Hiking and Amateur Radio adventures in the Pacific NW, including exploring various summits and parks.
This channel started with the idea of sharing summit information with other SOTA (Summits on the Air) activators, and to inspire others to keep learning (whether radio or other endeavors) and exploring (summits, parks, new places). Future videos will add reviews, equipment used and why, and more about Meshtastic devices (my current learning focus).

Sauk Mountain Hike & Radio | SOTA POTA
One of my favorite local north Puget Sound hike due to views and relatively easy ~4 mile and 1,100 ft of gain. It's a popular hike, so recommend getting there early on the weekend or mid-week. This was my 4th time hiking to the summit, and sure I'll be back a few more times. (-: Hoping the video captures a portion of the beauty and inspires you to hike this one (if you haven't already).
For "playing radio", I used the Yaesu FT3D with rollup jpole antenna for local 2m contacts, and the Elecraft KX2 with Wolf River Coil mini for HF. I was able to spot via web browser on my phone once, but struggled with AT&T cell service most of the time and was not able to post a spot.

Thank you Bob! Put a smile on my face this Christmas morning before heading downstairs to open presents! (-: I've been enjoying focusing on shorts recently and always nice to receive kind comments. Hope you have a wonderful Christmas day and New Year's! 73
Hi, I found your video very interesting. I live in Havana Cuba and in the last 2 years we are spending more time in blackouts than with mains power, For this reason. my son who lives in Canada. bought me a Jackery Explorer 2000 v2 and also 2 Redodo 12v 100ah batteries, as you know the 2000 v2 does not have the option to use batteries to expand. I am wondering if I could use the Redodo batteries to expand the battery of the 2000 v2 and what cables or converter should I use, also if I can use the solar panel power input or the DC plug. Any help will be appreciated, thanks
Thank you for sharing your story, and that’s awesome that your son got you a great power station along with 2 Redodo 12 100ah batteries. You definitely can use the Redodo batteries to charge or extend battery capacity of the Jackery 2000 v2. What I did for quick test was have cable attached to battery with 12V DC socket input, and then plugged the Jackery 12v DC charger into the socket. Another simple way is to use ring terminal on one end of a cable to attach to a Redodo battery...and then have a Jackery 8mm dc connector on the other end. This will charge the Jackery at ~80-90 watts. You could probably do this same simple cable for each redodo since there is 2 DC 8mm inputs and you may get approx 160 - 180 watts charging in. I don't see any simple cables like this on Amazon, but you could by a simple cable with Jackery 8mm DC input on one end... and attach ring terminals on the other end of cable to attach to Redodo battery. There are quite a few videos that might be more helpful in extending your power station more cheaply and this is one video example. In this one he uses a convertor to change 12 to 24v which will charge faster...but it's important to check what voltage range (and amps) the battery station can accept. Again, awesome you have the Jackery and these 2 batteries! Hope this helps a bit with some ideas. ruclips.net/video/Xv8KC2MfjGQ/видео.htmlsi=Uv38wjW5Vq_C7IDf
Wanted to quickly follow-up with a few options for using the DC 12 car style socket that came with your Jackery... With a 12 DC car style plug , you should get about 90 watts of power input to charge the Jackery 2000v2. This was the simple cable setup I used in the video... (having a ring terminal or clamp on one end, and Jackery 8mm plug for your model (varies for other brands/models) would allow you to plug directly to solar input and get same approx. 90 watts input) This is an example of a 12v DC socket cable with ring terminal on the other end to attach to your battery. amzn.to/41MUsiN This is another highly rated Amazon option that has DC socket with battery clamps. amzn.to/4gNOhQ0
@@wa7jnjradioHello, thank you very much for the quick response, it has been very helpful, I look forward to your next videos with great interest.
Well, you filled in what the LP video left out, concerning the access covers. Great vid...
Let us know if it's more difficult to change the oil with a smaller access hole in the new skid plate and also if it collects more debris with a no cover on access hole.
I just did my install without taking the wheels off, put on 9 inch ramp which gave me enough space to pull both access panels off. Also there is a small open space where another panel meets the front panel and no attachment point for the back panel. You might have a possible snaging of rear panel, Ill try to fabricate a strap to lift that rear point to keep from snagging on road objects. Let me know if you have same concerns.
