Once upon a time the music charts were graced by weird and wonderful ‘novelty’ records but sadly these are now few and far between. Whilst many of these were complete rubbish, many were actually rather good - this channel is dedicated to celebrating these records.
Some of these tunes are pure novelty records whilst others are perhaps just tongue in cheek. Others are perfectly serious in their intention but can be considered 'novelty' because they are true one-off's.
The majority here were released as singles at some point, though not all.
Suggestions welcome!

The Pipkins - Gimme Dat Ding (with lyrics)
This was a worldwide hit in 1970, reaching number 7 in the UK chart, and number 9 in the US.
I only discovered recently that this was co-written by Albert Hammond, the song writing legend that has written successful songs for dozens of singers and bands, particularly from the 1970s through to the 1990s. He also recorded in his own right, most notably ‘It Never Rains In Southern California’ and (a favourite of mine) ‘The Free Electric Band’. He was awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2000.
The song’s lyrics apparently relate to a conversation between a piano and a metronome. The metronome has had its bell stolen and is therefore of little use to the piano, hence it wants its ‘din...

The Worzels - Don't Look Back In Anger (Oasis cover) (with lyrics)
Просмотров 6728 дней назад
I heard this on the radio last week and I must admit it had previously passed me by - but it’s great! A cover of the Oasis hit, this version was released as a CD single in 2002 and reached number 59 in the UK charts. It is taken from the album “Never mind the Bullocks, ‘ere’s the Wurzels” which was an album of similar covers of various artists. The Wurzels are a novelty band that formed in the ...
Cream - Mothers Lament (with lyrics)
Просмотров 39Месяц назад
From the 1967 Cream album ‘Disraeli Gears’ which reached number 5 in the UK album chart. Variously described online as either a traditional folk song or written by Ginger Baker (drummer), it is in fact neither. It was written in the 1940s and earlier recordings can be found, some of which have several more verses than this version. Critiques also describe social observations but I believe the t...
Harry H Corbett (Harold Steptoe) - Your Baby Has Gone Down The Plug Hole (with lyrics)
Просмотров 59Месяц назад
I remember singing this at school after it was made famous by supergroup Cream, appearing on their 1967 album Disraeli Gears which reached number 5 in the UK album chart. The song was titled ‘A Mother’s Lament’. For years I thought this was an original composition and even now there are critiques online which (a) attribute the song to band member Ginger Baker and (b) read significant societal m...
Rick Dees & his Cast of Idiots - Disco Duck (with lyrics)
Просмотров 3062 месяца назад
Released when disco was at its peak in 1976, this reached number 6 in the UK singles chart and made number 1 in the US. Rick Dees was a Memphis DJ who was forbidden to play his own record. Indeed, he was subsequently fired by the station that employed him for even daring to refer to it during one of his shows! I’ve done my best with the lyrics and am fairly confident apart for one line which I’...
TISWAS presents The Four Bucketeers - The Bucket of Water Song (with lyrics)
Просмотров 5643 месяца назад
The Four Bucketeers were the main regular presenters of the kids TV show TISWAS, a largely unscripted, slapstick and slightly anarchic programme which was hugely popular from 1974 to 1981. Chris Tarrant has confirmed that the word TISWAS stood for “today is Saturday, watch and smile”, though the word also appears in the dictionary as ‘a state of confusion or disarray’ - which is also apt! The F...
The Wombles - The Wombling Song (with lyrics)
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.3 месяца назад
The Wombles were a novelty band from the 1970s fronted by composer, Mike Batt. This is their first single, being the theme music to the children’s TV programme which featured the Wombles as creatures that lived on Wimbledon Common and collected litter. It reached number 4 in the UK charts in 1973 and the follow up, ‘Remember You’re A Womble’ did even better reaching number 3. Over the next 4 ye...
Jimmy Cross - I Want My Baby Back (with lyrics)
Просмотров 3584 месяца назад
This song was originally released in 1965 and was a minor hit in the US. I don’t know if it was released in the UK, but if it was it never charted. It is a parody of teenage death songs of which were popular in the early sixties e.g. “Leader of the Pack”, which is referenced in the lyrics. It became well known in the UK in the mid-seventies when DJ Kenny Everett ran the ‘World’s Worst Record’ p...
Morris Minor & The Majors - Stutter Rap (with lyrics)
Просмотров 2885 месяцев назад
Released in 1987 as a parody of the Beastie Boys’ “No Sleep Till Brooklin”, this reached number 4 in the UK singles chart. Yet another great record that wouldn’t pass the PC test today! For those under a certain age, and those outside the UK, a Morris Minor is a successful car built between 1948 - 1971 (sometimes referred to as a “Granville-mobile”). The band were: Morris Minor (Tony Hawks), Ru...
Laurie Anderson - O Superman (with lyrics)
Просмотров 4657 месяцев назад
Although not a novelty record per se, this record is certainly novel in that it is one of a kind and thus deemed appropriate for this channel. It is also a favourite of mine. It was released in the UK in 1981 and reached number 2 in the singles chart - no mean feat for such a unique track and which received relatively little airplay on daytime radio at the time due to its length. I have no idea...
Pluto Shervington - DAT (with lyrics)
Просмотров 2 тыс.8 месяцев назад
A quick tribute video to Pluto Shevington who sadly died on 19th January 2024, aged 73. Released in 1976 simply under the name of ‘Pluto’, this was his first hit, peaking at number 6 in the UK singles chart. At the time there was much discussion as to what the lyrics meant (or indeed what they were!). I’ve done my best to decipher them, with online help, where I found some disagreement and I rec...
David Bowie - The Laughing Gnome (with lyrics)
Просмотров 3048 месяцев назад
An early David Bowie single, originally released in 1967 as a novelty record. It failed to chart at that time, however, after his later success it was re-released in 1973, this time reaching number 6 in the UK singles chart. Its biggest success was in New Zealand where it reached number 3. Bowie also provided the voice of the gnome, with his studio enginer providing the voice of brother ‘Fred’....
Susan Christie - I Love Onions (with lyrics)
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.8 месяцев назад
This is the original version of this song, released in 1966. It never charted in the UK and was only a minor hit in the US but did better in Canada and Australia. Later covered by Laurie, a version which appears elsewhere on this channel. Originally I featured that version as it was less well known, however, this original is also great so I thought I'd list it too. I also made a better job with...
John Otway - Bunsen Burner (with lyrics)
Просмотров 20710 месяцев назад
Punk rocker John Otway released this single in 2002 and it reached number 9 in the UK charts, though I only recall hearing it on the radio once. Based on ‘Disco Inferno’ by the Trammps, released in 1976 and later made famous by appearing on the soundtrack for Saturday Night Fever (though not strictly speaking a parody of that track). I’m not sure what the inspiration for John Otway’s ‘Bunsen Bu...
Rene & Yvette ('Allo 'Allo) - Je T'Aime (with lyrics)
Просмотров 38011 месяцев назад
Gordon Kaye and Vikki Michelle as the characters Rene and Yvette from the BBC sitcom ‘Allo ‘Allo which aired in the 1980’s. This is one of the best parodies of the Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin song, which had earlier reached number 1 in the UK despite being banned by the BBC at the time. Sadly this version only reached as high as number 57 in 1986. Gordon Kaye died in 2017. For more like th...

