Candice Wiggins made some fiery claims this week about the "bullying culture" of the WNBA. I discuss some of the statements she made, get other players take on their experiences/ the accusations, and express my own of thoughts on the mind boggling article. My god I totally agree!! A couple of years ago Deanna Bonner got a tech for running down the court and finishing a layup after a bad call and it was total BS. There’s plenty more examples of course! Arike unfortunately has now been labeled as a player to watch after the Uconn game. She’ll have to shake that off. Love the videos!
Just looked at the SNL skit. Since I never look at SNL anymore, I was not aware of it. There were two dimensions to it I found amusing. First, compared to NBA players, WNBA players aren't making much money, but compared to the average person, they are doing well and would attract parasites like those guys. Second, the gold diggers knowledge of the players made them sound like the typical uber WNBA fans I've met. I don't see how the lesbian jokes were homophobic or a cheap shot. This is humor and satire. All the starters on the all star team are lesbians and many players are married to women, so how could you do a skit about the WNBA and not at least allude to that fact?
"More than 94" I love it and wish you much success! As a lifelong WBB fan and supporter, I've always loved the league and the players. I've appreciated the sacrifice y'all make for the game and more specifically for the W. However, I admit being frustrated by the lack of coverage and support, as well as, the WNBA stories that go untold and the untruths that have been allowed to proliferate. I look forward to seeing you help fill some of these gaps. It is much needed and appreciated!
Best wishes..this is so needed for the W
So excited for the new platform 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Hey Dev: Please add a date to each episode. Love ya, Gramma.
Great stuff, Dev! Always entertained by your videos and insight into the game!
Glad you’re back Dev! Been enjoying the videos and the different topics you’re covering. Keep them coming!
T & A sells, but I'm not with it.
Happy to see you back Dev! I’ve seen the twins “play”...Imma leave it at that
So happy you’re back!
Tell it like it is Dev ! ND Fans know what real Players look like ( buckets ) Welcome back !!!
You really educate me with your videos.
The regular NBA had no Twitter, Facebook and mostly slow white players in the league. Plus there were less people in the country. Is it an honest comparison 20 years in. There are fans that know more about women's college basketball and Olympic basketball than the WNBA. I watch occasionally just to see their handles and, I hate to sound mean, but there just isn't anything close to a Kyrie in the WNBA. At the same time, she probably was bullied if she's thumping the Bible and kind of a judgmental bully herself.
You have to ask yourself why would she make up stuff. I am a fan and I do believe that the majority of players are gay. Some of them look pretty tough and actually scary, but I am a fan and will keep watching, Even though I don’t think that some players are promoting and showing themselves a good example for young girls and young women.
Candice Wiggins was Self centered Bitch
I thought Russia was secular? Need to do some research on my end. Surprised that was seen as a viable solution to the problem.
Whoa, had no idea. Knew it was cold there, but daannnggg
Good stuff! I can totally relate from my playing days in Germany! Those damn "team doctors"....lol
Ugh fine asf!!
Which basketball players both male and female did you admire and pattern your game after the most while growing up.
This is great. More episodes please.
That's just messes up
I love the fact that you have addressed this matter. Women and men are physiologically built differently and only ignorant people would want to see women display the same athletic capabilities as men. Made respect to all female athletes holding it down despite the trash talking they receive. Glad I stumbled on your content cz I'm writing a paper on the same issue, femininity and sports performance. Keep doing what you are doing, I'm a huge wnba fun from Kenya..
Thanks for sharing! I'm always curious about player experiences and am happy to hear that you are in a good situation. There are so many un-reported "mysteries" with the league that it is good to hear directly from a player. I wish you a great 2018+ and will definitely lift your mom up in prayer!
happy to hear you doing great, Dev. hope your mom fast fast recovery she'll be back 100% in no time. good luck overseas with good angels, everything sounds so awesome but I can't wait to see you in the w this season. thanks for sharing!
I really enjoy this point of view I wish I would of stumbled across this channel sooner though when I was drafted and made it pro (for hockey) it was more then a few years ago I'm guessing this channel wasn't even a thought. Everything is relatable regardless of the sport from the change coming out of college to pro everything you said is true and coming from a player who had those Olympians and big names playing while your in the background trying to hustle and get better it's tough. From not get time in games you start to loose key in game skill. I didn't realize coming into it I would have to go out of my way to fine ice to stay with it not to mention having to work cause there was no pay at that point. With the men you get sent down to the farm teams with the women's leagues you simply don't play it's as simple as that. I think that was the hardest thing. I guess what I'm getting at is if I would of came across this video way back when I'd probable still be playing cause I'd of know what I was truly getting into. So thank you for being so open I'm sure your helping a lot of women out there see what they have ahead of them if they so choose this rout for their careers.
