Geoff Bodenham - A Class of His Own (Entire Cassette)
'A Class of His Own' was the second and final commercially released solo album by Geoff Bodenham. This album was recorded in 1984, which is after the Crown Folk split up and around the time Geoff and Derek Craft were performing together as '1812', Geoff was starting to work more alongside Harvey Andrews at this time which is why some of his songs appear here.
Geoff had been working for a number of years as a teacher at several schools including Russell's Hall Primary School and had collected a number of anecdotes that inspired the theme and title of the album. This album, released on audio cassette, would likely have only been distributed privately at various folk shows Geoff attended.

Albert Shaw (Field Recordings)

Albert Shaw was one of the recorded Traditional Black Country Folk Singers. There is some disagreement about if he came from Cradley Heath or Coseley though it is believed his mother was a chainmaker. Many of the songs performed by Albert were Irish in origin, possibly learned from his mother or from radio broadcasts. 'The Benefit Concert' is the one song for which he is the oldest known record...

BOSTIN !!
Sweet memories of The Crown Folk Club too. Miss you Geoff.
What a wonderful night that was .
Wonderful and true Staffordshire & Worcestershire Black Country folk, blows the "West Midlands" non - county into the bin
Hi, I'm the girl on the left I was Nicki Carter at the time I'm now Nicki Harrow. We had such a wonderful time with The Staffordshire men. This brought back some happy memories when I saw this today. Thank you for posting it
The woman on the left is my mother😮😮
No way she is also mine
This is crazy and mine 😮
Heard this fpr the first time today and fell in love with it straight away , been painting the house with the rest of their songs on in the background, absolute class 💪
I've come here after seeing the BBC Archive video (aired today) on Dolly. I did have to listen in carefully, to be honest, but she was a funny lady. Never heard of her before today.
Love Dolly Allen,my aunty used to have an LP with her on,so funny, R.I.P funny lady xx
google and youtube listen to what you say,i was talking to a friend about this and up it comes on here never searched for this ever
Would love to have this on vinyl 😍
Would love to have this on vinyl, I have Jons Ballad of the Black Country.
Took me ages to find this but it was worth it! An exact copy of the LP I had many years ago. Wonderful to hear it again.
Brilliant. ❤
I saw Dolly many years agoo at a Werking Mon's Club. The Committee were a roight grumpy bunch of buggers, but Dolly had em crying o'loffing in no toime. Bless her!
Worth watching for the Dolly Allen segment alone. This is probably the best visual record of her act in existence. I have an audio cassette of Dolly Allen which I bought at the Black Country Museum many years ago which includes this performance. But I had never seen the video version before. A great bit of Black Country history.
I actually need to amend that, I have recently determined that Brian Clift is still currently around though his performing days seem well and truly behind him, in his later years however he seems to have become quite a skilled photographer. He hasn't raised any objections so far to this video that I am aware of. All of them are greatly missed, and the number of people who find their way to these videos is an amazing testament to their impact.
This footage is to be treasured. ❤ 👍🏻🙂
I can barely understand a word she's saying. Most of her punchlines are incomprehensible to anyone outside of the Black Country.
I met Dolly a couple of times in the bank where I worked during the 1980's. . She was very quiet and reserved - a complete contrast to her stage personna. Happy memories
Great story my friend. Where was the bank located

Old Style!
My grandfather showed me this, I am apparently distantly related. The Dunn family are still well and truly midland based
It might seem an odd claim to fame, but George Dunn was perhaps the most important traditional Folk singer to be recorded in the West Midlands region, certainly Staffordshire and the Black Country. Also, a little known fact is that despite the song 'Cold Blows the wind' being very well documented; Mr Dunn was the only traditional singer ever recorded actually performing it. I know a lot of Mr Dunn's life was recorded by Roy Palmer (I have those books) but if your Grandfather felt there was anything he could add I'd be very happy to speak with him as I have a long running project to collect and disseminate information about the Folk singers of the region.
I've had funnier toothaches. I'm off to watch the paint dry.
I think both of these statements say more about you than the video.
So sad.
She’s bloody grate A she ❤ Dolly Alan 👍
Lovely. Many songs I know from the past. My sister sang Cushy Butterfield. That song Almaz is so beautiful. Some of those I remember from the Liverpool group The Spinners. Some I've never heard before. So glad I found this. Thanks Keith. :)
Oh fond memories of past times .
Thanks so much for posting! I loved this album when I first bought it in the early 80's. My vinyl is long gone and I've been trying to find it digitally for decades now. I haven't heard it in 30 years and every note sounds still sounds familiar after all these years! Whatever happened to Jon Raven?
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Jon Raven continued for many years, first with the Black Country Night Out Show and with his books on Folklore and Folk Song. In the 90's he branched out slightly into video with a Documentary called 'Songs of the Black Country' which is now digitised here on RUclips. His final release would be the CD 'Fragile Life' in 1995 which was a sequel to 'Harvest', featuring many more original songs mostly reflecting on the autumn years of his life, it featured his son Daniel alongside him. I have also uploaded this CD here. The following year he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and retired from performing. He eventually passed away in Wolverhampton in 2015. He is survived still by his son Daniel Raven and his two Grandchildren.
@@StaffordshireFolksongArchive Sorry to hear of his passing - I look forward to checking out the documentary and his CD - thanks so much for this!!

