Replace a spoke without tyre removal with this 3d printed tool

If you need to replace a broken spoke, but not the nipple, you either need to remove the tyre and/or insert, or risk the nipple falling into the rim - it’s a fiddly and frustrating job. I couldn't find a good tool for this job so I’ve made one and now it's a super easy job. Let me show you how it works, how I designed it, and how you can get one for yourself.     I didn't see any information on nipple washers when I ordered the 541 today.

      It doesn't look like you ordered the rim(s) from us, however the nipples and washers should be included -TT

    I was riding my mtb once and after doing an uphill section, I found my rear wheel had a broken spoke and the upper cassette bent really bad. I have no idea what happened, I assume I hit a rock somewhere on a downhill and didn't notice. 😮

    I had an 18T ratchet in my hub and replaced it with a 54T ratchet. DT Swiss does not recommend this type of ratchet for my e-bike. However, when riding trails, the combination of the drive unit and the hub led to a lot of free stroke before engagement. So I was told to buy the EXP OS, but they only had ratchets with lower engagement points of a maximum 42T. So I decided to just ride the hub until it breaks.

    My trek 2024 powerfly 4 gen 4 hard tail e bike keeps on breaking rear spokes I dont do jumps higher than shin height. I've never done a tabletop nor will i. Its a e bike hardtail. Warrenty claim on rim. Its been 43 days and Trek cant supply one until Jan 6 2025. I cant even get them to supply more spokes. 14g 295mm . How can you make a $6500 NZ bike gear built to last on their web page and not even have spokes ? Not even 1 and ive been told there are no other rim upgrades for this model.......😢

    I have the older 350 6nut one. It doesn't spin for long, what could be the culprit?

      It doesn't spin when in your hands or in the fork? If in your hands its likely the endcaps are binding - put the thru-axle into the hub and this will align the endcaps. If its not spinning in the bike it's likely to be the bearings are worn out. -TT

    At aliexpress already arrived a DEG copy for road hubs and straight pull spokes ))) But with 6802 and 15267 bearing at hub body for low weight. Btw, what do you think about small bearing life at rear road hubs? Such as DT 180 1526DS/6802NDS. Is it ok for 70kg rider?

    As I'm aging I'm needing a bit easier gearing to climb up hills. Where I live it's all up and down. I have the 9170 group and was using an 11-30 cassette. I got myself an 11-32 Ultegra cassette which turns out to be all the help I needed. But, The eTube APP doesn't recognize that cassette therefore will only report the cogs that Shimano designed into the Dura-Ace compatible range. The cassette works perfectly and I wish Shimano would fix this so my Garmin would give me the correct gear ratios in the data screens.

    I wanted to make sure. You said in 3:30, that dimensions of Ratchets are the same, but only on the cassette side, on hub side are different. So, I can't install EXP 54, instead of OS 30?

      Correct. There is no way of putting a set of 54t ratchets into the Hybrid model hub -TT

    I have 240EXP and I can't be happier. After two years I decided to replace the freehub body mostly because it was dented and that was impacting gear changes. I installed another DT Swiss free hub body - only this time with ceramic bearings. After months of usage all I can say it is: there is absolutely no noticeable difference compared to stainless steel bearings. If anything they'll wear slowlier but I'm yet to discover if that's the case. The only other difference is I've shaved off a few grams, but a very small amount, probably my 240 now weigh like the 180 hubs. That's all. But I don't think it affects my performance either climbing or on flat terrains.

    Hi, Nice clip - Also, sweat & road salt will easily corrode Aluminium nipples. Often evident on the rear wheel more than the front. Keep up the good work :)

    Odd question now. Straight spokeholes on the hubs, and change position on the spokenut to the hub. A grooved bead to the rim for the loop, or perhaps a coneshaped end of the string. Could be some savings weightwise on rotationmass. And neater look on higher rims, 45mm and up. Will be a bit fiddly to tighten spokes at the hub i guess, bikenerds are a masocist lot 😂. In my deranged brain i often think outside the box how to do things a diffrent way. Perhaps its only 10-15 grams in gain? What this is in watts at racespeed, people that know that feel free to share. 😊 Best regards from stockholm One day i might afford a set of these wheels.

    in my opinion it's a lot sophisticated, compared to a 350 from DT, but the pro5 is the only one rear hub available in 12x142mm with 36 spoke holes..

    I have a DT370 ratchet hub on my Pivot Switchblade and I thought I was big pimpin', lol. Entry level, but it's got a nice and quiet 18t ratchet in it with straight-pull spokes, so it looks good. If I had new wheels built, I'd have a hard time not going with 350 hubs. They just seem nice a reliable/strong while not really being heavy.

    DT's DEG hub service video shows the driver body seal being removable/replaceable. Not sure how available it will be though.

      There is no part code on the DT Swiss website on in their techdocs. It's certainly a *removable* part but I don't think you'd want to! -TT

    I have seen no hubs fail as much as industry nine. Probably 5-6 catastrophic failures in the past 8 years. I have seen the hub flanges crack free of the hub body, ratchet rings cracking and getting stuck, pawl springs cracking and of course, axle failures. I would love for these hubs to be strong but the reality is, they are not.

    Should I use FR541 for front in a DH bike that's being used extra aggressively ? I got a dent in the previous rim FR950, hitting a rock, enough for air to start leaking.

    Odd they went with XD and not XDR. This rules the hub out from gravel duties with Sram XPLR cassettes.

      They now have an XDR freehub body option and freehub bodies are interchangeable across the "gravel" 142x12 and "mountain bike" 148x12mm hubs. -Tristan

      This is partially true...straight pull are cheaper to make and at the OEM level where you're buying 10,000 at a time they're slightly cheaper. They often become more expensive at retail because they're often proprietary and the brand can therefore charge whatever they want as they know you need one -Tristan

    you mention exp bearing life how much difference is there from the original 2 floating ratchet models?

      Bearing life is pretty hard to measure but we're certainly not seeing the 'lasts years' bearing life like the classic hubs. Some chew through bearings in a matter of months, others seem to last slightly better. -TT
