However, if you watch on, you’ll see what the island looks and so...

It is said that the Garden Peninsula got its name because Native Americans living in the western UP would travel here to plant their gardens because of its rich soils and favorable weather. Great video! For future reference - It’s pronounced “tuh-KWOM-uh-non” - not “tuh-KWON-uh-min”.
Don't get me started on pronunciation, lol! It is probably more about enunciation. With a mix of Native American, English and French, our place names can sound quite different. There are also regional dialect differences between Yoopers, Michiganders living south of the bridge, and our neighbors in Ontario.
It is a shame only three people have viewed your video. It was most creative, the music fit your photos beautifully and the content very worthwhile. We will experience these places in the very near future. Thank you for your perspective. Well done.
Thank you! 😊 It has 60 views right now. My video views range from a couple hundred to more than 10,000. I can never figure out while some videos get tons of views and others not so much.

Definitely, great history in a scenic spot!
Spectacular. Was just added to my bucket list for autumn 2024.
Have a great trip! If you haven't already, make reservations ASAP.
@@AVisceralLife Thanks for the advice. I imagine it's a very popular adventure at that time of year.
@@DavidBrown-dj7tw It is much less crowded after Labor Day, but transportation reservations can still be tricky.
Just got back from the island.. the poem on the birch bark is still there.. it was one of my favorite writings in the shelter… but liked many of the same ones you shown .
Wow, I can't believe that it is still there! I'm heading back to the Isle in September, but I am not planning to hike through Moskey Basin.
thanks for sharing. found your adventure moving... peace
Thanks for watching and following the channel!
Great video, We are planning a trip to the UP and are looking for fun hikes. How young of children do you think could do this hike? We hike often so they are accustomed to several miles/hours long hikes with decently steep areas along Lake Michigan lakeshore dunes. We’ve read of the rock scrambles, what we saw in the video appeared doable is that pretty representative of what we would expect?
If you hike up the south trail to the summit, there isn't much of a scramble. If the kids are used to hiking for a couple of hours, they should be fine. It is an out-and-back trail, so you can always turn around. Have a great trip!
We just got back from our trip. We did roughly 12.5 miles in the Chapel/Mosquito area of pictured rocks two days earlier. We opted for the North path and the girls really enjoyed the rock scrambling. We brought a lunch to eat at the top. The view is amazing. It was a clear day around 80 degrees at noon when we got up there. With the wind up there it felt great. There were some mosquitoes in the beginning and end but it was definitely worth it. Thanks!
That is awesome! You did two of my favorite hikes. The Escarpment Trail at the Porcupine Mountains in the western UP is probably my next favorite!
We will have to do that one on our next trip to the UP, we are planning on doing the western half next time. Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing your adventure in such a beautiful place. And I love your daughter's music.
Thanks, I am headed back there again in September. It is such a magical place. I passed your comment onto Aspen and she said thank you!

Nicely sequenced and good videos
Glad you like them!
Miners falls! Before 2015 I had never seen a waterfall in person. Since then I have seen many from Niagara to Tahquamenon, Miners is still my favorite.
Very nicely edited! It is a truly beautiful place
Aspen’s music is haunting. Love it.
Thanks Erik!
At the beginning of this video you stated, "It is not a fancy movie, so if that is your desire stop now." You were incorrect sir. I found every minute fascinating, beautiful, and quite frankly... fancy. Enjoyed it immensely.
Thank you so much! I am glad you liked it. I already made reservations to go back again next summer.

@@AVisceralLifeHogback is awesome. Do you have any second place and third place hikes that you like in the UP?
@jimknarr At Pictured Rocks, the Chapel Parking to Chapel Beach along Superior to Mosquito Beach to Mosquito Falls and back to Chapel Parking Loop. Also, I live hiking the Escarpment Trail above Lake of the Clouds at the Porcupine Mountains. Those are my favorite day hikes.
@@AVisceralLife Agree!
Hi do I need to reserve a spot to camp there?
It is a good idea to reserve spots ahead of time because camping has become very popular and available sites are often limited. Online reservations are really easy to make. Go to: midnrreservations.com/
No, but it is recommended.
Nice . Thankyou .
Thank you!
Thanks for the memories! I grew up in Illinois and enjoyed touring Lincoln’s home and grave in Springfield. Check out Hannibal, Missouri if you can. Another fun midwestern historical town.
Funny you should meantion Hannibal, it is my next video. It was an unplanned stop based on a highway sign.
Love exploring these types of historic areas...learn so much. Thanks so much for the tour...excellent! Bruce and Otis
Presque isle not eel...think island or "iyal"
I was going for the more French pronunciation.
@davidrounds3245 Presque Isle (PRESK ĒL), ever been there? The river is pronounced like the French, who named it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presqu%27%C3%AEle
@@AVisceralLife All my life, grew up hiking there, fishing there and skiing the porkies.
@davidrounds3245 It is funny how Presque Isle is pronounced different depending on what location you are referring too. We have that situation with many places in Michigan. There is even a guide. LOL
Great sites except you have to deal with a bunch of rural Americans.. not ideal. Serious creepy vibes at this campground always
That wasn't our experience, but good to know.
Beautifully shot!
Thanks! It was one of those pictures/moments you think about and visualize for years.
How steep are the stairs to Lake of the Clouds viewing point? We have a 12 year old dog who cannot climb steep stairs.
You basically drive to the top. There are only a few stairs and if you go to the right there is a handicap accessible ramp/walkway.

