@adammintern3927 sorry you feel that way! Of the 3 games showcased in this video, Track 'n Field is arguably one of the most well-known and fun to play Arcade video games of the 80's! Maybe try to play it yourself and put up some high scores ... a VERY rewarding and "difficult to master" game.

I have not (*gasp*) played Demon Attack (ever), but the more I look at it online, the more it looks like something I should try... For me, I grew up on Space Invaders (Atari 2600) and although I'd played the Arcade Version once or twice only (when VERY young) my affinity toward the home console was (and still is !) WAY higher. Phoenix (again, the 2600 port) was absolutely fabulous, and really captured the Arcade version very well... As for another fixed shooter (besides Galaxian, obviously - which I SUCK at, btw!) is Satan's Hollow - Now this game (if you've never played it) is such a unique take on Phoenix AND Space Invaders and really REALLY shines as unique (despite borrowing heavily from these 2 classic games). I guess the title was a little "taboo", so maybe was not as popular (as it should have been)... Great idea for a video (again)! Thanks!

@@arcadesunday4592 I can definitely see the Galaxian in Satan's Hollow. I've never played it, but I have seen gameplay on youtube. I imagine there was some superstition around titles like that (or maybe that's what drew an audience) due to the Satanic panic in the 70s / 80s.

@raza_is_retro oh it's 80's alright! 1980 release in fact so yup... Definitely makes the cut! This game is just class and should be more well known... It's not as hard to play as it may look... Try this out in MAME... or Stella (Atari 2600 emulator). Such a special game for for the time.

@retroprojections 100% "what you said" ! Haha. The character variations definitely improve replayability ! I love that Aero Fighters was originally vertically orientated and migrated to horizontally oriented (on the MVS platform in 2 and 3). Wouldn't it have amazing if Video System had teamed up with Cave or Raizing 8ing and produced a "modern" vertically oriented shoot-em-up, after their work with SNK / Neo-Geo ?! Food for thought...

Strangely enough, I saw this game at a sea-side restaurant (although they did not sell pizza!). Great take on the game's technicalities, btw ! I agree that it really does play very well, and mostly for all the reasons you mentioned.

Absolutely! This game in particular really shines in that department! Thinking back though, art was so important back then, as the developers had some serious limitations from a hardware standpoint! Developers these days are lazy (IMO) !! Haha! Yea, UN Squadron's (character) art style does have some similarities ! Both Capcom games... Mmm, I wonder whether it was the same art guy that worked on both games - This game was 1988 and UN Squadron was 1999 !!? Very possible!

I love my little Arcade, and besides actually playing games, I've become somewhat of a CRT technician (out of necessity, really). I've had to do many board level repairs to these CRT monitor chassis' over the years, so that "magnet" trick is one of my easy fix solutions... I've used that trick a bit more (after this video) and the results are pretty impressive... not perfect, but very acceptable! Neo-Geo had always fascinated me early on (like seeing the AES in game magazines for like $600 back in 1992!) ! Absolute "pie in the sky". When the Arcade MVS landed here back in the mid 90's, I played TONS of Puzzle Bobble (as that's all they really brought over initially). Later, Metal Slug 2 and 3 became more prevalent and Windjammers, Fatal Fury 3 (and Neo Drift Out) arrived, all but too late really. By then, we had Playstation, etc. What a time to have been alive though. Wow, such memories...

@RetroEdUK yes this game is super slick, and I love the "skills" involved in getting good at it... The audio and graphics too are exceptional for the time period too. SEGA absolutely KILLLED it with this game, being a JAMMA game, it was probably one of the cheaper games (for an operator to buy and operate) then the likes of "Outrun Deluxe Edition" (full hydrolic full size cabinet). The console ports were actually pretty good (IMO)! Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you ! I can't believe that I'd left the repair so long ! The picture had been "twitching" for months, so thankfully I found the time to rip out the chassis and do some good `ol capacitor replacement (which only took one guess, thankfully). Yea, the Aero Fighters series are really well playing, solid and memorable games (all featuring great audio too!).

The play mechanics (initially) the seem so direct and unforgiving but the fun in this game comes from understanding and learning how to play properly. Super cool game. Perhaps a similar idea, but I'd say Super Sprint is a lot more "analogue" where this game features a way more digital / direct control. It would be interesting if this game (as it is) could be played on a 360 degree steering wheel! Thanks for watching!

