DeWalt DWS779 (12” Sliding Compound Miter Saw) Review | My Experience 2 Years Later
I’ve had my DeWalt 12” Sliding Miter Saw (DWS779) for a couple years now, and wanted to do a product walkthrough and review video after having used it for an extended period of time. This saw is a huge investment, and I watched a lot of similar review videos prior to purchasing mine, so I hope that the feedback I provide is insightful to help you determine if this is the right saw for you!
Also, it’s worth noting that this is a saw that is probably best purchased on sale and not at full price. Typically, this goes on major sale at least 2-3 times per year from what I’ve seen (especially around Christmas/Black Friday). If it’s not something you need immediately, it may be worth waiting for ...

    Did you do 4" between strips?

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop 25 дней назад

      I think it was approximately 4” but any spacing will work as long as you have enough space to fit the cleat in place and move it easily! In my experience, if they’re too close things can start to feel a bit cluttered, but some people prefer them super close.

    I am still learning things about wood. I thought you cannot put screws in the end grain because they do not hold well. What size screws were you using to attach them?

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop Месяц назад

      Great point, generally speaking it’s not the ideal way to join pieces together, but in my experience it’s not always an issue, especially if you make a few considerations. I believe this issue is due to the way wood grain runs, and it can result in splitting pieces. The key way to avoid this is putting the screws in at an angle, this will give them a better opportunity to securely anchor into the wood. I would also recommend pre-drilling if possible. If this were a decorative piece, I would not recommend this, but for this use it’s held up fine for the couple of years I’ve had it up. Also, I believe these were 4” screws.

    How do you get the head of the trimmer to rise above so that you can unscrew it when I do it the head does not clear the pin so it will unscrew

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop 2 месяца назад

      I’m not quite sure how to address that. In my case, when I held the trimmer upside down all I had to do was rotate the head and then I was able to insert the pin and unscrew it. I didn’t have to do anything special for it to clear. Also, make sure you are only removing the part beyond the pin. The pin itself and the slot it fits in stay in place when it’s removed and do not spin at any point in the process.

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop 2 месяца назад

      Hello, I think mine is the HD55. Honestly, it’s a bit hit or miss. It definitely takes a few passes to get an accurate measurement. Even still, I’ve had instances where I missed studs and this says I’m right on it. For the price it isn’t terrible, but it can be a bit frustrating to have to go over the same spot multiple times to double check. If you have the budget for one with really good ratings that works 99% of the time, I think it would be well worth it to invest in a really good model.

    • @augustpineworkshop
      @augustpineworkshop 2 месяца назад

      Hmm that’s very strange. I’m not quite sure what could cause that to happen, but I would definitely stop using it until you figure it out. With dust collection systems in general, I’ve read concerns about static electricity buildup, but I wouldn’t expect that to appear in the sander. I suppose something else to test is if it still sparks when you are not using a dust collector. My inclination is that this may be an issue with the sander itself and not the dust collection setup, as I don’t think this setup has much electrical risk, but I could be wrong.

    • @augustpineworkshop

      I’m assuming you meant steady beep. Generally, the steady beep indicates a stud. If it’s indicating that across an entire wall though, there may be another material or condition that is causing it to falsely indicate a stud.

    Did you use the space between the back of the cabinet and the back of the top drawer to install the 2x4’s? Did they interfere with the drawers in any way? I have some space between the cabinet back and the back of the drawers and I’m thinking I might need to add the 2x4’s like you did to support a 14” overhang of my butcher block top.

    I have went through right many videos on building ramps and really like the idea of you making the top section longer than alot I have seen. Some looked right sketchy in this area. All my vehicles are SUVs so I may skip the doweled rear block because I already have 2 chalks that I use at the boat ramp but must say that is a great idea and may incorporate it later and I may add an inch or 2 to the other layers but not the top one also!!
