We love our 2021 i3 BEV which has 150 mile range, more in summer. We use it for short journeys around town, rarely needing the whole range. We charge at home using the BMW 10amp granny charger, a 13amp socket and off-peak electricity. Unbelievably low cost transport!!!

We got a perfect i3s after quite a long search. We wanted exterieur color black, interieur style "suite" with leather etc., little mileage and a young vehicle, but still with the large navigation system "professional" which was later discontinued due shortage in that time and the rear camera, which a lot of vehicles lack. Now we have it, and our long search was worth it. You just have to be patient, as always.

the new Chinese made mini is hideous inside and out, it is also way over priced, future sales figures in the uk will soon confirm this. buttons rather than touchscreens all the way for me.

Honestly, given that you weren't even that efficient with your driving by going at 70mph, this is really good advert for the Mini and its efficiency. Once manufacturers start to really focus on this, the costs per mile could get to spookily low levels My hardest challenge was a 200 mile trip to Belgium on a roughly 20kWh battery. 5 charges just to be safe but each one was either under 20 minutes or a longer one done while shopping. Most importantly, the rapid charge rate at Powerdot stations in France was about £0.40 per kWh. At an average 3.5 miles per kWh with charging being £0.6 (I know that I was more efficient than this and spent less on average, but let's pretend), the 200 mile journey cost under £35 - or 17.5p per mile.

All great until the DRL burns out which is a known issue on VAG cars. Just been quoted £2200 to get one headlight replaced! Not sure it’s worth the trouble

For 2 speed gearbox - you can put the car in sport, and suspension in "normal" and it only goes in 2nd gear after 90 km/h. Consumption goes up, the difference around town at low speed is massive though.

No, they're not. Theyre beyond awful. I've been driving ID3s for 2 years and the buttons are absolutely terrible. I also drive Golfs with proper buttons and they are much better -in a different league.

However cheap they are on the used market, they have the same issue as a used Ferrari. Servicing costs (and insurance costs) are going to be epic. Plus what's that I hear about a new recall that can result in battery fires due to short circuit?

It is just to ugly to even consider.

Any idea how to get version 5.0 like the German versions of the same car? ChatGPT integration and the improvements to how the information is displayed looks useful. Just for context I don't own the car yet, but if it is not going to come with or be able to update to the latest software I will be quite disappointed. I was watch videos and was excited by the features. I am getting an ID.7

The Jaguar i-Pace is way cheaper and much better equipped and much more practical. I mean a 50% discount on the Taycan. It charges much slower but it’s actually not that bad - it all depends if you make a lot of long trip or just a few times a years. The Mercedes EQS depreciation is also Taycan like and while it is 25 centimeters longer it’s even better on long trips and much more practical. And for these who want a cheap driver’s EV, many reviewers mentioned a few years back that the Jaguar i-Pace was the second best driver’s EV behind… the Taycan.

I dont believe that the SE has a hattery heater. I drastically increase winter range by used a timed charge that ends at my departure time. Charging warms the battery. I've seen 4+mi/kWh driving through snow doing that. Once the battery cools down, range drops quite a bit. Around freezing, I get low 3s.

I have heard that the battery can suddenly die on the i3. How true is this and how much of of an issue?

I bought a pair of these 'miracle' spectacles which are constantly advertised on RUclips. I wish I had not bothfpered, In my opinion they are cheap poorly made plastic rubbish. A complete rip-off.

Excellent video - thanks for doing it. i just got a 2014 BEV and love it. I didn't know what to look for and wish I had seen this video first. Although, I think I did OK apart from the dreaded broken heater and failing heated seat. BMW software reliance and the ability of the dealers to take your money very quickly for any service is the only downside. Wisely are very reasonable for booked up for months unfortunately.

Hi Martin. I really like the mini electric. I have a 1.5 petrol 3 door at the moment. I only cover around 4000 miles a year, and rarely do a long journey, so after watching this video, it has helped me decide to take the plunge next year, and buy one! I've watched quite a few of your videos recently, including the BMW i3 ones. Although they have a larger battery on the latest ones, its still not a Mini! 😂 My question is, what type of battery does the mini have? Is it ok to charge to 100% each time, or best to cap it at 80%? I will be charging at home, on my drive. I'm just going to install an outside plug for the moment, and use the 3 pin plug charger. I really enjoyed this video and it shows a small ev, can do long journeys, if you plan it right. 👏

We found a black 2017 94Ah with alloys, which was very reasonably priced and well-equipped, perfect car. Not an i3S model, but get a cheap OBD plug and the Bimmercode phone app, each about EUR 30, to simply unlock the sport mode already featured in the S. The motor mounts were improved by 2016, so occasional use of sport mode with its added torque should be safe. We plug it in at night and when you finish, the display shows around 190 km range, or maybe 160 km indicated in very cold weather. This number then goes up once you drive off and the battery warms up, and this is in the Comfort Mode, the least economical. You can also preheat the battery if you have the heat pump. The car is pleasantly quick (0-100 in 7 sec) but, at a 160 km/hour speed cap, not an autobahn stormer (which was not the intent). No shifting gears, direct-drive to rear wheels.

I got the i3s and the ride is diabolical. I definitely wish I’d gotten the i3 with the 19” wheels. The extra performance of the i3s is pointless.

Agree with you on the upsides of carbon roof over the sun roof. One upside to the sunroof though is you don't need to worry about the bare carbon fibre delaminating, which seems to happen sometimes.

I bought my white 2019 i3S in April 2024 after watching and rewatching just about every video you’ve done. Bought it with 25k miles on the clock and immediately called Wisely for advice on which charger to buy, but Arthur gave me short shrift for not buying it from him, so I’m still trickle charging it. Thank you for all your open and transparent advice and a Happy New Year to you and your Mum 👍

Wonderful video! People are so funny. So many have forgotten to enjoy the drive and the trip. Yes EV ownership is a change of mindset but so cheap to run for 90 + percent of daily commute and errands with home charging. One could also rent a car for long distance travel or use a long range EV if you have. Also diesel Stinks!!

Hi Martin, my second comment on this video. I know you have worked on i3’s a lot, so I wondered if you could do a technical video covering a couple of niggles I have with my 6 year old i3. I have a rattle and water leak from the driver side door glass, it looks like the glass has ‘slipped’ down by a few millimetres. There are knocks and clunks from the front end over bumps, I’m pretty sure it’s not the suspension, I made some improvements to this by dressing and securing the battery coolant hoses under the left wheel arch, but it does still clunk a little, particularly when it is colder outside, and almost completely goes away in the warm months. Your insight into these issues would be most welcome.

Thank you for this video. We are now 18 months into our ownership of a 2021 i3S and remain very happy with it. It’s well equipped and the range is adequate enough for our needs.

Hi Martin, greetings from Oxford. Love the work you do covering i3’s. I bought mine new in 2019 in mineral grey, I kept the options to a minimum, the upgraded audio (because I love music and good sound quality) and the sun protection glass. Now at just under 50k miles. Love the car and plan to keep it for a long time.
