupied Mount Hood and Mount Jefferson. Thunder Spirits on the mountains hurled the "eggs" at each other. Now certainly we all know that this legend has no truth to it. So why call them that? Nobody wants to call them Lithophysa either, at least I don't. So, geode it is! Told you it was a weird take.. :D
@@camplapidary everybody has their own personal preference, for calling them what they want. I just differentiate them by the volcanics or not. Thundereggs being volcanics because they are born in rhyolite, or geodes which are not. And geodes will usually have a crystal pocket in them, where thundereggs will have chalcedony whether completely solid or not. They may also grow crystals on the chalcedony pockets but the chalcedony is the difference and the rhyolite crust. Most ck then geodes because they arent solid. But that isn't the defining characteristic. Whether an egg born from the thunderbird or a lovely rock born from a volcano, I use the textbook description to differentiate the two. That way I know what to expect inside too. And I would very much like to see your rhyolite cabs! Rhyolite can be so beautiful! Sometimes, more beautiful than the eggs themselves! Like in the lily pad thunderegg beds! There is huge chunks of rhyolite that have just a bunch of tiny eggs in it, that when sliced is just gorgeous! It's more popular than the eggs themselves!
"lily pad thunderegg", I know I've seen this material. I might even have some, can't remember. I have photos of every cabochon I ever made and sold. But the old photos are on my old computer which is disconnected and put away. Might have to power it up and find those photos!
Although I know your dog's a Heinz 57, she reminds me of an mini Afghan Hound a bit now. Such good lil dog. Good work Marc.
Dugway geode beds are on my bucket list of places I want to go. I recently checked off a couple places going to the Yellowstone and bear canyon. You just put this video out but filmed it almost 3 yrs ago? You been holding out on us? Lol.
I noticed you getting to go some cool places, J. That Bear Canyon looked quite inviting to me! While these recordings might be old, I imagine a morning walkabout at the Dugway Geode Beds would look much the same today and or tomorrow as it did 3 years ago. Some places are timeless like that. :D
@@camplapidary yeah I liked watching and seeing an overall view. Helps for when go out if ever. Some of the broken ones you picked up I would have kept. Lol. Bear canyon was great for my first time going. I would love to go back and camp so I could have more time and not feel rushed on others time. There was so much awesome stuff just laying around. I think many places warrant 2-3 trips at least to really get to learning them. Just like you said.
Looks like a great place for a rock hunt
It is! A great place to find solitude as well. :D
@@camplapidary I could use some of that these days.
A Tuesday walk about in the Dugway Geode Beds would be a good day even on another day! Nothing boring about these walk abouts! You are giving us the experience of being there ahead of visits! Knowing what to expect is half the battle won! Thank you so much for sharing such wonderful experiences!
I would follow that cool beetle it was finding some very interesting rocks!
I could make an entire video following that beetle around. Serious. :D
@@camplapidary It needs a little go pro camera on it's back :D Would be a very interesting video for sure!
I would hang that sunrise on my wall! I would have to oil paint it first hehe!
Hey! You joined my channel, Patricia! WooHoo! A new hero to add to the Channel Benefactors Scroll!
@@camplapidary It is great being a member of your channel! I love the videos so much! You got the travel channel beat all to pieces lol. Rockhounding, Camping and lapidary work no one else can match that!
How shall I name thee in the Hero's Roll? Patricia Bock? Patricia B.? P.B.? PBNJ? :D Or something else?
@@camplapidary I have no preference lol. I will let you chose! I usually go by my full name I started that when I had to make a RUclips account for a college class I took on Adobe Flash Movie creation. All of our homework was posted on RUclips. I made straight As in that class, it was fun!
I had all but given up on my own build out and had almost quit watching these vids for ideas.... boy am I glad I caught this one! Phenomenal job, Sir! My trailer has become something of a dump hauler, as of late, as I have become the almost sole caretaker of a hoard and it's maker. I originally bought it to be a camper though and I hope to finish up my little 5 x 8 in the far future (at this point). This was very inspiring and I did already get the insulation done with my uncle's help so.... progress IS progress! Thanks again for sharing.
Good luck, Maya! Your 5x8 will wait patiently for you. It'll be there when you have the time and or inclination to get it done. Thanks for watching! :D
Sounds good to mix green sauce and sour cream for a salad dressing! Maybe it would even be good enough to market? Gypsy is so patient while waiting for her bites!
If I remember correctly, I just used the green sauce. I really should have tried adding the sour cream, I bet it would have been fine and dandy! :D
@@camplapidary works great with hidden valley ranch mix lol.
Marc you are an expert camper! You always find the best sites! Gypsy is in her environment! I noticed she really checked out the area while you were setting the camp up lol. She is the most adorable fur baby! You do have a really nice singing voice! Would not mind you singing the entire song!
I don't feel like an expert at anything! lol. I think that the singing will be kept at a minimum. I don't want to torture the other viewers.. :D
@@camplapidary nope you are a very seasoned, expert camper, even if you forget the coffee lol. As for your singing it is far better than some that get recording contracts today! No torture there!
Are there agates on Southern California beaches? I find dozens of agates here in NorCal.
I don't really know.. This is about the only beach I've looked at with a rockhounders eye. I wish I lived closer to go more often. :D
Nice video…I love the time lapse footage…it looks pretty barren there!
Thanks, Sue! The ground here is pretty tore up from decades of digging. This site was once a mineral claim, and they used heavy equipment to get these big pits. Nowadays it's all open to the public (no claims allowed) but the state or county sends equipment in occasionally to freshen up the pits. Once you get away from this digging area the desert looks pretty normal. Though some might still consider it to be barren.
Veteran move, observing the ground and where you put your camp. Made that mistake when I was like 19 backpacking the wind River range. Put my tent down in this nice little flat spot between rocks and it rained hard that night and it turned into a lake so I had to move in the middle of the night in a rainstorm.... Total rookie mistake. Never again. Question - how come you waited so long to produce this series of videos from 2021? Wish I had material like that in the can while I have to work all summer and into the fall here.
One more good thing about cargo trailer camping vs tent camping is that you don't have to worry so much about a small river through camp, being off the ground an all. lol. I have at least 1 full year of backup video material sitting on hard drives here. Maybe more. If I don't put out the videos on a regular basis and quickly, I get backed up. I can spend a month, filming and then editing the individual videos from a 4 day trip. Someday when I'm really old, when I can no longer go out like this. I want to be able to pull from this video library and continue to make new videos. And since I keep all the footage I record (within reason), I could re-edit some old series to give them new life as well. Thanks for watching, Kenny! :D
Is it a struggle to pull? What kind of mileage do you get in tow?
Is it a struggle to pull? I don't feel like it is. Though I have read enough online conversations to know that many would disagree. Going up the worst grades I'm as slow as a loaded semi. People who would chafe at doing 20 to 25 miles an hour uphill probably would call it a struggle. Mileage in Tow? Honestly I have never bothered with finding my exact mileage doing anything. But, I have owned this truck for many years. Factory mileage was supposed to be some 20 to 22 average. I don't think I ever got that good as I had the ladder rack from the first week. Good average mileage is about 18 to 20. Bad mileage might be 15 (uphill, nasty headwind..). Towing my 6x10 loaded for camping, I think 10 to 12 average? If I plan for gas stops, I plan on 10mpg.