Thanks for comments, and appreciate you taking the time to share! Awesome to hear your experience below about installing using 9" ramp and having enough space to install without taking both access panels off!
I haven't seen issues with more debris due to no cover on access hole, but I had limited off roads this summer. I have changed the oil a few times, and it's a bit more difficult to find the right wrench primarily to get oil filter off and then tighten. Overall not too bad, but a bit tight especially for the oil filter...
@robertthorn9560 I used 10 in. stainless steel zip ties to attach to a cross support , attaching the plastic back panel to keep from sagging and catching on road debris.
I’ve never heard someone reference this part of Washington as “Washington’s blue mountains”
AE5DW checking in. I found you via the RAV4 skid plate video. We just bought a 2022 RAV4 LE for my wife. Looking forward to checking out the POTA content. I've been bitten by the bug. Putting together a FX-4C POTA station right now. 73!
Don! Thanks so much for saying a quick hi, and awesome to hear about the 2022 RAV4 for your wife! I've just had mine for just over a year, and had fun creating this skid plate install video as something different than other SOTA & POTA content. For light off-roading to trailhead, etc. the RAV4 w/ Skid Plate has been great to have, and then the AT tire upgrade this summer helped with the Oregon SOTA roads. (-:. Very cool about being bitten by the POTA bug, and that you're putting together a station right now! Again, appreciate you saying a quick hi! 73, James
nice, i like it.
Thrilling! I worked AM on 2 Meters years ago but that was a local contact. Your cross-country QSO is one for the (log) books. 73, W6BOW

That was awesome! Glad you were able to capture it!
That's awesome you captured it and took the time to make this.
Thank you Mike... definitely fun to share, and loved hearing excitement in Fred's voice. I emailed Jake prior to releasing, and awesome he took time to make the QSO from a 767!
Thank You for sharing
Waited too long, but glad to finally share... Hope you have great rest of your day!
my new jackery 1000 plus was too flakey. did not thermo regulate well. kept dropping from 1300w ac input charge to 350w and wouldnt go back up. bluetooth app would lag many minutes. stuff like that.
I just got my jackery 1000 plus. Not happy w it. Am sending back and gettimg pecron 1500. More powerful cheaper. Addon batteries are like half price. Fyi i got 4 redodo 100ah and put the litime24v charger inverter at the head of them. Very cool. I have seperate redodo 2x50ah homemade powerstation for ham. 73s. KD9IRA
Good to know about Jackery feedback and Pecron 1500 as option. Awesome on getting 4 Redodo 100ah with litime 24v charger inverter...and also separate 2x50ah powerstations for ham...Very cool, and thanks for comments! 73, James
Fyi, get your battery to 24v going into the jackery and will double charge rate. Put two batteries in series or get buckup comverter
Agree on getting to 24v to double charging rate...definitely makes sense for faster charge.
20amp not enough. I got the 40amp
Agree with you... put the 20amp on my Xmas list and probably good for 1 50ah battery, but would be nice to have 40 for sure!
Thank you for sharing your experience and recommendations for SOTA activations. What type and length of antenna feedline do you prefer for VHF/UHF activations? De KC5EJT.
I usually keep as short as able... 6 feet generally (or 10' is what have on rollup jpole). I've usually used RG58 (maybe RG8X) for VHF/UHF... For HF ~15' of RG174 is mostly what I've used. Main tip is to keep VHF/UHF cable just as long as needed. (-: Hope this helps. 73, James
I’m curious how you have installed your radios in your Rav 4. Could you make a video, please. 73, Brian G8OSN / W8OSN
Thank you reaching out and asking about this...I've thought about making a video about radios in the Rav4, and your question will help made a priority. (-: I currently have a "temp" solution with mag mount on roof with Diamond dual band antenna...cable through rear door to Yaesu 500 radio under driver seat...with Lido suction cup mount holding Yaesu head unit to lower left windshield...and extension cable for mic which rests in the middle console. Will have to give more info in video, but wanted to share this quickly. I also have had a 900 mhz meshtastic antenna & device, but will need to rework that in future (-:
@@wa7jnjradio Thank you. I've not installed my radio yet. I plan to mount the antenna on the roof bar. 73 G8OSN.
