Allotment of the Dead
Великобритания
Добавлен 23 июн 2013
I have been on my plot for over 10 years and in this time I have made many new "greenhouses and outbuildings" and I have grown many weird and wonderful plants, fruits and vegetables from all over the world.
I have added a couple of new "poison gardens" to my plot and currently have quite a few plants on my plot with the potential to cause harm. This channel will help to give some insight how to deal with these plants and make them a little less scary.
This channel is designed to give people some insight into my activities on my allotment and to hopefully help people with their plots and gardening. Especially if they are fond of the more unusual plants and vegetables out there. It will also give me an ongoing diary of my plot.
Please subscribe to my channel if you like my content. To get quick access to new content, hit the bell to let RUclips notify you of new videos when they come out. Please give me a thumbs up if you like the video, It'll give me the confidence to keep going.

Pumpkin Jam

I create a wonderful jam from some of the produce from my plot. This is a jam that is both sweet and savoury, full of warm spices and giving you a taste sensation for the winter months drawing in. This recipe is from Frogmom.com. Ingredients: 2kg Fresh Pumpkin Puree 2kg Granulated Sugar 2-3 tsp Ground Nutmeg 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon 2/3 tsp Ground Cloves 2/3 tsp Ground Ginger 2 tsp Vanilla Extract...
Lemon Drop Chilli Sauce Part 2
Просмотров 197День назад
It's been just over three weeks and the Lemon Drop Chilli ferment is ready to turn into a chilli sauce. I add just as couple of ingredients to make an absolutely gorgeous flavoursome concoction.
Halloween Garlic
Просмотров 14614 дней назад
Halloween the day for ghosts and vampires so the ideal time to plant the garlic. That's exactly what I did today. Planted four nice varieties of garlic. Iberian Rose, Swift, Rose de Lautrec, Violent de Cadours, purchased at the Autumn show in Malvern.
Late October Tour
Просмотров 11514 дней назад
Everything is dying, little by little, lots to harvest and plenty to do down the plot. I need to get my garlic in, start my giant onions and sow some more mustards and pak choi. Still don't want to uproot all my chillies but next weekend that might be taken out of my hands. I've usually lost all my chillies the first week in November. Enjoy my late October tour.
Carrot Harvest
Просмотров 13614 дней назад
I planted the carrots shortly after fox proofing the bed to give myself a fighting chance of getting some roots. Only problem is I made it too well so the bed didn't get as much water as they needed so my harvest is a little poor this year. Here's my musings on my crop this year,......... I have planted some new ones though, hopefully ready in early spring.
Clearing The Brads
Просмотров 16621 день назад
I've not had a good year for tomatoes but I do have some Brads Atomic Grape, plants now past their best and time to come out. I clear the tomatoes, harvest what I have and give myself a new growing space for kale, chinese greens and mustards.
Giant Onions and Foldaway Tables
Просмотров 44921 день назад
Time to plant some more seeds, mustards, lettuces and suchlike. A great help with this is the foldaway tables I made for the Aubergine House, they give a great surface to put the pots while we're in the depths of winter. As well as this I mention the Giant Onion Challenge, organised by Peter Trenouth, to try and grow some really massive onions. (type is Ailsae from Fosters seeds www.fostersseed...
A Walk to the Plot
Просмотров 10221 день назад
I take a walk to the plot, a mere half a mile or so away from home, a trip I should do more often on foot but with the ease of travelling by car that's generally the go to! Listen to the ravings of a mad man as I take a stroll through the local neighbourhood,............ I'll do it again and show more of the neighbourhood next time! LOL
Frost Damage
Просмотров 109Месяц назад
This was filmed on Friday 11th October, a couple of days after we had an artic blast that brought sub zero temperatures into the UK. Could this have been the cold snap that would kill my chillies, would my plants stand up to the chilly air around them. Come and take a look with me as I see for myself, whether my chilli season has officially finished.
Targu Mures Chilli Powder Part 2
Просмотров 90Месяц назад
Part two of the video where we make chilli powder out of fresh Targu Mures chilli peppers. This is a variety from the Transylvania part of Romania, an excellent chilli with a really good depth of flavour, ideal for making a powder that is like a hot paprika. This video covers end of dehydration, grinding to putting into the storage pots. Enjoy!
Targu Mures Chilli Powder - Part 1
Просмотров 99Месяц назад
Still finding lots to do with my enormous harvest of chillies. There is a variety of different heats, flavours and sizes and this video tackles the first part of turning some Targu Mures chillies, a variety from Transylvania in Romania, into a gorgeous paprika like chilli powder with enourmous amounts of flavour. This video covers harvest to getting the peppers onto the dehydrator.
October Tour