Marvelous! Sounds like a tune straught from the British Music Hall era. Song was revived in 1968 by Judy Carne.
So Fred said let's have another cup of tea and we said right-o!
I ❤ my Midland MXT500

A personal favorite, thank you!
We used to sing this at school in Scotland in the 80s! In fact, we loved it so much that the music teacher said "Once more, and that's it for the year!" Thanks for posting this!
Paid $0.99 for the 45 when it was popular. Can't remember the B side. CB radio was the closest thing to today's internet chat. We had a blast.
Love this cheers me up warms me up to no more winter allowance 😢😢😅😅
Brilliant!!! Except for a woman’s needs are ‘many fold’ NOT manifold!!!!

Loved this little ditty in the 1970s, great memories!
Here because of Dr. DEMENTO!!!
Lol "slip the blood to me, bud" never heard such a flippant request for such a lifesaving procedure... 😂😂
What's the "Huh, huh" sound you're hearing during the crash sounds? I was curious about this my whole life.
Cult
It's like Twin Peaks
Superb, I loved every second
A fun novelty record! A No. 51 Billboard hit in 1968.
can he read?
One of the many many reasons I’m proud to be a Brit
OMG I LOVE THIS!! 😂😂😂😂😂
Song refers to Paul McCartney. "I don't exist"
Befitting tribute to McEnroe, who's on court tantrics were as unique as his tennis talent.
Just FYI: McAll recorded two versions of this popular hit. The version you posted is typically included on cds, but the version that appeared on a 45 rpm in 1976 was better.
That's interesting, I didn't know that. This indeed comes from a CD though it sounds the same as the song I remember from 1976 to me. I also found the 7" played on RUclips and couldn't spot the difference. Perhaps different versions were released in different parts of the world? I'm in the UK. I've also posted the movie version - I didn't used to like it so much but it's grown on me over the years!
@@loljukebox7263 Apparently I've started a war on this in the last few days. The album "23 Truckin Hits" contains the remake, and credits Convoy to "Tommy Hill Music Festival". While the low pitched beginning vocals ("Dark of the moon on the 6th of June") suggest it was the real McCall who did the vocals for the remake, the fact that the album credits McCall only with the original version suggests that the vocalist in the remake is somebody else. If so, it sure had me fooled!
Rebel radio ahhh song
My 18yr old son couldn't believe we sang this at middle school when I was a kid. Great stuff, I always remember laughing a great deal at school, no wonder why 😂
