2013 Vstrom 650 off road test, through single track and the creekbeds, of the emulators and Anakee wild tires I installed earlier this year. I did not even lower my tire pressures from what i ride with on the street and they performed fantastic over everything and the emulators performed flawlessly. All the noise you hear are rocks bouncing off my Altrider skid plate and my rear luggage bouncin...

Part 1 of the video at Wellsville, which was my first time there, with a wobbly camera mount and mud clogged tires. I was on my 1996 yz250 and the other guys i ride with on a 1976 DT400 (which he is the original owner of the bike!), a 1984 yz250, a 1999 cr250 and the quad was a Honda 250ex.
Vstrom 650 Emulator Installation

Video on installing Gold Valve Emulators and drilling out damping rods. Check out my video of my off road test of these emulators! ruclips.net/video/HhmTbkIDLZE/видео.html
An easier way of installing is to place the new pads on the caliper attachment bracket, either side if the disc, before installing the pin. Check that the floating ends of the pads are located in the spring tabs then lower the caliper over them and install the pin.
Useless info you have no idea stop giving people bad information
You're so smart. Never thought I'd come across someone so intelligent. Oh rear brake master, teach me your infinite wisdom on this excruciatingly complex job. My brakes must have not been working the last 50k miles
Hey thankyou so much for this video it has to be the best v strom rear brake no frills video on you tube this is how you do it . Ive watched a few times and done my own pads this morning you make getting it all back together look so easy😄 i had a bit of bother but got there in the end… could you do one on changing the brake fluid .. 👍 Thanks Dude you saved me some pennies 🏍️🏍️🏍️🏍️💪
No problem! I haven't made videos in years after youtube screwed me over. Thought about getting back into it
Great video looks simple enough!
Excellent Video. Save me lots of time.
And what about the springs.
Great video, much appreciate
FYI svriders.com has an argument between whether or not you should drill out additional holes in the damper rods and weld close the rebound holes. I'm no expert, but if anyone else is doing this mod make sure you've read all the info.
One thing missing from this video- the factory exhaust!
Very good explanation many thanks 👍
Woah, that was easy. Thanks for making the process a little less scary for us first-timers!
2:59 headphone warning!
Never let the caliper dangle off of the fluid hose, this places undue strain on the hose. Always support the caliper with a wire hanger off the muffler or something.
I will use the emulator valve on my versys x 300!
8:06 - Bless you! One question: You said that you are using stock rear shock. How much do you weigh (in full riding gear) ?
Thanks! I'm 200lbs but I did replace the stock rear spring for my weight.
how you set rebound? with 7,5 w oil, there is no rebound there. if front wheel hit the uneven surfice in the corner at high speed on tarmac, alah u akbar.
Fork oil weight is only part of the equation for tuning your forks. Different types of forks/valving will require different weights. 7.5 was recommended to me and it's worked perfect. 40k miles on it now without a problem.
I'm having a problem with my rear brake sliding bolt/pin the Allen head bolt one after I did all the work it started to come losses and it calliper wobbles even tho the bolts are tight.
I would disassemble everything and look over it again. Check your threads to make sure the bolts didn't cross thread which could make it feel tight but the bolts aren't all the way home.
Hi great video. How did you know the size and quantity of extra holes to drill?
It was part of the instructions that came with the emulators. If I remember correctly it had a drawing with the dimensions.
U left that calf with heart's dancing in her eyes,,,,hope ur steal having fun,,,,,gb
Sure am! Hopefully I'll be able to head back down there this year for a ride. Might load the Strom and the new GasGas up in the truck.
thanks, I would not put grease anywhere near brakes though.
You should. Just don't get it on the pads or rotors
@@coffeeandcarbide98 with the heat at the brake pads that copper grease could end up anywhere
Nice
How much would you say the emulators help with street riding? Are they installed with the stock front springs, or did you upgrade those?
+Michael B I upgraded to the recommended springs for my weight. I didn't bother accounting for gear as I mentioned in my other comment. The emulators definitely helped with nose dive and gives you a more firm, planted feel in corners on the road.
So you think the emulators alone do the job? In other words, the stock springs are good enough? At 165 lbs + 15 lbs gear + 30 lbs luggage/accessories it was recommended by suspension tuner that I add these emulators, 10 wt oil, and keep the stock springs (aftermarket springs being too stiff for my weight).
