Vessel Slainte cruises to Solomons Island and Oxford, MD
Welcome aboard the Vessel Slainte as we say goodbye to our temporary home base in Kent Narrows and head off on our "last lap" of the Chesapeake before we head back home to NJ. In this episode, we head south to charming Solomons Island where we visit the Calvert museum and hear a free concert. From there, we head over to Oxford, MD for a look around and for an entertaining show of nature. Slainte!

With Kent Narrows as our new (temporary) home base we checked out a winery by boat at Love Point. We then did a lap through Annapolis, St. Michaels, and back to Kent Narrows. Finally, to round out the weekend, we did a day trip up to Rock Hall, MD to see what it had to offer. We are really enjoying our new cruising ground and soaking in the Chesapeake Bay experience!

    Great video, I've missed seeing them, looks like one more popped on my feed. The storm was excellent, is it disconcerting at anchor during heavy weather? Hey James, thanks for checking in! We anchor a lot, and have been through many generations of anchors. The one we have now is really great and very reliable, however a 180 degree wind shift is nearly impossible for any anchor to handle. If the wind is steady, I sleep like a baby, but you have to watch out for those shifts. Our kids are creating lives of their own, so we don't see them quite as much as we used to, but we do treasure the time that we are together and try to make the very most of it. Wishing you and your family a warm and joyful winter! Slainte!

      Hi Joe, the company is called Pop Board. Ours are the first-generation of the chairs - I think the newer ones have a few more features. We ordered them at a boat show in March and they were so popular that they didn't come in until August of that year! They are comfortable and versatile, and we really enjoy them. The only downside is that when they are deflated, they fold awkwardly and are a little hard to store. Hope that helps, and hope you had a great summer aboard that Sea Ray! Slainte!

    Can you give us details about your crane dinghy davit? We love how sleek it is and we also have the 48 SeaRay Sundancer - we have the manual hurley davit that we hate and most of them are so bulky in the swim platform. Thanks! (We are also on the Chesapeake Bay, in Annapolis ❤

    • @thevesselslainte
      @thevesselslainte Месяц назад

      Hi Michele, thanks for the comment - you are the first one to ever ask about the crane :-). We also had the Hurley davit, but on our previous boat (420 Sea Ray). There were things I liked about it, but my biggest problem was that the dinghy was too heavy to haul out myself. When we were shopping for the 48, many of the ones we looked at had the hydraulic swim platform. That option was great if you were away from the dock, but it traps the boat on the platform if you are in a slip. Oh, and it's expensive. Our boat was the only one we have ever seen with a crane option. I wasn't sure what to think at first, but when I found that I could pluck the dinghy off of the platform and drop it on our dolly at the dock, I became very interested. Our crane was made by Quicklift, but sadly they are no longer in business. It is pretty simple and basic, with two hydraulic pistons (up/down, in/out), and a manually operated swing. Ours has no winch, which would be nice, but not critical. A quick google search shows that there are other vendors out there, including UMT marine in FL. If you have a fixed swim platform, then this is definitely the way to go. Your back will thank you! Thanks for watching, and enjoy that beautiful boat. Slainte!

      Hey, thanks for the comment. We have the WM RIB-310 single-floor PVC model, and it is rated for a 15 HP. We originally used it with an old 8 HP 2-stroke that I had, and (with a little effort) it would plane with 2 adults. We stepped up to the Suzuki 15 HP 4-stroke last year. This one starts on the first pull every time and has EFI, which is pretty impressive for an engine that does not use a battery. I had hoped the 15 would push 4 adults up onto a plane, but it really can't. I may play with the prop pitch to see if I can make it work, but it really rips with 2 or 3 people. Overall, I am happy with it. I think we bought it in late 2018 and it is still in good shape (I do keep a cover on it). I have had WM & Zodiac PVC dinghies before, and I can typically get about 10 years out of them. WM is more basic, while Zodiac had more features, but the material wears out eventually no matter the brand. You might be able to go longer with Hypalon, but I find that after 10 years, I am itching for a new dinghy anyway! Hope that helps.

    Great job on the Washer/Dryer! Ours does not work, and my wife wants it gone! She sees that space as another hanging locker. So, I have a few questions on the removal: 1. In hindsight, was it necessary to remove "the laundry room door"? If so, how did that come out? 2. In removing the main stairs, were all the screws accessible from the salon side? Any notes, tips, or hints you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

