Michael Brandsegg-Nygard - Potential Detroit Red Wings Game Wrecker
In this episode of The Two-Line Pass, I'll breakdown Detroit Red Wings (#lgrw ) 1st round pick from the 2024 NHL Entry Draft (#nhldraft2024 ) Michael Brandsegg-Nygard. I'll take a look at what traits the Mora IK alum brings to the table - including a couple very pro-ready, advanced features. I'll also piece together something of a scouting report on him as well along the way.
This isn't intended to be a highlight video, as I'm sure plenty exist, but rather a shift by shift breakdown of his tendencies and potential upside.

    Nygard is one solid dude for a younger guy. Saw him play in the Wings rookie camp on RUclips, and he is built like a Mack truck in the lower half. I don’t want to compare him to Peter Forsberg, but Nygard could be that type of guy that’s really hard to get off a puck and move around.

    Good video. I would add something that people don't consider is his weight. They say he is 211lbs. That is pro player weight already. Most players his age weigh around 180lbs. When you get hit by a player of that size it makes a difference.

    You hit the nail on the head with the fact that there are finnish goalie coaches training russian goalies. The finns get a crazy good pay for it and that's why they do it. I could argue that beacuse of that, finnish goalies aren't necessarily any more the best of the best, luckily there are exceptions.

    • @two-linepass
      @two-linepass 7 дней назад

      Absolutely Kunitz was more cerebral than average. You can't kick it with Crosby all that time and not be intelligent - it's not easy to play with him and his expectations. Also, Ryan Getzlaf was quite the cerebral playmaker himself and Kunitz did very well there too. Definitely a plus in the hockey sense department there.

    Another great video, I would love to see a video detailing some of the terms you use. What’s the difference between a game breaker and game wrecker? And what players fit that mold? Is it a play style thing or productivity thing as in top 20 players are game breakers and top 30-50 guys are game wreckers? Thank you for the amazing content as always 🤲🏿

    • @two-linepass
      @two-linepass 7 дней назад

      Thank you, first of all. Second of all, absolutely a play style thing. Productivity can vary too much depending on circumstances - but play style is relatively constant. In short, with "gamebreaker" - we're talking about dynamic, creative skill and, certainly, that should result in some degree of productivity. With a "game wrecker", we're talking more about a menace to society. A forechecker that causes d-men to fill their diapers (see: the Kunitz hit on Timonen, for instance), a backchecker that puts such back pressure on that second wave attacks fail to materialize, and a guy that outworks you to pucks and outworks you near your net to put one past you. Tom Wilson could wreck a game in his own way, Patric Hornqvist could wreck a game in his own way, Claude Lemieux could wreck a playoff game or two, etc. Not necessarily guys that blow you away from a skill and skating perspective, but have a noteworthy impact.

I'll be curious to see what they do with him to start the year, I also agree he should start in the AHL, and think fans who want him with Sid straight away are bananas, but I am more bullish on him than you!

    • @two-linepass
      @two-linepass 10 дней назад

      I don't mean it to be "harsh", but I also want to be realistic about what his game looks like on the ice relative to expectations of him playing in the NHL in a few weeks...there are definitely pieces there, there are scalable parts to his game...but I don't think he's ready now and he doesn't have to be. That's where Pittsburgh's development staff will be instrumental in how this goes. He's more of a B prospect than an A prospect for me, I'll concede that much. And that's basically how he's been for me since his draft year.

  • @jasongardner8678
    @jasongardner8678 10 дней назад

    Great video, completely agree with your assessment of his skills and projection. I didn't see him as a first rounder in his draft year, and it seems he hasn't taken enormous strides (pun intended) to improve some of the areas that held him back. Still very reliant on his shot and his linemates being able to get him the puck in the O-zone. Despite his impressive point totals, I'd be shocked if the production translates without some major improvements to his game. Okay but real question. Will Sullivan use him at all? Probably not

    • @two-linepass
      @two-linepass 11 дней назад

      When he's ready, I'm quite sure he will. Not many coaches in the NHL give young players a shot in big spots like Sullivan. He hasn't had any young players worth playing in a number of years now (as we can see, a lot of guys that folks pined for can't make worse teams). Playing undrafted players with Crosby in the playoffs ("Cros and the Kids" w/Guentzel), Maatta playing 20 minutes as a youth - he hasn't really gotten back to that usage, Murray over legacy Fleury, Dominik Simon got plenty of time here and nowhere else, Marino played a ton right away, ZAR's entire NHL career was thanks to Sully, etc. - the Penguins are one of the flagship development teams in the NHL and probably the worst at drafting. Pittsburgh gets more games out of undrafted players than drafted players over the last 10 years. That may never be duplicated. It certainly isn't on Sully. None of those guys do anything in other organizations either - Calen Addison wasn't qualified by league-worst San Jose last month, he was the bell cow of the games played and points of the last ~10 draft classes haha

  • @jp783
    @jp783 12 дней назад

    I'm thinking the two main criticisms I'm hearing and watching from this video is: A) He's not yet able to see and read the game fast enough to be a top 6 player in the NHL at 17 years old, and B) In large part due to A, his decision making is not where it needs to be to play in the NHL as a 17 year old. Fair enough. And while it is up to Eiserman to get the requisite experience and practice diligently, consistently in order to build those aforementioned skills; it is also, certainly, up to the Islanders hockey ops to teach/instruct/develop said player, as well. Let's actually see this hockey ops develop a forward to become a top 6, regular 1st PP type of forward. It's WAAAAAAAY overdue.
