Why there are two ESS Audio chip on the card? Does it mean it can do backward compatibility?
@@hyliu4211 Hello there ! What exactly do you mean ? Backward compatibility with older models ? I only know that the newer models (1868 etc) have only one chip that is integrated and does the same job.
back in my days ... great Hardware long lasting and reliable
You have almost the same components like me but i opted for the fastest dual core E7500 and win XP32
I do seem to have the standard 6163 w/o extra features. Great board, I have recapped mine and it currently runs a 550MHz Katmai unti I can buy another slotket... the one I have resides in my ABIT BE6-II gaming build (Geforce 4 Ti4200, P3 1000EB, 768MB RAM, 120GB HDD, Aureal Vortex 2, RTL8169SC NIC as well as USB card, 98SE w/NUSB and a lot of Rloew's patches). My 2nd build is based on the very rare MS-6168 w/ V3 2000. It's more rare than standard boards as it came factory with 16MB SGRAM, not 8. I run a 650MHz P3 on it, 2x128MB SDR and a 13.7GB IBM Deskstar on it, also w/98SE. A few other builds I plan to do will feature the following boards: - ABIT KR7A - ABIT BX6 R2.0 - MSI MS-6195 (K7 Pro IR3) - DFI CS32-TC - DFI CS65-TC (both are Tualatin capable)
Cool !!!!😃🤝
Amazing build, good selection of parts 👍

MGA-MYST has no BILINEAR Filter! Motoracer is D3D on Voodoo though. Texture-Glitches of JediKnight on MGA are due to wrong settings...read the info for setting the correct min-texture-size.
Amazing. How do you record the video output?
Hello there ! No big deal, just a VGA and jack to HDMI adapter and a super cheap HDMI video capture usb device.
Being a Yamaha XG sound card, I understand that General MIDI of these cards only sounds in Windows but the driver also initializes the MPU-401 port in pure MS-DOS. Does General MIDI sound in pure MS-DOS outside of Windows, or does General MIDI only work in Windows? Thanks.
Some time ago I searched about GM Midi support in pure DOS and unfortunately I found that it can't be done.
It was what I feared, these types of sound cards want the General MIDI to be heard through Windows and not by pure MS-DOS, however it is heard so enormously well in MS-DOS games that there should be there has been some implementation for pure MS-DOS, and I hope it is not because both Soundblaster and MPU-401 are sharing the same IRQ in the setupds, they must be different IRQs, the same thing for autoexec.bat. But I've been thinking for several days and perhaps it could be possible to have Yamaha XG General MIDI in pure MS-DOS, through a Soundblaster AWE32 or other compatible with General MIDI in pure MS-DOS and that has a wavetable header, and add a DB50XG in it, as the Soundblaster AWE32 can achieve sound with General MIDI in pure MS-DOS thanks to the aweutil command, a wavetable does not need any driver but the wavetable is connected as if it were a serial port on the card and through the MS-DOS driver of the AWE32 and the MIDI port and Wavetable port of the AWE32 it would be possible to make a DB50XG sound by itself, the AWE32 driver is what would be responsible for making a DB50XG sound since the wavetables do not need drivers as well the external MIDI modules through the game port that do not need drivers either and an AWE32 is compatible and sounds with General MIDI in pure MS-DOS, and this would perhaps be the solution, or get a Yamaha MU-90 module through the game port, that would achieve having Yamaha XG in pure MS-DOS.
ATi "Rage IIC" i believe is the last card that supports the "Ati CIF" API .. One with proper memory speeds, might provide a few more drops of performance. Compared to ATi, 3dfx seems to have kind of cheated with their agresive MipMapping, in order to boast the FPS (most visually obvious in corridors and on long stone paths). Could be because of difference in resolution in this case; but I doubt it.
Thank god that TR1 have OpenLara and TR1X open source engine :P Or TRLE which is TR4 engine that uses DirectX
Talked through Dege to get it working on dgVoodoo2. Now for DDrawCompat -
This is now fixed thanks to the DGvoodoo dev.
the first time I finished it with Mystique 220 4 MB, the second with 3dfx. Beyond glides I think Matrox is fantastic with this title. ATI isn't bad either. S3 still has its charm but obviously takes a lot of effort. I also have the Rendition and PowerVR PCX2 and they are amazing. Congrats for the video. Well done👍
S3 was obviously the superior choice
It's a brilliant gaming hardware and there's plenty of games to keep you busy today with it. However I suggest you run Win 98 as you can play many more games that modern pcs cannot play without emu or a remaster
How do I get this to work on Windows 10?
Check dgVoodoo and nGlide for emulation.