How do you attach your mast to the ground? And does it need a ground plane if I'm using a mobile?
When using a mast for 2m (or HF antennas), I'll generally use bungee to strap mast to bush, tree, anything. Have crammed in rocks or held mast (if 2m rollup jpole) as well. Haven't guyed the mast, but just posted video of Adam K6ARK recent guying tip. Ground plane question - For portable hiking, etc. I mostly use 5w ht radio's when using rollup jpole on a mast and coax cable straight from antenna to radio. I've used a 50w radio a few times with this setup as well. For my mobile radio on car, I have antenna in middle of roof...and at times I've used a mag mount antenna on a metal cookie sheet as ground plane. Hopefully this starts to answer your question... appreciate the question, and have a great weekend!
Nice editing 👍
Thank you... been awhile since done shorts, and fun to learn how to fit in short time. (-: Have a great weekend!
Berry nice 👍
Dam good for you bro that’s a long way hay just a question I’m just starting out any chance you could give me a idea on building my antenna and what I might need sorry to ask thanks again for your time
Dam good for you bro that’s a long way hay just a question I’m just starting out any chance you could give me a idea on building my antenna and what I might need sorry to ask thanks again for your time
Thank you and congrats on just starting out! For VHF/UHF or "line-of-sight" frequencies I've done a video about antennas I use that would be good place to start. ruclips.net/video/6SxNHChLX-I/видео.html I haven't built any of these yet, but some do build yagi or rollup jpole antennas. Hope this helps to start...
Awesome! I need to re-watch and practice.
ducting + beams on both ends? Amazing eitherways
I'm sure ducting was definitely part of it... I had a directional antenna, but he was only using an extension whip antenna. Both of us used 5 watts. I've been on Devils Mountain multiple times and haven't been able to hear stations ~30 miles away when I didn't have the 2 meter band pass filter due to all radio interference on this summit. This was the first time I used a band pass filter and was surprised to get my longest vhf contact on this summit... Thanks again for watching and quick comment. Much appreciated!
Did you consider modifying your streamlight to use rechargeable lithium? Obviously the AA cells with an internal lithium cell and buck converter (btw, buck is voltage down, boost is up) to 1.5v would be quick and easy. I'd prefer soldering in a good cell and charging circuit. Your streamlight that uses 3xAA batteries could likely be reworked to use any single-cell lithium ion (NCM, ICR or similar) with a nominal voltage of 3.7v. The 3xAA is starts at 4.5v (3x1.5v) when new under load and is dead at 2.7v (3x0.9v). Use a protected cell or add a single-cell BMS. It will be dead at about the same voltage as dead alkaline and with lower internal resistance should perform comparably. There are little single-cell USB charging boards that could be added to provide USB charging. Some people try to fit in an 18650 cell holder so they can easily swap 18650 cells. The 3xAA holder could maybe have internal plastic and connections removed and a lipo sourced that would fit in the cavity. Other people try to use 14500 cells which are physically the same size as AA but with the higher 3v-4.2v operating voltage. One of those and a jumper wire would fit in your 3xAA holder, but would likely not provide sufficient runtime. Using 3 of them and rewiring the holder to put them in parallel would triple the runtime, but the cost of those cells is pretty high compared to an 18650 or lipo. If there is internal space then removing most of the AA holder and fitting a cell or parallel cells inside the light would likely provide the most cost effective runtime.
Firstly, thank you for sharing the information and something I had not fully thought through. I have been looking at rechargeable lithium AA batteries, but haven't purchased yet...and still mostly use NiMH rechargeables for lanterns or flashlight, or non-rechargeable lithium in certain instances. I do have various a few old 18650 that I've put together for "fun" to power a 12v ham radio...and obviously early in learning about buck vs. boost converters. Based on your sharing, I updated my video description regarding buck vs. boost. Thanks for all the info and something to think about... I know my wife, mom, and I love the Streamlight lanterns and have a few of them. (-: Thanks again for thoughtful comment!
Great job!
Thank you! ...and thanks for watching... appreciate the quick comment! 73
I love all my olight flashlights. Great products and great customer service. Another option would be the Anker Solix 300. Its $139 right now but its 288wh and has a lantern built in.
