Ardnamurchan 10 Year | 2024 | One of the BIGGEST surprises of the year? | Whisky Review 69
Many have been waiting patiently to taste 10+ year old Ardnamurchan single malt scotch. Even though it is an arbitrary line in the sand, it is certainly symbolic and possibly the beginning of a new chapter of modern day scotch whisky.

Appreciate the thorough review. Interested in trying it. I get this unique whipped cream and ice cream note on the normal AD. More of a texture thing but hints of taste as well with faint vanilla etc. Haven't tried anything else from them though

Interesting review. Not many reviews out there for this release. Top shelf whiskey was very disappointed with this one. Personally I have had a mixed experience. Liked their regular shelf release, did not like the Ardnamerica limited sherry release. And normally I love sherry and peat. Felt like they were trying to cover up a flawed young whiskey with sherry. However I was in Scotland few months ago and had a single cask bottled by the famous Highlander Inn pub and it was phenomenal. Feel like they are still working out some kinks but definitely interested in trying this one.

Great review, Brian. Thanks for sharing. Have tried several expressions from Ardnahoe (mostly 'possibly once to be released' samples). All very promising. Personally I prefer this one over the inaugural, which most likely us due to the less grape pollution involved. Slàinte mhath

Thanks for the review, it was great. I'm sure it's a good whisky but at over £110 for a 10 year old cask strength it's far far too expensive. Luckily here in Scotland there are plenty of reasonably priced alternatives.

Was a big fan of the MRC:01 in fact I still have one in the stash. What they want for these is what I use as an example of why the new 18 isn't really that expensive compared to what Bruichladdich sells single digit age Whisky for. My favorite red wine Whisky was the Deanston 2008 9yr Bordeaux Red Wine cask full maturation cask strength release from years ago. Back then it was $68 and I bought 4 of them and just finished the last one over the summer. Cheers

Excellent review Brian. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. For me the best of the series is the CC:01... and that will remain so since I more and more am happy to leave grape polluted whisky for others to enjoy. Ftr. I did not like the raved about MRC:01, of which I was excited when I purchased it... and learned that I better first taste every expression ever since... with which by now I stopped doing. Learned my lesson: not for me. Slàinte mhath

Longrow Red comparison, good call, my idea was always an Octomore substitute. But I guess 40 ppm is hardly Octomore. I've been lucky enough to collect 4 of the last 6 Reds. As a collector I'm looking for the high regarded bottle in the sub$200 range. I've paid $140 or $135 for the OLC and the SC that I have. I have a few wine matured whisky but the worst is an Edradour single burgundy cask that is so heavily sulfured that it needs a really wide open glass, hours of time and many mls of water to even approach it. On the other hand a Starward single cask was beautiful. I usually steer clear of finishes and young sherry bombs if I can but my pet idea is this:. Some red blends are aged in bourbon barrels. I think it adds a lot to mediocre wine, but then those barrels would be perhaps a mellower influence on the malt whisky. So ex red wine aged bourbon barrels.

Hello Brian, on one of Roy's vPubs Michael Henry said that LL do use e150a, so I think it's safe to assume that where their bottles do not mention uncoloured (and some e.g. limited edition ones do mention that, as well as ncf), then one can assume e150a's presence. It may only be small/slight, but they're leaving that option/route open to themselves, for now. Also, where LL mention 3 types of American oak I'm not 100% but relatively confident that they're meaning ex-Bourbon first-fill, refill, and dechar-rechar (rejuvenated) casks. That last is a fairly significant feature of their cask management/in-house cooperage. They also say they don't shave any casks--i.e. no str. I'm not saying they have no sherry-influenced casks available, and I think some special releases do include such, but I suspect they're not used for their 3x 12's, the 14 (which also includes a French Limousin oak finish), and the 18, and perhaps also some other of their standard releases. The LL site's section on their cooperage says their rechar casks are all ex-bourbon.

man I found the 21 to be amazing, shocking it didn't hit you like that, 7 would be crazy low for my reaction to it. For the $160 I paid I feel like I stole something, it's that good. I found it to be EVERYTHING I want in scotch, I really tasted the age on it, I found it to be super rich and very well balanced. The 16 I also found to be very strange. It's definitely unique but there is a weird note in it that I'm not sure what to think about, it's novel but I don't know if it's delicious. I found that weird note to be a sharp almost chemically floral note, VERY floral. The only other bottle that I've found this note in was a cask strength IB of Glen Garioch. Same weird sharp floral note that's both unique and intriguing but also kind of off putting. It's almost like citronella, that kind of weird, sharp, chemically citrus floral thing. The 16 is a strange bottle I wonder if it'll change as it opens up. But man that 21 is a winner especially if you can get it at $160 like I did, I found it to be everything I want out of a 21 year old scotch.

    • @WhiskyUncorked
      @WhiskyUncorked 19 дней назад

The 21 is a very good whisky to be sure. A 7 means I enjoyed it quite a bit, just hasn't floored me....yet. There is still plenty of whisky in the bottle to do so. I don't include price in my score for the very reason this bottle presents. It's not the same for everyone. I hope it can stick at $160 for a while, at least for those of us lucky enough to get one at that price. Cheers!

Great reviews. The Scapa 16/21 is/was $60/$160 near me (California). Being the other notable distillery on Orkney Isle, I've been very curious about trying them. But when the time came to decide, I ended up passing on them both as I'm juggling a self imposed very limited whisky budget for 2025. Happy to hear your thoughts. This was a detailed review and all your notes rang a bell with me as I kept going, "I've tasted that note" or "I know what you're talking about". It was enough to (almost) vicariously drink them. But I bought it from a UK website! Interesting.

Has Glen Garioch recently installed a worm tub condenser? If not then they're still using shell and tube condensers, from the info. I've found online. The only Garioch I've been able to try so far is the 12 which I very much enjoyed.

You are correct. I honestly am at a loss for words because I checked the Malt Whisky Yearbook after I spun the wheel and would have sworn it said it used worm rubs but I see that is not the case. Thank you for the correction. I will pin your comment. I wish I could remember what I was looking at.

Nice picks of whiskeys, ARRAN 10year old is very good. but BUN 12 year old was disappointed with, unless I bought a bad bottle.

It’s hard to say about the bad bottle/batch variation. I’ve reviewed a few bottles now that I thought were poor examples of the expressions. It’s unfortunate, but part of the experience I suppose. The Arran 10 is a great buy so no arguments there.

Which bottles have a “Twiggy “ peat smoke? Last I had something like that was an older version of HP 12.

Hmm... I am trying to think of something I would describe as "twiggy". Maybe like a green wood smoke? Meaning wood that hasn't dried out yet and is still "wet", so the smoke would be more of a cold smoke. If that is true then I agree you would need to look off of islay. HP could be a good option as you mentioned, or maybe Benriach? But I don't think I have used that term before. I'll have to look out for it.

Hi, RUclips has been showing me your videos. Then Roy gave you a shout-out, and here I am, and probably quite a few others here to subscribe. Looks like quite a bit of content I have to catch up on. Cheers