+Michael B The emulators do their job quite well. I'm 190 lbs so that's why I upgraded my springs. Remember when you load up gear most of that weight will be over the rear wheel. I have overloaded my vstrom to the point that it was extremely hard to keep the front wheel on the ground when accelerating so the forks weren't even loaded except for braking. (It was an interesting 600 mile journey).
What springs did you use?
Michael B I used RT springs and calculated the spring weight off their website. I used their website for my yz250 and strom for springs and revalving recommendations also and have been satisfied so far with the results on both bikes. As I said before I only calculated my rider weight. Remember 80 Percent is the rider and 20 percent is the bike. Use your judgement for what you need. If you feel your bike is underperforming make the changes. If you feel your technique is inadequate you should practice more. Don't spend more then you need to
Ta, fella. 👍🏻
Sorry, you did a louzy job... The piston was very dirty, you did not cleaned it at all, the steel platesc on the capiper mounts were not cleaned, only greased, very little grease in the rubber gromets, and the disc was not cleaned with brake cleaner at the end. I took apart all the calipers, deep cleaned the pistons, now they look almost like new, fresh brake fluid (TRW dot4), cleaned all the steel plates and greased with Foeorch copper grease 1100 degrees C heat resistance grease, mounted everything back, used a whole spray of brake cleaner, now my bike stops like never before. Please, be more carefull next time, your life is precious, if you did the same thing in the front wheel, I don't know what to say...
+Lucian M I only threw this video together for the basics. That's why I stated follow all procedures and the video is just a visual reference. If it was someone else's bike other than my own I would have done a thorough job. I actually use an ultrasonic cleaner to do everything. Brake cleaner will destroy anything rubber and I've seen alot of people have premature brake failure from spraying brake cleaner everywhere to clean. I go through rear brakes alot riding offroad and I've already done them again since this video. I will admit I didn't do a great job on this video since I was rushing. I ride in harsh conditions all year in even in the salt, snow, mud, sand and through rivers. When you do that kind of riding you eventually get lazy cleaning shit all the time and just fix it when it goes(which takes alot of abuse and neglect and it's usually mud that packs in on the seals that kills them while riding). Seals are cheap and they don't usually just fail all of a sudden they will leak first. That's just me though and I appreciate your concern. Also front brakes are a different story. I always disassemble and clean them in my ultrasonic cleaner when the time comes since those are your life line on the road. Have fun and stay safe out there!
That's more like it! But the sealings are not cheap (in my country, Romania), about 40-50 USD for the caliper. I don't like riding in harsh conditions, but when the rain catches me, spent about 2 hours to clean the bike. Not really a pleasure :D. Ride safe! Best regards!
thanks for the very good video
+frozen no problem!
Thank you for sharing.
+floss fly Glad I could help! I'll have more vstrom service videos up soon. If you need anything specific let me know. Thanks for watching.
Thanks a bunch!
+Taran Sanun No problem! If you have any requests on any maintenance videos let me know and I'll try to get them on here asap. Thanks for watching
I use ohlins springs 0.8N/mm, 2.5turns on RT valve, 10W Oil, and i dont put/use spacers betwin RT valve and dumping rod :) My suspension are superb :D
+pedrodkuhn that's great!
I think the adapter is for the valve not to leave the place when we are pumping the forks to get the air out. But a good professional like me knows how to do this without the valve leaving the place :P
+pedrodkuhn I just read from racetech that the adapter is used if the ID of the damping rod cup doesn't have a minimum of .020 clearance to the OD of the bottom of the valve. I'm pretty sure there is adequate clearance without the spacer but I didn't measure it to be positive. I'm probably going to replace the fork seals soon since they have 30k miles on them now so I'll measure the clearance so I can add that information on here.
I do not understand why you need the spacer. The gold valve does not fit on the Damper Rod?
+pedrodkuhn I'm not positive on why they use the spacers and I wondered that question myself. My thought was it spaces the emulator up to allow the correct amount of fluid to be underneath the emulator or maybe it's just to protect the brass emulator from rubbing in on the steel damper.
@@coffeeandcarbide98Hi, the spacers are part of the set, or were bout separately?
How many turns you did on gold valve screw?
pedrodkuhn I set mine at 1.5 turns with the 40 lb blue spring
I like the way the suspension handles now, it's way better than stock. I did a little offroad riding and some jumping too and it's very smooth and I have not bottomed out the forks yet. I also did a rear spring swap on the stock monoshock. I'm glad you liked the video! I should have more videos soon. Thanks for watching
Thanks for showing that. I'm about to do the same to my vstrom 650. How did you like the upgrade?
