The Song Yankee Doodle is Much Older Than You Think
🎵We all grew up singing the song Yankee Doodle for fun and giggles.
Yankee Doodle went to town,
A-riding on a pony;
He stuck a feather in his hat,
And call it macaroni.
But did you know Yankee Doodle actually has a fascinating history that traces back to the 15th century? While "Yankee Doodle" is quintessentially American, its legacy has transcended national borders for hundreds upon hundreds of years. In this episode of the Roots Music Histor Podcast Show, we dig up the roots behind this famous diddy. 🎵

    My mom told me of a story when back in 1959; going up to see the trio; Buddy Holly; Richie Valens and the big booper. Late mother told me that it was bad weather that prevented her to ride up to see them. She was an 1hour and half drive. Personally, I think Richie Valens would have change rock and roll. A lot has died in that crash. The beetles came to america shortly after the crash.

    A Renaissance soul, so often misunderstood and whose broad talents cannot be boxed in. Jeff and Tim both echo one another in such a haunting, exquisite, painful way, with voices so amazing in range and depth, their extraordinary physical similarity, and tragic endings. Precious, brief lights, shining on us forever.

    The fact that Henley had not 1, but 2 underage girls in his home doing cocaine is a huge problem for me..on top of his other ahold personality traits..I never liked him from day 1 he dropped the first album in the early 70s..or Glen Frey. The only 2 members I like was randy miesner and Bernie leadon ,and later, Don felder..I was the happiest man in the world when I heard Glen fret took a dirt nap. Still waiting on Henley final nap.

    At 15:32 it is incorrect to say that we "never saw" elements of folk integrated into rock and roll in the early 1960s. It is accurate to say we did not hear psychedelic rock until the mid 1960s, but indeed, it is probably more correct to say that blending folk and rock & roll was just as equally popular in the early '60s as it was later. Even as early as 1956 The Four Preps combined rock and folk on their hit Big Man. Of course The Tokens had a colossal #1 hit combining doo-wop rock and folk with The Lion Sleeps Tonight in 1961. In 1962, rocker and teen idol Brian Hyland had a massive hit with the folk-sounding ballads Ginny Come Lately which reached #21, and Sealed With a Kiss which got up to #3, and Brian Hyland soon followed that up with two folk-rock albums, Country Meets Folk in 1963 and Rockin' Folk in 1964. Also in 1963 rock and roll legend Chubby Checker of "The Twist" fame did an entire folk-rock album which produced three charted singles, Loddy-Lo reached #12, Hooka-Tooka reached #17, and Hey, Bobba Needle which reached #23. Phil Spector himself would produce a song for The Modern Folk Quartet, also known as MFQ, called This Could be The Night, which became the theme song of the movie "The Big TNT Show" which is a film that also included Donovan, as well as a segment of Phil Spector himself playing piano while folk-music giant Joan Baez sang her version of his Righteous Brothers hit, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling. Phil also recorded the folk standard This Land Is Your Land (and you just can't get more "folky" than that) with Darlene Love on lead vocal, for the Bob B. Sox & The Blue Jeans album in 1963. Phil even came very close to signing the folk-rock band the Lovin' Spoonful as well. Folk was not an unknown or perplexing style of music for Phil. I can agree he did seem rather more uncomfortable with psychedelic music... at first...but, by the time he produced Wah- Wah for George Harrison in 1970 for his All Things Must Pass album, he certainly got well into the swing of it. A lot of people think Wah-Wah is the most exciting song on that album, although there's no denying the jazzier My Sweet Lord was the monumental hit from that boxed set LP.

    I work on guitars and the signature is on top of what is left of a good bit of smooth-ish lacquer. You can see almost all of the lacquer is still there in the later pics where it was signed but ink is easily rubbed off by then. Sweat and it was constantly being buffed against his clothes, banged on the floor, etc. Then finally the guitar on the stand has almost zero lacquer left in that area. You'd have to have it on a bench to see the black in any small dings to know for sure. I believe this is his number one and He just played the hell out of it and didn't mind the signature getting beat and smeared off of it. If he cared that much he might of retired that guitar. Love your videos Thanks.

    I too am a diehard Don McLean fan and have read deeply and widely about Don. I found your talk extremely accurate based on the information out there. What is interesting about Don is very few artists have all wrapped in one : supreme poetry , unbelievable musical memory (ask him to play any song of his halcyon era, even of other artists and without hesitation he does it) , superb guitar work and a voice to die for. Of these his poetry and choice of the exact right word for the song simply floor me…think Vincent. Thanks for a superb roots story. One day do a sequel based on his “other songs” which speak more about Don collectively than just American Pie.
