Whisky Uncorked
США
Добавлен 26 сен 2023
The one thing I like almost as much as drinking whisky, is talking about whisky. Join me as I continue to explore the expansive world of whisk(e)y both home (USA) and abroad. I love Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, single malts in general, rum, mezcal.... and basically everything in between. If it's good, I want to try it. If it's weird I want to understand it. I will do reviews, podcasts, and eventually livestreams with a long term focus of discussion based content. Slainte! Cheers!

I feel that all of those RUclipsrs who LOVE this 18yr old (pick me, pick me) should stop talking about. Don’t tempt others to try it. Let it be our little secret. It would give us a better chance at acquiring a bottle so that we could carve out a quiet moment in our lives and experience scotch heaven. I have only ever had the chance to enjoy a dram at the distillery and my first sip almost made me weep. Keep up the great reviews…..love your gentle approach to tasting.
I got a bottle of this for US$40 at Total Wine (Summer 2024) and saved it to open later, but your review aroused my curiosity. The neck pour was shocking: chemical, vinegar, industrial, even offensive. But just after a few days, it mellowed out and has become a true contender. I still prefer Benromach or Springbank for the funky stuff, but it's a relatively complex 12 Y/O that I’m enjoying. At the price, I think it’s worth trying.
One of the best ASM bottlings I've had! Wish there was more to be had. Great review!
Nice review of the Westland. I have only tried the Garrayanna and thought that was also very good. I’ve never been to a Binny’s but I live relatively close to the Rockford store so I may have to road trip to check out their whiskey selection.
First off, I agree that the 43% and coloring is bullshit and it would be better with better specs. I do like Oban 14 though and some of the special editions (not so much the latest though). It has kind of a starfruit note, that is different and better than the straight pear note that I get from many other whiskies. I also like the saltiness/brine a lot, and the light sweetness. To say that low cask influence is just for blends or beginner drinkers is wrong in my opinion. I almost think the opposite is true. A whisky where the distillate is totally overrun by first fill active sherry or bourbon barrels is reduced to just the barrels. I like that as well, but I do think it becomes close to a cocktail at some point, and not a real whisky, where you might as well mix the whisky with wine, sherry, syrup or bourbon, because that's what you like anyway. That said, I still appreciate the review, even if we disagree on some stuff here
Just picked up a 19yo version from Norfolk W&S on the east coast Great channel. Keep it going
Nice review man. you took us on a journey and touched some good points. This one is a 'mood' whisky for me. Some days I really enjoy it and some days it feels off. Certainly not bland though, cheers 🥃
The aqvavitae releases are excellent!
No thanks! I'm with GWhisky on this one. Easy to find locally in Canada. $85. Cheap but not a Loch Lomond fan. Sometimes I get the sense you suffer a lot with FOMO and grab some selections based on that. Not sure! Cheers!
@christinecamley There's a difference between FOMO and listening to the advice of a wider community. Loch Lomond has improved their products over the last 5+ years considerably. It would be pure stubbornness to simply give up on a distillery or style that I didn't care for previously. I want every distillery to release good whisky. And when a distillery that didn't use to do that much, is starting to do just that, I want to celebrate them, not ignore it.
Great idea! Nice way to use and integrate whiskys from the past. This is my favorite CR that I've been able to get. Thanks for the video!
Man, I love this malt. One of the very few I would consider a true permashelf whisky. One I crave sometimes. Sweet, summery, malty, honest bliss. One thing I disagree on: I definitely get plenty fresh white / yellow fruits on this one. A staple.
Thank you 🥃👍
Completely agree with you mate, this is such a solid dram. I recently tried a few Glancadams including 18,21,25 but I still think the 10 is their best offering. I don't know how but good for us price wise. Cheers!
This one is good, as is the limited edition 13!
Agree with this one going MIA on American shelves. Been waiting about a year for this one to show up again.
I love this one, one of my gateway Scotch whiskies. I also love the 15. Both of these are readily available in New Hampshire, but it is a difficult find in Massachusetts, so I'm glad I'm just a 15 minute drive to the NH border. The 10 is $65 and the 15 is $109, but both are frequently on sale for $60 & $100, respectively. Well worth it, IMO. I restock when on sale. Cheers!
