Well, this is concerning since service centers already struggle with basic repair. I wouldn't want my battery to be worked on by my local shop.

So, EVs are not maintenance-free like manufacturers advertised? The problems are just different and may be more expensive.

Your disclaimer ruins the whole reason why I tuned in - this vehicle does not have the original battery. 400000 on the original battery would be impressive. 250000 on a battery that died is average. 180,000 on the current battery - ok, you have another 70000 to go?

Honest question. When they take apart the battery and replace a few bad cells and charge you $5K, do they have a guarantee that more of your cells won't go bad over the next 50K miles? My worry is that I have a few cells go bad because they are getting to end of life with 200+K miles on them and pay to get them replaced and then I drive it for a little bit and more cells die so I spend another 5K to fix the bad cells, then I drive it a little longer and loose more cells. After 3 failures it would cost about 15K which is the same amount as a new/manufactured battery. If I don't go more than 150K miles on those repaired, then it would have been more cost effective to get a new battery that would more than likely go 200K miles for the same price as it cost to go 150K miles.

Yes alex and after 100 miles this battery will explode only because LI ion has this bad reputation of exploding after a while. Im not saying you do a bad repair. But as soon as you opened a 200k miles battery... You end up giving total new warranty for life for who ever had it repaired. And imagine The battery will explode and kill the driver and ocupatnts? You will be paying for that mate.. You opened the bomb and given extended life time warranty for it. That is why nobody opened batteries and also sleep well at night. You are not to well educated. or simply ignorant.

I cannot believe they are willing to open a battery and start messing with cells. I can only imagine what the insurance is they have to pay! Once you touch a battery and God forbid something happens with it, the manufacturer will jump into overdrive insisting your service caused it. These lawsuits could turn into millions of Dollars. Man parks his Tesla with a repaired battery in his garage which sets his 850k home on fire and he gets out of the house but not his wife and child. This is easily a 5 million dollar liability. If it was caused by the repair, particularly if the repair was especially shoddy, I would imagine negligent homicide (criminal) is on the table as a possibility. Probably not likely, but negligent homicide does not require a criminal act. 3 dead children and 2 severely injured firefighters can invoke enough outrage that there is a ton of pressure on the DA.

TBH those numbers are not really all that bad in comparison to an ICE vehicle. I have a 2020 Chevy Silverado that had a coolant leak from heater core from factory, took to dealership and was quoted $5,000 to remove and replace it, a stupid heater core! I replaced an engine in a 2006 toyota tundra and it cost me $10,000 and the truck rusted in half 3 years later! We must take into account the reliability of a repair to an EV is going to be far greater than the reliability to a ICE vehicle simply because ICE vehicles are far more complicated and their industry has over decades engineered the vehicles to break down more often to support obsolescence and parts supply industry where they make more money.

If there is a fire after such a repair by a 3rd party which is not approved by Tesla will your insurance cover the damage? A very important concern
