Curtiss Wright CW-21 Interceptor - Part III: Gathering Storm in the East Indies
Finally back with Part 3 of this series on the Curtiss-Wright CW-21!
This episode is the first of two that make up the third part on the CW-21 Interceptor in the Netherlands East Indies. The ML-KNIL’s situation in the interwar period, the role of colonial fighters, and the CW-21B’s design improvements are all covered here together with Dutch defence plans for the East Indies and how those evolved from the mid-1930s to the very eve of war. Like Episode I, this is a background video setting the stage for the next episode. This took a great deal of time and intense efforts working with archivists in the United States, in the Netherlands, and in the Netherlands, as well as video restoration ex...

    Thank you for these series of video's. I was quite pleasantly amazed by the original color recordings of the CW21b!! I am doing a 1:48 model of a CW21b and the camouflage colors of the ML-KNIL at the time are known as "jong-blad" and "oud-blad". I have a Dutch manual from the time, but the colours are faded. I wouldn't trust colour film from then all that much. What I would look at is the museum pieces that are available now. I would say that extra paint in the tropical environment to protect the metal would affect shades as much as a light paint job that would be more susceptible to the sun. Hope you share the model when you're done!

    First of all congratulations for the nice video ! Now i would like to address a few things: The correct anachronism for the romanian royal Air Force in the WWII is ARR(Aeronautica Regală Română) . The FARR is a wrong therm brought up by an editor of a romanian modelling magazine. The definitive book on the subject is the : Vânător : Romanian Hunter by Radu Brînzan by mmp books. And on the comments about the cockpit being too far behind: the IAR 80 was at the beginning designed to use an water-cooled inverted V12 engine; the Junkers Jumo 210. But as the germans didn't want/could/would deliver the engines it was switched to an radial engine IAR 1000A ( licence build Gnome&Rohne 14K) . This is why the cockpit was moved behind. A fun fact : many us airman flying over romania took the IAR 80 as Focke-Wulf 190.

    • @TheWarbirdMistress
      @TheWarbirdMistress 2 месяца назад

      Thank you so much! I've seen the acronym FARR so often, I've just taken it for granted. I think I've only seen it. I wonder how that even started then, really. You'd think it wouldn't just come from a modelling magazine. Thanks for the hint on the book. I have another volume Brînzan wrote. It's in English, part of a series, and only 130 pages. I also own Dan Antoniu's book on IAR and I'm looking forward to his book on Grupul 7 Vânătoare if I can get a friend in Romania to send it to me.

      @@TheWarbirdMistress well, the modelling magazine was also a publisher for quite a lot of books. That's the way the therm got widespread. Just give a search after Modelism publishing. As about the Brînzan's books the early one doesn't include new findings. The one by mmp books is a lot richer in photographs an information and where possible documented every airframe. The Antoniu book is ok, being quite old . He has a French edition which is much better. As for his latest book , not even I could get my hands on it and I live in Germany.

    My jaw is on the floor at the level of research that went into this video, and it is just one in a series! Regarding the CW-21 in Asia, this has to be THE definitive video. The military context around the defense of the Dutch East Indies is certainly one of the "lesser-known" aspects of World War II. I wasn't aware of how early the Americans and British had basically agreed on the "Germany First" grand strategy. The obscure, hard-to-obtain footage in this video is also very impressive. Now I want to learn more about it all. The military situation as early December 1941 was beginning was so grim for the Dutch East Indies. The home country was occupied, royal family evacuated, the Japanese would be on the way to replace the lost American oil imports, and Japan's population was enormous compared to what the Dutch could field, along with a huge disparity in military equipment. Defeat was inevitable.

      Thank you so much, and thank you for your support in helping make this all happen! Finding footage not seen since it was shown back then was a highlight for me, indeed. I worried about the delay it put on publication, but I think the trade-off of a month waiting was well worth seeing her in flight! I have found no records or mentions of the film that I did find, by the way, and that footage was on physical film until I ordered it; so, if you haven't seen this video, you haven't seen that footage. I'm scouring media catalogues from 1941 and 1942 CLOSELY for any potential new footage: trust me!

      Honestly, it would have been a great export fighter in numbers but if only a little earlier. By the time it was out and polished, the Curtiss Hawk was the export fighter for the world and Curtiss was making a mint off her. If the Interceptor was put out in 1936, it might have been the bridge fighter between generations people were looking for at the time.

      @@TheWarbirdMistress AAH! but as you said that if the Army brass hadn't said and dreamed that the bomber always gets threw. Which they didn't for the most part, because I just watched a video of the most shot down aircraft by the Germans and the B17 was in the top 5 and the B24 was in the top 10, so that didn't work out very well. Then Curtis Wright would have started work on it sooner and maybe it would have been out by 1936 to sell it to countries that wanted a cheap interceptor. Which would have done more for the US economy than any of the government programs. We need to sell our products overseas to get our economy going. But just like tanks the army didn't want to talk about them. Then throw in the politicians and it was nothing but a mess. But good story and can't wait to hear the end of it.

      @@donaldgrant9067 True indeed, except that export fighters to developing nations would not be facing anything out of Douhet's playbook, nor would the forces of nations in unique positions that demanded an inventive approach to air policy. Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Finland, pre-conflict China, and other nations of that sort all come to mind as potential customers of a cheap fighter. I'm wondering, however, if engine tech was there.

      @@TheWarbirdMistress Yes I agree, just a statement on how dumb it was to stop these exports when they could have helped us out of the depression. We could have also exported tanks but the army didn't want them either. And that leads me to the statement that our leaders, no matter military or government, are stupid.

      @@RMJTOOLS I believe the only model he has from Curtiss-Wright is the CW 19. Similar origin, but it's not derived from the 21 nor is the 21 derived from the 19. The CW 19 can be said to have grown into the CW 22, and the 22 did borrow much from what was learned when developing the Interceptor. If you look at the Curtiss-Wright catalogue, you can see which design team led to what designs and how they were influenced over time.

    Extraordinarily well understood, and presented. Well done. You clearly understand the old “doctrines and politics” in play at the time - Perhaps still alive and functional. I’ve spent a lifetime in aviation, and viewed/ heard many presentations on numerous aviation related subjects - I kid you not, this is truly one of the best I’ve ever come across. Congratulations on laying all this information so unbiased, and correct. A lot of uncomfortable truths here. Thank you - Stay Safe and Be Well.

    I appreciate the background information in this video even though most of it was background and not on the CW-21B. Context is important for full comprehension of how disastrous the period December 1941 to November 1942 was for Britain, Holland, the USA and the other allies in the Pacific. China and Burma had it rougher for longer. Despite the hype from navy, army and air force personnel, 20th Century wars are not fought in a vacuum as if sea battles, land battles and air battles take place on different planets. What happens to an air force when the supply of bullets, bombs and spare parts are cut off by the enemy's navy? Or if the airfield is overrun by enemy troops? I learned a thing or two, filling my goal of learning something every day, thanks to you.
