hi Martin. You have given a clear explanation about the updates of the ID series. Since today software 3.7 is installed in my ID.3 First Edition. Have a Nice day 👋
Successfully updated to V3.7 on Friday night and all seems good on my ID3. Just had to turn off the lights as you mentioned. Interesting about the bidirectional charging (which I get on my 77kWh battery), and to see the prices for compatible wall-boxes, and when energy companies allow it. I see Octopus Energy discussing it at the moment
I have an ID5 from 2022 with software 3.2. I already got the mail to allow the OTA. I wonder if VW could at least add the Battery Temperature in the dashboard (potentially in replacement of the outside temperature which is already indicated in the infotainment) ultimately it would be great to be able to trigger manually the preheating of the battery in the winter on a long trip prior to arrive at a charger if it is not possible to have the car doing it automatically if the navigation is planning a charging stop. Beside of that I am very happy with my car. Consumption in the summer is around 14 to 16 kWh which is very good.👍
You have to be a very clever geek, and probably far more intelligent than a VW dealer technician, to know to recalibrate the window regulators before being able to install a software update. Who would have been able to work that out? I presume Martin that the 3.0 and 3.2 software updates have not brought about any menu changes, faster responses or better graphics but in your experience is the software on the ID vehicles with the new larger SatNav/Infotainment screen much quicker and easier to use? Just a pity that VW have not been able to work out how via a OTT update they can change the haptic controls to a more intuitive interface for drivers. I cannot help but think that the old i3 iDrive controller and its somewhat limited software features made life easier for us oldies.
VW did themselves provide the window calibration instructions back during the early 3.0 waves. 3.0 ota was a big improvement for us, it made the infotainment smoother (but not quicker to start up) and the car more efficient. The main 3.2 improvement for me was just putting driving consumption data in the driver display.
11:55 MY2024 vehicles do not have a completely different hardware, the SoC is up-reved with 2GB more RAM and 8-12% boot in clock speed. The module changes is software fix for navigation to control battery PTC heater, which rest of the fleet need BTW. Also the new UI is just a skin, it runs on an onboard webserver the decision to not to improve UI yet is not because it’s not update able.
5:37 Heads-up, OTA update checks are done on the day your CarNet module was first commissioned by VW. No there a specific way to see your day of the week of commission. Also on this day you need to drive 9 miles at least before the update will begin download.
The smaller battery got the charging rate improvement with, or 2.3 for cars that came with that from factory (that jncluded our car). The larger battery got the charging rate improvement with 3.0.
5:37 Heads-up, OTA update checks 7:47 Also after successful install you will not get a push or email notification. You just need to give the car amble time. There isn’t a way to know if the update is complete, notification email gets sent after you unlock/access the car after the update.
Right now updating to 3.7, activated the update in the car and now waiting while the car that are standing in the carport updates. This is my second attempt, my first attempt failed, now i parked the car slightly outside the carport, then it has only two “pins” (4G) and now and then only 1 pin inside the garage, maybe it caused my failed attempt. I was afraid that i was not offered the update again and needed to go to a dealer, to get it, but as i wrote, its offered again, but not instantly, my failed attempt was 14 days ago and now its offered again, so the update system, recognizes the missing 3.7 update and offers it again. It says 210 minutes for the update, now just waiting, hopefully it will succed this time.
I live in Germany and have just recently updated my (German) ID.4 to ID. software 3.7 on Oct. 30th. Everything went smooth. My ID.4 is from April 2023, has been delivered "ex works" (out of the factory) with ID software 3.2, and I probably have installed ID software 3.5 over-the-air meanwhile (which is still displayed as 3.2 by the ID software app, so I am not 100% sure). The update to 3.7 stated it would take 210 minutes, so I did it overnight and it was able to finish. Note that you will need a high voltage battery charged to 50% SoC at minimum, otherwise the update is not displayed and cannot be installed. There is some more information about the 3.7 update for Skoda Enyaq here: ruclips.net/video/XPVFreH_gwg/видео.html (Electrified Speicher: Update on the update to Software 3.7 ..."). As both vehicles share the same MEB platform, the information may also be relevant for ID.3/4/5 drivers. One problem is mentioned, together with a fix: If you charge using photovoltaic spillover (?), after the update you may have to reset the onboard charger once (by removing and replacing the fuse), otherwise the car will not wake up after 20 minutes of too little power for charging. I did not experience this problem myself; I did not experience any problems with the update to 3.7. I think the UI is more responsive, and some people say the consumption (kWh/km) may have gone down after the update. Happy driving!