Glad to hear you love Olight flashlights as well, and I also love and have quite a few of them...and have given quite a few as gifts. (-: The Anker Solix 300 DC with light built in for $139 is an awesome deal, and one I recommended someone in our ham club to buy. He just purchased...and it's my next small ~300 power station purchase. (-:
Thanks for watching! Links and further info in video description. 11/29 update that I did buy the Watt Cycle 100Ah LifePO4 battery, and will look to get a power station in the future. As cheaper near-term option, looking to get a battery charger and 1500 or 2000 watt Pure Sine Inverter from Giandel next...
I opted for the Pecron power stations. I picked up a 588wh for $220 with coupons And also a e3600 w/ep3000 battery for $2300 The small unit will run our internet and wifi The large unit will run both refrigerators for over two days before having to pull out our little 2000w gas generator to recharge for 5-6 hours
That is awesome and sounds like great setup! I know "ReeWay Outdoors" did a recent "Best Deal" and "Best Overall" 2024 power stations and Pecron's were a few of his pics. That has to feel great to have this setup, and then be able to charge with generator in a few hours! Hope you had a great Thanksgiving, and thanks for watching and sharing about your setup!
Nice short. Assume you shot a Mormon with your 360 in landscape mode. Did you just crop the video in 9:16 to get a vertical aspect. I have done that a few times on my jet ski videos but with fast movement it no is harder to frame. Great job on this short.
Thank you! For this and nearly all my shorts using 360 video, I just use edited 360 video that I framed in 9:16 for longer form RUclips videos. Generally I don't need to adjust or center the video differently, but will shift video to left or right to center the original 360 video better. In this video, I also used keyframes at the start and end of turning from Obstruction Point road clip... at start I had keyframe little right of center and then keyframe at end to be more left of center. Do my best to not have to reframe original 360 in vertical for shorts, but have also done a few times if can't use "tricks" above. (-:
@@wa7jnjradio Following through with that plan to move to CO... 4 weeks will be back in the mtns with my radio!
I live on the coast of Washington State in Pacific Beach, WA. The wind was not near the 2007 storm. The low pressure was too far from the land (300 miles). The 2007 storm was right on the coast. I lost power for 7 days. People living up by Lake Quinault lost power for up to 30 days. FYI, You want to buy the power stations now instead of later. Especially not next year. This is the cheapest ever on power stations. I've never seen 50% off sales. 😮 Jackery is good but Ecoflow and Bluetti are better. Bluetti Elite 200v2 (new lease 2024) Ecoflow Delta Pro 3 (has 240ac outlet 👍) Jackery 2000v2, 5000 plus, 2000 plus, 3000 plus are all on sale. Stay away from anything Pro from Jackery. The PRO series are all Lithium NMC batteries with 500 cycles. In 2025, the tariff tax increase starts. Biden said 50% increase on all batteries and solar panels. Trump said up to or even higher than 60% increase. Today's $1000 dollar power station will cost $1600 in 2025. Hurry up and buy during Black Friday. 😊 If need expansion battery. Instead of 12v LFP (80 to 90 watts of charging) Buy the 48v LFP (bigger the better/ 100ah if you can afford it.) The 48v will charge at 670 watts. Much faster than the 12v LFP.
Thank you for sharing your story from the cost of Washington state! Great tips and appreciate the good info! Agree that Ecoflow and Bluetti are also good, and Black Friday sales are great time to get power stations and solar, etc. in light of previously announced or future tariffs on batteries and solar. Great info on expansion battery volts for faster charging, and I'm also looking at a 12 to 24 V Buck Converter which will be way to use any 12V... will update video description with a few videos on the topic. Thanks again for your thoughtful comments!
You only need to run you refrigerator for about an hour a day to keep your food safe
No, that's not true. The freezer can go without power for 36 hours if it's crammed full. 1/2 day it's partially empty. The refrigerator can only go for 6 hours Max before the food spoil. The refrigerator needs to be powered at least for an hour every 4 hours. If it's hot day. Run 24/7
@@wt9653absolute solid facts here. I dont why I see this “1 hour a day” comment so much… its simply not true