A Tour around the plot in the cool weather of early October, plenty of plants have succumbed to the lower light levels and the cooler air but there are still a lot of positives.
Jason have you thought of doing a chilli challenge? I know someone who would be delighted if you do. I hope he won't want his lights back😂
@JR-zo3hb that might be a good idea, perhaps choose a variety and see who can get the biggest yield. Aji Nortano is a good one to try, big plants and lots of big pods.
Sounds good @@Allotment-of-the-Dead
Just subbed to all on your list thank you happy gardening Richardx
@RichardTaylorgardening no worries Richard. 👍 good luck.
Jason welcome to the #GOGC2425..I think I would also be happy to grow a personal best, let’s see what happens 👍👍
@@GanggangPeanut I'll be happy with anything. Lol
@ 😂😂😂
Best of luck Jason mate, Onions arent your thing so you will definitely get a buzz watching them grow, Becauzse the temperatures are due to drop it may be beneficial to put a propagator lid over the onions or a fleece. Well done on the 900 subs mate. We are expecting sleet here on tuesday but no snow forecast. Love hpow lit up your garden is. 👍
@@Jimmy.Plot.41.b cheers Jimmy, I've been having a think about fleece and things. I'll see if I can find my propagator lids.
@@Allotment-of-the-Dead mine down the allotment are inside of 2 proagators but because of the cold spell we are forecast i covered them with a fleece this morning
@Jimmy.Plot.41.b I'll cover them tomorrow.
What a cracking video Jason, considering onions are not your thing, I really appreciate you joining in, and also sharing seeds around. I did watch you on Danny’s channel the other day and thought you came across really well. Like you say just growing a personal best will give you such a great feeling. I’ve still got some seeds to give away if you know anyone else that needs them, they just need to email me. Again massive thanks for joining in and your plot looks really cool with all the green lights. Take care and best of luck with the challenge.
@@Petetrenouth thanks Pete, really appreciated. Fingers crossed 🤞
Congratulations 🎉 on reaching 900 subs and good luck with the onion challenge. I am having a go at it too. I will be delighted if mine even survive and amazed if they get to tennis ball size. Going to break the news gently to my husband, that I have borrowed his chilli growlights 😂Jane
@JR-zo3hb lol, that's why I'm doing it without lights, my growlights are for my chillies.
Hi Jason. Good luck with the challenge. Elaine 🧅🧅🧅🧅 ps, subscribed! 😁👍
Hi Jason. Good luck in the challenge. I'm not participating but will be trying my best to grow some nice eating onions next year. I'll sow on or around Boxing day I think. All the best. Mags
@mygardenanddinosaurs thanks Mags, if I get a couple of nice onions for eating I'll be happy.
Congratulations on the 900 subscribers 😊🙌. I'm not holding out much hope of snow down here, probably just rain as usual 😂.
@@debz_vegplot cheers Debz, forecast says possible snow in the Midlands on Tuesday.
I've got the fosters seeds too for petes gogc2425. I'm like you, would be over the moon to grow a decent sized onion. Good luck, I've not sown mine yet 😊
@Jacqui-Pen best of luck buddy.
Very well.done😊 900 subscribers Jason, great news 👌🤗
@@gardenaddict Thanks so much. 😁
i can guarantee we will get a freeze soon. i've grown many an onion over the years, sowing on boxing day. the freeze and thawing action has never killed anything off. fingers crossed, this year doesn't prove me wrong. the seedlings only defence from the cold weather has been a propagating tray with it's lid. good luck with the giant onion growing...........................brian

