Dans le Top 10 de mes films de chevet ! VALMONT de Milos Forman, l'illustre cinéaste de ''Vol au-dessus d'un nid de coucous'', ''Amadeus" et ''Hair''... Personnellement, je suis depuis le premier jour, un inconditionnel de cette fresque somptueuse, filmée avec virtuosité et panache. Sortie en novembre 1989, huit mois seulement après ''Les Liaisons dangereuses'' de Stephen Frears, cette libre adaptation du chef-d’œuvre de Choderlos de Laclos fut assez mésestimée, presque moquée face au souvenir encore tout frais de son concurrent, loué pour son cynisme et sa cruauté (sic !). Et ''Valmont'' - produit par Claude Berri et coscénarisé par Jean-Claude Carrière connut hélas, un échec commercial retentissant... Fort heureusement, l'histoire rend parfois justice ; même au cinéma... Quelques décennies plus tard, ''Valmont'' est désormais célébré par la critique - et par "Cannes Classics" en 2016 - comme un grand film passionnant et épique, d'une intelligence, d'une acuité et d’une finesse admirables, tant dans son approche des sentiments contradictoires qui consument et dévorent vos plus intimes convictions (à côté le film de Frears rappelle désormais une ''battle'' certes impressionnante mais sans nuance) que dans sa beauté formelle, presque insolente... Arnaud Desplechin est aussi l'un des cinéastes à avoir très favorablement reconsidéré son jugement sur le film de Forman. ''Valmont", qui évoque parfois une ambiance ''Libertine'' revisitée par le Kubrick de ''Barry Lyndon'', est un enchantement absolu, un "Paris est une fête" de tous les instants. Des acteurs sublimes débordant de malice (Colin Firth et Annette Bening en tête et peu connus à l'époque), une mise en scène d'une élégance chorégraphique, un solide scénario truffé de rebondissements, d'humour, de cocasserie et de lyrisme échevelé. Et en prime, une jeune comédienne épatante : Fairuza Balk (la jeune Cécile) - qui nous offre les scènes les plus espiègles, pétillantes et drôles du film. Et quelle succession de superbes séquences aux dialogues incroyablement ciselés ! Magnifique épopée vénéneuse et romanesque sur les blessures de l’âme et les fêlures du cœur, l'éducation sentimentale et sexuelle, le pouvoir de séduction, de domination et de manipulation perverse, ‘’Valmont’’ est tout simplement inoubliable. C'est bien simple, chaque fois que je revois cette merveille, me revient cette citation de Dostoïevski : ''La beauté sauvera le monde''. Merci à vous Maestro Forman !LG ✨️