Hi Martin, interesting and useful video. Two questions: does the cellular data service for online mode require payment, like a mobile phone? I’ve always wondered that about cars that offer a WiFi hotspot. Secondly, could you, perhaps in another video, explain the benefits (or not) of the B mode?
AFAIK the cellular service for the car itself (traffic data, OTA etc) is free, but if you want to use the hotspot of the car you have to pay. And the short explanation of B mode: it's more or less what other cars might call "one-pedal mode". As soon as you let go of the gas pedal (or press it down less) the car starts to recuperate quite aggressively. Though from the little driving I've done so far (ID.3 owner since Saturday) it's not quite enough to get you to a full stop quickly, so for a full brake (red light etc) you still have to use the brake pedal.
@@MattHale121 Thanks! I did do a short test drive and liked the id 3 but you know all the doubts potentially going electric and all that. Probably Model 3 is the better EV/software but don't need the performance or the... drama for lack of better word?
I really love it! Much more than I initially expected. The software can be a bit slow, but completely fine in the grand scheme of things. Definitely improved compared to where it was 3 years ago when they launched. If you are buying new, even the base Model 3 is objectively a better car, but used, the value of these ID.3s is hard to beat. (There is no way I would go back to an ICE.)
My ID.5 is already running 3.7, so I wonder how much higher I can go?! I've noticed that 4.0 runs with the smaller screen set up, so I wonder if that could be an option in the future?
No. I contacted VW Germany about this as on Reddit a lot of people had the same question. Their reply was: "We kindly inform you that the 3.X infrastructure cannot be upgraded to a version of 4.X or above." Since they're now on a new version/platform (both software & hardware) my best guess is that we might see important security updates but no other updates (or features). At least I'd be surprised that they'd still invest resources in the 3.x At first I was disappointed as with these modern cars you'd expect to receive updates like on a phone, laptop, etc. for years to come. However, my previous car had no updates and I was still happy to drive that one around. I've also heard and read that the initial 1st gen. ID3s had bugs, but mine has ran fine on 3.7 for months on end without any issues so can't complain.
I got the orange “update information” button on my ID4 but since I was parked temporarily outside a shop I didn’t want to start the installation that would take 212 minutes. But now when I’m home, I no longer see orange button. how do I now trigger the install? 😅
I'm sat in my house. The car has been updating outside for about 4 hours. How do I know when it is done ? Really can't understand why the answer to this simple question is not made abundantly clear by VW.
3.7 arrived on my ID3 1st. Installed it yesterday (210 minutes update). Now, it tries to install the manual, but doesn't succeed. Also unable to display the software version. Can not be loaded at the momemt. Please try later. Any idea what to do?
We bought a 23 month old 1st Edition in March 2023. It came with v2.4 software and a replacement battery but that failed almost immediately. The battery was replaced again. The car went to a VW agent in December 2023 and was updated to v3.2. They had the car for 4 days. V3.2 seems just fine. Do I really want to upgrade further?
I think there is no rush to update if you are on 3.1 / 3.2, but given the updates are free and over the air, then why not? Even if it's just bug fixes, it's nice to see continued support for a product.

I assume the same process will be available on other models, such as the latest Tiguan right?
Great video, Martin, super clear.
Very userfull tutorial! Thanks.
Q: how did you manage to have your photo on your user page in the infotainment system? It looks realy nice.
Got this today on my id3 first in the Netherlands. It is now installing...

@@NiyaKouya Thanks for the information.
Obvious software issues aside the id3 seems to be a good car? If you buy used should all be on software 3 by now if the car was serviced?
It’s a good car, should ideally be on 3.2 if you are buying a used car at the moment.

Yes. All ID.3s ever made have support over-the-air updates (as long as they have been brought up to software version 3.0 by the garage).

I didn't get any notifications. I believe if the car is mid-update it won't unlock until it's completely done.
Thank you.
Same here Angela, in the UK. Had the email about 2 weeks ago.
Thanks
My vehicle had an 3.7 update and it said it would take 210minutes, now 24h later the car is still locked😱
That's not a good sign. Hope you got it sorted.