The NBA has always "pissed" me off due to lack of MANY missed necessary whistles being blown by the "refs" IE:(not actually "taking out" the ball, after made baskets and traveling before dribbling).
"I", PERSONALLY, RESPECT " YOU...AND The WNBA. And I'd like to add..."you are REALLY "SUPER CUTE"!!
I guess I am a nobody because I watch every game I can! Thanks for your intelligent discussion about the perceived culture of the WNBA.
kind of hard not to be from "outside" the WNBA world when about 5 people watch it.
Great job, Devereaux. Hope that you are doing well in Indiana. You have a lot of fans still in Minnesota.
what really bothers me is that this type of media attention is not given to W players on the regular. but incendiary comments are splashed all over the world. also a golf writer conducted the interview. but when basketball writers reached out for a comment, she declined.
That shirt has to go viral. #the2%
Wow, you are doing a great job! I love hearing your pov.
Cute shirt. Love the more positive message you share. Thx for posting.
I have a lot of respect for you and the women of the WNBA for working hard everyday to earn the recognition that you rightfully deserve. Keep working and good luck in your upcoming season!
Wnba#4life
Great job Dev!!
Thank you Devereaux for your thoughtful, insightful response. Thank you for being so positive and thorough in responding to what could have been very damaging to the league without strong women like yourself standing up and being heard.
as always love you show. keep it going. as they say your perception is your reality. from those podcasts interviews I gathered she was dealing with a lot of insecurities within herself that might have had an internal conflict which showed in how she perceived her world. if she was bullied/teased a)I would specific events b)it seems to be individualized and not a culture. That's a big difference.
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing your insight. Very informative. I enjoy the wnba and wish you and the league tremendous success.
I really do appreciate your videos. You put in more research than some of these "professional journalists". I am glad that you use the platforms you have to express your thoughts and highlight issues around women's basketball. I know you will continue and hopefully we will see a podcast or weekly telecast featuring you.
lol, the 2% shirt. Love it. Great video on Wiggins claims. Glad WNBA players are speaking out. Unfortunately I don't know if the damage Wiggins has done can be undone. These news and media websites want to publish Candice's story because it has a attention grabbing headline but they don't want to publish that no one is backing up her claims and most players, former players, and coaches have the complete opposite view of the league. Shouldn't that make the news too. The overwhelmingly positive experiences people have had with the league. But no, people who already don't like or follow the league choose to believe a bitter former player because if it makes the news and its coming out of one persons mouth it must be true. MANY things she said were simply untrue and it makes it hard to believe that she was bullied and not just trying to make the WNBA look bad because she didn't leave the league like she wanted to. She literally told The Players Tribune players didn't like her because how she played defense but now we are suppose to believe players disliked her because she is straight? Sorry, no. That should be evidence enough to prove that she doesn't have her story straight (no pun intended) and she is spreading some alternative facts to sell her book. And the sad thing is, parents of young girls may read this and make a determination not to let their daughter player basketball based on these claims. Its sad.
The AltRight, Trump supporters, conservatives, and anti-gay folks also jumped all over this story. They wanted a reason to jump on women and gay people. Gay people and women will always have a target on our backs I have been a WNBA fan forever! Fully support all women's sports of all kinds. I travel all over the place in the summer to watch WNBA games, I work with several WNBA players on websites and digital media.... I love the WNBA, the atmosphere, the competition, the drive that these women have. So when I read the Wiggins article I was like GTFOH! She knows better! The WNBA had a long history and "femme-ing" up the league. People need to realize that the WNBA actually used to have make-up classes and fashion classes for orientation to promote being more feminine.... I really hope that they aren't doing this anymore! (Give these women classes on finance, how to handle themselves on social media, real world knowledge and skills, etc!) And I could go into all kinds of reasons as to why I think the WNBA actually still keeps the LGBT community at arms length, but that is for another time. IMO, Candice Wiggins is full of ish. She wants to sell her book... that none of those people that have jumped out to support her on social media are going to buy. (Candice they don't give a shit about you lol) She became a player that was used to being a standout at Stanford to a player that struggled to stay on a team, (4 teams in 8 years), several injuries, and just did not have the appeal to have a big fan following. The competition level is extremely high in the WNBA, just like any other pro sports. People talk trash.. women talk trash just as much as men, and she probably got her feelings hurt more than once on the court. But it's sports... there is no crying in sports! Put your big girl shorts on, dust yourself off, and head back down the floor. She wasn't prepared for pro sports mentally or physically and now she is thirsty for attention. Right on Dev! Dissent is not unpatriotic and discomfort is the point of protest. It's also extremely brave and I greatly appreciate you (and others) using your voice within the realm of your work as it reaches a broad audience. There are some of us as fans that make people uncomfortable when we kneel or meditate during the national anthem. Much respect to you and great episode!
