He keeps on saying "you meet someone in a bar and...". Doesn't he realise epileptics don't spend their lives in bars because they're banned from mixing alcohol and meds?

When I go abroad, I've managed to convince my doctor give me scripts early. I then split up my meds: purse, bag, suitcase, friends have some too. Teach your kids how to research their options for when things out of plan. ❤

Hi. I somehow disagree with Dr. Manuel Toledo. I am from São Paulo, Brazil and here we have all the AEDs options available in Europe and US. Being also a European citizen (French and German) and having lived in Europe and having family there, I tell you that for those with good private health insurance in Brazil, the service here is far better than the one provided in many countries of Europe, such as the Netherlands, France and Portugal. In São Paulo, we have Albert Einstein Hospital and Sirio Libanês Hospital references in Latin America. For example, Albert Einstein Hospital has been ranked as the best hospital in Latin America and the 28th best in the world according to a recent Newsweek ranking. So, if you wish to travel to Brazil, do not worry in case you need good medical assistance.

I was chatting to my parents yesterday and my sister had an accident there with a caravan door cutting her finger off but they said it was so hard finding a hospital open to help. Luckily they found one in the end that would help her despite them supposed to be closing

I am very sorry to hear that about your sister. In which city did that happen to your sister? Brazil is a huge country like Australia and US. For those spending some days in a desert beach or small town, the medical assistance is just public and for sure limited But in large cities such as São Paulo, Brasília (the capital), Curitiba, Florianópolis, Rio de Janeiro and many others you are safe. I for example had an accident as a child in the town of my grandfather In France. It was a Sunday, the doctor over there had already many glasses of wine, giving me medication that has put me into coma, being this transferred to a hospital of a larger city. I stayed one week in comma. This has actually been the cause of my epilepsy. And all that happened in France and not in Brazil!!!!

Well, research on average, from lab to patient takes about 10 years. And only a small percentage are approved for use in humans. Let's hope that this treatment gets through all the trials and tribulations!

Great interview, very informative. I've been taking Epilim for 50 years, no one has discussed side effects. I'm researching meds as my Epilim levels have become toxic. I've been on Keppra for the last couple of years but am weaning off due to side effects.

Hey, hang on. I was Epilim for twelve years and was past childbearing age but it still turned me into a mess. It was my chemist that told me in the end to get off it. He said, "no one is on this crap anymore." See your doctor and get off it. I was shaking too hard to sign for my script. All my hair had fallen out and I'd gained 53 kg more than doubled my weight in nine months. That was thirty years ago and I'm still not right.

I've been on Keppra a short time. No "rage" or emotional outbreaks, but man, it makes me feel like I'm on muscle relaxer 24/7. Doctor wants me to pop 1500mg daily, but if I do that, I'll be a vegatable. I won't be able drive or do my job. Splitting a 750mg pill twice daily I feel it the next day! I hate how it feels!

I’m not surprised to hear this research, but I’m so happy that someone is pursuing the connection between seizures and gut microbiome. My son has had seizures for years and I’ve always thought there was something going on with his gut. He gets constipated and has seizures, or he runs straight to the bathroom after a seizure. Thanks for this video. I hope to see more human trials with fecal transplants.