Back to 1960s. 🤦🏻♂️
These are some incredible recordings you're posting :)
I'm really pleased you're enjoying them, especially these traditional singers. Some people find them too rough around the edges but I just see them A* grade authentic.
@@StaffordshireFolksongArchive Me too. I got the ear for the source singers quite early. The more you listen, the more you hear.
Amazing
Great
Oh what fond memories of my youth. My parents and I were present during the live recording and were mentioned on the back cover the 'Tedstill's' Loved this man, many happy Friday and Saturday nights at the Lion 'o Morf 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Great old mates
Fond memories of Yesteryear.
Thanks so much for uploading this !
Thank you.
This is great thanks
RIP Paul Turner , my musical mate in almost half a dozen bands
Is it concerning that in the description of the final song they use 'Aryan' for (presumably) the Anglo-Saxons?
Not at all, it's a now dated term for 'Indo-European'. This album was produced in the 1960's when that was the commonly accepted meaning of the word. From the 70's onwards media began to change perception of these words for those of us living in the West into one with a bad smell about it. For context, the name of the middle eastern country 'Iran' derives directly from Middle Persian Ērān, first attested in a third-century inscription at Naqsh-e Rostam, with the accompanying Parthian inscription using the term Aryān, meaning for them; "of the Iranians".
@@StaffordshireFolksongArchivethanks for this reply! I’ve learnt something today!
Ahhh Uncle Dougie Love you xx
He' s a very funny man, my little bro! 💓
He was also on a BBC album called Dungeon Folk with his group The Crown Folk [ Derek Craft and Greg Jones ] performing Long About Now / The Dancing Bear [ a Mommas and Poppas song ] /and Maybe One Day She`ll Come Along . Its a compilation album with the likes of Cliff Aungier Sheelagh McDonald and other artistes who appeared in a BBC radio series . I knew Geoff from the Crown Folk Club in Codsall in the sixties a great performer
Great to hear Geoff performing some of the songs heard so often at the Lion o' Morfe. When you say his only solo album, do you mean the only one on vinyl? I'm sure that in the late '80s or early '90s he brought out an album on cassette that included his own excellent song Badger's Lea and possibly Seven Daffodils. I actually own it but I think it has been hidden up my loft along with quite a few LPs.
I was certainly under the impression it was his only solo album, there being a recording of 'The Truth about 1812' with Derek Craft as well. Discogs doesn't list any other solo works of his so if there is a cassette as you suggest it must be very rare indeed! I'd love to ask if you'd be happy to make loan of the cassette for a day or two, I have the ability to transfer and preserve cassettes as well and would love to make sure there was a digitised version of those recordings of Geoff!
@@StaffordshireFolksongArchive I'll see what I can unearth up the roof. I seem to recall playing the cassette in my old Vauxhall Cavalier. I would certainly have bought it directly from Geoff; indeed, I have a vague memory of picking it up from him over the bar of the Bell and Talbot in Bridgnorth shortly after he had taken over the pub. And the cassette.
Hills of Connemara is a great tune, never heard an English group cover it before.
The way the Staffordshire Men tell it, their passion was for any song that would show the best of Folk Music and give the audience a fantastic night out. So the songs they covered seem to have come from a really wide range of sources.
Thanks
Love to have this on LP but it's a bit pricey.. thanks for uploading.. your coming up with some real gems
