Reverse Trains: A Cursed Optimization -Factorio 2.0

I have since tested fluid wagons and the performance seems identical to item wagons. I'll share the blueprint for the "race track" test course just as soon as I figure out how to do that. I can even upgrade it with an automatic lap time calculator which I totally should have made before I started.

Does anyone have a blueprint to the train station at the beginning of the video?
All I know is that they fk with my piping on space platforms, regardless of whether they're actually connected or not. Mixing blue and red. And it's very annoying.
speaking of cursed... do locomotives still have the lowest drag coefficient when they're facing backwards?
I do use 3-8 trains together with double headed [ ][ ][ ]<<<>[ ][ ][ ] Both have exactly the sam acceleration for my signalless project

I have a space ship dedicated to making legendary circuits and on it I have a massive amount of space dedicated to weaving pipes of all the required liquids(steam, water, heavy oil, light oil, petroleum) so this is ridiculously helpful!
I will now use 1-2-1 trains with the middle cars being locomotives

Hey, I wanted to thank you for the comprehensive guide. While I found a lot of other guides helpful, yours was overall my favourite reference. I'll say one thing though, and that's I rather preferred Mechan's advice with simply running silent and boosting in through the caustic cloud.

"Traditional 3 wagon trains" may be the most cursed things about this video.
while sure maybe it's slower, i dont necessarily agree that it's not that much different in difficulty. it's a little bit of circuitry, but overall the pipes are a lot simpler to understand and follow since... well there isnt a cacophony of undergrounds going everywhere, crossing over each other, taking up huge amounts of space, and needing to underground in various places to not cross over pipes... because this deliberately wants to cross over pipes lol. and once you have the mechanism in place to actually "soup" your pipe, there isn't much more to understand. "oh, this fluid is going through the pipe now. now that one." not that bad tbh

imo the freight cars look more aerodynamic than the locomotives lol Also, iirc streamlining isn’t really effective until speeds somewhere past 100 mph (for example, look at the UP FEF-3s that were designed to operate up to 120 mph, though it isn’t known if they ever did get up to that speed), though idk how fast Factorio trains are.
If you want to be truly horrified look up how they use pipelines in reality. It's called "batching" and they just start sending the new product down the pipe and use careful timing to divert it into the right storage tanks on the receiving end.
I did this to make a tiling design with 1-4 stations slightly narrower, giving better roboport and pylon efficiency. Didn't think about the air resistance but I don't think fuel efficiency really changes my mind

Very cool video. Thanks for the science! Does atmospheric drag change based on the planet? I could definitely see this setup being used on Fulgora where fuel efficiency is unimportant and compact load/unloading stations are a must.
While going outside, you can also just let yourself be hit by the wave. Sure, you get damaged, but it should be easily survivable (if you aren't majorly damaged). This throws you pretty much completely through the minefield in pretty much an instant. And while we are at it, if you go into silent running while the wave passes through you, you won't gain heat from it (just your normal silent running heat gain).
In my vanila playtrough, I had a 64 wagon train for coal. It was 32 wagons in front, then 8 locomotives and then 32 wagons behind. The loading station was U shaped and those locomotives fit in the bend.

So, legendary nuclear fuel (and possibly legendary rocket fuel as well) might actually be *faster* with reverse trains, since they can (probably) accelerate faster than decelerate. So, additional air resistance will decrease the time it takes to break more than it will increase the time to accelerate.

Double headed trains, but with the locomotives facing the cargo wagons in the middle.
I've actually run a base using 12-6-6-12 trains before. Wrapped the locomotives around the u-turn in the station and loaded on 2 tracks

You mean double butted trains.
It would be interesting to see how the performance difference is affected by congested networks and as the typical block size tends towards the length of trains. My gut is that, as ability to stop becomes the limiting factor for train speed and keeping blocks unreserved, this will further favour the wagon-first design