@@CoastalGardensNW I need to start them soon.
I grow lemon grass every year. Outdoors in pots do better for me. I harvest one leaf from each stalk two or three times in the summer when they’re at their most healthy and wind each leaf up into a coil to dry individually and store in glass jar. I use as an addition to tea ☕️ occasionally but mostly pop them in Thai soups. Same lemongrass taste as the stems. Just harvested mine. Washed them and separated the stalks to dry. The leaves are too cold-damaged and dying back to save but if I hadn’t harvested the leaves during the summer, I would have kept a few to dry. I’ve never been successful keeping them over the winter and have had to sow new seed or resprout stems each spring. I had a good harvest this year so have enough thicker stalks back to sprout next spring. If you have space in a warm conservatory you could try overwintering. They’re likely to die back and resprout next year. I believe that in warmer climbs they are cut back ready to resprout the following year. Mine in ground outside and under cover never resprout in the spring. Same with the ginger. Not tried turmeric. Keep forgetting to get some. Not seen you at your hospital. Do you work in the morgue? 😬😂 (hence the name of your channel). 😮
Ah. I see someone else has success with bringing the LG into the house. I only tried once and it failed. Not good with house plants and if any get fungus gnats or root grubs, the whole lot get thrown out the house! 😂
@amandar7719 hi, thanks for the lemon grass advice, appreciated. I think I'll try potting it and see what happens. Re the hospital, I'm in cancer diagnosis. The channel name comes from my love of growing poisonous plants. All the best to you.
@ Hi. Lemon Grass wasn’t really advice, it was just relaying what I do and the experience I’ve had. 🙂 Explains why I’ve not seen you around. You’ll probably only see bits of me post-mortem. My mother, aunt and grandmother were all only diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after death of similar health issues. I’m on the same path now but resigned to the inevitable blind eye by NHS. All gotta go one day! 😎
@amandar7719 I know nothing about it, so definitely advice. Lol. Thanks so much
Made this today then so did my best friend when she tasted mine! Really good and will be a yearly tradition now, thank you 😁
Really glad you enjoyed it. It was a definite game changer for me. Try it on ice cream.
Jason Your squash looks great. That jam looks amazing. Thanks for sharing. Have a blessed day 😊

It looks tasty, Jason. I've grown some habaneros, but im not sure what to do with them? This is my first year growing chillies 😊
Ohh that sounds delicious 😋 sharp cheese and sourdough baguette 🥖 with Jason’s famous pumpkin jam 🧡🧡🧡
@@myrustygarden it's really good.
I don’t grow a lot of what you would call winter squash but this did look good 👍. I agree with Mark pumpkin pie is my go to 😅. Have a fantastic day Jason, Ali ☔️☔️🇨🇦
This is better than pumpkin pie. Cheers Ali.
I am hoping to grow pumpkins this next year for the first time. I love pumpkin, Mrs Bowtie does not... more for ME!! 😂😂😂 This looks like a fun recipe to try between all the pies I am planning to make! Are those skull measuring cups in the background at 10:50? 😂😅😂 Did you water bath can (boiled water can) those jars?
@bowtielife hi, I didn't water bath the jars, I give the jam away and it never lasts long enough to be an issue. They are indeed, skull measuring cups. My daughter loves that type of thing.
@Allotment-of-the-Dead i just missed you on the GrowUp livestream! 👍👍👍 Mrs Bowtie really surprised me... she is itching to try this jam to share with friends this weekend!! She caught the end of the video as I was watching, and she looked up the recipe. 😆🤣😂

