HEXA, An Opensource Hexagonal Rocket
HEXA is a rocket design I've been working on for a while. The video starts with a sequence of bits of footage of the test launches (with the odd slomo launch clip) From 44 seconds on it's me talking about the design and the kit (which is available on my Tindie shop www.tindie.com/products/concreted0g/hexa-an-opensource-hexagonal-rocket/ ).
The entire project is made using FreeCAD to design the 3D printed parts and Inkscape to draw the body tubes, the body tubes can be cut by hand but I've used a small vinyl cutter to really accurately cut and score the design. They fly really well on a B6-4 and I'm estimating around 500' altitudes. I'll fly one soon with a small altimeter!

    An interesting little robot, but it has a huge drawback. You designed the whole thing wrong. Motor mounts made from an injection molding are used for installation by holding the gearbox, not the motor! With an assembly like yours, these gearboxes will be destroyed very quickly by anything that gets between the gears.

    • @concretedog7427
      @concretedog7427 5 месяцев назад

      You can use the clamps over the gearbox in the same way as the commercial ones with a standoff. Or indeed we could design a mount that has a gearbox cover. I've run them a lot as they are and they are pretty resilient.

      Basically when the wings are in the stowed position the two smaller horns on the wings form a small V slot (where the pressure of the elastic bands wants to rotate the V closed as the wings open) the wire then sits inside the V and the horns press against it but the wings can't open until the wire is pulled out of the way and the V can cross each other.

    They should produce another version without the lock-down but in a very distinct colour so it would be easy to spot in an exam hall. It is a huge pity that all modern calculators are hobbled to meet education requirements. I really miss the good old days when calculators were made as good as the chips and displays of the time allowed for a professional market! Colour displays are another regret well illustrated on this video as the display has to distractingly blink off after a timeout period to avoid the battery drain.

      I've only owned the N0120 so it would have been false for me to do this, also I was asked to do an unboxing and review of this item.

    Very neat. And another use of the "gutter grenades" which is always good.

    I wish there were more programming language options. The HP Prime G2 has the same problem. On the TI-Nspire CX you have Lua, a variation of Python and TI-BASIC. Not everyone has access to jailbreaking tools to run C applications on the Nspire and NumWorks. This machine has a lot of potential by running over twice faster than the previous NumWorks n0110, but I wish python's heap was higher than 64 KB.

      Yeah, I agree. It's great if you just want to play with python but it's a shame it's so locked down.

      Im quite new on calculators, but if you'd like to have more programming options/focus on coding, why would you not just use a pc, its not like your going to code much on the calculator itself.

    My favourite multitool, which lives permanently on my belt in a holster, is a Schrade Toolbox Vice Grip. This has a couple of blades, a double ended screwdriver and (the important bit) a set of locking vice grips. Soooooo useful.

      @concretedog7427 Год назад

      Schrade seem to make a huge range of stuff, it's a bit less common I think in the UK. I have a small (less than 15cm) pair of mole grips that often live in my kit, if I found a multitool pair that would be tempting!

    I carry a really low end multitool with an adjustable wrench in my laptop bag. Your Nextool Vanguard here is so much nicer, but the one I carry was selling for only $3 on Amazon when I bought it, so I can't really complain! When I did IT work, I always carried an adjustable wrench in my laptop bag next to my screwdriver multitool. The number of times when I would drive or fly to one of our locations and sit on a wobbly chair or at a wobbly table was way too high. You can really improve someone's tiny office when you make their table stop wobbling by tightening a bolt. Sure. You can tighten a bolt with the pliers, but I always feel like a cave man when I do that, and sometimes you just can't easily tighten a nut or bolt well when you also have to squeeze really hard.

      You deffo can't complain about a $3 tool! I deffo agree, bolt tightening with pliers feels a bit barbaric! Although, I've done it many times!

    Splendid that, an adjustable can be infinitely useful - I love a good multi tool myself for all the random things I also get up to, and I carry three with me usually. A pliers based multi-tool from Stanley, a cheap one with a hammer head on it (for the drone landing pad ground pegs), and a swiss army 'knife' for general scissors, pliers, screwdrivers etc, although I don't carry any of them for the knives on them, they are all legal. I have often wondered how many I can reasonably account for if I were ever stopped though.

      I'm similar! I tend to often carry two... I never thought about the cheaper hammer multitools but I often can be found using a rock to tap in drone pad pegs or rocket tower retainers! Lol.. I'll check some out!

    I wonder if you could similarly heat treat thicker quadcopter props. So far the printed attempts I've seen all have those typical ridges on them from the printing that makes them inefficient and delicate, but maybe this way you could get around the whole issue.

    • @concretedog7427
      @concretedog7427 Год назад

      Yeah I'd be interested to try some experiments with thicker props. There are lots of different approaches for annealing prints around, like packing parts in salt etc, I plane to have a play when I get chance!

    Great idea on the 3D printed props. Would a metal can and hot air gun speed up the process?
