No wonder people once thought epileptic seizures were a form of demonic possession
Seizure free two years and counting!!!🎉🎉🎉 if I improve my cognitive skills, could I reduce chance of dementia..... further my new seizure free life? Hope this don't sound stupid.
Congratulations! And no, this doesn’t sound stupid! We recommend that you speak directly to your neurologist or epilepsy nurse and ask them this question - they know you and your case and can give you the best advice!
Any studies or anybody have positive results with keto diet with mesial temporal sclerosis epilepsy ? Even if it’s keto and drug combined?
Great description!
So glad you think so, David! Mona loves the whole PPI thing and we can tell, right?!
@EpilepsySparksInsights the automatic door was a great metaphor.
Very informative thanks!
Thanks for sharing
Our pleasure!
Great video with some interesting food for thought
Glad you enjoyed it, Sydopath! It's wonderful to have researchers linking up with the general public more, plus making new discoveries, right?1
❤
I was going to school to become a pro pilot when I had my first seizure and later diagnosed with epilepsy. It ruined my life and career. I tried doing software engineering in the aerospace industry. Nothing can replace flying. And for the record, software engineering is NOT fun for someone who wanted to fly. Some advice for someone who is the same boat I'm in. If you're trying to figure out what to replace your broken pilot dream with, give yourself plenty of time to think about it. Don't rush into things. Take classes, research different professions, interview professionals in those fields to get an idea of what the daily life is like for that career before you jump into it. Also, don't delay grieving. If you need to live with a family member to care for you while you grieve, do it. And don't beat yourself up if you end up grieving for years. It's been 7 years and I'm still grieving. Also, spending time in nature can help a little bit. I do a lot of hiking and the trees, rocks, flowers, waterfalls, etc is peaceful. I won't lie, nature is not a permanent fix, but it's a nice temporary relief from the grieving and depression. Animals help too. They can really sense your sadness and will give lots of love. Just hang in there. I never stopped wanting to fly too. So hold onto the little things and let people know when you need to talk. Also study different subjects. Math, science, engineering, history, etc. Those topics can be grounding when you're feeling down. Art, music, and meditation can be helpful too. Of course all of these things only bring temporary relief, but it's better than no relief at all.
Thank you so much for sharing, @TheJetsons-v2w. I TOTALLY get where you're coming from. - Torie
I have epilepsy
It was a rollercoaster trying different epilepsy medication over the years. One moment it seemed to be working, next moment i had a seizure
Your posts are always helpful
To reduce memory issues after a temporal lobe resection is cool, right?! What do you think?!
What are your thoughts on Epilepsy caused by Gene NOTCH 3 Chromosome 19; CADASIL? My brother & suffer intractable Tonic/Clonic Seizures, diagnosed at The Cleveland Clinic?
Dr. Kwan: What are your thoughts on Gene NOTCH 3 Chromosome 19; CADASIL. My brother & I were diagnosed at the Cleveland Clinic. We have intractable Tonic/Clonic seizures.
Very informative and helpful video on the subject of cannabis and seizures
Fascinating research, love your shows Torie!!
Thank you Mark! “Fascinating” is the word for the sciences, right?!
Do you think epilepsy ever be cured?
Let’s just hope, Harry!
I always enjoy learning new things from your posts
This would be fantastic! I was lucky enough to qualify for minimally invasive surgery, but not everyone is as fortunate.
Is there Gene Therapy for CADASIL: Cerebral Autosomal Dominant Arteriopathy with Subcortical Infarcts with Leukoencephalopathy -Gene NOTCH 3 Chromosome 19
YES. I look after my elderly wife who has poorly controlled epilepsy. The breakthrough seizures - and other unpleasant symptoms - seem to be partly correlated with constipation. However taking laxatives sems to reduce the effectiveness of her eplepsy meds. So it is quite a problem, on top of all the normal epilepsy issues!
I'm so sorry that you both go through this! I have true empathy for you both!
I have absent generalized seizures. I can stop my seizures I have auras my auras are my hands will shake,my heart start beating fast,I have deja view my legs start jumping. I started taking xcpristart and Cenobamate last night and I had a seizure tonight. Should I what Until it gets in my system more?
I have absent generalized seizures. I have had my seizures for 38 years now. I can stop my seizures I have auras my auras are my hands will shake my heart will start beating fast and my legs start jumping and deja view. I have tried every thing to get my seizures under control I have had epilepsy surgery and a vegal nerve stimulator. But it is hasn't got them under control. I just started taking xcpristart and Cenobamate last night. I had a seizure to night. Do I have to wait until it gets in my system? Should I stop my seizures? Will my seizures get worse in I stop them?
better late than never. i lost one, hopefully not anymore.