Yea a really good game! Perhaps underated, if you ask me. There were so many "higher budget" games out around that time (like SEGA Rally, Daytona, etc) which may have overshadowed this title (as a racing game)... It holds up well today as a totally playable classic...

Really loving the challenge that this game brings. I didn't have the opportunity to get good at this game (when it was released) but now I'm really appreciating the game for what it is... featuring a clean, simple yet hard to master control system! Definitely playing this more !

The English in the game is just amazing though... just what we'd expect (and I absolutely love it!). As you've correctly noted, there are no real (proper) instructions in-game on how the ranking / qualifying works... We place our hope on your next trial... literally... 😂

Yea F1 is pretty big here (even though we no longer host the F1) - but we DO have an F1 cerified track which was used until around the 80's I think). This is such a fun game though, but don't play enough of it...

Thank you - it's super fun to play, and has surprisingly realistic qualifying leaderboard. What's nice about this game too, is that it doesn't just immediately "game over" if you don't make it to the top 3 in the first race, and demand more coins to continue - it actually gives you a change (within top 6 in the F3000 qualifiers). Very fair. Thanks Capcom !

Ah, tell me about it 😒! It's just so unnecessarily difficult! That bridge level on stage 2... I mean, seriously? How are you supposed to remember which parts of the bridge will keep you up and which parts will let you fall! Overall, it's too hard... Don't get me wrong, I love a challenge, but this game! Another level of devious difficulty... almost like Capcom did it on purpose just to keep the series known for "the most difficult arcade game ever". Regardless, I'm going to give this one a few more tries...

Absolutely agree with your description of the "second wave" and the modern... "DoDonpachi" (should we say "Danmaku" style shoot-em-up...). Personally, I enjoy the modern very much, but will always go back to my roots, and play the classics to fill my soul. I so often encourage the younger generation to (at least) try these older games in the hope that they may appreciate them the way the older generation did.

@@arcadesunday4592 I misjudged the interest in retro for younger generations. I thought there would be a smaller interest, but it's growing. It makes sense to me now, since older type games are not made today. Those that are made have a different feel, look, and sound. I was interested in comics as a kid and started getting into looking for older comics for the history, look, and style of writing. Younger kids' interest in retro games really lines up with my experience with comics. I think some kids will build large retro libraries, but I think most dabble with emulation. Anyways, have you ever played Xevious 3D?

@WhatsOnMyShelf Yea, 100% about the younger generation. I've experienced this first hand (to varying degrees) with my own kids, their friends, my nephews, etc. I still believe there is a massive part of that original experience which has been lost forever (which they will never experience) such as competitive play against total strangers, smoke filled arcades (well that's a good one I guess!) and the feeling of playing such an amazing game which could not be played at home... that strong pull to the Arcades, which nowadays is totally negated by consoles, PCs and even mobile phones! Oh, Xevious 3D... Never played it but did just watch a quick video or two. Looks good I guess... Theme is well captured... Not sure if I'd take it seriously though? I'd have to try play it a bit myself... although I can almost certainly say (before playing) that the original is better...

@@arcadesunday4592 They have some unique unlockable ships in Xevious 3D. There are things that can't be replicated. It's funny that you mention the smoke-filled arcades. That wasn't a thing where I grew up, but last month I was locking my bike to a rack when I smelled a familiar scent. It was something I couldn't recognize immediately, so it had a bit of nostalgic pull, though I wasn't in love with it. I realized there was a lady on a smoke break and she had some old-school cigarette that I hadn't smelled since I was sat in the non-smoking section of a restaurant of the 90s (like the distance made any difference). I know there are places people can go where smoking is more common, but it is nearly non-existent in my day- to-day. The bans are everywhere and people's habits have changed. I was never a smoker, so I have no idea the brand that lady was smoking, but it was definitely a trip back.

@@WhatsOnMyShelf ah, yea that "cigarette smell"... which got stuck in your clothes, and hair; which one's parents would LOVE to comment on, and why the Arcades were bad places to hang out...haha! Probably got lung damage just from frequenting the Arcades back then (mid 80's)... Definitely don't see as many people smoking these days... a strange time back then.