We love Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. It is even better in the fall! The last time we visited we overnighted at Indian Lake State Park, which allowed us to stop by Kitch-iti-kipi on our way up to Union Bay Campground in Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. We went the first week of October. Unfortunately, that is Bear-hunting season so Konteka can't feed the bears during that time, so no bear watching when we stopped by there. The mild downside with fall camping there is that it seems like it is much more popular, there were a lot of people there. We never got around to the Nonesuch trail, we decided to skip it after being disappointed in the Union Gorge Falls (lack of water on that waterfall). Too bad you didn't have a chance to catch the waterfalls along the Black River Scenic Byway, they are very nice, and all short hikes. It makes for a great day trip. We didn't attempt the Escarpment trail either, as we figured the climb would probably be too much for us. Nice songs!
I have been there in the fall several times. One year my wife and I rented a backcountry cabin and another year I was tent camping at one of the Outpost campsites with my friend Kevin. It was so cold when Kevin and I were there that our water bottles froze. Lake of the clouds is gorgeous in Autumn! Thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment!!
@@AVisceralLife We actually had unseasonably warm weather during our last stay. It got into the 80s! People were swimming in Union Bay (not a lot of people, and not for long). Unfortunately that meant the black flies came back out, but not until later in the week.
@@Cleo_and_Mark As they say, if you don't like the weather in Michigan just wait, it will change soon!
I am Blessed to live U.P. here. Winters are insane, but when it's all you know...it's just "another winter"...however, as everyone here says..."You HAVE to do it in the Fall". Anywhere in the U.P, in the fall is super busy as well..it's just too beautiful!
AND...hit Oswald's Bear Ranch in Newberry....the Spring is the time for that one..it's when the cubs are born, and you can hold them. So, so special.

Gorgeous. I've heard there's lots of Datolite up there!
Maybe, I am not sure
Man, those areas like at 8:18 I'd have to break out my folding chair and just sit there for a few hours. That's prime woods there. 👍
They definitely are, but you would probably want to wear a headnet. The bugs can be pretty bad during some months.
Nice video. Very informative. One thing people should know when staying at Porcupine Mountains is that nearby is the Black River Scenic Byway where you can visit up to five very nice waterfalls within a few miles of each other. We stayed for 10 nights at the Union River semi-modern campground in our tent last fall (October, 2021). Aspen has a beautiful singing voice.
Good tip and thank you on Aspen's behalf for the complement on her singing. Thx, Ken
I did enjoy ur video.....thank U!
Thanks for watching!
Is that your daughter singing an playing guitar? If so very nice voice and playing guitar!! Enjoyed learning about the granite statue!!! TKY!
Yes, but it is one of her older songs from 2018. Her song "The March" starts with a British field march from revolutionary war time period, so I thought it was appropriate for the history hike in Boston. Aspen's studio recordings can be heard at: ruclips.net/p/PLXzjZ-9jd1m9RQeJ0N9htHetl7gSHzKT8

My gosh the amount of work you put into this video. You really covered the whole area.. It was like watching a Documentary lol. Shocked you don't have more attention on it. Im heading this way in the beginning of October hoping to get some fishing in. We booked the Rivermouth. We didnt know anything about the area haha After watching this video I almost wish we did the lower falls area... In fact my sister in law who reserved the campsites mistakenly thought the river mouth campsite was right next to the falls lol.
Thanks for the complement Dustin! My videos do take a ton of time to research, write, and produce. I probably spend more than twice the amount of time on the computer than I do in the field shooting them, but that's alright. The Rivermouth is actually one of my favorite places to camp in Michigan. You won't be disappointed! Take some coffee and drive right across 123 to the boat launch and watch the sunrise over Whitefish Bay. Have a great trip!
I really enjoyed this one Ken! Of course... the music is awesome.
Thanks Steve! Aspen and I both appreciate the complements. She has some new songs coming out soon!

Thank you so much!
Beautiful views at the summit!
Tganks! Wish we had more time at the summit this hike!
Very nice!
Thanks Chris!
I really enjoy some of these more rugged footed trails as they seem to be less crowded...at least that is the way it appears to be here in Nova Scotia. Such grand views! I bet it would look pretty colourful in the fall...thanks so much for sharing your adventure and hope you all have a wonderful week! Bruce and Otis
Yeah, same here in Michigan. The more traffic a place gets, the more developed the trail becomes. It makes sense because the area needs more protection with more traffic. I find the length of a trail really affects how many use it. Once you get over a mile into the woods, the less people you see. We actually saw one other person for less than a minute who arrived at the summit after us and left right before us in this hike.
HOLY WHA!! You two got huge kahuna's....and HOW are you only in a tshirt and shorts and not being eaten alive? Thanks for the tool...holy wha I got tensed up in a few spots! This was awesome!
In my family, the bugs prefer my wife, son and daughter Aspen. So, I can be comfortable knowing they will attract all the bugs and keep them away from me. I also used bug spray and as long as I keep moving, I am usually ok. One of the reasons most of this video are shots of us hiking away from the camera is because Aspen could not stop moving, or she would be eaten alive. So, I would have to hike back to the camera on a tripod after each shot. Luckily the bugs weren't bad after we started climbing away from the flatlands and after the rain came.
@@AVisceralLife holy wha eh!