Gene therapy clinical trials are going on for Lafora body disease?
They may, in the future.
What are your realistic hopes for the coming years when it comes to epilepsy therapies?!
Idk why but I’ve treated my gut and my seizures haven’t showed up in 9 weeks
Gosh. How do you mean “treated”?
How? Plz need more inputs…
I had this for my pea sized HH when I was 26 and it sadly did nothing. My epilepsy is to far into the brain to have any surgery done. On a positive note I felt no pain other than them putting the head frame on 😂
Thank you for the information. It sounds interesting!
Awesome! How I'd love to have this done!
Dear Tory, this was a phenomenal interview! I am an adult with TLE (diagnosed a few years ago), living in the European Union. Could you recommend a hospital/clinic in the EU where they do this procedure? Any estimate of the overall cost for it? Thank you so much!
Im so glad that you enjoyed it! I can’t recommend a specific place I’m afraid. If I were I looking though, I might search using “adult tle laser ablation europe” - just an idea! Good luck!
Only epilim worked for me but I won't live with that drug. I'd rather live with the fits.
You don't send rats and mice to school and certainly not to uni.
Drug companies are too fond of changing the colour, adding or removing one ingredient to a drug, putting it back on the market with a new name and charging twice the price for something that never worked in the first place. It's all just a rip-off.
Thanks Torie, for such a wonderful explanation!
You're so welcome David! I’m so glad that it was helpful!
I had my left temporal lobe epilepsy surgery in 2016
How well did it go? Are you seizures free now?
Thank you for sharing your helpful posts
Interesting!
It’s all about the individual. I could not agree more. Treat the human being infront of you. Guidelines are only guidelines. They are not absolute rules
Thanks for sharing your helpful videos
Perhaps it’s about Glucose and the brain .
Problem with “epilepsy” is that it is a general term that covers a range of conditions, symptoms and triggers. It’s a bit like saying - I had “backache” and found a cure - after 2 weeks on my new firm mattress, it’s cured, so everybody with back pain should try it. I’ve got temporal lobe epilepsy, diagnosed 7 years ago at the age of 55. Keppra helps but hasn’t got rid of the absence moments, and was having 2-3 per week. I tried keto and it got worse. A GP doctor wondered if low blood sugar had caused the deterioration, so I came off keto and now eat more sugar foods - little but often. That has reduced my absence seizures to only 2 in six months. Horses for courses 👍
Totally agree with the term “epilepsy” being so broad!
@@EpilepsySparksInsights Thanks for responding. My point however doesn’t detract that for thousands of people, keto is the way to go. I have a work colleague who was on benzodiazepines to control seizures but they made him sleepy. After 3 months on keto he was able to half the benzo dose, giving him better quality of life. If only there was a single cure ☹️
What do you think of weaning people off of anti-seizure medications - and the benefits of the ketogenic diet?
Its always interesting learning new things from your posts about epilepsy treatment. Especially after i had a long seizure last week
Thanks for sharing
Thanks a lot for spreading awareness about this horrific and painful disease
My nephew was very very smart always got high marks, very polite and funny, was very lovely and everyone loved him. He got this disease two years ago, and confirmed by genetic testing, he had all symptoms, he suffered a lot my lovely nephew, he passed away a few days ago 😢😢 May Allah grant him Jannah and grant us and his parents' patience 💔 انا لله وانا اليه راجعون
I’m so sorry for your loss and the experience of your nephew and whole family!
Keppra was horrible to me! Lamotrigine is 1000% better!
I’m so glad you’re getting on better with Lamotrigine!
Hello, I never suffer from epilepsy or had seizures in my life. Till 03/26/2022, I pass out, went to the hospital and they discover I had a cavernous malformation that bleed in my brain and I needed surgery. I had surgery on 03/30/22 and went home on 04/02/22. The doctor prescribed me Keppra (Levetiracetam 750 Ml(2x) a day but by the time I end up taking 1 1/2, then 1500ml. Then they add another medication Zonisamide 100MG, without me having 1 seizure , it was just the fillings, the tingling, heaviness, numbness on my the right of my face, on my right toes, I am a mess. And when I go to get an MRI or an EEG my surgery looks good, no sings of seizures, so everything I feel are side effects of the medications. Medications help, but many times gives feelings that’s mades you feels sick. That’s what Keppra did to me instead of getting better after surgery made me feel things I didn’t have. I am going to the hospital in 2 weeks to remove one of this 2 medications, I do not know which one the doctor will remove, but I hope it’s for me to feel better.