    • @thevesselslainte
      @thevesselslainte 2 месяца назад

      Hi Jaybeaux, The cabinet that hides the washing machine must come off because the screws that hold the stair box in place are covered by the cabinet frame. Actually, they are ALSO covered by the vinyl cover on the aft stateroom wall. You have to peel back the edges of the vinyl to find them. Here are the high-level steps for you to get it out of there: 1. Open the laundry room cabinet and remove the access panel above the shelf. 2. Reach through and remove the 2 screws holding the washing machine lid onto the machine. You will need a stubby screw driver, and find the screws with your fingers. They are in the back 2 corners, pointing at the door, so you need to remove them blindly. 3. With those 2 screws removed, you can slide the lid backwards to release it from the front lip, and then you can pop it up a bit and slide it out the front. If you don't remove the machine lid, you will not get the cabinet out. The little shelf in the cabinet will hit the top of the machine. Your other option here is to sawzall out the shelf. 4. With the machine lid removed, now remove the screws holding the cabinet into the side walls. I think there are 3 or 4 on each side, very obvious. 5. Now you can slide the bottom of the cabinet out. Keep pulling/tilting until the top of the cabinet is freed from it's slot, and then set it aside. This part is tough, even if you do it right. 6. Start peeling the edges of the vinyl and look for the screws holding the box to the wall. There were a bunch - maybe 12? 7. Now move to the salon side. My boat had another screw through the right-hand TV cabinet into the side of the stair box. Remove that if you have it. 8. Remove the 2 courtesy lights in the stair cabinet (I think I had to cut the wire on the top one to get the box out). Then remove the carpeted panel above the top step. Mine had a screw hidden behind the carpet at the bottom of the panel, but it had been off of there before, so you may need to do some hunting for the fasteners on yours. 9. Remove the hand railing 10. Remove the frame that holds the lower steps. There are 4 screws on the floor and 4 that go through the front of the stair cabinet, so you will need help getting those 4 off. 11. You should be able to move the box at this point, which will expose the washer. Move slow in case you missed something. 12. Find a young/strong back to help lift it out of the cabin! Hope that helps! Feel free to post this in the 48 DA owners blog if you think it might help someone else. If you make a closet out of that space, I would love to see pictures. Good luck with your project!

      @@thetattooedladyfan I am too, Jim! I thought for sure there would be a restriction in that zone for the day. Since there was not, I put the drone up to get some shots of us, but I stayed very low, certainly below any sailboat masts in the area. Great show, though!

    VERY cool during the airshow but I'm not sure just how comfortable I'd feel during the sail boat race...it kind of looked like organized chaos!!!

      @@BellavistaPEI Thanks for the note, Tom. The Admiral was less than comfortable herself with those sailboats racing through the mooring field! I think the video camera helped provide a buffer zone :-). Those guys were into it, though. I used to race sailboats and I have made really close passes for really small gains, but it’s a much different feeling being the obstacle instead of the racer!

    Hi I'm a newbie looking into getting a sundancer like a early 2000's like a 340 any tips what I should look for? I'm in NY and just going to use it on the Hudson River for weekends with friends...I'm a Cardiologist so I dont have a lot of time to spend with DIY projects...Great videos God bless.

    • @thevesselslainte
      @thevesselslainte 3 месяца назад

      Hey Doc, I thought I replied to your note, sorry for the delay. First thing is that I enjoy doing the DIY projects on the boat. It is certainly not required, as there are plenty of marinas who will be happy to do the work for you. If you are shopping for a used boat, you want to find something that was well cared for. Low engine hours are good, especially with gas engines which you should expect to change or overhaul at ~1000 hours. Look for the best example you can find in your price/model range. Things like a faded hull can be brought back, but un-repaired damage is a sign of other potential problems. Keep an eye on electronics and on canvas and upholstery. These things are expensive, but are replaceable. You might be able to negotiate a good deal and then you can have them upgraded for you so that they are fresh and to your liking. Consult a pro before you shop so you know how much it would cost to replace these things. There are always particular problems to watch out for with each model. I have not researched the 340, but there are a lot of them out there, and SeaRay has a great owner group. Google is your friend - do some searching online. Finally, I will say there are other youTube channels that might give you good info on the model you are looking at. For example "boating with boogaloo" has had several of those boats, I believe. Have fun with your hunt, and hope to see you out on the water! Slainte!

    Looks like a cookie cuttah stinkpot. Jeez, a port failed! Imagine that! Cookie cuttah stinkpots are not built to take much punishment, why don’t you get a real boat, like a Hinckley Sou’wes 52, she’ll take whatevah you can throw at ‘er.

      Scomo, we cut our teeth on sailboats for >20 years, sailed to lots of places in the northeast US (including Nantucket) and had some unforgettable adventures! There are times when I miss it, but these days I am quite happy to tickle the throttles instead of grinding the winches! I will stick with my stinkpot and patch her up as needed! Thanks for watching, Slainte!

      @@thevesselslainte Nothing personal, not meant to be an insult, but if I was to buy a powerboat, it would be a lobstah yacht not standard cookie cuttah bleach bottle. You mentioned 5 ft following seas in Buzzards Bay that caught your attention. I raced on BB for 40 yeahs usually in the afternoon hurricane with squayah breaking seas of 6-7 smashing into them to the winwid mahk then broad reaching back to the finish at 10 knots. Wouldn’t want to be in a clorox bottle in those conditions. A lobstah yacht could take it though.