I picked up my first bottle of anCnoc 18 last weekend and it is instantly one of my favorites, along with the much more expensive (but still worth it for me) Balblair 18. Same FOMO, I plan to get another ($150) while I still can. There's only a few hanging around at very few locations near me. The Balblair is more available, so I'll bide my time on buying a backup of that. Great in-depth reviews! Cheers!!!
It's $120cdn here or $87usd, guess we're lucky and should stock up.
Oban used to be one of my favorites, but my last bottle of Little Bay was hard to finish, and the 2023 Distiller's Edition was a total disappointment and a waste of a lot of money ($124). The use of cheap casks came to mind, so I feel validated by this review. 🥃
Yeah, 1998-2003 Oban and Talisker were my favourites. Their parent company has steadily been running them into the ground for over the last couple of decades though. I never drink Diageo products on principle.
Bunnahabien, Ledaig, Tobermory, Kilchoman, Port Charlotte/Bruichladdich, Ardnamurchan, Springbank, Arran/Lagg, Deanston, Glencadam etc etc - ALL the best distilleries are non-Diageo!
@Martin-uj7wj There are over 120 distilleries in Scotland alone without including Diageo (not to mention all the distilleries around the world), so I think there's still plenty of selection without Diageo. The only three Diageo distilleries I really like are Caol Ila, Talisker, and Mortchlach, but I can certainly do without them. I'd rather drink Port Charlotte 10, Arnamurchan AD, and Bunna 12, for example . . they are cheaper, no color added, 46% and up, NCF.
@Martin-uj7wj If you drank all of those products when they were good ('90s-mid'00s), then you wouldn't touch them now. A company selling the "same thing" with a huge reduction in quality and for more money? Hahahaaa-No Thanks. I'll stick with my memories of the good versions and the taste of the better presented new drams.
@Martin-uj7wj No urban myth, and I started drinking single malts in the early '90s. People have done side-by-side comparisons of '90s Talisker (for example) with recent bottlings and the difference is "night and day" in the words of one whiskytuber. I'm happy for you if you're finding value + flavour with IBs of Diageo malts, but you're missing the point - you shouldn't HAVE TO look for IBs of these brands for quality as they were great before the distilleries became about investor profit margins. I'm not a massive fan of Springbank... I think it's very solid whisky but doesn't deserve the hype & inflated prices it goes for. The regular Port Charlotte 10 is good value at 50-60 quid in today's market. It sh@ts all over Laga 16 for example.
I finished the bottle with difficulty: for me it is too sweet, it lacks structure and is not well balanced.
I really want to pick up a bottle of this but it's now £85 here in the UK. That's a considerable price increase. Maybe for Christmas.
The 12 yo Oban from the 2021 special release is a banger 🤩
Agreed.
That's what I've heard. Haven't had a chance to try that one. Hopefully this year's release gets a bump in quality from the last year or two.
Thinking of picking up another Oban to give the distillery another try. Would like a Cask strength release to get a better impression of what the liquid really is. Just so hard to pull the trigger given the price of the special releases.
I can recommend the 2021 and the 2022. The 2021 is most like a straight up Oban but with cask strength and bolder flavors, and the 2022 has some white wine notes that are interesting (The 2024 is alright but not as good as them). I like them both a lot, however I will say that the saltyness/brine is less noticable in these versions than the standard 14, which is a shame. That part of it is masked by the other parts
Thanks for the review! There is a bottle of this in a local grocery store where I’m at. Sounds interesting, but probably not something I’ll pickup.
Love your channel and these discussions!
Glad you like them!
Nice one Brian, I mostly echo your comments on this. I never connected with this one. I much prefer the duty free PX one or the gorgeous 2022 Cairdeas PX which is phenomenal!
This is fast becoming one of my favorite channels. Great content!
Thank you so much! Cheers!
I liked it less than you at the start of the bottle. The sherry and smoke were not integrated well, not in harmony. That changed after the first couple drams, and by the end of the bottle, I liked it more than you. Solidly a 7. There is a cough-syrupy sort of note in there that some definitely do not enjoy. But I do.