Little pretty fliwer!!👍🌷 And beautiful garden!🤗 What is tip to make great?
@cozyrosemary perseverance I guess, also knowing you're not going to get it right every time and to not beat yourself up when things don't go as you expect them. For me, variety is a big thing, helps to keep my interest.
Looks great mate! Andrex in the fridge ready?
@DigwellGreenfingers it's quite a mild one, lemon drop chillies aren't too bad.
@@Allotment-of-the-Dead Nor are paprikas 🤣 I'll give this ago next year. Tried it some time back but the fermenation went sour - might have used the wrong weight of salt.
@DigwellGreenfingers just make a 3% solution of salt, use bottled water and you can't go wrong. 😁
@@Allotment-of-the-Dead Noted. It was some years ago now and I'm sure the advice I followed then was to use a certain weight of salt depending on the weight of the ingredients LOL (not all advice on YT is gospel as we know!_
@DigwellGreenfingers if it's a mash just add 3% of the weight in salt, mix it up. If it's whole chillies, 3% brine solution is great. Need to use rock salt or kosher salt so mo impurities that could affect the lactobacillus.
Great video Jason, I too will be making chilli sauces next year. Urghh snotty slime 😂😂😂 yum 😂
@TheRightPearPlot you get some really flavoursome sauces, snot and all!

Looks like lack of nutrients too. On the upside they aren't suffering from CRF larvae, splitting or forking which is common. Next year plant them where they can get rain, that's one problem solved. You've made the mistake of pulling them all up when you should have left them in and they would have grown a little bit more. Carrots and Parsnips stay in the ground until pulled fresh to eat, now you've got to put them somewhere and eat stored (not fresh) carrots all Winter.
@lksf9820 I'm freezing them so not all lost. Thanks for the comment, appreciated.
@@Allotment-of-the-Dead frozen carrots are foul. You have to question why you grow them in the first place and then keep that goal in mind maybe?
@lksf9820 oh well. We have had some fresh as well this week. I'll do better next time.
@@Allotment-of-the-Dead You can now put them in damp sand to store them, but I don't. Everyone has different reasons for growing F&V, mine is to have top quality, tasty (better than supermarket), fresh food for as much of the year round as possible. This is where growing a lot of Winter hardy veg comes into play for me and it gets left in the ground because being frozen won't harm it (quite the opposite). I'll have fresh swede, carrots, celeriac, parsnips and other items available from Oct until Spring outside. Other more delicate items will also be available, but from under the covers of low tunnels and PT. Your reasons may be different.....
😂😂😂 awesome job love the music 🎶. My garlic again was crap results last season, it went either mushy or didn’t split. Even though we had snow 😮. Put mine this year in pots in the poly 🤞🤞. Have a fab weekend, Ali ☔️☔️☔️🇨🇦
Mine were OK last year, fingers crossed for this one.
Is that sunshine 😂 it’s pouring here all weekend apparently. My tomatoes were so so but my biggest disappointment was my bean harvests 🫘🫘. We love beans and this year there were literally none frozen for winter 😢. My on,y good year with butternut was when I grew inside the poly tunnel. Oh well Jason it’s onwards and upwards for next year 👍👍. Have a great weekend, Ali ☔️☔️☔️🇨🇦
@myrustygarden we has about two hours of sunshine I think, was still cold though. I think I'm with you on Danny's live next week. 😁
Hey chuck all looks ok to me. It’s been a funny old year. Just to say your chard looks like it’s planted too close together which maybe why it’s not doing so good as the one outside. What dyu reckon? I hope to grow the brad variety next yr. it looks a lovely Tom but with varied taste test reviews. I love to see you grow and talk about the chilli varieties and to watch you and your friends eat them. I’m not brave enough to go above a basket of fire which nearly killed me and the hubby. 😂
LOL,. Cheers, I have another load to taste, just harvested a few. Looking for a good Harissa paste recipe at the moment. My chard will take off, the ones in the polytunnel are doing ok now, just as close, they support each other as they grow.

Lemon grass needs to be kept warm through winter (I bring mine in to the house) looks good in a pot, Oleander is in a lot of gardens down here on the Island (I.O.W) and they make it through the winter ok But they are a bit of a worry if the temp go's below -5 c, they just keep flowering right through the summer.