If your HD 3850 AGP is from Powercolor, try setting the agp to 4x in your motherboard's bios.
34 FPS in DOOM and not even in full screen? Very poor for a 486 DX4 100.
Thank you for your comment ! In the description of this video I give you a link with benchmarks. A system with the same processor and a PCI graphics card scores 38.8 fps, so I consider my score somehow normal. I think that Pentium processors (and above) have great performance in Doom .
I get around 40 FPS with my DX4 100 WB with the same chipset and similar VLB card in fullscreen. Probably just unoptimized memory timings.
"The AMD DX4s usually have 8kB cache, where the last part of the product code is 'SV8T' meaning 8 kB Write-Through. But for example you can find 'SV16B' too, meaning 16 kB Write-Back" (vogons). My CPU doesn't support write back. Additionally I am going to try different memory timings. Thank you for your comment 😊
Try to run windows 11 on it
It is difficult to collect these parts in 2023 without spending a fortune. You can be very proud for doing this. Thanks for sharing Spyros! I think new AT power supplies are still produced in small numbers. Maybe you will find one someday.
The parts cost me 80 euros and the AT case only 20 euros. I was very lucky especially with the case. Out of the corner of my eye I caught the AT case on a truck. There are people who collect metallic objects and then they sell them by weight. I definitely need to buy a new PSU for this system. Thank you for your comment ! You came first once again!
Hi from a 4coredual owner :) keep doing this type of content!!, btw do you know if there's a possibility that sapphire HD 3850 agp can be updgraded to 1gb vram? I'm asking because the sapphire pcie one, despite the connector, is the same pcb, same brand of memory (qimonda in general), same power phases for vcore and vmem, same socket type for vram (BGA 136) and adequate operating voltage for them between 1.8-1.9v. AGP 512 mb have 64mb x8 modules, and 1gb 128mbx8 modules, model HYB18H1G321AF and this memory chip is present on many HD 3850 manufacturers, like club 3d, powercolor, asus and even on the most recent HD 4850 1gb pcie, would be fantastic achieve 1gb on 3850 agp with mem clocks above 1000mhz (the qimonda chip is capable of). Nowadays is very common to see vram upgrades like the rx570 4gb >8gb rx480, rtx 2060 even rtx 3070, the question is HD 3850 AGP why not?
Thank you for comment ! I am not informed about the upgrade. I am going to check it, it's quite interesting!

Hi Manuel ! I don't have this kind of knowledge but sounds like a good idea !
I had a ATI AGP X1950GT 512GDDR3 and was thinking of getting the HD3850 but with AGP platform dying I sold my PC and jumped over to PCI and a 8800GT, man those were the days.
I literally almost had this exact build when I was 11.
I had this GPU with a 775i65G R3.0 and a Pentium Dual-Core E5800 running XP Pro SP3. Oddly enough, it was a bit sluggish when I played NFS: Most Wanted. Moreso than with the Geforce 6800. That build didn't last long though, since I ended up using the CPU and board for an overkill Win9x system with a Gefοrce 4 Ti 4600
A3D much better than EAX, good choice on the Vortex 2 !
mmm, i just tossed my p3 933ES into a dfi pa61, along with a gf4 mx440 (with a v3 2000 as a swap in for when i need glide), 368mb of ram (no idea where my 256 sticks ran off to), an 80gb drive, and an awe32. oh, and usb and network cards, but they're not particularly special. tossed a 600eb in a slightly older machine to use as a dosbox, and will build a 486 rig for even older dos gaming when i can find my old socket 3 board. the 933 is doing juuuust fine, i need to stick a few things back into the 600eb, and no luck yet on the s3 board. though i wish i could find my awe64 for the 933 rig. oh well, it'll happen when it happens.
You are very lucky to have an awe32 ! We share the same passion on building a 486 ! It's cool to collect an awe64 but in my opinion it's not the best sound card for dos games or win98 games.
@@spyros86 yeah, its not great for the dos side, but its awesome for win9x/etc. well, unless you're doing a lot of midi output to one of the roland devices, then its iffy. but i've got an audiodrive, one of the yamaha cards, and a monster sound 3d mx200 should i ever get my hands on a soundcanvas or mt32 as well as a plethora of vibra and sb16 variants to choose from, and a single sb2.0. but the awe32 does what i need for the majority of stuff that will be played on this box. cheers
I had that case! And a ti 4200.

bah. Using a P200MMX as base machine. i'm seeing this too frequently in this retro reviews. This was not the typical machine that PC gamers had in 1997. Most of them were stuck using 486s and P60,75,90,100,120. Without a 3D card, 3D games were run at 320x200 with low frame rate on these machines. This created a muh greater thirst for a 3D card than some lucky gamer with a P200MMX where frame rate wasn't a problem on tomb raider and quake.
Most gamers? Well I don't know, but in 1997 at least most of my friends had high end Pentiums and I remember only one unlucky friend who had a DX4-133. That brings up some memories... :) In early 1997 my dad bought us a P166 MMX (i430HX) with 32MB RAM, S3 Virge and a 2.5GB HDD. I still remember when my friends came to check it out they were not that much impressed because it was below the magical 200MHz mark and didn’t have a ‘proper’ 3D card. But it was a nice machine nevertheless. A couple years later my dad bought a new PC and I got to keep the old one just to myself so then I finally overclocked it to 200MHz, added a Voodoo2, a second HDD and upgraded the RAM to 64MB. And wow, that was quite the transformation! We could even play Counter Strike on it back then which is kinda impressive :)
Great build! I remember the first time I saw those reflections in re-volt and was blown away 😅
Thanks a lot ! What an amazing time we were living in !
I had that same case back when I had my Pentium 2, those old antec cases were stout
must add too, my case only had the one hard drive tray in the front and had two 80mm's in front, must have been a few options for that case
I spend 10 years of my life with WindowsXP, this video with high end geforce4 give me some flashback