My bottle was bought late in ‘23, so maybe the batches, maybe the taste buds.
I'm glad it opened up and you were able to enjoy it!
Interesting review. Thanks for the video!
Man $76 at total wine? These are $99 here in NC and SC 😢
$99 is tough to justify for this one. Peated scotch has weird pricing differences all over the country it seems.
Are you located in Chicagoland?
I am in San Diego these days, but grew up near Chicago and visit there a few times a year!
Looking forward to you boys getting involved in future. Let's get in touch 🥃
Hi Roy! Great to see you stop by. We should definitely connect. Maybe after the OSWAs? I assume it will be a busy couple weeks for you!
I just bought a bottle of this for USD 85. I reckon this would be considered fair value for the money?
$85 is a great price for this one!
You are wrong bro😂 there are many better whisky in that range
Hey Brian, great review! When I went to a 10am tasting at G&M in Elgin, the 2024 version is the one they greeted us to start our tasting. As 'breakfast whiskies' go this was incredible. The Speymalt series showcase what Macallan is actually capable of, which is gorgeous delicious whisky, in turn make us get even more angry with Macallan for not giving us this! Have you tried the 9 year old 43%abv one? For me that was a bit meh.
I have not tried the 9 year old. I am happy that there are examples of these distilleries out there that are worth drinking. I think it encourages me to not lose hope that we can get fair whisky from them one day if they are still making good spirit.
Thanks for the review! Local store is getting a 19 yr Speymalt. $400ish. I’ll be content with just trying 😊
Sounds incredible! I have a Signatory Macallan preordered from K&L coming next month. 18 years Cask strength for 250. Still not cheap but about as good as you can get for well aged craft Macallan these days, barring the new 100 proof series release which is, while not old, still incredible value. However those don't get released in the States. Looking forward for that bottle to come in. Cheers!
Great video It is depressing you are correct. But it’s the industry who have chosen to make it depressing. Here in Australia, you’d think it was Walt Disney setting the price for some of these labels. They are completely La-La-Land numbers. My opinion is leave them on the shelf Be braver; Take a punt on lessor known labels usually higher ABV ( than the majors) none chilled filters, and no caramel added Also, give some Irish labels ago. Still value to be found there.
Great advice!
Mortlach is one of the distilleries that I'm eager to learn to love, at least from Independents. That bottle was definitely one of the better ones I've tasted. Old mortlach is I think where it shines the most. Cheers!
Love many SMWS expressions but definitely not a Mortlach fan. Interesting thoughts. Cheers.
Fair enough!
Great review Brian (or is it Bryan). I love Mortlach from SMWS. I don’t have the one you have but do have a couple. Craigellachie is who got me going down the Wormtub path and Mortlach and Glen Elgin are a couple others I really enjoy. Cheers!
Glen Elgin is definitely on my list of distilleries to try!
This is very similar to Deanston 12. That unusual floral note.
Thanks for the review! I have been doing a-b comparisons between the value nominees and this has actually been doing really well. It surprisingly has been beating out Craigellachie 13 and Kilkerran 12 for me and I’m down to this and the Ledaig 10 for my vote. I get a bees wax note that is great in this.
Definitely sounds like an interesting bottle! I've enjoyed other Glen Gariochs I've had. Very floral.
keep this going
BevMo prices generally suck. I can still pick it up for $65 locally. K&L also has a Cadenhead’s Oloroso aged Glen Garioch 10 for $80. Decent stuff if you’re okay w/ Sherry cask scotch. Cheers.
Forgot to mention that I paid 58 CAN $ here in Calgary. (About 43 US $) wich give good value here.
Thanks for choosing this bottle. I got my first bottle a year ago and loved it. It has an interesting particular flavour component that is kind of new to me. I thought it might be the colouring, but not sure. I liked a lot. I got my second bottle and will open it soon.
Glad you enjoy it!
You'll get this in a 1l bottle at the duty frees in the UK for below £40, if preordered. Fyi. Thx for these wonderful videos. I agree, I wouldn't take this in the Top6 at the OSWAs :)
